Defensive Player of the Year Patrick Surtain II voted NFL's top cornerback by AP
His shutdown season also helped him earn the top cornerback spot in voting by a panel of eight AP Pro Football Writers who ranked the top five players at the position, basing selections on current status entering the 2025 season. First-place votes were worth 10 points. Second- through fifth-place votes were worth 5, 3, 2 and 1 points.
Surtain received five first-place votes and three seconds. Sauce Gardner got two first-place votes, finishing second. Cooper DeJean got the other first-place vote, appearing on only one of eight ballots.
Derek Stingley Jr. finished third, Trent McDuffie was fourth and DeJean placed fifth.
Jaylon Johnson, Marlon Humphrey, Charvarius Ward and DJ Reed also received votes.
1. PATRICK SURTAIN II, Denver Broncos
Surtain had an outstanding season, allowing just 37 receptions and recording four interceptions to earn All-Pro honors.
Opposing quarterbacks had a 61.1 passer rating when targeting Surtain, who became just the second Broncos player to win the AP Defensive Player of the Year award.
He received three second-place votes along with the five firsts.
2. SAUCE GARDNER, New York Jets
After earning All-Pro honors his first two seasons in the NFL, Gardner had a down year by his standards. Still, he appeared on seven ballots to finish behind Surtain.
Gardner has forced a league-high 46 incompletions and allowed a league-low 0.60 yards per cover snap since his rookie season.
3. DEREK STINGLEY JR., Houston Texans
Stingley was a first-time All-Pro last season, emerging as one of the NFL's best cover cornerbacks.
Selected one spot ahead of Gardner at No. 3 overall in the 2022 draft, Stingley had a breakout season last year. He had five interceptions and gave up 40 catches for 382 yards and four TDs.
Stingley got three second-place votes and five fourths.
4. TRENT MCDUFFIE, Kansas City Chiefs
McDuffie earned All-Pro honors as a slot cornerback in 2023 and was second-team All-Pro after moving back outside last season.
While the Chiefs don't use McDuffie to shadow opposing receivers, he is an elite cover guy.
McDuffie allowed 54 catches for 545 yards and four TDs in 2024.
He received one second-place vote, two thirds, one fourth and four fifth.

5. COOPER DEJEAN, Philadelphia Eagles
DeJean's first career interception was a pick-6 against Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl, helping the Eagles dominate the Chiefs in a 40-22 victory.
A second-round pick in 2024, DeJean was a super slot cornerback for Philadelphia. He didn't allow a TD on 97 targets.

NYC shooting gunman left behind note appearing to blame NFL for brain injury
The lone shooter who killed four people and wounded a fifth at a New York City office building on Monday before taking his own life carried a note with him that appeared to blame the National Football League (NFL) for a brain injury, Mayor Eric Adams told reporters Tuesday. The attacker, 27-year-old Shane Tamura, opened fire in a Manhattan building where the NFL has its headquarters, but wound up in a different part of the building after getting on the wrong elevator. 'He seemed to have blamed the NFL,' the mayor told WPIX-TV. 'The NFL headquarters was located in the building, and he mistakenly went up the wrong elevator bank.' Tamura, who investigators believe drove from his home in Las Vegas to New York City over three days, was carrying a note that said he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease brought on by head trauma, and blamed the condition for his mental illness, Adams said. A source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN that the note was written over three pages and called the letter a 'suicide note.' The late Terry Long was a former American football player who starred as an offensive lineman for eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL. Long ended his life in June 2005, at the age of 45, by drinking a large amount of antifreeze. An autopsy later revealed that Long was suffering from CTE. Tamura had mental health crisis holds in Nevada in 2022 and 2024, ABC in New York reported. The shooting happened along Park Avenue, one the nation's most recognized streets, and just blocks from Grand Central Terminal and Rockefeller Center. It's also less than a 15-minute walk from where UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed last December by a man who prosecutors say was angry over corporate greed, and Monday's attack could bring further attention to security in the business world. A degenerative brain disease, CTE has been identified in athletes and military combat veterans who sustained concussions or repeated blows to the head. It can be diagnosed only posthumously through an examination of the brain. Stokes fought tooth and nail to hand India a loss in the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester that would have wrapped up the series 3-1, but little did he and the rest of his squad realize this India squad led by newcomer innings and Shubman Gill isn't prepared to roll over and surrender. It matched the drama of the fourth Test at Lord's, where England nosed out India by 22 runs. At Old Trafford, India lost its first two wickets without a run on the board and 311 runs behind England's imposing first-innings total of 669. Few expected an Indian team minus recently retired greats Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin to fight back with such vigour, but it appears that the country has embraced new skipper Gill who has led with his bat. He received solid support from the ever-dependable KL Rahul (90) and the two starred in a partnership of 188. Skipper Gill, who has been a thorn in England's side, stroked a superb 103 in his near seven-hour, stamina-sapping stay at the wicket before losing his prized wicket to Jofra Archer. That took his overall total in this series to 722 runs, well ahead of Rahul who has 511. India coach Gautham Gambhir was full of praise for his skipper. 'An important thing is that he's living up to his expectation, his own talent, and more importantly is (that) he is the captain and has a burden of pressure,' Gambhir said. His departure raised England's hopes, but there was more pain to follow for the home team while millions of fans back in India had their fingers crossed that all-rounders Ajay Jadeja and Sundar Washington would pull it out of the fire. Jadeja, for long considered one of the greatest all-rounders in the game, lived up to his reputation while the up-and-coming Washington soaked up the pressure and combined to frustrate an England attack that ran out of ideas. Stokes has spent the past couple of days resting in bed, but has made it clear no pain will stop him from taking the field at The Oval on Thursday. Apart from the hurt and pain, Stokes and England has been roundly criticized for its petulant behaviour against Jadeja and Washington on the final day at Old Trafford.
