Pune Porsche Case: Teen driver will be tried as a minor, says Juvenile Justice Board

Time of Indiaa day ago
Mumbai: In a setback for the
Pune police
, the
Juvenile Justice Board
(JJB) on Tuesday ruled that the 17-year-old boy, accused of driving a Porsche car in an inebriated state and killing two persons last year, in Pune, will be tried as a minor and not an adult.
The crash case hit national headlines last year when the boy, allegedly in an inebriated state, killed two IT professionals during the crash. The Pune police had sought to try the teenager as an adult, citing the severity of the crime and the alleged attempts to tamper with evidence. The JJB, however, refused the police plea.
On May 19, 2024, two young IT professionals - Anish Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa - who were riding a motorcycle were hit by the Porsche driven by the accused. The accused, however, was granted bail within hours of his arrest, asking the accused to write a 300-word essay on road safety, sparking widespread outrage. The backlash led to the boy being sent to an observation home in Pune three days later.

However, on June 25, 2024, the
Bombay High Court
intervened and ordered the boy's immediate release. The court ruled that the JJB's orders sending him to an observation home were illegal and that the law regarding juveniles must be fully implemented.
Tuesday's decision means that the teenager will face proceedings under the
Juvenile Justice Act
, which governs the treatment and trial of minors in conflict with the law. The ruling has once again sparked controversy, with many questioning the
accountability of juveniles
involved in serious crimes.

Death of Vipanjika & child: Kerala HC seeks Centre's response on plea for repatriation of bodies

Kochi: High court on Wednesday sought instructions from the Union govt on a petition seeking the repatriation of the mortal remains of Vipanjika Maniyan, a native of Keralapuram in Kollam, and her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Vaibhavi, who were found dead in Sharjah, UAE. Justice N Nagaresh was considering the petition by S Sheela, the maternal aunt of Vipanjika. Besides repatriation, Sheela has also sought a directive for a fair and proper investigation into the deaths, alleging that Vipanjika had suffered persistent mental harassment, emotional abuse and threats at the hands of her husband, Nidheesh Mohan, and other in-laws. HC instructed the petitioner to implead Nidheesh Mohan as he is the legal claimant concerning decisions on the repatriation of mortal remains. The petition will be further considered on Thursday. According to the petitioner, she is currently the only close relative available in Kerala, as Vipanjika's mother, Shylaja, has travelled to Sharjah to facilitate the repatriation process, while the deceased's only sibling resides in Canada. Vipanjika and her daughter were reportedly found hanging at their residence in Sharjah on July 8. The petitioner alleged that the unnatural and shocking nature of the incident — particularly the alleged hanging of a one-year-old child — raises serious suspicion, pointing to a possible case of murder or abetment to suicide. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like BITS Excellence, now online BITS Pilani Digital Apply Now Undo Sheela further contended that Vipanjika had repeatedly confided in her mother and close relatives about the severe mental agony and abuse she faced in her marital home. She had allegedly shared photographs showing injuries from physical assault, allegedly inflicted by her husband. Following the incident, Shylaja lodged a complaint with the Kundara police against the in-laws, alleging consistent physical and mental cruelty, particularly over the alleged insufficient gold and dowry. The petitioner also sought a direction to the Indian Embassy in the UAE to ensure that the post-mortem and other medico-legal formalities are conducted in accordance with internationally accepted standards and protocols.

Cybercrime & PMAY payments spark storm in Chhattisgarh Assembly, Minister Vijay Sharma questioned by BJP MLAs, Congress

RAIPUR: The third day of the Monsoon Session of the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly witnessed sharp exchanges and heated debates, particularly over the rising cases of cybercrime in the state. BJP MLA targeted the government, alleging gross negligence and delay in action despite the alarming surge in cyber frauds across the state. Raising the issue during the Question Hour in the House, senior BJP MLA Sunil Soni questioned the government's inaction, stating, 'Cyber frauds are being reported across the state every day. Thousands have fallen victim, and in some tragic cases, people have even committed suicide. Yet, not a single cyber expert has been appointed so far. The situation is dire and demands immediate attention.' The session was marked by sharp criticism of the government's 'inaction and delay' in tackling what legislators called an escalating digital threat. Raising the issue in the House, senior BJP MLA Sunil Soni slammed Home minister for its 'casual approach,' pointing out that despite growing cases of cyber fraud, no dedicated cyber experts had been appointed in the state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Viral wajah Jokowi membengkak dan ruam menghitam saat ultah ke-64, sakit serius atau hanya alergi? The situation is dire and there's no clarity about cyber thanas as promised, nor any awareness where the cases should be registered. Besides, the cops at police stations linger over the complaints having no clue about what sections to be imposed,' he said. Soni further questioned the functioning of cyber police stations. 'While the data shared by home minister Vijay Sharma claims to have cyber units, most people don't even know where they are. NCRB and AI-based reports confirm over 16,000 cybercrime cases have been reported, yet no significant action has been taken,' he said. Responding, Sharma stated that 1,301 cybercrime cases had been registered in the state. He dismissed AI-based data, claiming the government was working with 'verified figures,' and clarified that cyber cells, not stations, had been established in every district. 'The NCRB has not published new data since 2022, so questioning recent figures is baseless,' he added. Sharma added that a 'Cyber Bhawan' was inaugurated by chief minister at the cost of Rs 277 crore and I can take all the members for a round and show that the cases of all districts were being lodged there. BJP MLAs Ajay Chandrakar and Rajesh Munat also raised concerns. Chandrakar demanded clarity on how many cyber commandos had been trained and how many appointments had been made. Sharma reiterated that the recruitment of specialists was 'in process,' but failed to give a timeline. 'The cyber experts are being empanelled under the IT Act while batch of six trained cyber experts including an IPS are already on job as experts. This is a continuous process and appointments will be done.' Munat cited figures indicating Rs 107 crore had been siphoned off through cyber fraud in the state, of which only about Rs 3 crore had been recovered. He demanded the appointment of a senior officer to oversee the situation. Sharma responded that recovery of funds is subject to court procedures and that an IG-level officer has already been appointed for cybercrime. In response to a query on arrests made between January 2024 and June 2025, Sharma said three bank-related fraud cases had led to the imprisonment of seven accused, from Raipur, Durg and Bilaspur. While the cybercrime debate dominated the session, Opposition Congress also raised the issue of completion of work and payments under PM Awas Yojana and MNREGA. Leader of Opposition Dr Charan Das Mahant questioned the state's handling of PM housing benefits, especially in cases where houses were allegedly marked complete despite missing toilets. He asked if the completion is considered and payments were done only upon construction of house, or MNREGA work or building of toilets. Deputy CM Vijay Sharma defended by attributing past delays to the previous government and claimed that under CM Vishnu Deo Sai, all pending payments had been cleared right from year 2011. In further exchanges, Mahant raised concerns about fund delays in MNREGA, citing specific districts like Jashpur and Bijapur. Sharma responded that all labour payments were made by June 30, but agreed to verify any discrepancies if provided with documentation, mainly in interior regions of Bijapur, where bank accounts might not be functional. Mahant reacted stating that he has got complaints about completed houses under PMAY, the payments were which were stalled by claiming they were incomplete and they were trying to 'fool' the govt. Sharma replied that Mahant's comment was very hurtful to him while he's ready with all the documents that shows how Congress delayed the PMAY construction despite approval from the Centre. This was followed by noisy scenes as opposition members objected Sharma's reply. Assembly Speaker Raman Singh then said the word 'bewakoof' was abolished and it should not be used any further in the House.

Haryana teachers demand ‘School safety act' after murder of Hisar educator; schools remain shut in protest

. AMBALA: In the wake of the murder of Hisar-based school teacher Jagbir Pannu by a student, private school educators in Ambala staged a united protest demanding the immediate implementation of a 'School safety act' in Haryana. Over 100 teachers and school administrators submitted two memorandums on behalf of National independent school alliance (NISA) Trust and federation of private schools welfare association (FPSWA), Haryana to Ambala deputy commissioner Ajay Singh Tomar, addressed to the president, Prime Minister, and Haryana chief minister, respectively. The memorandum was received by Ambala city magistrate Abhishek. All private schools in Ambala remained closed today in solidarity, suspending educational activities to highlight the growing threat to teachers' safety in school premises. The protestors voiced deep concern over the increasing incidents of student-led violence in educational institutions. NISA president and FPSWA state president Kulbhushan Sharma said the private schools were kept closed across the entire Haryana state in protest on Wednesday. The memorandum strongly urged the government to enact a School safety act in Haryana without delay. It also demanded that the deceased teacher, Jagbir Pannu, be accorded the status of a martyr, his family granted Rs 1 crore as financial compensation, and a government job be offered to one of his family members. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why Crypto CFDs May Suit Your Portfolio IC Markets Learn More Undo The educators further insisted that such heinous crimes should be fast-tracked in special courts and the culprits be handed the harshest punishment possible. They also called for a legal review of the definition of "minor" in cases of serious crimes, urging that juveniles involved in such brutal acts be tried as adults. A key proposal included in the memorandums is lowering the age of criminal responsibility from 18 to 16 years for such offences. Kulbhushan, who led the protest, said, "The murder of a teacher by a student is not only a tragedy but a warning sign for our society. It should be declared a heinous crime, and we must ensure that minors are not misusing their legal protection to commit such acts fearlessly." He stressed that without ensuring a safe environment for teachers, a robust education system cannot be established. "Teachers are the backbone of society, and their protection must be the government's top priority," Sharma added . The unified voices of more than a hundred educators echoed a strong message to authorities: protect the protectors of knowledge, or risk the collapse of the education system.
