Dehradun: Chief minister
Pushkar Singh Dhami
met Prime Minister
Narendra Modi
in New Delhi on Monday and sought financial assistance of Rs 3,500 crore for preparations for the Mahakumbh to be held in Haridwar in 2027.
Dhami informed the PM that initial preparations for the Mahakumbh have already begun. For its successful organisation, key infrastructure upgrades are required, including the repair of bridges, expansion of parking facilities, improvements in electricity and water supply, construction of toilets, transportation networks and pedestrian pathways for pilgrims.
The CM also invited Modi to attend the Nanda Raj Jat Yatra, a pilgrimage scheduled for Aug 2026, and sought Rs 400 crore in central assistance for its organisation.
Seeking support for religious tourism and infrastructure development, Dhami urged the PM to direct relevant ministries to support the Haridwar Ganga Corridor, Rishikesh Ganga Corridor and Sharda Corridor in Champawat, on the lines of the Kedarnath and Badrinath Dham master plans. He also proposed that funding for these projects could be mobilised through corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions.

Highlighting the state's long-term water security efforts, the CM said, "A preliminary proposal for the Pindar-Kosi link project has been prepared. The project aims to connect the glacier-fed Pindar River to the rain-fed Kosi, Gagas, Gomti and Garud rivers. If implemented, it could benefit around two lakh people across 625 villages in Bageshwar, Almora and Nainital districts by improving irrigation and drinking water availability.
Additionally, towns such as Garud, Kausani, Dwarahat, Ranikhet, and Almora would see an improved water supply for over 1.25 lakh residents." Dhami requested that the project be brought under a special Union govt scheme.
In a bid to boost industrial development, the CM proposed converting the Nepa Farm area in Udham Singh Nagar into a semiconductor manufacturing hub. He requested the PM's support in attracting industry investments for the same.
Dhami also called for the extension of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) from Delhi-Meerut up to Haridwar. He urged the inclusion of new route provisions under the Tanakpur-Bageshwar and Rishikesh-Uttarkashi rail projects.
In the power sector, the CM sought the approval of a Rs 1,015 crore detailed project report (DPR) under the revamped distribution sector scheme (RDSS). The project proposes undergrounding of high-tension (HT) and low-tension (LT) power lines and automation of the power system in Rishikesh and Haridwar.
The CM also apprised Modi about the state govt's efforts to restore Chaurasi Kutiya, the heritage site near Rishikesh associated with the Beatles' visit in 1968, to its original form. He said funding arrangements have been made and sought clearance from the National Board for Wildlife.
Additionally, Dhami requested early approval for five hydropower projects with a total generation capacity of 596 MW, based on the recommendations of a committee headed by the cabinet secretary.

The Union minister laid out a vision for an ecologically sustainable growth model that can blend commerce with carbon credits (Image: PTI) Municipal solid and liquid waste in India can be turned into a Rs 5-lakh-crore business, Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari said in his inaugural address at The Times of India Social Impact Summit in Mumbai. 'With the right approach, we can convert waste into wealth, create jobs, and address environmental concerns,' he said. 'Plastics can be turned into fuel, sewage into industrial-grade water, and even garbage into commercially viable products,' he added. Citing a project in Mathura that treats sewage flowing into the Yamuna, he said, 'That treated water is now being used by nearby Indian Oil refinery.' The particulates are treated with organic culture while the extracted sludge is turned into bio-flocculants. 'If we scale this up nationally, the potential is enormous,' he said. Gadkari drew from personal experience, saying: 'For the past nine years, I have been selling treated toilet water from my constituency, earning Rs 300 crore annually.' He highlighted clean energy as another area of potential. 'Thermal plants have traditionally used coal, but NTPC and the Maharashtra govt have started using biomass—also known as white coal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo It costs Rs 7 per unit but is far cleaner,' he said. With 17 percent of India's land classified as wasteland, he proposed bamboo plantations for biomass. 'We've invested Rs 5 crore to develop 1.5 lakh ha. Tree plantations around mines can earn carbon credits,' he said. A deeper rethinking of CSR in India is the need of the hour, said Sivakumar Sundaram, CEO (Publishing), The Times of India. 'India's CSR investment was approximately Rs 30,000 crore last year,' he said. 'But more important than the quantum is the quality—how we measure impact, how we embed sustainability into strategy, and how we turn compliance into conscience.' EU threatens countermeasures over US tariffs, Trump says he is open to talks

The European Union Monday accused the US of resisting efforts to strike a trade deal and warned of countermeasures if no agreement is reached to avoid the punishing tariffs President Donald Trump has threatened to impose starting on Aug 1. Trump, meanwhile, said he was open to further discussions with EU and other trading partners before new 30% tariffs kick in next month and that EU officials would be coming to the US for negotiations. "They would like to do a different kind of a deal and we're always open to talk, including to Europe," he told reporters in the Oval Office. "In fact, they're coming over. They'd like to talk." Trump stepped up his trade war on Saturday, saying he would impose a 30% tariff on most imports from the EU and Mexico next month, following similar warnings for other countries, including Japan and South Korea. EU has so far held off on retaliatory measures to avoid a spiralling tit-for-tat escalation while there remains a chance of negotiating an improved outcome. But EU ministers emerging from a meeting in Brussels Monday appeared closer to striking back. Speaking after the meeting, Danish foreign minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen called the tariff threat "absolutely unacceptable". EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic said he believed there was "still a potential to continue the negotiations" but voiced frustration with Washington's failure to agree to a deal with its largest trading partner. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 21st Century Skills Start with Confident Communication Planet Spark Learn More Undo He added EU member states agreed the 27-nation bloc would need to take countermeasures if the trade negotiations fail. Italy's foreign minister Antonio Tajani earlier said EU had already prepared a list of tariffs worth 21 billion euros ($24.5 billion) on US goods if they fail to reach a deal. Meanwhile, Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday she believed the two sides would reach a deal on security ahead of the Aug 1 deadline. White House has clarified the 30% tariffs on Mexico, would not apply to goods shipped under the USMCA trade agreement, which covers a vast majority of goods shipped from Mexico to the US. Sheinbaum said any agreement would not involve US forces entering Mexican territory, as previously floated by Trump. Reuters

Several people were feared dead, while at least 10 were injured after a tempo traveller rolled down a gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district on Tuesday. The vehicle was reportedly travelling through a hilly stretch when the driver lost control, causing it to veer off the road and roll down the steep slope. The exact number of passengers onboard is yet to be ascertained. Teams of the local police and rescue workers rushed to the spot soon after the incident and launched a rescue operation. Those injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment, and efforts are underway to retrieve others feared trapped in the wreckage. Last week, five people were killed and another was critically injured when a private passenger vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a 600-feet gorge in the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir. The SUV met with the accident near Senabathi in the Ukhral Pogal Paristan area late on July 11. Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Union Minister Jitendra Singh expressed grief over the accident and assured necessary support to the injured and families of victims. view comments First Published: July 15, 2025, 10:03 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
