GE2025: 'Views must be grounded in reality' – PAP's Alex Yam on opposition proposals to reduce GST
Follow our live coverage here.
SINGAPORE - While the opposition is free to offer counter narratives and alternative proposals to combat the rising cost of living, many parties do not address how future needs may be funded, said PAP candidate for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC Alex Yam in response to calls by opposition parties to roll back the goods and services tax hike.
Mr Yam was speaking to the media on April 25, after a two-hour walkabout with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in the vicinity of Yew Tee MRT station where the duo visited nearby malls and a senior care centre.
At rallies on April 24, opposition parties had criticised the Government's decision to raise GST rates from 7 per cent to 9 per cent in two stages in 2023 and 2024, despite inflationary pressures.
The Workers' Party, Progress Singapore Party (PSP) and Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) had said that the tax increase has impacted cost of living, with PSP and SDP calling for a reduction in GST rates.
Mr Yam said that while the Government hears a lot of demands from the opposition, they don't hear enough of how much the alternative proposals would cost.
'Very often, even when they provide some sort of alternative, it does not come with actual numbers and calculations that make sense,' said the North West District mayor.
'The Government has always been prepared to listen to other views and take them on board, but they must be grounded in reality, not made purely (made) as political statements.'
Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC will see a face-off between a PAP team led by PM Wong, and a SDP team led by party organising secretary Mr Jufri Salim. The PAP team is an unchanged slate from the 2020 elections comprising Mr Yam, Senior Minister of State for Defence and Manpower Zaqy Mohamad and Ms Hany Soh.
The SDP line-up comprises alternative news site founder Mr Ariffin Sha, theatre director Alec Tok and former entrepreneur Gigene Wong.
Mr Yam also weighed in on SDP secretary-general Dr Chee Soon Juan's decision to contest in Sembawang West SMC against Ms Poh Li San from the PAP, instead of Bukit Batok, where he had contested in the 2020 General Election and 2016 by-election.
At the PAP rally on April 24, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said Dr Chee had not given Bukit Batok residents a good reason for why they were 'abandoned' and cautioned voters to be careful of politicians who are not honest about their intentions.
Countering that, SDP chairman Paul Tambyah drew a parallel to significant slate changes made at the last minute to the PAP's Punggol and Chua Chu Kang GRC teams. Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong was deployed to Punggol GRC in a surprise last-minute switch on Nomination Day, while Manpower Minister Tan See Leng was moved from Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC to lead the PAP team in Chua Chu Kang.
In response, Mr Yam said the PAP had explained why the slate changes were made, as Punggol needed a good heavyweight minister like DPM Gan who can carry the ground there.
'The difference is that Dr Chee made a public pledge not to abandon Bukit Batok,' he said.
'Here you have an individual who made a promise, but yet changed his mind. That's the point Mr Ong (Ye Kung) was trying to make,' added Mr Yam.
He was referring to Dr Chee's pledge to contest in Bukit Batok SMC in the upcoming polls, which he declared in a Facebook video in mid-February before the release of the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee Report. It was later announced that Bukit Batok SMC would be absorbed by Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC.
On the SDP's 'northern strategy' in this election, Mr Yam added that the PAP does not 'have a choice of a northern campaign, or a southern campaign or a central campaign.'
'Our responsibility is to every Singaporean. We run (for) every single seat with the hope of being able to secure representation in Parliament so we can do our best for Singaporeans.'
Mr Yam also addressed an assertion by Mr Sha a smaller margin of victory for the PAP would push the ruling party to work harder. Mr Sha had said that a PAP that wins with 80 per cent of the vote is very different from a PAP that wins by 60 per cent of the vote.
Mr Yam said the PAP has always worked on the basis that every vote counts.
'After the election results are out, regardless of the margin, if we have the opportunity to become the Government, we must make sure that we deliver on our promises,' said Mr Yam.
Describing this election as a watershed one in light of the global climate, Mr Yam added that the PAP's Marsiling-Yew Tee team has received lot of support and encouragement from residents.
'This is, of course, a good sign but we shouldn't rest on our laurels. It does mean that we must continue to work hard to secure every vote, not just in our GRC, but across Singapore,' he said.

New S'pore jobs portal launched for North West District residents looking for work near home

SINGAPORE – Job seekers in Singapore's northwest looking to work near their home can now find opportunities more easily, with the launch of a new online portal which curates jobs in the North West District. The district comprises Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, Nee Soon GRC, Sembawang GRC and Bukit Panjang SMC. The Jobs Anywhere @ North West portal, by NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) and FindSGJobs, currently has about 10,000 job vacancies. Jobs on offer include those at heartland merchants, such as hairdressers, and at hawker stalls, for stall assistants. The portal was launched on Aug 2 at the SkillsFuture Festival @ North West at Causeway Point in Woodlands. Mr Alex Yam, the mayor of North West District, said the jobs portal was developed in response to feedback from residents over the years. 'We understand that many residents face challenges finding flexible and part-time work opportunities near home, due to caregiving duties or other circumstances,' said Mr Yam, who is also an MP for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC. He hopes the portal will help such residents find suitable jobs at heartland merchants. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. It has seven outlets, including one at Block 166 Woodlands Street 13. He typically advertises job vacancies by sticking job ads in his shop window. He said he has found it difficult to find Singaporeans to fill vacancies even though he offers flexible work arrangements. He decided to list the vacancy on the new jobs portal after being approached by Community Development Council staff. 'Hopefully more people will be coming in to interview for the job,' he said. He is hiring hair therapists, to help with tasks such as hair washing. The portal lists both full-time job opportunities and flexible 'microjobs' which typically refer to short-term or temporary work. A separate jobs portal, called the Heartland Job Portal, was launched in August 2024 for those looking to work near their home, though this portal lists job vacancies islandwide. Speaking at the launch of the portal, Mr Yam also acknowledged that the job landscape has become increasingly competitive, especially for the youth. 'Beyond securing employment, our youths continue to face significant stress in their search for fulfilling careers,' Mr Yam said. Mr Alex Yam, the mayor of North West District, said the jobs portal was developed in response to feedback from residents over the years. PHOTO: LIANHE ZAOBAO Beyond job matching, the platform offers career guidance and employment resources, Mr Yam said. This is where youths can find 'the right advice and right upskilling opportunities as well', he said. Ten training providers, including NTUC Learning Hub, James Cook Institute and Republic Polytechnic had booths at the festival, highlighting courses in the digital, green and care sectors. The care sector includes social services, early childhood, healthcare and community care. Ms Kameeni Mehta, 56, visited the event to learn more about artificial intelligence courses on offer. She left having signed up for two AI courses held over the weekends, so she will not have to take time off from her job at an insurance company. She said she was keen to learn a new skill, and picked AI to 'keep abreast with changes'. 'At a certain age, you just can't be complacent', said the Woodlands resident. 'AI is keeping everybody on our toes, and it's fascinating.' The SkillsFuture Festival @ North West is being held at Causeway Point on Aug 2 and 3.

Microsoft launches AI accelerator to help firms develop agentic AI road maps

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry Low Yen Ling at Microsoft's office on Aug 1 for the launch of its Agentic AI Accelerator programme. SINGAPORE – In the future, when an e-mail from a client on the commencement of a legal suit lands in the inbox of law firm Rajah & Tann, an artificial intelligence (AI) agent programmed to process it can automatically forward it to lawyers with the most relevant experience, suggest key legal issues to be addressed and even draft preliminary legal opinions. This is an example of how Rajah & Tann partner Rajesh Sreenivasan envisions agentic AI systems could supercharge the firm's work, and he hopes the company will be able to tap on a newly launched AI accelerator programme to do that. Agentic AI are AI systems designed to autonomously make decisions, and it can plan and execute complex tasks to meet predetermined goals. An example of this is autonomous driving vehicles. On Aug 1, Microsoft announced the launch of its Agentic AI Accelerator programme, at an event at its office at Frasers Towers. The programme will offer selected businesses up to $700,000 in services to co-develop their agentic AI road map with technology partners like EY, NCS and Accenture Avanade. Up to 300 local businesses will also receive baseline support of up to $250,000 of Azure cloud credits and AI training and tools. The AI accelerator programme is part of the Government's Enterprise Compute Initiative (ECI) , designed to help Singapore-based companies with their AI transformation projects. Announced in Budget 2025, the $150 million initiative sees the Government supporting firms by co-funding 70 per cent of consultancy costs, capped at $105,000 per enterprise. Microsoft is the third company coming on board the ECI programme, after Google and Amazon Web Services. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. 'An AI agent could be able to evaluate some of the issues (in a dispute) and come up with a draft defence, before actual lawyers come in to properly look into it. Agentic AI systems can become part of a legal team,' said Mr Rajesh, who emphasised that lawyers ultimately have to be responsible for the legal advice. Microsoft Singapore's acting managing director Cynthia Yeo pointed out that agentic AI is the next wave of cutting-edge technology. Unlike traditional AI, which waits for human prompts, agentic AI can work alongside people or even independently to complete complex tasks. Organisations where teams of humans and AI agents work together will be able to scale faster, move with greater agility and create value in new ways, said Ms Yeo. Microsoft's Work Trend Index report published in April found that 82 per cent of business leaders intend to deploy AI agents to scale workforce capacity in the next 12 to 18 months. 'The combination of support now available to local businesses through the Government's ECI and Microsoft's new Agentic AI Accelerator will drive innovation and position Singapore to lead with AI,' said Ms Yeo. Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry Low Yen Ling, the guest of honour at the event, said that as Singapore supports companies in developing cutting-edge AI tools, it has to ensure people are well-equipped to take on the opportunities. She commended Microsoft for its role in developing AI talent in Singapore, as the company has collaborated with SkillsFuture Singapore to help small and medium-sized enterprises to upskill their workforce in AI. 'For Singapore to thrive in the global economy, we must stay at the forefront of enterprise innovation,' said Ms Low. 'Let us continue to innovate to improve our workplace processes, widen AI technology development and adoption, and upskill our people to remain competitive and resilient. This will allow us to realise the full potential of AI and bring lasting benefits to Singapore.'
