Death of Vipanjika & child: Kerala HC seeks Centre's response on plea for repatriation of bodies
Justice N Nagaresh was considering the petition by S Sheela, the maternal aunt of Vipanjika. Besides repatriation, Sheela has also sought a directive for a fair and proper investigation into the deaths, alleging that Vipanjika had suffered persistent mental harassment, emotional abuse and threats at the hands of her husband, Nidheesh Mohan, and other in-laws. HC instructed the petitioner to implead Nidheesh Mohan as he is the legal claimant concerning decisions on the repatriation of mortal remains.
The petition will be further considered on Thursday.
According to the petitioner, she is currently the only close relative available in Kerala, as Vipanjika's mother, Shylaja, has travelled to Sharjah to facilitate the repatriation process, while the deceased's only sibling resides in Canada. Vipanjika and her daughter were reportedly found hanging at their residence in Sharjah on July 8. The petitioner alleged that the unnatural and shocking nature of the incident — particularly the alleged hanging of a one-year-old child — raises serious suspicion, pointing to a possible case of murder or abetment to suicide.

Sheela further contended that Vipanjika had repeatedly confided in her mother and close relatives about the severe mental agony and abuse she faced in her marital home. She had allegedly shared photographs showing injuries from physical assault, allegedly inflicted by her husband.
Following the incident, Shylaja lodged a complaint with the Kundara police against the in-laws, alleging consistent physical and mental cruelty, particularly over the alleged insufficient gold and dowry. The petitioner also sought a direction to the Indian Embassy in the UAE to ensure that the post-mortem and other medico-legal formalities are conducted in accordance with internationally accepted standards and protocols.

DRI seeks custody of Brazilian couple
Kochi: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) will seek custody of the two Brazilian nationals for interrogation to uncover the source and destination of the contraband worth crores. The case involves a couple from Brazil, intercepted at Kochi airport by DRI officials on July 11. The DRI admitted them to a private hospital in Angamaly with the court's permission after finding evidence that they swallowed cocaine capsules. The contraband was entirely retrieved by Tuesday through medical procedures at the hospital. A total of 163 capsules containing about 1.6kg of cocaine worth Rs 16 crore were seized from the couple. Lucas da Silva and Bruna Gabrielle were arrested by the DRI. Sources said the woman was found to be pregnant in the scan, and it was an extremely risky operation since if any of the cocaine bags ruptured, it could have led to death of mother and child. However, officials said the contraband was safely retrieved and both of them are healthy. Jaipur: Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot Thursday demanded Union home minister Amit Shah to explain the prolonged delay in delivering justice in the infamous Kanhaiya Lal murder case of 2022. During a press conference held here shortly before Shah reached Jaipur to address a cooperatives and employment festival, Gehlot alleged that BJP's manipulation of the incident contributed to Congress's defeat in the 2023 state assembly elections. The case, which shocked the nation, involved the beheading of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor in Udaipur, in June 2022. Despite the local police arresting the two accused within four hours, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the investigation the same night. Gehlot said there has been minimal progress in the case since then. "Even basic procedures like recording statements in court remain incomplete," Gehlot pointed out, comparing this case to others where verdicts were reached within three to six months. He emphasised that such delays have led to public scepticism about the govt's competence. Mumbai: The family and friends of Sajjid Electricwala, who was abducted over a drug-linked financial dispute, allegedly paid the accused Rs 40 lakh, said police. With known criminal antecedents of each of the seven members arrested, the Mumbai Crime Branch is seriously considering invoking the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against the accused, citing a clear pattern of organised extortion and violence. Crime branch arrested seven members of the gang for allegedly kidnapping Sajjid and his friend Shabbir Siddiqui over a financial dispute of Rs 50 lakh, which Sajjid took under the promise of delivering a mephedrone-amnufacturing factory.
