Red Bull chief slams George Russell comment as Mercedes chase Max Verstappen

Daily Mirror6 hours ago

George Russell let slip Mercedes' ongoing talks with Max Verstappen a day before Toto Wolff confirmed his contact, though Red Bull bosses Helmut Marko and Christian Horner seem unmoved
Red Bull bosses have played down the chances of Max Verstappen quitting for rivals Mercedes. It was confirmed this week that the Silver Arrows remain in talks with the four-time Formula 1 champion, with driver George Russell first bringing up the subject.
On Thursday, media day before the Austrian Grand Prix, the Brit said that "conversations with the likes of Verstappen are ongoing" at Mercedes. And, a day later, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff confirmed that he has remained in contact with the Dutchman over a potential switch.

Not that bosses at Red Bull seem to be too concerned. Driver development chief Helmut Marko, who has a close relationship with Verstappen, responded to the claims by simply stating: "We can't actually take this seriously. Russell just talks too much."

And team principal Christian Horner also sounded confident as he told Dutch television: "They are just rumours. We know very well where we stand with Max, and where we stand contractually with Max. So yes, the rest is just a lot of noise at this point."
Mercedes have a strong driver line-up comprising of Russell, who has started the 2025 season with impressive consistency and secured his first win of the year last time out in Montreal, and teenager Kimi Antonelli who the Silver Arrows hope can become the next big superstar of F1.
Both are out of contract at the end of this season, which has helped to fuel the speculation that Mercedes might convince Verstappen to make the switch. But while Wolff said he has remained in touch with the Dutchman's camp, he made it clear that is remains far more likely that his current drivers will still be in their seats in 2026.
He said: "There is no delay in George's contract negotiations because it has been clear for a long time what our timings were and we've known each other for such a long time, so there is no such thing as a delay.

"But as a team principal for the best car brand in the world, it is clear that you're exploring what a four-time world champion is going to do in the future. That could be long into the future, but it has no effect on putting our signature on George's contract."
Regarding the nature of any conversations he has had with Verstappen about a potential future with Mercedes, Wolff added: "It's also a long-term perspective and to understand what the framework he is operating on, no more than this."
And he was clear in his response when asked specifically by Sky Sports if he felt it was more likely that Mercedes will field Russell alongside Antonelli, rather than Verstappen, in 2026. "Yes," was his immediate reply.

Chelsea battling Premier League rivals for Joao Pedro after bid rejected

Joao Pedro has thrived for Brighton in the Premier League since joining from Watford but the Seagulls face a tall order to keep hold of the Brazilian international Chelsea are battling it out with Newcastle to sign Brighton striker Joao Pedro. Newcastle have already had a £50m-plus bid turned down by Brighton who will not allow the Brazil international to go on the cheap. Chelsea are also keen and have held discussions over signing the 23-year-old who would add options and versatility to their forward line. That would raise serious question marks over the futures of Christopher Nkunku who has been heavily linked with Manchester United and also Nicolas Jackson. ‌ Jackson was sent off in the Club World Cup which means he has been serving a ban in two separate competitions after missing the end of the Premier League season after getting a red card. ‌ Brighton have rejected bids from two separate Premier League clubs with Liverpool and Arsenal also having been linked with the versatile forward who can play through the middle and wide. Chelsea have held discussions but are now pushing to get a deal done and it remains to be seen whether they can agree a deal. Chelsea have been very active in this window as they are still looking to get a deal done for Borussia Dortmund 's Jamie Gittens. Brighton signed Pedro from Watford in a deal worth around £30m in the summer of 2023 and will want to get a big profit. Pedro, who has scored 30 goals in 70 Albion appearances, is a long-term target of Newcastle as who were also keen in 2022. But now Newcastle face a fight on their hands with Chelsea and other Premier League clubs keen on the Brazilian. Pedro was banished from Fabian Hurzeler's squad for the final two Premier League matches of the season following an alleged training ground spat with Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke. Now his future could be elsewhere if anyone can meet Brighton's price. Earlier this month, Brighton boss Hurzeler suggested he expects to have Joao Pedro and Kaoru Mitoma back for pre-season training. Mitoma was the subject of interest from the Saudi Pro League last season but ended up staying put. ‌ "For sure. I'm really looking forward for both of them," the boss tols Sky Sports. "They're great players and they helped us a lot last season. They're expected to be back next week." Brighton have already spent big this summer, with Greek striker Charalampos Kostoulas joining from Olympiacos for around £30m. Tommy Watson and Diego Coppola have also completed moves, from Sunderland and Verona respectively. "I think they all have great potential. We keep doing our way, signing young players with big potential and trying to develop them," Hurzeler added. "That's what we'll try to do with these new signings and I'm sure they will make us better." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Lewis Hamilton warns Charles Leclerc as Ferrari learn their Austrian GP fate

Ferrari brought a floor upgrade to the Austrian Grand Prix which Lewis Hamilton wasn't sure would work, but qualifying in Spielberg suggested the Italians have found more pace Lewis Hamilton was delighted with "a fantastic result" as Ferrari's latest upgrades worked a treat in qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix. Team-mate Charles Leclerc was only beaten by pole-sitter Lando Norris while Hamilton also starred to make it two Ferraris in the top four. It was the 40-year-old's best Grand Prix qualifying result of the year so far and a performance he was delighted with, even if he felt there was more on the table. Hamilton smiled: It's a fantastic result. The team have worked hard to bring us a new floor this weekend. ‌ "Considering yesterday [in practice] we were a lot further off, six or nine tenths off, it's nice to be much closer and on the second row, which is really fantastic. My last lap wasn't perfect and I think I could have been second, so there's lots of positives to take out of that. ‌ "We continue to pull together to protect each other and block out all the noise. It's an incredible team and we're working to put all the pieces of the puzzle in the right place. I'm really really happy with the progress we're making." He was less than one tenth of a second slower than Leclerc and the seven-time F1 champion thinks he's starting to level the playing field. He said: "I'm edging closer in terms of performance of Charles, who's really, really used to the car. He hardly ever changes anything, so that's really positive. "Also, I had more time in the lap. I was nearly three tenths up going into turn six and I had a massive snap going in, and then I came across the line six tenths down. So that would have put me second." But Hamilton refused to say whether he felt he could convert it into a maiden Ferrari podium, having targeted that before this season only to suffer on race day. He smirked: "Every race I've been saying I can't wait to get that first podium, so I'm not going to say that today! I'll just stay quiet and try to do a better job tomorrow." ‌ Like Hamilton, Leclerc has been critical of Ferrari's car this season but seemed much happier with the upgrades introduced this weekend. He said: "Monaco was the last time we started on the front row and it's been a difficult season overall, but the team have kept pushing and we brought some new parts this weekend which for sure made a difference. "If you look at the gaps, everybody is super close so it's a big thanks to the team. I'm happy with the lap and we know that we normally have a better car during the race than in qualifying so, hopefully, we can put a bit more pressure on the McLarens." "The upgrades definitely helped us today. How much is difficult to know but, when you see how fine the margins were – apart from Lando – it definitely helped us to get to the front row. We did a great job and have worked very well this weekend. I'll do everything I can to make the McLarens' lives as tough as possible."

Ferrari qualifying 'fantastic result'

Austrian Grand PrixVenue: Red Bull Ring, Spielberg Date: 29 June Race start: 14:00 BSTCoverage: Live commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live; live text updates on BBC Sport website and app Lewis Hamilton said Ferrari's second and fourth places on the grid at the Austrian Grand Prix were a "fantastic result".Hamilton qualified fourth with team-mate Charles Leclerc second at the Red Bull Ring. It matched their best result in a grand prix qualifying session this season, which was in came after Ferrari introduced a new floor, their first car upgrade since the Bahrain race in April."The team have worked hard back in the factory to bring us a new floor this weekend," Hamilton said. "For us to be much closer and be on the second row, and for Charles who is on the front row, I think that's really fantastic."Hamilton, who was just 0.09 seconds slower than Leclerc, said he believed he could have qualified second had he optimised his final seven-time champion said: "My last lap wasn't perfect, I think that could have been, if I had finished that, would have been second."So there's lots of positives to take out from that session. Also I think it has been the best day, operationally, particularly through qualifying, how the team operated, just timings, the information we are getting in terms of traffic and positionings on track, it was the best, it was proper world class. That is what we are working towards."Ferrari's improved performance comes in the wake of criticism in the Italian media in recent weeks - two influential newspapers wrote articles questioning Frederic Vasseur's position as team appeared to be referencing this when he said: "Ultimately, we continue to work together, protect each other, block out all the noise and just keep our heads down."It's an incredible team. We're working, and I'm working with Fred, we're working to put all the pieces of the puzzle in the right place, step by step."It can't be done in one go. Just got to keep working at it. I'm really happy with the progress we are making."Leclerc said: "Very happy to be second. It's been a very difficult season for us qualifying-wise."We've always been fighting for P5, P6 in best cases, apart from Monaco. That was a one-off. So, it's good to be starting a little bit further up, and to be straight away with the fast guys, straight from the start."Leclerc said the first signs from the new floor were positive but that it would take time to be sure of its influence."It definitely helped us," he said. "I felt like there were some steps forward. How much, we need to see it in different characteristics of tracks."It's not only on this track that we've got to judge that, but over multiple tracks."However, the numbers that we expected, we had them, which is a good start. That means that we are working in the right direction."
