NHL And Serie A Team Up For Milestone Winter Olympics Partnership

Forbes22-07-2025
Soccer and ice hockey, two sports staged in rectangular arenas with outfielders, goalkeepers, and not much else in common. Until today.
Just months before the Olympic Winter Games get underway in Milano Cortina, for the first time ever, a North American sports league and a European soccer league unite for a common cause - reaching new frontiers.
With an eye on expanding its presence into foreign markets, Serie A has announced a partnership with the National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA), with marquee events scheduled throughout mid-August in Milan and its surrounding areas.
Top NHL players are not only invited to the training grounds of Italy's most prestigious soccer clubs, they will also attend official Serie matches at the Stadio San Siro, where AC Milan host newly-promoted side Cremonese and Inter Milan take on Torino on match day

The first-of-its-kind collaboration, led by Serie A North America CEO Andy Mitchell and NHL President of Business Keith Wachtel, aims to capture special moments that can be shared with fans of both sports.
'As a global sport with players from 21 countries, the NHL is thrilled to collaborate with Lega Serie A to create unique content that celebrates the intersection of hockey and soccer,' explains Wachtel.
Current and former Serie A players will strive to promote Italian culture as they team up with some of the NHL's biggest stars to create a unique brand of content, highlighting the connections between the two sports.
'With the Winter Olympics on the horizon, Milan will serve as a focal point for sports fans around the world, so we are delighted to take the opportunity to promote our top hockey players in the environment of the biggest sport in Italy,' Wachtel added.

Despite the unwavering support for winter sports in Italy, soccer remains the country's most popular sport. And with plenty of ice hockey stars scheduled to compete at next February's Winter Olympics (the NHL has confirmed a 19-day break to allow players to represent their countries), the opportunity to cross-promote is too juicy to leave on the table for Mitchell.
'In North America, both soccer and hockey have incredibly dedicated, passionate fan bases,' Mitchell said on Tuesday. 'This collaboration with the NHL and the NHLPA allows us to engage with a global audience in new and exciting ways while celebrating the anticipation surrounding the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.'
And the Serie A Managing Director understands the potential upside for the NHL when it comes to targeted expansion.
'Italy has a strong base of hockey fans, especially in the north, and with the 2026 Winter Olympic Games taking place in Milan and Cortina, this is the perfect moment for the NHL to deepen its presence in a growing market.'
'Working with Serie A gives the NHL a credible, built-in platform to reach Italian and European audiences through soccer—the dominant sport in the region. It's a win-win: the NHL gets to expand its footprint in Italy, and we're able to increase the visibility of Serie A to new fans in North America.'

Canadian and American soccer players have gained widespread recognition in Italy over the past few years. Following a stint with Inter, Tajon Buchanan is now linked with a move to Serie B champions Sassuolo, with Les Rouges teammate Jonathan David recently making the leap from Lille to Juventus.
Meanwhile, the US National Men's Team (USMNT) is well represented, with Timothy Weah and Weston McKennie currently at Juventus. Kristoffer Lund has taken Sicily by storm at Palermo FC, while Gianluca Busio has established himself at Venezia FC.
However, visiting NHL players will have the opportunity to see AC Milan's American duo Yunus Musah and Christian Pulisic take to the field on the opening day of the Serie A season.
And there are USMNT links dating back beyond Alexi Lalas's spell at Padova. The former defender spent two seasons in Serie A, from 1994 to 1996, just as Serie A legend Marco Materazzi's career was taking off at Perugia.

Now an acting Serie A Ambassador, Materazzi is again expected to feature in more NHL-Serie A content after his collaboration with New York Rangers' center Mika Zibanejad and former New York City FC midfielder Andrea Pirlo at Madison Square Garden in March.
'By bringing Lega Serie A legends and NHL stars together, we aim to create a synergy that showcases the best of each league, creating an unforgettable experience for fans on both sides of the Atlantic,' Mitchell added.
Of course, more of the same can be expected at the opening ceremony in February, which will take place at the San Siro. Indeed, an event of such magnitude takes precedence over all others, with both Inter and AC Milan forced to play their Serie A home matches elsewhere.
With that in mind, Lega Serie A has proposed another history-making event: playing the first-ever European soccer league match on foreign soil, in Australia, with AC Milan set to play Como 1907 in Perth.
Engaging new fans appears to be an important part of Serie A's global push forward, and their NHL partnership could only be the beginning.
'We are always seeking collaboration opportunities with other sports teams and federations that have an organic tie-in to our work at Serie A in the U.S. and Canada,' Mitchell continued.
'We've seen how powerful it can be when two passionate fan bases are united by shared values of tradition, sporting excellence, and authenticity. We're open to partnerships that help us tell the story of Serie A in a way that resonates with North American audiences, and the NHL collaboration is a great example of how a smart, culturally aligned partnership can elevate both brands.

Deossa's agent in Monterrey to negotiate his departure

Nelson Deossa's future remains up in the air, perhaps closer to Europe than to Monterrey... This Sunday it was revealed that the Colombian's agent is in Nuevo León, to discuss the player's departure with the Rayados management, amid growing interest from Real Betis to secure his services. Deossa has a release clause of 20 million dollars, so the 12 million dollars counter-offered by the green and white team are far from the club's expectations. However, it is expected that they can reach an agreement for 15 million dollars. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. Three Teams Who Could Be Interested In Kraken's Jamie Oleksiak

The Seattle Kraken currently roster five left-handed defensemen, creating a logjam on the backend that needs fixing. The odd man out seems to be Jamie Oleksiak. Oleksiak has been with the Kraken since its inaugural season after the Kraken selected him in the expansion draft. Since his arrival, the 32-year-old has played 311 games, scoring 16 goals and 74 points. Throughout his time with the Kraken, Oleksiak has served as a dependable middle-to-bottom-pairing defenseman, but at his current cap hit and age, the safest and most logical trade candidate to clear up space is the 6-foot-7 defenseman. His traits and skill set are highly valued, and the market for him will likely grow if he remains with the team throughout the season. With that being said, it might be in the Kraken's best interest to offload him now, and here are three teams that could be looking to acquire Oleksiak. The Red Wings have been desperately trying to make the playoffs, and after a season where they fell short once again, the pressure is continuing to build. With a roster headlined by Lucas Raymond, Dylan Larkin, Alex DeBrincat, Moritz Serider and veterans like Patrick Kane and John Gibson, the front office is looking for players that will make the Red Wings tougher to play against. Oleksiak would join a blueline filled with towering defensemen, helping the Red Wings follow the trend of tall defensemen. Three Players The Kraken Could Trade Away At The 2026 Trade Deadline It's far too early to predict where the Seattle Kraken will be come March 2026, but most signs point towards the team being out of playoff contention at the time. With a plan of installing younger talent into the lineup, the Kraken will undoubtedly go through stretches of games where the performances are subpar. The Mammoth are in a similar situation to the Red Wings. With young star talent like Logan Cooley, Dylan Guenther, and recently acquired JJ Peterka mixed with Clayton Keller and Mikhail Sergachev, adding an experienced and physical defenseman like Oleksiak could be what helps them get over the edge and into the playoffs. Oleksiak can eat minutes, averaging north of 19 minutes in four of the last five seasons. The Mammoth have been working hard to add big players to their lineup, and Oleksiak could get them over the hump. The Rangers moved Ryan Lindgren, a new Kraken defenseman, at the trade deadline to the Colorado Avalanche. His absence opened up space for the Rangers to chase after Vladislav Gavrikov, who will now serve as Adam Fox's partner. They also traded K'Andre Miller in the offseason, which opens up space for another left-handed defenseman. Oleksiak could slide in nicely in any of the bottom two pairings, reuniting with Will Borgen or next to Braden Schneider. The Rangers had a difficult 2024-25 season but believe they could return to the playoffs next season. Kraken's Jamie Oleksiak Named On Off-Season Trade Board Seattle Kraken defenseman Jamie Oleksiak was named one of the 20 players to watch as a potential trade target this offseason by Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos.

Premier League rivals Arsenal and Tottenham have only ever clashed in the UK. They're about to face off in Asia

UK Asia China Soccer FacebookTweetLink The latest meeting in one of soccer's most heated rivalries will be the first ever to be held overseas, some 6,000 miles from its origin in the United Kingdom. The North London Derby between Premier League teams Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, a matchup stretching back 116 years, will cap off the Hong Kong Football Festival Thursday. The preseason friendly will take place in the city's newly built 50,000-seat Kai Tak Stadium. Attendance is projected to break all-time local soccer records. 'Of course, it's a friendly, but there's more to it,' new Spurs manager Thomas Frank told CNN in an exclusive interview ahead of the match. 'It's a great development for a historic fixture. Of course, traditions are hugely important. But I also think the world is developing, and we want to come out here and embrace our fans. It doesn't get any bigger than playing against Arsenal.' Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who hopes his team's new star signing Viktor Gyökeres will spearhead them to glory this season, told CNN it was 'a brilliant idea to bring all that tradition, history and rivalry to Hong Kong.' While there has been raucous support for both teams during their pre-season tour around Asia, some diehards still grapple with such a sacred derby being sanctioned overseas. The fixture has only been played outside of London once, and never beyond the country's borders. On one hand, it seems inevitable given that sport is seeing unprecedented spending and global commercialization. On the other, preserving footballing heritage is fundamental. 'If I put my London hat on, it's a bit strange,' said Hong Kong-born Myles Pyne, an Arsenal season ticket holder now based in London. 'The derby over the years has seen so many red cards and flashpoints, and players are absolutely pumped up before the game. You're not going to get that same needle. Of all the teams they could have picked for a pre-season game, this one feels like it's ruining the sanctity (of the derby) a little bit.' 'But if I put my Hong Kong hat on, it's awesome,' he said, noting that many fans in the city wouldn't normally 'get the opportunity to see what a North London Derby looks like.' Billy Ip, who runs Hong Kong's Tottenham supporters' club, is similarly torn. 'It's a bit of both – you want to experience the derby in London, and of course some will want to keep it there,' he said. 'But some of us can't afford to travel to London to watch any football match at all, let alone the North London Derby. It's a good chance to experience the vibes of such a high-level match outside of Europe. 'Putting big games on in big cities is a trend to commercialize more. It's part and parcel of the game now.' Adam Ng, of the opposing Arsenal supporters' club, added: 'It's so meaningful to us that they are visiting. This could be once-in-a-lifetime for us overseas supporters.' The attendance record set to tumble on Thursday was set by Liverpool and AC Milan in the same tournament the previous week. Should the event be a hit overall, Australia-based organizer TEG Sport is confident this will only be the start for big-name sports outfits visiting Hong Kong and the wider Asia-Pacific region. 'The clubs were very much the drivers of wanting to come – we just needed that world-class stadium worthy of hosting such a historic match,' Rachael Carroll, its managing director, said. 'I can absolutely say that there are a whole other bunch of clubs around the world – top football clubs – that are watching with interest.'
