Volkswagen Restores "Magic Bus" That Survived California Wildfire
Volkswagenof America is honoring the third annual International Volkswagen Bus Day by restoring a remarkable survivor of California's 2025 Palisades Fire — a 1977 T2 Bus known as 'Azul.' The white-over-blue van captured national attention after an AP photo showed it seemingly untouched amid the charred remains of a Malibu neighborhood.
Now dubbed the 'magic bus,' Azul belongs to Megan Krystle Weinraub, who was relieved when Volkswagen offered to assess and restore the beloved vehicle. Following clearance to access the area, the bus was transported to VW's Oxnard Engineering Campus, home to the brand's historic fleet, where a thorough inspection revealed the need for extensive repairs despite its photogenic 'good side.'
Restoration efforts are underway, with work expected to be completed later this year. The project reflects Volkswagen's ongoing support for California communities impacted by wildfires. Earlier this year, the automaker donated to the California Fire Foundation to aid first responders and their families.
'Getting Azul back on the road will let its magic and message of hope continue,' said Rachael Zaluzec, SVP of Marketing for Volkswagen Group of America.

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — Before Hurston Waldrep earned his first major league win by pitching at a NASCAR venue, it was only fair that his day included a lengthy drive. Waldrep was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett, then pitched 5 2/3 innings for Atlanta in the Braves' 4-2 win over Cincinnati in the rain-delayed MLB Speedway Classic at Bristol Motor Speedway. The game started Saturday but was suspended in the first inning because of rain. Waldrep was told that night he'd be pitching Sunday — and to expect a car service early in the morning. 'Wake up at 4:45, got in the car a little after 5, drove here with my girlfriend. Got here 9:45 or so. Everything since then, it's been nonstop,' Waldrep said. 'Didn't really have time to sit here and think about how it all happened. Nonetheless, grateful for it, happy to be here. It's been an unbelievable day.' It's about 250 miles from Gwinnett, Georgia, to Bristol — which would be over 450 laps around the track at Bristol. Waldrep said he tried to sleep on the ride up, but that wasn't easy. Since he didn't arrive until Sunday, he missed the fanfare of the previous day, but he was there for most of the baseball. 'It was really breathtaking to walk out, see how they set everything up, see the field, and just hearing from the players how last night went,' he said. 'It was all around just awesome.' Waldrep made his big league debut in 2024, starting two games for the Braves. This was his first big league appearance this year. The 23-year-old right-hander allowed a run and three hits. 'After I took him out, I was like, 'Everything we put you through today you've done your job,'' manager Brian Snitker said. 'He's made a lot of strides. I think his time in Triple-A has been really really good for him.'

William Byron has enough fuel to win NASCAR Cup race at Iowa Speedway
NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — William Byron fought off fuel worries in the closing laps to win the NASCAR Cup Series race Sunday at Iowa Speedway. Byron went the last 144 laps of the 350-lap race without a stop en route to his second victory of the season — he won the Daytona 500 in February — and 15th overall. He also took the season points lead from Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott. Byron lost gambles on fuel twice this season, at Michigan and Indianapolis, but held on with the help of a caution-filled final stage to win by 1.192 seconds over pole-sitter Chase Briscoe. 'We needed one to go our way,' said Byron, who led 141 laps. Brad Keselowski, who came into the race needing a win to get into the playoffs, was third. Keselowski, who hasn't won since the May race at Darlington last season, won the first two stages for his first stage sweep since 2019. Ryan Blaney, who won the inaugural Cup race at the 0.875-mile oval last season, finished fourth, Ryan Preece was fifth. Bubba Wallace, Alex Bowman, Carson Hocevar, Joey Logano and Austin Dillon rounded out the top 10. There were 12 caution flags. The first stage was caution-free, and the first yellow flag for any on-track incident didn't come out until Shane Van Gisbergen's spin on Lap 169. From that point, the race became a cascade of caution flags as the cars began to stack up and drivers scrambled for position. Briscoe's bumps Briscoe was involved in two late incidents. Briscoe made contact with Erik Jones coming out of Turn 4 on lap 243, causing Jones to spin. Nine laps later, Briscoe bumped Tyler Reddick, who then hit Christopher Bell, causing Reddick and Bell to spin. Wallace overcomes early problem Wallace admitted Saturday that after winning last week at Indianapolis to secure a playoff spot, he would be able to relax over the last four races of the regular season. This race wasn't relaxing — he fell down by as much as two laps before finishing sixth. John Hunter Nemechek made contact with Wallace on Lap 242, forcing the rear-end of Wallace's car to hit the wall near the start/finish line. Wallace headed to the pits after Jones' spin to have a right-rear toe link repaired. Up next The series moves to Watkins Glen International in New York next Sunday. Chris Buescher is the defending race winner. Van Gisbergen has won three straight on road/street courses.
