OpTic roll to title in CoD Black Ops 6 event at Esports World Cup
After a pair of thrilling semifinals, the final turned out to be the most one-sided match of the tournament as OpTic Gaming dominated the Vancouver Surge 4-0 on Sunday to win the Call of Duty Black Ops 6 tournament at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The win not only netted OpTic the $600,000 grand prize but also earned the team a berth in the 2026 Esports World Cup. OpTic also received 1,000 club points in the EWC standings, their first points of the event. The Surge took home $320,000.
The day began with the four group winners facing off in the semifinals, sporting a combined 12-0 record since play began.
The Surge opened the day with a 250-241 win over KOI on Red Card Hardpoint. KOI responded with a 6-2 win on Dealership Search and Destroy. The teams split the next two maps, as well, with the Surge winning 3-2 on Vault Control and KOI taking Vault Hardpoint 250-161. In the deciding map, the Surge escaped with a 6-5 win on Protocol Search and Destroy.
OpTic took a much different path to the final, losing the first two maps in their semifinal against Team Heretics -- 250-249 on Skyline Hardpoint and 6-5 on Rewind Search and Destroy. But it was all OpTic from there, as the club won 3-2 on Hacienda Control, 250-186 on Rewind Hardpoint and 6-3 on Protocol Search and Destroy.
Then came the stunner. After jumping in front with a 250-236 result on Rewind Hardpoint, OpTic took a 2-0 lead on the Surge by winning Protocol Search and Destroy 6-1. Vancouver could not mount any sort of comeback, however, and fell 3-1 on Protocol Control and 250-118 on Hacienda Hardpoint.
KOI edged Heretics 3-2 in the third-place match, winning $200,000.

Yangon Galacticos makes most of opportunity at PUBG Mobile World Cup

The offline tournament was the mid-season international event of the 2025 PUBG Mobile competitive season. First prize was worth $547,000 and 1,000 club points to Yangon Galacticos, which won with 157 points, well ahead of Weibo Gaming (142), Alpha Gaming (141) and DRX (117). Galacticos, based in Yangon, Myanmar, and founded in 2017, represented the Southeast Asia Region. According to results in Liquipedia, the victory on Sunday was team's fifth consecutive title dating back to December 29, 2024. The $3.05 million tournament, part of the Esports World Cup, started July 25 and concluded Sunday, the third day of the grand finals. The event opened with the group stage from July 25-27 to determine the top eight teams to advance to the grand finals and the bottom 16 teams to move on to the survival stage on July 29-30. Yangon Galaticos was 11th in the group stage standings with 75 points, while Alter Ego Ares led with 121 points. The top eight teams at the survival stage advanced to the grand finals, and the bottom eight were ousted. Barely avoiding elimination, Yangon placed eighth at the survival stage with 70 points, one more than ninth-place INFLUENCE RAGE. Horaa Esports was first with 108 points. The 16 teams qualifying for the grand finals on Friday through Sunday played a total of 18 matches (six each day). Alpha Gaming's Uuganbayar 'DOK' Dulguun of Mongolia was selected Grand Finals Most Valuable Player and earned $50,000. In 18 matches, he had a kills/deaths ratio of 1.72 with 31 eliminations. Sea Bears make Surge pay
It was personal for the Winnipeg Sea Bears. Last week, the Calgary Surge social media team made an Instagram post poking fun at the Sea Bears for having four players from their 2023 roster: Simi Shittu, Trevon Scott, Maurice Calloo and Jordy Tshimanga. 'At this point y'all aren't building a roster — you're building a fan page. See you Sunday,' wrote the Surge prior to Sunday's showdown. BROOK JONES / FREE PRESS files Simi Shittu was making big plays at both ends of the court in the Sea Bears victory over the Surge. When the dust settled in Calgary, it was Winnipeg that had the last laugh as they prevailed 79-78 in dramatic fashion. After scoring the game-winning bucket off a nice dish by forward Emmanuel Akot, Shittu slammed the basketball over the Calgary bench and into the crowd before celebrating with teammates. 'It wasn't something that was on our mind, but I mean, we saw it. They went out of their way to tag us. I'm like, it's funny, ha, ha, ha, but like, grow up,' said Scott on Tuesday. 'We got real estate in their head over there. They just miss us, that's all that it means.' They certainly miss Shittu as the Canadian centre ate their lunch. He finished with 28 points, 15 points and three blocks. His biggest rejection came late when he swatted away a Sean Miller-Moore layup from behind that would've given the Surge the victory. 'When you talk about rundown blocks, everyone thinks about LeBron in (Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals on Golden State guard Andre Iguodala) and you think of these fantastic athletic plays, and that was right on par with it,' said Sea Bears head coach Mike Taylor. 'For Simi to make that play, it was something special. It was like an exclamation point that we're ready to come back.' The 27-year-old, who appeared in three games with the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers in 2021-22, signed on Friday. He played 16 minutes and picked up three points, three rebounds and three assists. Cumberland — the MVP of the NBA G League's Winter Showcase in 2021 — has never suited up in the CEBL but played four seasons at the University of Cincinnati alongside Scott. 'When Mike told me he was thinking of bringing him in, I was all for it. That's my brother. We're super close and had great chemistry in college,' said Scott. '(He brings) a lot of versatility on both sides of the ball, a lot of playmaking, a lot of scoring, a lot of everything. He's an all-around player and he affects the game in every category. It's most definitely a positive for us.' Adding Cumberland was necessary since point guard Terry Roberts, who left the team to play in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas with the Brooklyn Nets, has not returned to Winnipeg. Cumberland's arrival gives the Sea Bears five imports, meaning one needs to sit out every game. Forward Jaylin Williams was the odd man out Sunday. Players need to be on the active roster for at least three games to be eligible for post-season play. 'Everyone welcomed me, and I was appreciative. I felt good coming here,' said Cumberland, who was most recently in the NBA G League with the Delaware Blue Coats. 'Guys can feel some type of way (about someone now having to sit out), and I mean, it's a job… People sacrifice being away from their family and everything, so, I understand if they feel some type of way.
