Love may be blind, but park permits are not: event at Bengaluru's Cubbon Park runs into trouble

Indian Express2 days ago
A 'blind date' event–featuring anonymous, blindfolded conversations–planned for Bengaluru's iconic Cubbon Park has landed its organiser in trouble with authorities after failing to secure permission.
Vineet Kathoria, a 24-year-old college dropout from Laggere, organised the event through BookMyShow, charging participants Rs 999.
Scheduled to run every weekend between 11 am and 1 pm from August 2 to 31, the event was marketed as facilitating 'meaningful exchanges without judgment'.
Karnataka's horticulture department intervened after the event gained unexpected traction online, attracting over 1,400 interested participants within 24 hours. Deputy Director Kusuma G complained to the Cubbon Park police that the event would violate park regulations.
'Any events in Cubbon Park need prior permission. However, the event was organised, and tickets were also being sold online. I have filed a complaint at the Cubbon Park police station as well as with the cybercrime police station,' Kusuma said.
Cubbon Park operates under strict guidelines established following previous incidents. A May 2024 circular limits gatherings without official permission to 20 people, restricting activities to a designated 15-acre zone between the BSNL gate and the high court parking area. These regulations were strengthened after a 'Secret Santa' event organised by a community group called Cubbon Reads led to unexpected congestion and public complaints in December 2024.
The current case echoes that incident, where organisers faced detention after a small book-exchange event received an overwhelming response.
The police said that Kathoria, who abandoned his computer science studies and is unemployed, had submitted a written apology claiming ignorance of permit requirements. 'He stated he wasn't aware permission was needed to host such events,' a police officer said.

Disguised as sadhus, robbers loot cab passengers at Delhi traffic signals

On August 1, a woman was heading to Connaught Place in a cab. Near Shadipur flyover, the car stopped at a traffic signal and three 'sadhus' knocked on her window, seeking alms. The woman rolled down the window to give them Rs 200 — and one of them swiftly pulled off a gold and diamond ring from her finger and the trio fled. On Tuesday, the Delhi Police said it has arrested the three who posed as sadhus and robbed unsuspecting taxi passengers at traffic signals in West Delhi's Moti Nagar. The accused have been identified as Vinod Kamat (50), Birju (45) and his son Kabir (19), and goldsmith Gurcharan Singh (57). Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vichitra Veer said they received a call regarding the incident on August 1. 'On reaching the spot, the complainant reported that she was traveling from her residence in Moti Nagar to Connaught Place in a Rapido taxi. When the vehicle stopped at the red light near Shadipur Flyover, three men approached the vehicle,' Veer said. The officer said they smeared an ash-like substance on their bodies, perfecting the look of devout sadhus. The accused knocked on the complainant's window and begged for money. The complainant handed over Rs 200 to them — and lost her ring. During the investigation, police said CCTV footage from multiple cameras in the area near the crime scene were thoroughly examined. One camera showed the accused fleeing the spot in an auto-rickshaw. The auto owner was identified. On inquiry, the owner told police that she had rented the three-wheeler to Kamat and provided his mobile number. Police nabbed Kamat near Ashok Park Metro Station. Following his questioning, police raided a jhuggi in Punjabi Bagh and arrested Kabir and Birju. All three accused admitted to their involvement in the incident. Police said they had sold the stolen ring Gurcharan for Rs 26,000. A raid was conducted at his shop in GTB Nagar, and he was nabbed. 'During questioning, Singh admitted to purchasing the ring and melting it. He handed over the melted gold and 61 stone pieces,' another officer said. During further questioning, police said it was revealed that Kamat provided the getaway vehicle. Police said they are ascertaining if the accused have been involved in previous such cases.

Delhi man shot dead near Gurgaon's Kherki Daula Toll Plaza; second shooting incident in SPR area in 3 weeks

A Delhi resident was shot dead in Gurgaon Monday night in what is the second incident involving a shooting in public in the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) area in three weeks. The deceased has been identified as Rohit Shokeen, 39, son of Mahaveer Singh, a resident of Kamruddin Nagar in Delhi's Nangloi, which comes under the Nihal Vihar police station limits. He was gunned down off the SPR Road close to Kherki Daula Toll Plaza in Sector 77 at around 9 pm, the police said. 'The incident is believed to have stemmed from a long-standing property dispute,' a spokesperson for the Gurgaon police said early on Tuesday. 'A detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances behind the murder. A First Information Report (FIR) will be registered, and further action will be taken based on the evidence collected,' the spokesperson added. According to the police, Shokeen sustained three gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital after Virender Saini, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Manesar, and multiple police teams reached the site after receiving information about a wounded man. Shokeen was declared dead on arrival at the hospital, sources indicated. Authorities have yet to make any arrests in this connection, but police teams remained at the site until at least midnight. The development comes a little over a fortnight after Haryanvi singer-rapper Rahul Fazilpuria, 35, was shot at in the Southern Peripheral Road section near Badshahpur in Gurgaon's Sector 71. He had escaped unhurt in the incident. Fazilpuria was allegedly standing near his SUV when the attackers arrived in another car and opened fire. Soon after, the singer got into his car and sped away. The attacker could not chase him due to the traffic, and he reportedly managed to escape. According to Fazilpuria, the attackers fired at him multiple times, but he was not injured and his vehicle was not damaged. Soon, the police arrested a Sonepat resident who allegedly carried out the recce for the shooting. Later, a post surfaced on social media in which a person claimed responsibility for the shooting and said it was the fallout of a financial dispute involving Rs 5 crore that the singer had allegedly not repaid. CCTV footage had also emerged of a Tata Punch car following the singer prior to the shooting.
