In a move aimed at revolutionising digital rail services for passengers,
Indian Railways
officially launched the RailOne mobile application on July 1, 2025. Developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), RailOne integrates all major passenger services into a single platform, addressing long-standing challenges related to fragmented service apps. The new app combines the functionalities of multiple existing platforms—such as IRCTC Rail Connect, UTSonMobile, Rail Madad, National Train Enquiry System (NTES), and Food on Track—into one unified interface. With the growing demand for real-time, simplified, and mobile-based solutions, RailOne emerges as a strategic solution for millions of train travellers in India.
Available for free on both Android and iOS platforms for download, the application not only offers reserved and unreserved ticket bookings but also includes advanced tools such as live train tracking, food ordering, coach position information, PNR status updates, and refund management. Its development is part of Indian Railways' broader digital transformation agenda, aiming to enhance passenger convenience while ensuring operational efficiency.
RailOne app: Book tickets, order food, and check train status
RailOne eliminates the need for travellers to juggle between multiple apps. Instead of using separate platforms for bookings, food orders, or feedback, passengers can now access all services through one app. The single-sign-on feature allows users to log in using credentials from IRCTC or UTSonMobile, streamlining account access.
The app enables booking for both reserved and unreserved tickets through the "Plan My Journey" tool, covering various travel classes and quotas. A filter-based booking history section helps users keep track of past reservations efficiently.
RailOne app offers live train tracking and coach finder
One of the key features of RailOne is real-time train tracking. Passengers can view live updates on their train's status, platform number, and expected delays. The Coach Position Finder further assists in identifying where specific coaches will halt, simplifying the boarding process at crowded stations.
RailOne incorporates R-Wallet, Indian Railways' official digital wallet system. It supports secure transactions using biometric or mPIN authentication. Users can top up and manage their funds under the 'You' tab, without needing to rely on external payment gateways for every transaction.
RailOne app lets you order food and supports multiple languages
The app features a built-in food ordering system that lets passengers place meal orders from IRCTC-approved vendors during their journey. The integration of the Rail Madad platform means that passengers can raise complaints, track resolution status, and receive assistance all within the same app interface.
Recognising India's linguistic diversity, RailOne supports multiple regional languages to ensure that passengers across different states can access railway services without language barriers. This multilingual capability aims to improve usability among first-time app users and rural passengers.
Efficient refund and cancellation management
RailOne offers a streamlined system for managing cancellations and refunds. Whether due to train delays, cancellations, or passenger changes, users can initiate and monitor refund requests without navigating through different applications or web pages.
Tatkal booking and reservation system overhaul
In parallel with RailOne's release, Indian Railways is also making significant changes to its reservation infrastructure. Beginning July 1, tatkal bookings are restricted to verified users only, requiring Aadhaar or DigiLocker verification. OTP-based authentication is also expected to be implemented by the end of July.
The system for preparing waitlist charts has been extended from four hours to eight hours ahead of departure. For trains scheduled before 2 PM, final charts will be released at 9 PM on the previous day, offering travellers more clarity earlier in their journey planning.
Backend enhancements to handle growing passenger demand
Indian Railways has announced that by December 2025, the enhanced reservation system—being developed by CRIS—will be capable of handling 150,000 ticket bookings and four million enquiry requests per minute. These upgrades will improve system reliability, particularly during high-traffic periods such as holidays and festivals.
Special features will also be introduced for students, patients, and Divyangjan (persons with disabilities), ensuring more inclusive access to railway services.

Indian Railways adds new long-distance trains to strengthen connectivity in Punjab's Ferozepur

The Indian Railways has launched several new train services in Punjab's Ferozepur to enhance the region's rail network, and address long-standing demands for improved connectivity to key religious and commercial destinations. These new train services, starting in June, are expected to benefit thousands of passengers each month, providing smoother, direct access to key cities without the need for lengthy road journeys or multiple train transfers. The Firozpur Railway Division, which manages operations in this border region, plays a pivotal role in strengthening rail connectivity across Punjab and its neighbouring states. The division, which is under Northern Railway, handles both passenger and freight services, supporting trade, tourism, and regional development. Here is a list of new trains: Firozpur Cantt–Hazur Sahib Nanded Weekly Express The first significant addition is the Firozpur Cantt-Hazur Sahib Nanded Weekly Express, which commenced operations on June 13. This train covers a distance of approximately 2,000 km, connecting Punjab directly with Hazur Sahib Nanded, one of the five Takhts in Sikhism, in Maharashtra. Running once a week, the train departs Firozpur every Friday afternoon and reaches Nanded after nearly 38 hours of travel, offering AC and sleeper coaches to facilitate long-distance pilgrims and other travellers from the region. Earlier, passengers had to board trains via Ludhiana or Amritsar to reach this destination. Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu was to formally flag off this train on June 13 in a special organised function, but it was cancelled after the Ahmedabad plane crash incident. Hence, an ardas was performed at the railway station to formally flag off the train. Firozpur Cantt-Haridwar Weekly Express Another much-awaited link is the Firozpur Cantt–Haridwar Weekly Express, which began service on June 18. This train now provides direct connectivity from Firozpur to the holy city of Haridwar, a popular destination for devotees from Punjab. The train departs every Wednesday night and reaches Haridwar the following morning, offering a convenient overnight journey option for pilgrims and tourists alike. Earlier, passengers had to rely on trains running via Ludhiana, Amritsar, or other cities. Firozpur-Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali) From June 30 onwards, two daily trains have resumed service between Firozpur Cantonment and Mohali. One runs in the morning and another in the evening. 'This train was stopped in April 2020 during Covid, and afterwards it was never restarted. Now, we continuously took up the matter with the Union Government and got rail connectivity improved for Firozpur by starting many trains,' said Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi, BJP national executive committee member and former Guru-Harsahai MLA. Meanwhile, the Sutlej Express, operating under train numbers 14630/14629, has resumed service from Firozpur Cantt to Mohali. This daily express departs from Firozpur at 5:30 pm, reaching Chandigarh at approximately 10:40 pm, covering a distance of 236 km in around 5 hours. The Chandigarh–Firozpur Cantt Express, identified by train numbers 14614 and 14613, also resumed service from June 30. Covering the same 236 km route, the journey from Firozpur to Mohali takes approximately 4 hours and 45 minutes, and around 5 hours on the return journey. It departs Firozpur at 5 am daily. Like the Sutlej Express, it utilises general unreserved ICF coaches and operates daily, offering regular and economical connectivity for commuters and travellers. 'Now, there is a demand to add two AC coaches and one chair car to these trains,' said Heera Sodhi, a former State information commissioner and a Firozpur-based BJP leader. Intercity Superfast Express Additionally, the popular Intercity Superfast Express, which earlier operated between Moga and Delhi, will now be extended to start from Firozpur, running twice a week on Mondays and Fridays. 'A decision about this train has been made, but the Railways are yet to start it from Firozpur. We are hopeful that this train will start within a few days,' said Heera Sodhi.

Indian Railways' freight performance: Volumes up 2% in Q1; revenue flat as coal movement softens

This is an AI-generated image, used for representational purposes only. Indian Railways recorded a modest rise in freight traffic during the April–June quarter of FY26, with double-digit growth seen in key sectors like pig iron, finished steel, food grains, and container movement. However, this growth was tempered by a slowdown in coal, cement, and fertiliser loading during the same period, according to officials cited by ET. Total freight volumes rose 2 per cent year-on-year to 413 million tonnes (mt) in the first quarter, while revenue from freight operations also increased 2 per cent to Rs 44,870.4 crore. Coal, which makes up over half of Indian Railways' freight basket, continued to dominate but grew marginally. Railways transported 209.1 mt of coal, a rise of 1.7 mt compared to the same quarter last year. However, in June alone, coal movement slipped due to seasonal and logistical factors. Total freight volume for the month edged up 1 per cent to 136.7 mt, but revenue dropped 0.3 per cent to Rs 14,749.8 crore. The dip in revenue was mainly due to a 2 per cent decline in coal loading, which stood at 67.8 mt. Officials attributed the fall to early monsoon showers and sufficient coal stock at thermal power stations, reducing the urgency for fresh deliveries. In fact, the ministry of railways highlighted in a recent statement that coal reserves at Indian power plants reached a record high of 61.3 mt—enough to meet 25 days of consumption. 'The stockpile is now even higher than Canada's total annual coal production,' a senior railway official was quoted as saying by ET. This increase in availability was made possible by enhanced logistics infrastructure, particularly the adoption of silo-based mechanised coal loading. With coal demand easing temporarily, the availability of wagons for non-coal freight increased during the quarter. This shift allowed other commodities like steel and food grains to move more efficiently through the network. The steady container and pig iron movement also signals resilience in industrial supply chains and agricultural distribution. While the overall figures reflect stability in railway freight operations, the contrasting trends across sectors reflect the need for dynamic planning. Rising coal inventories may offer short-term logistical breathing room, but softer cement and fertiliser demand could point to underlying challenges in the construction and agriculture sectors. Looking ahead, Indian Railways is likely to focus on optimising wagon allocation and tapping new freight opportunities, particularly in sectors showing consistent growth. The Q1 performance offers a mixed but encouraging signal for the rest of the fiscal year. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
