NHL And Serie A Team Up For Milestone Winter Olympics Partnership
Just months before the Olympic Winter Games get underway in Milano Cortina, for the first time ever, a North American sports league and a European soccer league unite for a common cause - reaching new frontiers.
With an eye on expanding its presence into foreign markets, Serie A has announced a partnership with the National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA), with marquee events scheduled throughout mid-August in Milan and its surrounding areas.
Top NHL players are not only invited to the training grounds of Italy's most prestigious soccer clubs, they will also attend official Serie matches at the Stadio San Siro, where AC Milan host newly-promoted side Cremonese and Inter Milan take on Torino on match day

The first-of-its-kind collaboration, led by Serie A North America CEO Andy Mitchell and NHL President of Business Keith Wachtel, aims to capture special moments that can be shared with fans of both sports.
'As a global sport with players from 21 countries, the NHL is thrilled to collaborate with Lega Serie A to create unique content that celebrates the intersection of hockey and soccer,' explains Wachtel.
Current and former Serie A players will strive to promote Italian culture as they team up with some of the NHL's biggest stars to create a unique brand of content, highlighting the connections between the two sports.
'With the Winter Olympics on the horizon, Milan will serve as a focal point for sports fans around the world, so we are delighted to take the opportunity to promote our top hockey players in the environment of the biggest sport in Italy,' Wachtel added.

Despite the unwavering support for winter sports in Italy, soccer remains the country's most popular sport. And with plenty of ice hockey stars scheduled to compete at next February's Winter Olympics (the NHL has confirmed a 19-day break to allow players to represent their countries), the opportunity to cross-promote is too juicy to leave on the table for Mitchell.
'In North America, both soccer and hockey have incredibly dedicated, passionate fan bases,' Mitchell said on Tuesday. 'This collaboration with the NHL and the NHLPA allows us to engage with a global audience in new and exciting ways while celebrating the anticipation surrounding the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.'
And the Serie A Managing Director understands the potential upside for the NHL when it comes to targeted expansion.
'Italy has a strong base of hockey fans, especially in the north, and with the 2026 Winter Olympic Games taking place in Milan and Cortina, this is the perfect moment for the NHL to deepen its presence in a growing market.'
'Working with Serie A gives the NHL a credible, built-in platform to reach Italian and European audiences through soccer—the dominant sport in the region. It's a win-win: the NHL gets to expand its footprint in Italy, and we're able to increase the visibility of Serie A to new fans in North America.'

Canadian and American soccer players have gained widespread recognition in Italy over the past few years. Following a stint with Inter, Tajon Buchanan is now linked with a move to Serie B champions Sassuolo, with Les Rouges teammate Jonathan David recently making the leap from Lille to Juventus.
Meanwhile, the US National Men's Team (USMNT) is well represented, with Timothy Weah and Weston McKennie currently at Juventus. Kristoffer Lund has taken Sicily by storm at Palermo FC, while Gianluca Busio has established himself at Venezia FC.
However, visiting NHL players will have the opportunity to see AC Milan's American duo Yunus Musah and Christian Pulisic take to the field on the opening day of the Serie A season.
And there are USMNT links dating back beyond Alexi Lalas's spell at Padova. The former defender spent two seasons in Serie A, from 1994 to 1996, just as Serie A legend Marco Materazzi's career was taking off at Perugia.

Now an acting Serie A Ambassador, Materazzi is again expected to feature in more NHL-Serie A content after his collaboration with New York Rangers' center Mika Zibanejad and former New York City FC midfielder Andrea Pirlo at Madison Square Garden in March.
'By bringing Lega Serie A legends and NHL stars together, we aim to create a synergy that showcases the best of each league, creating an unforgettable experience for fans on both sides of the Atlantic,' Mitchell added.
Of course, more of the same can be expected at the opening ceremony in February, which will take place at the San Siro. Indeed, an event of such magnitude takes precedence over all others, with both Inter and AC Milan forced to play their Serie A home matches elsewhere.
With that in mind, Lega Serie A has proposed another history-making event: playing the first-ever European soccer league match on foreign soil, in Australia, with AC Milan set to play Como 1907 in Perth.
Engaging new fans appears to be an important part of Serie A's global push forward, and their NHL partnership could only be the beginning.
'We are always seeking collaboration opportunities with other sports teams and federations that have an organic tie-in to our work at Serie A in the U.S. and Canada,' Mitchell continued.
'We've seen how powerful it can be when two passionate fan bases are united by shared values of tradition, sporting excellence, and authenticity. We're open to partnerships that help us tell the story of Serie A in a way that resonates with North American audiences, and the NHL collaboration is a great example of how a smart, culturally aligned partnership can elevate both brands.

Keira Walsh wants more protection for players from online abuse
Keira Walsh has called for more protection against online abuse after her England team-mate Jess Carter was the target of racist vitriol on social media at Euro 2025. Carter announced she would be stepping away from the platforms for the remainder of the tournament ahead of England's dramatic 2-1 semi-final comeback against Italy to set up Sunday's final showdown with Spain. Walsh came off social media after the 2019 World Cup, when reading negative comments contributed to the midfielder genuinely entertaining the thought of quitting football. 'I think it's just a personal preference,' said Walsh, who did return to the networks, but has – bar a single post – been inactive on X since 2020. Lately, her Instagram account has solely been comprised of tagged posts by the Lionesses, or her respective current and former clubs Chelsea and Barcelona. 'I haven't had social media for the best part of four or five months, and I feel a lot better most of the time,' said Walsh. 'I don't really know what's going on outside of camp. I think at the time, with what's going on, probably more people have come off it, but I can only speak for myself. 'I think obviously the girls are smart enough to know what they should and shouldn't be looking at, and I'm sure they'll know what is going to put them in a good headspace and what isn't. 'Do I think there's enough protection on social media? No, I don't, but I'm not going to be able to change that. That's not up to me, but I think just in general, people can be more protected on social media, and I think we can do more to stop that from happening.' England defender Lucy Bronze has warned companies that athletes can 'thrive' without their services, but the reality remains that in the women's game – where new Arsenal recruit Olivia Smith just became the first £1 million player – brand-building on social media can be a lucrative tool for players earning nowhere near their male equivalents. Carter's case has now been referred to UK police, and, in a statement released Sunday, Football Association CEO Mark Bullingham vowed his organisation will 'ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice'. One feature of the Online Safety Act, which received royal assent in October 2023, places a greater onus on social media companies to protect users from illegal content. Companies can be fined up to £18 million, or 10 per cent of their global revenue, if they fail to comply with their duties, but Ofcom – which is implementing the act in a phased approach – has only been able to enforce against the Illegal Harms Codes since March 17, 2025. 'I think we would have liked it to have been stronger in some cases,' said Bullingham. 'There's a real risk that if we're not firm in how the act is implemented, it won't be as strong as we hope. 'I think now it's incumbent on Ofcom to make sure they really do bring those responsible for running social media platforms to account and I haven't seen huge progress in the last couple of years. We would like to see it now.' Foreign social media companies operating within the UK are still beholden to the act, but prosecuting individuals living outside the country responsible for abusive content – which is not uncommon – remains a huge hinderance to justice. Bullingham added: 'If you look at the prosecution, obviously we can only work with the UK police, generally. There are, when we work with some of the companies that support us, there are occasions where you can prosecute outside the UK, but it's really hard and generally really expensive.' The FA chief said his organisation has engaged in productive conversations with FIFA and UEFA, encouraging them to put pressure on social media companies to prevent harmful content from appearing in the first place. He added: 'But where there are occasions, make sure we can prosecute. And we do think that people who perpetrate these hate crimes should be prosecuted wherever they are in the world.'

'That happened [on Nov. 30] against Montreal, right when I got called up,' the 22-year-old said Thursday before participating in the Shoulder Check Showcase at Terry Conners Rink in Stamford, Conn. 'Just kind of lingered all year, wore a brace all year. It was good to kind of get that situated. It feels good, it feels strong. So just trying to get it all better, but we feel a lot better now.' Corey Sipkin for New York Post 'It was really just kind of a normal hit, I just went in weird. … It didn't feel great at all,' said Berard, who appeared in 35 games last season with the Rangers. 'I was out for a week or so. But it's one of those things where you're up in the NHL, you work your whole life for it. I felt like I was playing pretty good hockey, too, so you don't want to really lose that. So, just tried to play through it.' As first reported by The Post in May, Berard pulled out of the international tournament at the last minute due to what was described as 'physical limitations' at the time. Berard said he committed, skated once or twice and his shoulder didn't feel great. 'It makes you a little bit jealous, but I know a ton of those guys, a lot of best friends with them. So it was awesome to watch them. … It was deserved. They had a great team. It was a ton of fun to watch them, but it did stink.'

'Medical will take place on Friday as the teenage sensation looked set for a move to Germany before Chelsea hijacked the move.' Derry was linked with Chelsea back in February, and despite his talent didn't break into the first team squad at Crystal Palace. The teenager is also an England under-19 international, and it will be interesting to see what Chelsea's plan for him is given the competition for places in that area of the pitch. Geovany Quenda arriving in 2026 Chelsea obviously see Derry as a top talent, but they also have Geovany Quenda arriving next summer, whilst they have Estevao Willian who's also the same age.
