Your Kitchen Is the Hottest Room in the House. Here's How to Keep It Cool During a Heat Wave
But you've still got to eat -- and cook -- which means hot kitchens that can cause a domino effect, raising the temperature in the entire home.
Read more: Best Foods for Staying Hydrated During Hot Weather
Using appliances that don't produce as much heat and planning your meals so that cooking doesn't coincide with the hottest part of the day are just a few ways to save your air conditioning bill from spiking and your family from an uncomfortable climate.
Here are 9 ways to keep your kitchen cool during a heat wave this summer.
1. Prepare food instead of cooking
Ceviche requires no cooking. It just might be the perfect summer food.
CNET
Don't want to heat up your kitchen? Don't cook. That doesn't mean you can't eat. Focus on no-cook, fresh foods, such as summer salads, ceviche, smoothies and cold noodles. Even slicing up fresh fruit or vegetables like cucumbers and melons can be a refreshing and healthy summer treat. No-cook foods help beat the heat in two ways: By not heating up your kitchen -- or your body -- as you consume them.
When you do cook, limit your time in the kitchen with a helpful meal kit (these are the best meal kits for 2025). You'll likely still have to cook the food, you'll do far less prep and spending less time in a sweltering kitchen is definitely a good thing. Most services offer lighter, no-cook meals during the summer, too.

2. Use your exhaust fan
An exhaust fan above the stovetop is never more useful than during hot summer days.
KitchenAid
If you're going to use your oven, make sure the exhaust fan is on full tilt whenever you do. Most people associate exhaust systems with limiting smoke, but these above-oven fans suck up a ton of heat too.
3. Cook outside with a grill or pizza oven
Home pizza ovens are on a tear and present an excellent alternative to hot indoor cooking.
CNET
Take the heat out of the kitchen by cooking outdoors this summer. BBQ grilled chicken or steaks are classics for the grill but don't forget you can grill summer favorites like corn on the cob or watermelon too. You might be hot while you're outside using a grill or smoker to heat foods, but your kitchen can stay cool.

4. Use an air fryer or Instant Pot
Slow cookers give off far less heat than an oven.
CNET
Minimizing use of the oven and stove can help you avoid heating up your kitchen. Small appliances can cook your food just as well while emitting less heat than large appliances. Try using an air fryer instead of your wall oven, or a panini press instead of the stovetop. You'd be surprised how versatile small appliances can be. Your slow cooker and Instant Pot aren't just for winter soups and stews, either. Think of summer recipes you can achieve on your countertop, like Instant Pot pork carnitas. Don't turn your nose up at your microwave, which can zap rice, quinoa, vegetables and more while generating practically no heat.

5. Meal prep ahead of hot days
Some Instant Pots double as air fryers.
Instant Pot
If you're going to heat up your kitchen, make it worth it. If you do end up using your oven or stovetop, make larger quantities than normal. That way, you can use precooked leftovers, which means you have food ready to go without heating up your kitchen again.
With the right kitchen appliances, you can batch cook and keep the oven off. For example, make a whole bunch of pulled chicken in your Instant Pot (which gives off very little heat). Then you can use the leftovers to make tacos, chicken salad nachos and other meals that don't require firing up your oven.

6. Cook during cooler hours
If you're going to cook, try to do it when it's cooler out.
CNET
Cooking in your kitchen when it's already hot outside (and maybe already hot in your home) means you'll only add to the heat. Plan ahead and strategize your cooking times for when it's not as hot. The best time to cook to avoid the heat is in the morning or later in the evening. That might appear easier said than done, but you could bake bread in the morning, or cook proteins and pasta dishes while you're making breakfast or an early lunch so they'll be ready to go for dinner.

7. Add some fans to the mix
We're big fans of air circulation during the summer.
Amazon
Airflow can help cool down your kitchen. If you're using your stove, turn on the range hood vent. It's there to remove not just grease, fumes and odors but smoke, heat and steam that could get trapped and heat up your kitchen while you're cooking. Plus, you can keep a fan on in the kitchen to move air around and cool it down. You can also position your fan to move hot air out, or bring cold air in with a cool, wet towel.

8. Limit bright lights
Let there be (less) light.

Sunlight and even artificial interior light can generate heat, and when you're in the heat of summer, every degree counts. Dim the lights, shut any curtains, close your blinds and limit how many lights you turn on. You don't need to work in the dark but be wary of turning on lots of overhead lights.

9. Keep yourself hydrated
Water, water everywhere.
Aarke
This strategy won't lower the actual temperature in your kitchen but it will make the heat more bearable. Hydration is the no. 1 rule for most summer activities, and cooking outdoors or in a warm kitchen is no exception. Drink lots of water -- it's recommended to drink between 11 and 15 cups per day -- and sip even more than you think you should when the mercury rises.
Want to punch it up a bit? Try water infusions for more flavor and refreshment. Planning to sweat? Add sea salt and lemon to boost electrolytes and flavor.

Travis Kelce brought home some merch from his Montana vacation with Taylor Swift
Travis Kelce loves to exit through the gift shop. The Kansas City Chiefs player gave a subtle nod to girlfriend Taylor Swift on the latest episode of his 'New Heights' podcast, wearing a shirt that he seemingly picked up on the couple's recent vacation. Eagle-eyed fans noticed that the logo on his white tee matched that of Yellowstone Club, a private residential club and ski resort in in Big Sky, Montana, where Swift and Kelce stayed earlier this year. While on their winter vaca, the couple also dined with sportscaster Erin Andrews at the ultra-exclusive Auric Room 1915 restaurant at the nearby Lone Mountain Ranch, where all guests are required to either leave their cellphones in their cabins or check them at the host stand. 'I also like to get merch when I travel he's just like me,' one fan joked on X of Kelce's Yellowstone Club tee. Don't miss Page Six Style's guide to all the best Prime Day deals. The 35-year-old tight end does have a history of supporting local businesses; in 2023, after the Chiefs beat the Las Vegas Raiders in Nevada, he was spotted wearing a T-shirt from a popular local strip club, Crazy Horse 3. The nod to his vacation with Swift come one day after the two-year anniversary of the Kansas City Eras Tour concert where Kelce passed along his phone number to the pop star via friendship bracelet, sparking their romance. Though it's unclear when — or where — the podcast was recorded, popular blind item blog Deuxmoi reported that the couple spent the Fourth of July back at the Yellowstone Club. No photos have emerged of the duo's trip, and the 'Cruel Summer' singer seemingly chose not to host her annual star-studded Fourth of July bash at her Rhode Island home. 'Taylor and Travis are soaking up every minute of this slower season together,' a source told People of Swift and Kelce's recent time off before the NFL season. 'They've been splitting their time between New York, Nashville, and a few quiet getaways, just enjoying each other's company without all the usual chaos,' they added, referring to the pair's pop-ups in the aforementioned cities, plus Ohio and Philadelphia, in recent weeks. 'This kind of downtime is rare for both of them, and it's really allowed their bond to deepen.'

'Real Housewives' Star Reveals Young Son's 'Very Overwhelming' Health Diagnosis
'Real Housewives' Star Reveals Young Son's 'Very Overwhelming' Health Diagnosis originally appeared on Parade. Real Housewives of Orange County star is opening up about the "very overwhelming" diagnosis her young son, Luke, recently received. In a new interview with People, the reality star revealed that the 10-year-old suffers from ARFID, or Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, which is an eating disorder that causes food restriction, but is not 'caused by a negative self-image or a desire to change your body weight," according to the Cleveland Clinic, like Anorexia or Bulemia. Simpson believed that Luke, like many kids, was simply an incredibly picky eater, until he stopped eating altogether. After seeing a therapist, he was diagnosed with the mental health disorder, which sparks "fear and anxiety about food or the consequences of eating." People with ARFID may avoid eating due to the fear of choking or vomiting, or decline food because of "unwanted color, taste, texture or smell." In Luke's case, "he's very overwhelmed by texture, color, smells." Simpson explained, "He will only eat white rice. And he has to inspect each piece of rice before he eats it. So it's beyond picky eating. A lot of control issues. It's very overwhelming.' The diagnosis will be chronicled in season 19 of RHOC, which Simpson admitted she often "didn't even know if [she] could continue to film" due to the stress and uncertainty. 'There were so many times when he would say he was starving… because he was starving. But he would refuse to eat. And as a mom, that was so frustrating," she explained. "I didn't know what to do because on one hand he's crying and telling me he's starving, and on the other hand, he refuses to eat anything that I offer." 'Every day is challenging,' she added. Today, Luke's therapist and nutritionist help him to improve, and he's added french fries, sliced bananas, potato chips, ice cream and plain turkey that 'doesn't have any lines or blemishes in it' to his diet, and they continue to work on ways to decrease his fears and anxieties surrounding food. While Simpson has some concerns that being so open about Luke's diagnosis may lead kids or parents at school to say something, she's more hopeful that her transparency will help others going through the same thing—something and youngest daughter also aims to do, as she has struggled with the same disorder.'Real Housewives' Star Reveals Young Son's 'Very Overwhelming' Health Diagnosis first appeared on Parade on Jul 12, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jul 12, 2025, where it first appeared.

We Asked Cleaning Pros If Sorting Laundry Actually Matters, and We Wish We Knew This Sooner
Sort laundry by color (lights vs. darks) to avoid dye transfer. Separate loads of laundry by fabric, weight, and care labels. Prep clothes by turning them inside out, zipping zippers, and using mesh invest plenty of time and money in the process of selecting your clothes, so it's important to follow proper laundry instructions in order to care for your wardrobe as best as possible, to ensure that it will last as long as it can. If you're wondering how to sort laundry like a pro for the best results, we're here to help. Here, two laundry experts share their top insights regarding the steps to take when sorting laundry, how to best categorize various types of items into more specific piles for washing, and more, to ensure that you make the most of each Joun is the co-founder and chief operating officer of the on-demand laundry and dry cleaning pickup and delivery company, Rinse. Rechelle Balanzat is the founder of the clothing cleaning company, Next: Prime Day Is Almost Over! Here Are 107 of the Best Deals Still Happening Today First and foremost, you will want to sort your laundry by color before running a load. "Separating lights and darks helps prevent dye transfer and keeps your garments looking vibrant," James Joun, the co-founder and chief operating officer of Rinse, says. Rather than referring to whites versus darks, Joun uses the term "lights" to describe the former category of clothing, noting that he feels this is more accurate. "This category includes a range of white, off-white, and pastel shades—all of which are susceptible to dye absorption from darker garments," he says. Want more cleaning and organizing tips? Sign up for our free for the latest hacks, expert advice, and more! Once you have sorted your clothing into lights and darks, it's time to sort your piles further according to fabric type and care instructions, which we will detail further in the next section. Rechelle Balanzat, the founder of clothing cleaning company Juliette, explains how it's important to read and listen to clothing care instructions. "Care tags are your cheat sheet to keeping your clothes looking like new," Balanzat says. While not required, it can be advisable to wash items based on their weight as well, Joun explains, detailing the reasoning behind this in the next section. Delicates: Joun will place items that are labeled for delicate or gentle cycles in one pile; he shares that examples of pieces that may belong in this category include those made of wool, silk, lace, and other woven materials that are especially prone to damage. Athletic Wear: To protect the elasticity of these items, be sure to wash them in cold water and light detergent, Balanzat states. Heavy Items: Clothing such as jeans, sweatshirts, and towels can all be washed together, Joun notes. This is due to the fact that heavier pieces need to be washed for longer periods and may trap lighter items, which can affect cleaning results. Extra Dirty Items: Items that have been heavily worn or stained should be washed all together in hot water, Joun says, citing exercise clothing and kitchen rags as examples. Doing so will prevent cleaner items from absorbing dirt. Towels and Sheets: These can be washed at higher temperatures, which are needed to kill bacteria. Dry Clean Only Items: If an item's tag conveys that it is dry clean only, be sure to follow these instructions and do not place the piece into the washing machine in order to avoid permanent damage, Joun shares. Examples of such items include certain wool and silk pieces as well as structured clothing like blazers and outerwear. Turn items inside out as you go. While sorting your clothing into piles to wash, turn it inside out and zip any zippers, Joun suggests, noting that this will help to minimize wear during the washing process. Place laundry in mesh bags. Mesh laundry bags can come in handy when washing extra-delicate items such as lingerie, Joun states, and you can use the period while you're sorting your clothing to bag items as needed.
