"Nobody Dared To...": Kolkata Student Narrates 'Mango' Mishra's Terror
Such was the terror of Monojit 'Mango' Mishra on campus that women students of the Kolkata law college, where a 24-year-old was raped last week, considered skipping classes to stay out of his way. Speaking to NDTV on the condition of anonymity, a former student of the college said all students "feared" Mishra, an alumnus who had graduated but returned as a contractual employee.
"There was an atmosphere of intimidation on the campus. He used to click photos of female students, morph them and circulate them on WhatsApp groups. He also sexually harassed them. There was so much intimidation that students were scared to attend classes," she said.
"There have been several complaints about him throughout Kolkata. In 2019, he sexually harassed a woman in college, tore off her clothes. In 2024, he beat up a security guard and vandalised college property. He was also involved in some kind of theft. There have been several FIRs filed against him, but nobody took any action because of his political influence. He was so politically safeguarded by the Trinamool Congress that nobody dared to touch him," she said.
"I don't think there is any girl (in college) who wasn't harassed by him (Monojit). There were many complaints. Even his parents disowned him," she said. Monojit's father is a priest in the Kalighat temple and his mother suffers from neurological issues.
The Trinamool has now distanced itself from Monojit, but students say he claimed proximity to the party's top leaders and everyone on campus, including teachers, feared him. The Opposition has alleged that it is with the ruling party's backing that anti-social elements like Monojit commit crimes and get away with them.
Monojit, the prime accused in the rape case, and co-accused Pramit Mukhopadhyay and Zaib Ahmed have been arrested after the survivor, a 24-year-old law student alleged that he raped her on campus on June 25 and the other two recorded videos of the heinous act to blackmail her later.

'Bihar Voter List Revision Before Election A Conspiracy': Tejashwi Yadav To NDTV
Patna: The revision of voter lists ahead of the Bihar election later this year has been branded a 'conspiracy' by Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition and whose Rashtriya Janata Dal is expected to pose the biggest challenge to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party - Janata Dal United 's hopes of re-election. Mr Yadav also claimed the Election Commission was acting on 'orders' from the BJP; the EC, he alleged, had been effectively told to 'delete the names of poor and marginalised voters'. Speaking to NDTV Tuesday evening, Mr Yadav pointed out an overhaul of voter lists can take up to two years and asked why this exercise had been taken up now, with the election less than six months away. "The last time the routine process of revision of voter list was done was 2003... it has not happened since. And when it happened in 2003 it took about two years to complete," he said. At that time the revision concluded just before the next Assembly election. "Now elections are held to be held in November... two months are left before the notification process begins. That means the Election Commissibon has to make a new list... of eight crore people... in just 25 days. And that too when 73 per cent of the state is affected by floods!" Mr Yadav raged. The comments echoed last week's X post; he accused the BJP of 'conspiring to strip people of Bihar of voting rights', and said the party would 'under the guise of a special intensive revision... remove your vote... That requirement has been flagged by Mr Yadav and other opposition leaders, including Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who called it a 'sinister move' to enforce the controversial National Register of Citizens in Bihar - as a 'test' case before the high-stakes election in her state in 2026. "Eleven documents are being sought (by Bihar voters who registered after 2003)," Mr Yadav told NDTV, "... but according to the Government of India, only two to three per cent of the people have these documents. This is clearly a conspiracy to remove crores of people from the voter list." "I am not afraid of defeat... but the names of crores (i.e., poor people who may not have access to the documentation to keep their names on the voter list) will be removed. Why? The Constitution has given all the right to vote..." he said, "This should have been done after the Lok Sabha poll." "Even now the forms (for inclusion in the list) have not been distributed in many areas. We are only asking for time from the Election Commission... but have not received any information." Meanwhile, the Election Commission has said voter list revision is a standard exercise before every Lok Sabha and state election, and is meant to ensure every eligible voter is counted and can exercise his/her franchise. The EC cited various reasons - 'frequent migration, first-time voters, non-reported deaths, and inclusion of non-Indian illegal immigrants' - as having necessitated a revision this time. Poll panel sources also said political parties had been advised to appoint representatives as booth level agents, or BLAs, at all polling stations now - to monitor the revision exercise - rather than find fault later. That message was a clear reference to allegations made by the Congress with respect to the Maharashtra and Haryana elections. The Congress, which lost both, has claimed voter lists were manipulated to ensure a BJP victory in both states. The EC has firmly denied all such claims. The revision exercise began on June 25 and the revised voter list is due September 30. The poll panel has uploaded a list of 4.96 crore voters who registered before 2003, and said these people need not submit additional proof of citizenship. "They just have to verify details given in the 2003 electoral rolls and submit an 'enumeration form', the EC said in a statement issued Monday. On Chief Minister Ambitions Tejashwi Yadav also spoke to NDTV about tension over the opposition Mahagathbandhan alliance's chief ministerial candidate. The RJD leader is widely seen as the only real candidate for that post, but the Congress, which is an ally at the state and federal levels, has not, so far, backed him in the race. Sources told NDTV last month the Congress is holding off on that support while it evaluates the possibility of striking out on its own, in an effort to rid itself of the 'junior partner' tag in the alliance. Rajasthan 'Tantrik' Sent To Police Custody For Kidnapping, Raping Minor Girl
Kota: A self-proclaimed occultist (tantrik) was remanded to police custody in Jhalawar district on Tuesday after he allegedly kidnapped and raped a minor girl for over three days, police said. According to police, Prahald Mehar (41) of the district allegedly raped the minor girl repeatedly after promising her family to perform some rituals on the victim to remove the "ill influence of spirits" on her. Mehar had also promised the family that the rituals would get them rid of their debts. The matter came to light on June 23 when the survivour's father filed a police complaint. According to the complaint, Mehar, promising to rid the family of their problems, called them to his Ashram under Raipur police station limits on June 22, Jhalawar SP Richa Tomer said. There, he pretended to perform the rituals on the minor girl till late at night; however, the two were missing from the place on June 23 morning. Subsequently, police launched a search operation after receiving the complaint. It eventually concluded on Thursday last week when the minor girl was rescued from Ajmer district, the SP said. Mehar, who was detained last week, was arrested on Monday after the victim underwent a medical checkup, which confirmed the sexual assault. A case was registered under relevant sections of the BNS and POCSO Act, and Mehar, on Tuesday, was produced before the court, which remanded him two-day police custody, police said. Trinamool urges Election Commission to use 2024 as base year for voter list revision
A delegation of the Trinamool Congress on Monday (July 1, 2025) urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to adopt 2024 as the base year for any revision of the electoral rolls. The delegation met the Commission against the backdrop of its decision to undertake a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar, a process the panel has said will eventually be extended to all States. West Bengal is scheduled to go to elections in 2026. 'The voters enrolled till 2024 should remain irrespective of any condition,' Trinamool MP and party Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha, Kalyan Banerjee, told presspersons after the meeting. Mr. Banerjee said that while the ECI stated its objective behind the SIR is to ensure that 'no voter is left behind,' certain recent circulars reflect an approach of 'eligibility first and inclusion later'. He said the party raised concerns over the requirement of birth certificates for verification. 'They [ECI] said those who already are voters will remain voters. West Bengal Minister and MLA Firhad Hakim, who was part of the delegation, raised the issue of central forces allegedly entering polling booths and influencing voters. 'We proposed to them that if central forces are there, State police should also be present inside the booth. No forces should enter the area where polling is done inside the booths,' Mr. Hakim said.
