In 2024-25, the number of under-18 hockey players in Minnesota climbed to 49,912. In contrast to Massachusetts, a majority suit up for their local schools — even the skaters headed for the NHL someday.

'It was kind of the event, or two events, of the week,' said Backes. 'When the team played, the student section was typically full. You get the parents, the alumni, all there. For us, being in a smaller town was something you took a lot of pride in, wearing your city and your school's colors.'
Backes represented his country twice in the Olympics. He captained Minnesota State Mankato and carved out a 15-year NHL career.

He still cherishes the days playing for his hometown.
'I've got a lot of good memories from playing high school hockey,' said Backes. 'I grew up in the same town, played with the same group of guys my whole youth, growing up all the way to our senior year. And I think just the camaraderie that you have, and then being out in a small town, it kind of felt like it was us against the world.'
'The real reason why there are so many Minnesotans playing college hockey and NHL hockey is the access,' said Mike Snee, the Minnesota Wild's vice president of community relations. 'I don't care how good your coaches are if all of your 5-year-olds choose basketball.'

It is, of course, the 'Land of 10,000 Lakes.' Minnesota's hockey culture thrives thanks to its frosty climate. Anywhere you go, you can skate, so long as the weather complies.
Of the 201 ice rinks in the state, all but two are owned by a municipality — a stark contrast from Massachusetts, where just 68 of 148 rinks are publicly owned.
Minnesota's communities invest in their own using hockey. In Massachusetts, parents aren't just hockey moms and dads. They're customers in the business of hockey, forking over dizzying sums of money to keep their children on the ice. It's now a white-collar sport, through and through.

'Massachusetts is a cautionary tale,' said Snee. 'Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the culture of how hockey was delivered to players and families changed. The outcome has not been good. Shame on us if we don't learn from what happened in Massachusetts.'
Hockey rinks are revered as community outposts in Minnesota. The local barns are treated just like a pool, a playground, or a park.
'The way that a kid in Minnesota plays hockey is the way that a kid in the country plays football anywhere,' said Snee.
Whomever controls the rink controls the sport. If towns own the rink, costs are kept as low as possible. Roseau Memorial Arena, 10 miles from the US-Canada border, has a sheet of ice that's open 24 hours. The only requirement is for the last person out to turn off the lights.
Mike MacMillan, the USA Hockey national coach-in-chief, said Massachusetts is 'in a lot of trouble.'

Is it reversible?
'I think yes,' MacMillan said. 'You need to go back to building rinks.'
New England boasts a plethora of prep schools armed with limitless resources, strong academics, and glistening facilities. The possibility of playing at one of these institutions can lure players from their hometown, but that isn't as much of an issue in Minnesota. The prep-school push, plus the grind to get on the ice anywhere you can, has shifted the balance in favor of private rink owners in the Bay State.
'The pressures, for private, seem to have infiltrated their way into Massachusetts hockey faster than they have for Minnesota hockey,' said Bentley coach Andy Jones.
Minnesota and Massachusetts used to be an arms race, the two best hockey states in a constant competition. Now?
'It's Minnesota and everyone else,' said Falmouth coach Paul Moore.
In 2004-05, Minnesota outnumbered Massachusetts in Division 1 hockey players, 205-149. In the 2024-25 season, Minnesota boasts a 261-113 advantage.
'The entrepreneurs stole our game,' Moore said, 'and we've got to fight back on it.'
In Minnesota, the community model creates high-caliber players — and even better memories.
'It's got its place in my heart,' said Backes. 'At the time, that was as big as it got, and I was doing it to my fullest, and felt like that was the pinnacle.'

NHL And Serie A Team Up For Milestone Winter Olympics Partnership

Soccer and ice hockey, two sports staged in rectangular arenas with outfielders, goalkeepers, and not much else in common. Until today. Just months before the Olympic Winter Games get underway in Milano Cortina, for the first time ever, a North American sports league and a European soccer league unite for a common cause - reaching new frontiers. With an eye on expanding its presence into foreign markets, Serie A has announced a partnership with the National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA), with marquee events scheduled throughout mid-August in Milan and its surrounding areas. Top NHL players are not only invited to the training grounds of Italy's most prestigious soccer clubs, they will also attend official Serie matches at the Stadio San Siro, where AC Milan host newly-promoted side Cremonese and Inter Milan take on Torino on match day Inter Milan players and staff parade on buses to celebrate the 'scudetto' after the Italian Serie A ... 'As a global sport with players from 21 countries, the NHL is thrilled to collaborate with Lega Serie A to create unique content that celebrates the intersection of hockey and soccer,' explains Wachtel. Current and former Serie A players will strive to promote Italian culture as they team up with some of the NHL's biggest stars to create a unique brand of content, highlighting the connections between the two sports. 'With the Winter Olympics on the horizon, Milan will serve as a focal point for sports fans around the world, so we are delighted to take the opportunity to promote our top hockey players in the environment of the biggest sport in Italy,' Wachtel added. (Photo by) Despite the unwavering support for winter sports in Italy, soccer remains the country's most popular sport. And with plenty of ice hockey stars scheduled to compete at next February's Winter Olympics (the NHL has confirmed a 19-day break to allow players to represent their countries), the opportunity to cross-promote is too juicy to leave on the table for Mitchell. 'In North America, both soccer and hockey have incredibly dedicated, passionate fan bases,' Mitchell said on Tuesday. 'This collaboration with the NHL and the NHLPA allows us to engage with a global audience in new and exciting ways while celebrating the anticipation surrounding the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.' And the Serie A Managing Director understands the potential upside for the NHL when it comes to targeted expansion. 'Italy has a strong base of hockey fans, especially in the north, and with the 2026 Winter Olympic Games taking place in Milan and Cortina, this is the perfect moment for the NHL to deepen its presence in a growing market.' 'Working with Serie A gives the NHL a credible, built-in platform to reach Italian and European audiences through soccer—the dominant sport in the region. It's a win-win: the NHL gets to expand its footprint in Italy, and we're able to increase the visibility of Serie A to new fans in North America.' (Photo by Daniele Badolato - Juventus FC/Juventus FC via Getty Images) Canadian and American soccer players have gained widespread recognition in Italy over the past few years. Following a stint with Inter, Tajon Buchanan is now linked with a move to Serie B champions Sassuolo, with Les Rouges teammate Jonathan David recently making the leap from Lille to Juventus. Meanwhile, the US National Men's Team (USMNT) is well represented, with Timothy Weah and Weston McKennie currently at Juventus. Kristoffer Lund has taken Sicily by storm at Palermo FC, while Gianluca Busio has established himself at Venezia FC. However, visiting NHL players will have the opportunity to see AC Milan's American duo Yunus Musah and Christian Pulisic take to the field on the opening day of the Serie A season. And there are USMNT links dating back beyond Alexi Lalas's spell at Padova. The former defender spent two seasons in Serie A, from 1994 to 1996, just as Serie A legend Marco Materazzi's career was taking off at Perugia. Andrea Pirlo, Mika Zibanejad and Marco Materazzi pictured at Madison Square Garden, home of the New ... More York Rangers (March 2025). Now an acting Serie A Ambassador, Materazzi is again expected to feature in more NHL-Serie A content after his collaboration with New York Rangers' center Mika Zibanejad and former New York City FC midfielder Andrea Pirlo at Madison Square Garden in March. 'By bringing Lega Serie A legends and NHL stars together, we aim to create a synergy that showcases the best of each league, creating an unforgettable experience for fans on both sides of the Atlantic,' Mitchell added. Of course, more of the same can be expected at the opening ceremony in February, which will take place at the San Siro. Indeed, an event of such magnitude takes precedence over all others, with both Inter and AC Milan forced to play their Serie A home matches elsewhere. With that in mind, Lega Serie A has proposed another history-making event: playing the first-ever European soccer league match on foreign soil, in Australia, with AC Milan set to play Como 1907 in Perth. Engaging new fans appears to be an important part of Serie A's global push forward, and their NHL partnership could only be the beginning. 'We are always seeking collaboration opportunities with other sports teams and federations that have an organic tie-in to our work at Serie A in the U.S. and Canada,' Mitchell continued. 'We've seen how powerful it can be when two passionate fan bases are united by shared values of tradition, sporting excellence, and authenticity. We're open to partnerships that help us tell the story of Serie A in a way that resonates with North American audiences, and the NHL collaboration is a great example of how a smart, culturally aligned partnership can elevate both brands.

How Far Can the Devils Go with this Projected Lineup?

The NHL has released the New Jersey Devils' projected lineup for the 2025-26 season: Projected Lineup: Ondrej Palat – Jack Hughes – Jesper Bratt Timo Meier – Nico Hischier – Stefan Noesen Arseni Gritsyuk – Dawson Mercer – Connor Brown Advertisement Paul Cotter – Cody Glass – Evgenii Dadonov Brenden Dillon – Dougie Hamilton Luke Hughes – Brett Pesce Jonas Siegenthaler – Simon Nemec Jacob Markstrom Jake Allen The NHL posed the question: How far can the Devils go with this projected lineup? The Devils certainly have the potential to make a deep playoff run; however, their success depends on several key factors. Injuries remain their biggest challenge. Star center Jack Hughes must stay healthy for the entire season if the Devils hope to contend for the Stanley Cup. Hughes has endured two significant shoulder injuries in the last five years, requiring season-ending surgeries in both the 2021-22 and 2024-25 seasons. If Hughes can remain in the lineup this year, the team's Cup chances will increase dramatically. Advertisement Offseason moves have strengthened the roster. The Devils re-signed Jake Allen and Cody Glass, signed Connor Brown and Evgenii Dadonov, and are expected to make one more move before the puck drops on October 9 in Carolina. Their season opener will be a rematch against the team that has eliminated them in each of their last two playoff appearances, the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes are arguably the Devils' second-biggest hurdle, right behind injuries. In 2022-23, Carolina knocked the Devils out in the second round, and in 2024-25, they were eliminated in the first round, both series ending in just five games. The final move will be resigning defenseman Luke Hughes to fill out the Devils' blueline. The blend of veteran leadership and young talent gives the Devils an edge. At the end of last season, Brett Pesce reflected on the team's progress to the media: Advertisement 'I think we are building something here that's pretty special… We have something that most teams don't.' When asked to elaborate, Pesce added: 'Just everything. The guys in the room, the way we blend together, and the personnel.' This strong locker room culture is echoed by Dawson Mercer, who emphasized the team's off-ice chemistry at the end of the season media availability as well: 'Away from the rink, we are a good group of guys,' Mercer said. The Devils aim to push past previous playoff disappointments and make a deeper run this season. Jesper Bratt summed up what needs to change: 'We knew and found the recipe for winning, but we were lacking that consistency.' 2025 WNBA All-Star Game nets second-best TV viewership in event history

The 2025 WNBA All-Star Game was, per ESPN, the most-watched program of any kind on Saturday night, with the event logging one of the best viewership figures in its history. The average viewership on ABC for Team Collier's 151-131 victory over Team Clark came out at 2.2 million, a figure only bested by last year's 3.44 million total. While this year's game couldn't quite match 2024, last year's edition was a battle between the WNBA All-Stars and Team USA just before the start of the 2024 Paris Olympics. It's the second straight year that the All-Star Game has drawn a seven-figure audience, with 2024 the all-time highest total. This year, a new format was in place, with stars Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier — the top two players in fan voting — getting to pick their teams from a pool of players sorted by a weighted tally of fan, media, and player votes. Clark ended up sidelined due to a groin injury, joining Rhyne Howard (leg) and Satou Sabally (ankle) as All-Stars who could not participate. WNBA All-Star Game: How to buy 'Pay Us What You Owe Us" shirts All-Star Weekend included a Skills Challenge and 3-Point Contest on Friday, with viewership for that surpassing all previous editions. Per ESPN, an average of 1.3 million viewers watched Natasha Cloud win the Skills Challenge, while her New York Liberty teammate Sabrina Ionescu won the 3-Point Contest for a second time in three years. The audience average was an 89% increase over 2024, and according to the network it was the most-viewed program in primetime for people under the age of 35.
