SURGE ENERGY INC. ANNOUNCES SECOND QUARTER FINANCIAL & OPERATING RESULTS; INCREASED 2025 PRODUCTION GUIDANCE AND A LOWER CAPITAL BUDGET

("Surge" or the "Company") (TSX: SGY) is pleased to announce financial and operating results for the quarter ended June 30, 2025, as well as an update on the Company's latest operational achievements. View PDF As a result of continued, successful drilling results in Surge's two core areas, the Company is revising its 2025 operating and capital budget guidance. Average 2025 production guidance has now been increased from 22,500 boepd to 23,000 boepd, while budgeted capital expenditures for 2025 are now estimated to be $155 million, $15 million lower than Surge's original capital guidance of $170 million. Select financial and operating information is outlined below and should be read in conjunction with the Company's unaudited condensed interim financial statements and management's discussion and analysis for the three and six months ended June 30, 2025, available at and on Surge's website at Q2/25 MESSAGE TO SHAREHOLDERS During Q2/25, WTI crude oil prices averaged US$63.88 per barrel, and Surge generated adjusted funds flow ("AFF") 1 of $72.8 million, with cash flow from operating activities of $56.3 million. Strong drilling results in the Company's Sparky and SE Saskatchewan core areas continue to drive production outperformance, as compared to Surge's 2025 budget guidance press released on December 19, 2024. In the 1H/25, Surge's average production was 23,579 boepd (89 percent liquids), more than 1,000 boepd ahead of the Company's 22,500 boepd production guidance for 2025. In Q2/25, Surge's production averaged 23,589 boepd (89 percent liquids), also above the Company's budgeted average 2025 production estimate. This consistent production outperformance is primarily due to continued, successful drilling results in Surge's two core operating areas. At Hope Valley in the Company's Sparky core area, Management is encouraged by the lower decline production profile of the initial wells drilled in the play. Notably, the key discovery well at Hope Valley (09-30-046-4W4) has now been on production for 17 months, with cumulative production of more than 73,000 bbl. This well is currently producing significantly above Surge's internal type curve expectations 2. Based on these consistent core area drilling results, Surge is now upwardly revising the Company's 2025 average production guidance from 22,500 boepd to 23,000 boepd. Additionally, with the improved capital efficiencies experienced in its Sparky and SE Saskatchewan core areas, Surge is also reducing its capital expenditure budget guidance for the year. The Company now anticipates spending $155 million on property, plant, and equipment in 2025, a decrease of $15 million from Surge's previous capital guidance of $170 million. On this basis, the Company's capital efficiencies are now projected to have improved by more than 20 percent year-over-year, with annual capital expenditures dropping by over $40 million, from $195.1 million in 2024 to an estimated $155 million in 2025. In Q2/25, net operating expenses 1 were $17.08 per boe, a decrease of $3.23 per boe (16 percent) as compared to $20.31 per boe in Q2/24. This decrease in operating expenses is due to the Company's continued drilling and operational success in the Sparky and SE Saskatchewan core areas, which now represent over 92 percent of Surge's production. The combination of increased 2025 production guidance levels, together with lower than budgeted exploration and development expenditures and net operating expenses, has resulted in an increase to the Company's estimated 2025 free cash flow ("FCF") 1. Surge's 2025 annualized FCF is now forecasted to increase to $105 million from the previously budgeted $85 million 3. Surge's proactive hedging program continues to work as designed, reducing the impact of recent crude oil pricing volatility on the Company's cash flow from operating activities and FCF. In this regard, Surge has hedged 8,750 bbl/d of its Q3/25 oil production with an average floor price of approximately US$71WTI per barrel, representing approximately 50 percent of the Company's forecasted net after royalty production over this period. Q2/25 FINANCIAL AND OPERATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS In Q2/25, Surge's production averaged 23,589 boepd (89 percent liquids), above the Company's budgeted average 2025 production estimate of 22,500 boepd. During the quarter, WTI crude oil prices averaged US$63.88 per barrel, and Surge generated AFF of $72.8 million, with cash flow from operating activities of $56.3 million. During Q2/25, the Company spent $30.8 million on property, plant, and equipment, resulting in FCF of $41.9 million for the quarter. On this basis, FCF represented 58 percent of the AFF generated in the quarter. In Q2/25, Surge distributed $12.9 million in dividends to shareholders, representing only 18 percent of AFF generated during the period. In addition, Surge reduced net debt 1 by $16.9 million in Q2/25, decreasing from $246.0 million as at March 31, 2025 to $229.1 million as at June 30, 2025. Furthermore, Surge returned an additional $2.2 million to shareholders in Q2/25 through its ongoing share buyback program, repurchasing 431,100 shares under the Company's normal course issuer bid ("NCIB"). In total, Surge returned $32.0 million to shareholders during Q2/25 through its monthly base dividend, net debt reduction, and share buybacks. These shareholder returns represent 44 percent of Q2/25 AFF. Highlights from the Company's Q2/25 financial and operating results include: Higher than budgeted average daily production of 23,589 boepd (89 percent liquids); Generated $72.8 million of AFF, with WTI crude oil prices averaging US$63.88 per barrel; Decreased net operating expenses by 16 percent over the past year, from $20.31 per boe in Q2/24 to $17.08 per boe in Q2/25; Drilled 5 gross (5.0 net) wells in the quarter; Distributed $12.9 million to Surge's shareholders by way of the Company's $0.52 per share per annum base dividend (paid monthly); Decreased net debt by $16.9 million, from $246.0 million in Q1/25, to $229.1 million; Returned an additional $2.2 million to shareholders by way of the Company's NCIB; On an annualized basis, Q2/25 AFF represented 0.79 times Q2/25 net debt of $229.1 million; and The Company's $250 million first lien credit facility remained undrawn as at June 30, 2025, providing Surge with substantial available liquidity. OPERATIONS UPDATE: CONTINUED DRILLING SUCCESS IN SPARKY AND SE SASKATCHEWAN CORE AREAS DRIVES PRODUCTION OUTPERFORMANCE Surge's Q2/25 production averaged 23,589 boepd (89 percent liquids), more than 1,000 boepd ahead of the Company's budgeted average 2025 production estimate of 22,500 boepd. This continued production outperformance is primarily due to the ongoing, successful drilling results in Surge's two core areas, highlighted by consistent open hole multi-lateral drilling success at the Company's recent Sparky discovery at Hope Valley. Surge's Q2/25 drilling program was executed with one rig drilling in the Sparky core area, and consisted of a total of 5 gross (5.0 net) wells drilled in the quarter. Development and delineation at Surge's Hope Valley discovery continued through Q2/25, with the drilling of 3.0 gross (3.0 net) additional open hole multi-lateral horizontal wells. These three wells were drilled with 12 lateral legs each, accessing an average of 15,936 meters of shallow, conventional Sparky sandstone reservoir per well. Additionally, drilling and production operations for all three wells were completed during spring breakup, utilizing a single surface multi-well pad site. Surge has now drilled 12 multi-lateral wells at Hope Valley that have more than three months of production data since development of the area began in early 2024. These 12 wells have produced at an average IP90 rate of 215 bopd, exceeding Management's IP90 rate type curve expectations of 168 bopd by more than 25 percent 4. Surge has now assembled 36 net sections of land at Hope Valley. Management is encouraged by the continued outperformance and consistency of the key discovery well drilled at Hope Valley. The 09-30-046-4W4 Sparky well at Hope Valley was drilled using the 12-leg design and has already produced over 73,000 barrels of oil over the past 17 months. The 09-30 well has generated more than $4.6 million of net operating income 5, paid out in nine months, and has paid out nearly two times in 17 months 6. In Surge's SE Saskatchewan core area, the Company completed its 1H/25 drilling program on March 13, 2025 prior to shutting down drilling operations due to seasonal spring breakup conditions and associated road bans. Following Q1/25 drilling operations, Surge has experienced lower than anticipated decline rates and higher than budgeted production in its SE Saskatchewan core area. Based on this production outperformance, the Company was able to defer capital and delay its post breakup drilling program in SE Saskatchewan into Q3/25, with drilling resuming in mid-July. Currently there is one drilling rig operating in SE Saskatchewan, primarily focused on developing the Frobisher formation at Surge's light oil Steelman asset. To date in 2025, Surge has drilled a total of 26.0 net wells, while adding 78.0 net drilling locations to its inventory in the Company's Sparky and SE Saskatchewan core areas through organic Crown land sales and strategic land acquisitions. This adds to Surge's lower risk development drilling inventory of more than 900 net internally identified locations (as of January 1, 2025), providing an inventory of more than 12 years of drilling 4. As a result of continued, successful drilling results, Surge's Board and Management have upwardly revised the Company's 2025 annual production guidance from 22,500 boepd to 23,000 boepd, while also reducing capital expenditure estimates for 2025 by $15 million. Oil and Gas Advisories Barrel of Oil Equivalency The term "boe" means barrel of oil equivalent on the basis of 1 boe to 6,000 cubic feet of natural gas. Boe may be misleading, particularly if used in isolation. A boe conversion ratio of 1 boe for 6,000 cubic feet of natural gas is based on an energy equivalency conversion method primarily applicable at the burner tip and does not represent a value equivalency at the wellhead. Drilling Inventory This press release discloses drilling locations in two categories: (i) booked locations; and (ii) unbooked locations. Booked locations are proved locations and probable locations derived from an external evaluation using standard practices as prescribed in the Canadian Oil and Gas Evaluations Handbook and account for drilling locations that have associated proved and/or probable reserves, as applicable. Unbooked locations are internal estimates based on prospective acreage and assumptions as to the number of wells that can be drilled per section based on industry practice and internal review. OpTic roll to title in CoD Black Ops 6 event at Esports World Cup

The win not only netted OpTic the $600,000 grand prize but also earned the team a berth in the 2026 Esports World Cup. OpTic also received 1,000 club points in the EWC standings, their first points of the event. The Surge took home $320,000. The day began with the four group winners facing off in the semifinals, sporting a combined 12-0 record since play began. The Surge opened the day with a 250-241 win over KOI on Red Card Hardpoint. KOI responded with a 6-2 win on Dealership Search and Destroy. The teams split the next two maps, as well, with the Surge winning 3-2 on Vault Control and KOI taking Vault Hardpoint 250-161. Dewa and Shell explore ways to advance clean energy drive
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD&CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), welcomed a high-level delegation from Shell, led by Fakher Bader, Country Chair for Iraq and the UAE. The delegation included Geraldine Wessing, Chief Political Analyst – Strategy Insights & Scenarios; and Hessa Abdulla, MENA Media Lead. The meeting centered on Shell's latest report, The 2025 Energy Security Scenarios: Energy and Artificial Intelligence, which explores how AI could reshape global energy systems through three distinct pathways: Archipelagos, Horizon, and Surge. These scenarios are vital tools for strategic decision-making, helping stakeholders anticipate future challenges, assess risks, and identify opportunities in a rapidly evolving energy landscape. Discussions also highlighted opportunities for synergy in advancing a circular and green economy. Al Tayer shared Dewa's pioneering projects in clean energy, particularly the ongoing development of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the world's largest single-site solar park based on the independent power producer (IPP) model. Its current capacity is 3,860 megawatts (MW), with a planned capacity of 7,260MW by 2030 (the original plan was 5,000 megawatts). The 1,800MW sixth phase of the solar park uses the latest bifacial solar photovoltaic technologies with single-axis tracking. This phase, developed under the IPP model, will provide clean energy for approximately 540,000 residences and reduce around 2.36 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. Al Tayer also highlighted the Al Shera'a building, Dewa's new headquarters, which will be the tallest and largest net-positive energy government building in the world. Al Shera'a is designed to achieve platinum certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and silver certification in the WELL Building Standard. The building will leverage advanced technologies including the Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics and AI, alongside modern renewable energy solutions that ensure outstanding efficiency. He also underlined Dewa's remarkable achievements in adopting AI technologies. Dewa has launched a strategic roadmap to become the world's first AI-native utility, integrating artificial intelligence across all core operations. This supports Dewa's global leadership, ranking first worldwide in 12 key performance indicators in its areas of work. In 2024, Dewa recorded the world's lowest electricity transmission and distribution network losses at 2%, compared to 6% to 7% in Europe and the USA. Water transmission and distribution losses were also the lowest globally, at 4.5%. Additionally, Dewa set a world record for the lowest customer minutes lost (CML), achieving 0.94 minutes per year, compared to an average of 15 minutes in the European Union. Here's the list of websites gig workers used to fine-tune Anthropic's AI models. Its contractor left it wide open.
An internal spreadsheet obtained by Business Insider shows which websites Surge AI gig workers were told to mine — and which to avoid — while fine-tuning Anthropic's AI to make it sound more "helpful, honest, and harmless." The spreadsheet allows sources like Bloomberg, Harvard University, and the New England Journal of Medicine while blacklisting others like The New York Times and Reddit. Anthropic says it wasn't aware of the spreadsheet and said it was created by a third-party vendor, the data-labeling startup Surge AI, which declined to comment on this point. "This document was created by a third-party vendor without our involvement," an Anthropic spokesperson said. "We were unaware of its existence until today and cannot validate the contents of the specific document since we had no role in its creation." Frontier AI companies mine the internet for content and often work with startups with thousands of human contractors, like Surge, to refine their AI models. In this case, project documents show Surge worked to make Anthropic's AI sound more human, avoid "offensive" statements, and cite documents more accurately. Many of the whitelisted sources copyright or otherwise restrict their content. The Mayo Clinic, Cornell University, and Morningstar, whose main websites were all listed as "sites you can use," told BI they don't have any agreements with Anthropic to use this data for training AI models. Surge left a trove of materials detailing its work for Anthropic, including the spreadsheet, accessible to anyone with the link on Google Drive. Surge locked down the documents shortly after BI reached out for comment. "We take data security seriously, and documents are restricted by project and access level where possible," a Surge spokesperson said. "We are looking closely into the matter to ensure all materials are protected." It's the latest incident in which a data-labeling startup used public Google Docs to pass around sensitive AI training instructions. Surge's competitor, Scale AI, also exposed internal data in this manner, locking the documents down after BI revealed the issue. A Google Cloud spokesperson told BI that its default setting restricts a company's files from sharing outside the organization; changing this setting is a "choice that a customer explicitly makes," the spokesperson said. Surge hit $1 billion in revenue last year and is raising funds at a $15 billion valuation, Reuters reported. Anthropic was most recently valued at $61.5 billion, and its Claude chatbot is widely considered a leading competitor to ChatGPT. What's allowed — and what's not Google Sheet data showed the spreadsheet was created in November 2024, and it's referenced in updates as recent as May 2025 in other documents left public by Surge. The list functions as a "guide" for what online sources Surge's gig workers can and can't use on the Anthropic project. The list includes over 120 permitted websites from a wide range of fields, including academia, healthcare, law, and finance. It includes 10 US universities, including Harvard, Yale, Northwestern, and the University of Chicago. It also lists popular business news sources, such as Bloomberg, PitchBook, Crunchbase, Seeking Alpha, and PR Newswire. Medical information sources, such as the New England Journal of Medicine, and government sources, such as a list of UN treaties and the US National Archives, are also in the whitelist. So are university publishers like Cambridge University Press. Here's the full list of who's allowed, which says that it is "not exhaustive." And here's the list of who is banned — or over 50 "common sources" that are "now disallowed," as the spreadsheet puts it. The blacklist mostly consists of media outlets like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and others. It also includes other types of sources like Reddit, Stanford University, the academic publisher Wiley, and the Harvard Business Review. The spreadsheet doesn't explain why some sources are permitted and others are not. The blacklist could reflect websites that made direct demands to AI companies to stop using their content, said Edward Lee, a law professor at Santa Clara University. That can happen through written requests or through an automated method like Some sources in the blacklist have taken legal stances against AI companies using their content. Reddit, for example, sued Anthropic this year, saying the AI company accessed its site without permission. Anthropic has denied these claims. The New York Times sued OpenAI, and The Wall Street Journal's parent, Dow Jones, sued Perplexity, for similar reasons. "The Times has objected to Anthropic's unlicensed use of Times content for AI purposes and has taken steps to block their access as part of our ongoing IP protection and enforcement efforts," the Times spokesperson Charlie Stadtlander told BI. "As the law and our terms of service make clear, scraping or using the Times's content is prohibited without our prior written permission, such as a licensing agreement." Surge workers used the list for RLHF Surge contractors were told to use the list for a later, but crucial, stage of AI model training in which humans rate an existing chatbot's responses to improve them. That process is called "reinforcement learning from human feedback," or RLHF. The Surge contractors working for Anthropic did tasks like copying and pasting text from the internet, asking the AI to summarize it, and choosing the best summary. In another case, workers were asked to "find at least 5-10 PDFs" from the web and quiz Anthropic's AI about the documents' content to improve its citation skills. That doesn't involve feeding web data directly into the model for it to regurgitate later — the better-known process that's known as pre-training. Courts haven't addressed whether there's a clear distinction between the two processes when it comes to copyright law. There's a good chance both would be viewed as crucial to building a state-of-the-art AI model, Lee, the law professor, said. It is "probably not going to make a material difference in terms of fair use," Lee said.

The '10x engineer' is old news. Surge's CEO says '100x engineers' are here.
As the Silicon Valley saying goes, the "10x engineer" is capable of producing 10 times the work of their colleagues, developing projects and writing code at a quicker pace. In the age of AI, a top-end engineer's multiplier is itself getting a multiplier, according to Surge CEO Edwin Chen. Chen boot-strapped his way to $1 billion in revenue. The CEO of Surge self-funded his company, taking no VC money — though he's now reportedly looking to raise up to an additional $1 billion in capital. On the 20VC podcast, he said a 100x engineer is now possible — and could help lean startups reach new heights. "Already you have a lot of these single-person startups that are already doing $10 million in revenue," Chen said. "If AI is adding all this efficiency, then yeah, I can definitely see this multiplying 100x to get to this $1 billion single-person company." Efficiency gains can be vital to startups looking to stay lean. Chen said that Surge was already "so much more efficient" than its peer companies like Scale AI, Surge's biggest data labeling rival, which reportedly brought in $870 million in 2024 after multiple rounds of funding. Chen also said that Surge's lack of a sales or PR team helped keep it lean. While the "10x engineer" dates back to a 1968 study about programming performance, the term was later popularized among Silicon Valley executives. In his book "Zero to One," Peter Thiel coined the "10x improvement" rule, claiming that startups needed to improve on existing alternatives by a factor of ten. Chen is a believer in the " 10x engineer." Some are 2-3x faster at coding, or work 2-3x harder, or have 2-3x less side tasks, he said. Multiplied together, engineers can reach 10x productivity. "2-3x is often actually an understatement," Chen said. "I know people who literally are five times more productive coders than anybody else." The advent of generative AI and coding tools supercharges Chen's math: "Add in all the AI efficiencies that you get. You just multiply all those things out and you get to 100," he said. Agentic AI coding tools have taken over much of software engineering, writing code for developers, sometime with minimal human editing necessary. But these tools still need a prompt, which Chen said makes them most useful to those who have high-level ideas.
