Springbok, Stormers star named URC Player of the Season
Feinberg-Mngomezulu follows in the footsteps of former Lions utility back Sanele Nohamba (who is currently plying his trade in Japan), and his Stormers teammates Evan Roos and Manie Libbok, who won the award in the last three seasons.
The talented 23-year-old came up trumps after going up against two of his Springbok teammates, the Bulls duo of Cameron Hanekom and Wilco Louw.
SA Rugby president Mark Alexander praised the young star's outstanding season: 'Sacha is undoubtedly one of the finest young talents in the country. His ability to deliver quality performances consistently is a testament to the excellent player he is. He lit up the field this season and made a massive contribution to his team's success on attack, scoring in every possible way.'
The former Junior Springbok captain made his Test debut against Wales at Twickenham in June last year, and went on to earn eight caps for the Springboks in their impressive 2024 season, in which they won 11 out of 13 Test matches and were crowned the Rugby Championship winners.
'I'm not shy to admit that I've been injured a few times and have begun to understand the rehab process,' Feinberg-Mngomezulu commented. 'But this time it was different. I had a different focus and drive to get back to playing good rugby again. I wanted to come back harder and stronger, and I feel I did.
'I think that's why I'm so honoured by the Player of the Season award. Prior to my return from injury I was very clear about wanting to return and play at an optimal level. I was really working hard behind the scenes. I have never worked so hard in my career to come back. I wanted to push myself as hard as I could to help my team, and this award really encapsulated all of that for me.'

Time for long-range thinking on the sports betting front
Surprisingly, the Boks are not considered favourites for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Members of the Springbok team in a huddle during the 2023 Rugby World Cup final in Paris. Picture: Steve Haag/Gallo Images The sports bonanza of July 2025 is drawing to a close but that doesn't mean wagering opportunities are over – far from it. Many a life-changing coup has been landed at a humble August Vaal race meeting – or a canny long-range flutter on the footie has come to bountiful fruition. Remember Leicester City! Hopefully we've prospered from a brilliant horse racing season in KwaZulu-Natal, the Open Championship, the Tour de France, Grands Prix and MotoGPs, the Women's African Cup of Nations, the Women's Euros and even the World Darts Matchplay and have a tidy fund with which to tackle the rest of the year – and the next one. Speaking of long-range, it might be a tad surprising for Springbok fans to learn that their heroes are not favourites to win the 2027 Rugby World Cup. South Africa are 3.65 to complete a hat-trick of titles, with New Zealand preferred at 3.50. France are a 5.00 chance, ahead of Ireland 6.00, Australia 8.00, England 8.95 and Argentina 29.00. Much sooner, though, there's the southern hemisphere Rugby Championship, starting in mid-August, and the Women's Rugby World Cup, starting a week later. Billions of sports bettor eyes around the world will turn to the English Premier League, which kicks off on 15 August. Defending champions Liverpool are 2.90 favourites to do it again, with Arsenal at 3.25, Manchester City at 3.95 and Chelsea at 9.50. Newly promoted Sunderland and Burnley are 1,000-1 chances – and 1.33 and 1.36 favourites for relegation. Those odds will change a lot in time and, to tie up the value of your hunch, this might be a good time to strike. In Italy's Serie A, Napoli are 2.80 for another win. In Spain's La Liga, Real Madrid (1.72) edge perennial fierce rivals Barcelona (2.20). It's not only the strongest country competitions that are open for a football bet. Punters can venture as far afield as leagues in Finland, Mexico, China, Slovenia and Ecuador. Horse racing On the horse racing front, locally it's a fairly quiet time as everyone catches their breath and starts preparing for the Highveld spring season. For the farsighted, Betway odds are available on next year's Cheltenham Festival in the UK. As if to mock the long-range forecasters, the favourite for the Cheltenham Gold Cup is a horse called Inothewayyourthinkin (4.50). These Betway odds are correct at time of publishing and subject to change.

Lions claw Sharks in Currie Cup opener
The Lions kept hurting the Sharks by farming the left flank before the break. Maxwane plucked the ball effortlessly out of the air from a cross kick to score his first try, while his second was far more straight forward benefiting from an overlap. The Sharks only made it onto the scoreboard in the 68th minute and only through a sloppy error from the hosts. Replacement flyhalf Kade Wolhuter botched his attempt to collect the ball close to his try-line, though he might have been put off by Lombard who also tried to prevent Phiko Sobahle from scoring. The Lions, however, quickly reminded that they are the dominant force when they again found the Sharks' wanting down the left. This time, Davids, running down that flank had two inside runners to pick from with his final pass and he sought and found Jonker that stunningly underlined the Lions' superiority on the day. Scorers Lions (24) 46 — Tries: Jarod Cairns, Rabz Maxwane (2), a penalty try, Angelo Davids, Rynhardt Jonker, Layton Horn. Conversions: Lubabalo Dobela (3). Penalty: Dobela. Sharks (0) 5 — Try: Phiko Sobahle.
