Back to school: How much is it costing you to equip your child?
That long list of school supplies, according to a recent study by the Retail Council of Canada, could total anywhere between $650 and $750 per child.
If that's the situation you find yourself in, the Council says there's only really one way to curb costs: start shopping now.
According to the study, parents who fill their carts (real or virtual) early have a better chance of finding items at low prices or on sale.
It also makes it easier to find some very specific objects (JCloth cleaning wipe, anyone?) that may be on the list.
'The price, finding bargains and spreading the cost over several months are definitely the main factors that come into play,' Francis Mailly, vice-president of public affairs at the Retail Council of Canada, tells Noovo Info.
The study also highlights the fact that parents are moving away from online shopping in favour of heading directly into stores, as we get further removed from the pandemic.
'We're seeing that 99 per cent of parents, which is the vast majority, plan to shop in stores,' said Mailly.

Stock Market Today: Applied Digital Soars 31% on CoreWeave Deal and Earnings Surprise
Applied Digital (NASDAQ: APLD) stock skyrocketed 31% on Thursday to close at $13.14, making it one of the day's top-performing small-cap tech stocks. The rally was likely related to the company's stronger-than-expected fiscal Q4 earnings report (released Wednesday after market close) and a major expansion of its long-term lease agreement with AI hyperscaler CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV). The company saw trading volume more than 2.5 times its recent average, indicating heavy institutional interest. While Applied Digital remains about 17% below its 52-week high of $15.42, the stock decisively broke above recent resistance levels and is now up sharply year-to-date. Broader markets traded softly, the S&P 500 declined 0.4%, while the Nasdaq Composite was effectively flat (down 0.03%) after briefly hitting an all-time intraday high. Still, Applied Digital significantly outperformed key peers. DigitalOcean (NYSE: DOCN) was little changed at +0.2%, while Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI) slid 2.9%. In fiscal Q4, Applied reported $38 million in revenue, up 41% year over year, and an adjusted EPS loss of $0.03, easily beating analyst expectations. Most notably, the company announced that CoreWeave exercised a 150-megawatt (MW) lease option, boosting total contracted capacity to 400 MW and unlocking up to $11 billion in potential revenue over the next 15 years. CEO Wes Cummins emphasized acceleration at the company's Polaris Forge 1 campus and reiterated long-term plans to generate $1 billion in annual NOI within 3–5 years, supported by demand from hyperscale cloud customers. Public feedback now open on new Roseland Golf Course Clubhouse design
City officials say there will be no impact to the historic Donald Ross designed golf course, but a new clubhouse will be built and the potential for a new condominium complex has been envisioned. (Source: City of Windsor) The City of Windsor's plans for a brand-new clubhouse at Roseland Golf Course are moving ahead — and now it's the public's turn to weigh in. Thursday's open house at the existing Roseland clubhouse wrapped up at 7 p.m., with dozens of residents and golfers stopping by throughout the afternoon to review concept boards, ask questions, and offer their feedback on the proposed design. 'We've had a great turnout,' said Roseland general manager Dave Deluzio. 'It's good to see people from the community that aren't golfers, as well as golfers who use the facility. We're getting a lot of good feedback.' The concept — developed by international consulting firm GGA Partners — calls for a modern, 5,500-square-foot, one-storey clubhouse with a smaller footprint than the current building. Roseland Golf Club concept Source: City of Windsor. It would face the course and putting green, offering covered outdoor seating instead of traditional indoor dining, and feature a grab-and-go food and beverage service, upgraded washrooms, storage, and administrative space. Golfers and neighbours alike are invited to continue sharing their thoughts through an online survey, which is now live and runs until Aug. 15. 'The golfers are excited to have a clubhouse again — a place to dine before and after golf — and the community is looking for something modern and social,' Deluzio said. Roseland Golf Club concept Source: City of Windsor. The city has allocated $5.7 million for the project through its 10-year capital plan, which will cover the demolition of the existing clubhouse, temporary arrangements for staff, and the design and construction of the new building. The concept and public feedback will be reviewed at a future Windsor City Council meeting. To learn more or to fill out the online survey, visit
