What to know about Florida sales tax holiday, St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River first days
As summer draws to a close, kids are preparing to return to school. While parents get ready to pay for uniforms and school supplies, and students prepare for the school year, here's what to know about when school starts and the back-to-school sales tax holiday. What is included in Florida's tax-free holiday? In June, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed HB7031, a $1.3 billion tax cut package that includes replacing Florida's back-to-school tax-free weekend with an entire month of tax-free sales on school supplies. The sales tax holiday runs from Aug. 1 through Aug. 31, according to the Florida Department of Revenue. Here's what is included in the sales tax holiday. Personal computers or personal computer-related accessories purchased for noncommercial home or personal use, having a sales price of $1,500 or less, including: Calculators Desktops Electronic book readers Handhelds Laptops Tablets Tower computers Personal computer-related accessories, including: Keyboards Mice Modems Monitors Nonrecreational software Other peripheral devices Personal digital assistants Routers Wallets and bags having a sales price of $100 or less per item, including: Backpacks Diaper bags Fanny packs Handbags Briefcases, suitcases, and other garment bags are excluded. New schools: Summertime is construction time for Treasure Coast school districts Early bird: New state law means some Treasure Coast high schools likely to continue early start times When is the first day of school in Indian River County? The first day of school in Indian River County is Aug. 11. When is the first day of school in Martin County? The first day of school in Martin County is Aug. 11. When is the first day of school in St. Lucie County? The first day of school in St. Lucie County is Aug. 11. Did Treasure Coast schools switch start times? In 2023, a new state law required middle schools to begin no earlier than 8 a.m., and high schools no earlier than 8:30 a.m., citing studies that showed teens perform better with a later start to their school day. However, after school districts complained that changing school start times would cost millions to alter school bus routes, state lawmakers considered alternatives. SB 296, which took effect July 1, allows school districts to comply if they report their school start times and detail the steps they've taken to implement later start times at middle and high schools. The report must describe the impact later start times would have on the district and any unintended consequences to the school district, students and the community. Here's where each county stands in its start times: Martin: No changes are planned for the 2025-2026 school year. In 2024, the district adjusted its start times slightly to be one of the first to comply with the 2023 law. St. Lucie: No schedule adjustments are planned to school start times in St. Lucie County schools. The district's middle schools already comply, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and 9:40 a.m. Indian River: Middle and high school students will see no changes in start times for the 2025-2026 school year, but the district may still survey parents to gauge interest in adjusting the start times, TCPalm reported. Colorado teacher has advice on how to save money as kids head back to class
With school starting soon, many Colorado families are doing their back-to-school shopping. With rising costs, many families are also looking to save money for the upcoming semester. According to the National Retail Federation, families with children in elementary school up to high school plan to spend about $858 on back-to-school shopping, which includes school supplies, electronics and clothes. That's down from $874 last year. First, check what you already have at home. Make a shopping list of the items you need and then set a budget. Katie Bergman, who teaches creative writing at Aurora Central High School, recommends being flexible on the brands you're buying. "I've noticed that the school supplies for kindergarteners are around $35 up to somewhere in the range of $50, just depending on what kind of brands you buy. If you're looking to buy the cheapest brands, those are usually going to be around $30, $35 and name brands will be more costly at $50. Bergman also said she shops at several different places and usually finds the best deals at Walmart or Amazon. "I do find that Walmart ultimately will always have the best pricing. Places like Amazon are good, especially if you need bulk supplies. So, Amazon is going to be great for teachers or for families with many children. You can buy, for example, a big box of highlighters and separate them among your children," said Bergman. She added, "You can also kind of do that at Walmart, where you know the classroom supply list might have four packages of Crayola markers for a total of two students. Each will get two, and if you buy them in bulk, you'll get a better price." Begin shopping early on or spread out the shopping over time, and shop during back-to-school sales events. Stores like Target, Walmart or Office Depot will have savings events. You can also submit an Amazon wish list to your friends or family to make things more affordable.

Dallas Midtown Improvement District hosts back-to-school fest
It may be hard to believe, but your kids will be heading back to school next month. The Midtown Improvement District hosted a back-to-school fair to make sure Dallas students not only have the supplies but need but also to peak interest in STEM learning. About 1,000 students in Midtown Dallas got school supplies at the back-to-school event to get them ready for the upcoming school year. Hundreds of thankful parents lined up at Dallas' Vickery Park Branch Public Library to get clear backpacks filled with folders, pens, papers, and much more. "The event means a lot to me, but it also means a lot to the community because with inflation going up, prices going up, crayons are not 25 cents or 50 cents like they used to be. I have this paper, knowing I have to buy a lot more, but just getting this little amount and the backpacks helps. A small amount helps, and every little thing goes a long way," parent Jasmine Moore said. The event included fun, free giveaways as a diverse group of students prepare to go back to the classroom. Students also got free books, crayons, and food, and they enjoyed balloon art and face painting. Midtown Improvement District co-executive director Shannon Freeman said about a dozen local businesses donated supplies for the fest. "We are really just trying to bring everyone in the community together," Freeman said. "I hope this starts our children off in the community for a great start. The first day of school, we want them to start day one being prepared." The organization expects to give out backpacks filled with supplies to students in the district at their schools if they missed the event.

Back to school: How much is it costing you to equip your child?
Children across the country are heading back to school in about a month's time, and that means a guaranteed shopping frenzy for parents needing to equip their little (or not so little) ones with pens, books, lunch boxes and more. That long list of school supplies, according to a recent study by the Retail Council of Canada, could total anywhere between $650 and $750 per child. If that's the situation you find yourself in, the Council says there's only really one way to curb costs: start shopping now. According to the study, parents who fill their carts (real or virtual) early have a better chance of finding items at low prices or on sale. It also makes it easier to find some very specific objects (JCloth cleaning wipe, anyone?) that may be on the list. 'The price, finding bargains and spreading the cost over several months are definitely the main factors that come into play,' Francis Mailly, vice-president of public affairs at the Retail Council of Canada, tells Noovo Info. The study also highlights the fact that parents are moving away from online shopping in favour of heading directly into stores, as we get further removed from the pandemic. 'We're seeing that 99 per cent of parents, which is the vast majority, plan to shop in stores,' said Mailly.
