The Hotter 2027 X5 Will Be Different In Every Single Way
When you're a kid, you think you want the best of everything, and certainly the fastest possible car, but in reality, you want something that doesn't draw attention from cops, isn't too expensive to insure, and won't drain a college fund every time you fill it up - something like the BMW X5 M60i. It still has a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 like the maniacal X5 M, but here, it's supported by mild-hybrid technology to improve efficiency. For the G65 X5, which will likely arrive for the 2027 model year, BMW will take things further by fitting a plug and making it a "real" hybrid. As a result, the name will become X5 M60e, but it comes with some compromises.
Since the last time we spotted the next-gen X5, not much has changed, so we'll discuss the looks at the end of this article. What matters is what's happening under the skin, and today's 523-horsepower output won't cut the mustard. Unfortunately, justifying the V8 when trying to make a shift toward cleaner cars is tricky, and BMW Blog reports that the hottest 'regular' X5 will have to do without, switching to a plug-in hybrid six-cylinder like the current M760e limousine. At least it should have "over 550 hp," according to the publication.
Even more evidence of Bavaria's ambition to see the X5 stand the tests of time and emissions legislation comes from a recent Autocar report, which cites "high-ranking sources" as saying that the next X5 may get range-extender tech, and it could spread up to the X7 and down to the X3, too. This makes sense. Scout Motors will offer EREVs, and so may the next Kia Telluride, showing that the market is clamouring for more efficient engines as well as EVs that can be used even when a charger isn't nearby.
Along with more power and more miles per gallon, the new X5 will still be expected to handle like a BMW, which is how our photographers caught these images at a Nürburgring industry testing day. While little has changed compared to our last sighting, the glass roof is clearer, and these appear to be production wheels. Their design is unlike anything we've seen in the BMW stable before, but big blue brake calipers with the obligatory M logos will ensure we instinctively know what brand made them. Overall, it's very similar to the Vision Neue Klasse X concept, and we think that'll make for a handsome face. We can also see some slight boxing around the arches, which will add presence, and a the rear, a quartet of exhaust pipes achieves the same, though the eventual G95 X5 M will surely turn things up to 11.
The sculpted mirror housings on this development mule look production-ready, too, and the camo over the windows might even indicate that this has a full interior, though it appears the driver is using instruments that won't be part of the Panoramic Vision infotainment system. This prototype looks like a set of production headlights and taillights away from being ready, but there's still plenty to be done. The G65 BMW X5's debut is only expected at the end of next year or early in 2027, so there's a lot more yet to be revealed.

BMW Recalls Four EV Models for Potential Loss of Drive Power
BMW is recalling over 70,000 EVs from 2022–2025 model years because of a software issue that can cause a loss of power while driving. The recall includes 35,414 units of the i4, 25,280 units of the iX, 5484 units of the i7, and 4674 units of the i5. According to the NHTSA documents, the electric motor software "may erroneously cause a shutdown of the high-voltage system," in turn causing the vehicle to lose power. The unwanted action comes as a result of the software mistakenly identifying a "double-isolation condition," leading it to display a red warning message and warning symbol on the dashboard screens around 15 to 20 seconds before cutting power. While NHTSA notes that power steering and braking are unaffected by the shutdown of the high-voltage system, it does state that if this shutdown happens while driving, it could increase the risk of a crash. NHTSA says vehicle assembly information and supplier production records were consulted to determine the dates of vehicles that might be affected. BMW The investigation began after a series of warranty claims in 2021 and 2022 associated with the electric drive motor. Following further investigations in 2023 and 2024, "the analyses suggested that vehicle software could not determine, whether a detected double-isolation condition was, in fact, a true double-isolation condition, which warranted a high-voltage system shutdown or, was, in fact, only a single-isolation condition," according to the NHTSA documents. To prevent the risk of electric shock, the software then turned off the high-voltage system. BMW decided to begin a voluntary safety recall on June 6. The automaker says it believes it has received around 43 warranty claims involving the shutdown of the drive motors at speeds over 20 mph. BMW received no reports of accidents or injuries caused by this problem. BMW will update the software for the electric motor for affected vehicles, either at dealerships or via an over-the-air update. Owners will be contacted by mail by August 5 and instructed to take their vehicle to a BMW dealer, with the option to perform the update over the air instead. In the meantime, owners can check the NHTSA recalls website to see if their vehicle is included in the recall. 2026 BMW M5 Touring Sinks Deeper Into Six Figures
The BMW M5 Touring arrived less than a year ago, and although it has an uncommon body style, plenty of buyers have gravitated to it quickly. Unfortunately, its magnetism may have to wane slightly with the 2026 model, as order guide data obtained by CarsDirect indicates a higher base price for the new model year. While the current 2025 model sells for $121,500 (before delivery or any options), the 2026 M5 Touring will reportedly retail for no less than $123,900, an increase of $2,400. What do you get for the extra cash? Just a new VIN, it seems. The new MSRP represents an increase of 2% and falls in line with a previous report from the same publication, which indicated that BMW's pricing would be increasing by as much as 3% from July, depending on the model. Although BMW will doubtless be impacted by new tariffs on imported vehicles, the increased prices don't appear to be a direct result thereof, as this is no more aggressive a price adjustment than we've seen from the Bavarian brand in years gone by. Indeed, the M5 sedan went from $119,500 for the 2025 model year to $121,900 for 2026. With the Touring getting a similar price bump, the difference between the two body styles remains $2,000. If you want an M car with four doors for less than six figures, you'll have to spring for the 2026 M3. With no updates for 2026, buyers won't be getting anything more for the extra outlay, but they're doing themselves and other wagon enthusiasts a service. According to BMW M CEO Frank van Meel, the wagon is outselling the sedan, and that may be good news for those hankering after an M3 with a long roof. Although the G81 M3 isn't available in the U.S., a BMW executive told BMW Blog earlier this year that the G99's success could lead to the M3 wagon being sold in America. Sylvia Neubauer, VP of Customer, Brand, Sales at BMW M, told the publication that "it's just too late for the current model of the M3 Touring," but hinted that enough vocalized demand could change that. "Please tell them [prospective M3 Touring buyers] to go for the M5 Touring. And tell the dealers next time when we ask the question that they say, 'Thumbs up, we want an M3 Touring.'" So if people keep buying the M5 Touring despite its price increase, and if those buyers keep pressuring their dealers to make an M3 wagon available in America, it could happen with the ZA1 M3, which is shaping up to be an absolute monster. Porsche's Most Elaborate Paint Job Yet Meets The 911 GT3 Touring
BMW is famous for its art cars, but Porsche might be even better at turning cars into decorative machines, and the new Porsche Lëtzebuerg Legacy 911 GT3 Touring created by the Sonderwunsch department illustrates that beautifully. Built to celebrate 75 years of Porsche in Luxembourg, the one-off was crafted in collaboration with local artist Jacques Schneider, with the wingless Touring version chosen as a base because of its understated design, which fits the character of the country it represents. The Red Lion, which is the small country's national animal, appears in several places, but the way in which this design came to life impresses just as much as the overall effect. "This unique sports car embodies the link between Porsche's automotive heritage and Luxembourg's cultural identity," according to Porsche Luxembourg Brand Manager Tom Weber. "It exemplifies a partnership that has lasted for more than 75 years and is characterized by trust, innovation and shared passion." Thus, a simple wrap would not have sufficed. Porsche describes the project and its paint job as the "most elaborate ever produced so far as part of a Sonderwunsch project," claiming that it involved more than 700 hours of work to finish. Related: Porsche Built Two "One-of-a-Kind" The Same Serial Number Painters applied a fine lion graphic (designed by Schneider) in Fire Red over the Ice Grey Metallic bodywork by hand, and this alone "required more than 20 production steps." Porsche adds that a blue tinge in the Ice Grey paint and red lion motifs reference the Luxembourg flag and its coat of arms. But there's more to this intricate one-off than just the new paint job. The standard 20- and 21-inch GT3 alloys have been laser etched with a repeating moniker of 'Vive,' short for 'Vive [long live] Luxembourg,' and from a distance, it almost looks like somebody has fitted the GT3 with beadlock wheels. Elsewhere, the B-pillars have a small plaque with the name of the project (as do the door sills), the front grille features the anniversary number 75, and the badging on the rear lid grille has been painted matte black, matching the wheels. Inside, a map of Luxembourg adorns the headliner, as do the opening lines of the Grand Duchy's national anthem in Schneider's handwriting: "Where the Alzette slowly flows, the Sura plays wild pranks, where fragrant vineyards amply grow. On the Mosella's banks; There lies the land for which we would dare everything down here, our own, our native land which ranks deeply in our hearts." Porsche had to use a special machine here and in the seat center panels and door center panels, saying that this elaborate embroidery is a first for the Sonderwunsch program. Another first is the decision to finish the accelerator pedal in Fire Red to match the exterior accents, which is something this 911 shares in common with the Golf GTI Edition 50. We dare you to mention that to the new owner, though - cars like this, especially ones with new finishing techniques, cost more to customize than buying an entire GTI several times over.
