Time Out3 days ago
The Windy City's biggest and arguably most fun summer music festival is nearly here, which means that street closures are already underway. Whether you're partaking in the fun at Lollapalooza's four-day festival, or you're just trying to get to work in the most efficient and quick way possible, here's what you need to know for the coming weeks.
From Thursday, July 31 to Sunday, August 3, Grant Park will be the hub for all-things music…and crowds. Headliners, drawing loads of concertgoers, include Tyler, the Creator, Rüfüs Du Sol, Luke Combs, and Olivia Rodrigo. (And, yes, we're excited!) Of course, what this also means is that many downtown streets will close well ahead of the festival, making it difficult to get around if you don't plan ahead.
The first thing you should know is that some streets have already began their closures to vehicular and pedestrian traffic—Balbo Drive from Columbus to DuSable Lake Shore Drive closed on July 16.
More street closures are planned for the following dates and locales:

July 28—August 4: Columbus (Northbound), from 13 th Street to Roosevelt
July 28—August 4: Congress Plaza Dr, from Michigan to Columbus
July 30—August 4: Monroe, from Michigan to Dusable Lake Shore Drive
Street closures are expected as well, including the following:
July 29—August 3: Michigan, from Jackson to 11 th St. Bridge
July 16—August 10: Balbo (both sides), from Columbus to DuSable Lake Shore Drive
July 16—August 8: Columbus (Northbound side), from Roosevelt to Ida B Wells

July 28—August 4: Balbo (both sides), from Michigan to Columbus
July 28—August 4: Jackson (both sides), from Michigan to Columbus
July 28—August: Congress Plaza Dr, from Michigan to Columbus
July 26—July 27: Congress Plaza Dr. (Westbound & Eastbound side), from Michigan to Columbus
July 28—August 5: Columbus (both sides), from Monroe to Roosevelt
Additional closures to know about:

From rave culture and dementia to technology and Shakespearean tragedy, the human body expresses an awe-inspiring range of storytelling at this year's Fringe. I created my own luxury wallpaper in one afternoon for just £3, you need virtually no equipment & it works in any room

FORGET having to splash out on expensive wallpaper to transform your home, one woman shared how she gave a room in her house a makeover for just £3. Baylee shared how she bought a floral rubber art stamp from a crafts shop and then added paint to make the pretty print. 4 Although the US-based homeowner got her wooden stamp from Hobby Lobby, you can pick up similar style ones from The Range. On her @bayleewhiteasheck account, she showed how she used a piece of cardboard to ensure the prints were spaced apart evenly. Two hours of stamping later, and her laundry room had gone from plain white to being covered in the gorgeous floral print. Baylee said: 'You know what? It worked out for me.' And she wasn't done yet. She added that she then added a hanging basket to the wall, along with some artwork a friend had made her. Showing off the finished result, she added: 'And that's my perfect, precious, gorgeous, beautiful cottage laundry room makeover for three dollars and fifty cents. 'Feeling absolutely unstoppable after finishing this project in two hours after putting my baby down. 'Maybe I'll like doing laundry now.' Many people will be hugely impressed with the DIY tip, which has racked up over 50,000 likes. I live in a council house with no storage & made a dream dressing table for £21… it's great for those with limited space One person commented: 'A tutorial I could actually follow and afford?!' Another added: 'I fear I must go do this now.' And a third wrote: 'I'm flabbergasted by how smart and easy this is.' DIY FAIL 4 4 However, DIY doesn't always go according to plan, as one woman showed. TikTok user @lifeatthelma showed how she had picked out a gorgeous sage green paint and had then taped a decorative stencil to the wall. She thought everything had gone swimmingly, until she peeled back the stencil to reveal her hard work. To her horror, the paint had spread until the stencil and it looked messy and not like the design she had wanted. After she pulled off a larger section, she joked: 'But do we think it is giving cottage core (the goal) or chain link fence?'

Royal Mint Releases Commemorative Coin to Celebrate 200 Years of British Railways

The Royal Mint has released a new commemorative coin celebrating the 200th anniversary of Britain's modern railway, with train enthusiast and social media personality Francis Bourgeois striking the first coin. Francis, whose genuine passion for trains has captivated millions across social media, was a natural choice for the striking, The Royal Mint said. The collectible £2 coin features the iconic Locomotion No. 1 which first steamed along the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825. Previously included in The Royal Mint's 2025 annual coin sets, this special edition has now been released as a standalone collectible. The detailed design depicts Locomotion No. 1 on the historic opening day of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, capturing a moment that transformed British transportation. Each coin features the edge inscription 'ACTIVE · LOCOMOTION NO 1' as a tribute to the revolutionary locomotive, offering collectors a tangible piece of British industrial heritage. Francis shared the striking ceremony with his millions of followers on TikTok, introducing many young enthusiasts to the hobby of coin collecting while celebrating his own passion for railways. Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint, said: 'Coin collecting, much like Francis's dedication to trains, brings together people who share a passion for history and heritage. Both hobbies offer a fascinating window into our nation's past and provide communities where enthusiasts can share knowledge and excitement. We've seen tremendous interest from collectors of all ages who appreciate how coins can commemorate significant moments like the birth of modern railways, making this standalone release a celebration not just of railway history, but of the joy of collecting itself.' Emma Roberts, programme manager for Railway 200, said: 'Having a commemorative coin from The Royal Mint is a huge honour. We're delighted that the vital role of the railway on our lives is being recognised in this way. The opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway two centuries ago accelerated a rail revolution around the world. That historic moment helped to shape the past, present and future of rail and deserves to be commemorated in this bicentenary year.' The commemorative coin is available in a range of finishes including gold and silver editions, alongside a standard brilliant uncirculated version, with prices starting from £17.50. There are no plans for the coin to enter general circulation.
