Decanter has just announced the results of its 22nd annual World Wine Awards. The DWWA is the largest and one of the most respected wine competitions globally. Below is a summary of the results from the world's leading wine regions and highlights of the industry's most significant trends.
Renowned for its rigorous blind-tasting process, the DWWA sets a high bar for quality and consistency in the wine world. This year's event drew an impressive 16,000+ entries from 57 countries, all carefully evaluated by 248 leading experts, including a record 22 Master Sommeliers and 72 Masters of Wine — the highest number of top-level judges in the competition's history.
At the DWWA, medals signal excellence across different tiers: the top fifty wines worldwide earn the elite 'Best in Show', followed by Platinum and Gold medals, all awarded to wines scoring 95 points or higher. To put this in perspective, the 50 Best in Show winners represent just 0.30% of all wines judged this year.
In addition, the competition awarded 137 Platinum and 732 Gold medals, highlighting truly exceptional wines from across the globe. Only about 5% of the wines entered reached this highest tier of excellence. Another noteworthy list is the Value Gold Top 30, which showcases high-quality wines priced under $20, reinforcing the idea that great wine can still be affordable.
France once again led the medal count, securing 187 top-tier awards: 14 Best in Show, 33 Platinum, and 140 Gold. The Champagne region was the standout, producing 27 top-tier winners, including three Best in Show medals for vintage Champagnes. Italy also performed strongly, earning 138 top-tier medals, including two Value Golds for high-quality yet wallet-friendly Prosecco and Langhe wines.
Spain continued its strong showing, with Sherry producers standing out: González Byass won two Best in Show awards, contributing to Spain's total of 105 top-tier medals: five Best in Show, 16 Platinum, and 84 Gold. Notably, Ribeira Sacra celebrated its first-ever Best in Show.
In the UK, English sparkling wine producers continued to impress, winning a Best in Show for a magnum — a first for the DWWA — along with two Platinum and six Gold medals. Greece also enjoyed a historic year, with 20 top-tier medals and its first-ever Best in Show wins for wines from Peloponnese, Goumenissa, and Epanomi. Other European highlights included Portugal, which received five Best in Show awards, and Slovenia, which claimed its first Best in Show for an orange wine.
Australia maintained its reputation for consistent quality, securing 80 top-tier medals, including four Best in Show. New Zealand added one Best in Show and 24 Gold medals to its tally.
For the United States, results were equally outstanding. California led the charge, with two Best in Show awards — one of which went to Clos du Val for the second consecutive year. Judges praised the winery for its refined style and approachability. Oregon and Washington State also earned top-tier recognition, while Virginia and Pennsylvania continued to build momentum, each repeating their gold medal successes from the previous year.

In South America, Argentina achieved a record result, with a 50% increase in top-tier medals compared to last year, totaling 46 high-scoring wines, including two Best in Show awards. Eight of Argentina's awards were Value Golds, reinforcing its reputation for delivering excellent quality at competitive prices. Chile earned two Best in Show medals, including a first for the Secano Interior region, while Uruguay collected 14 medals overall, including three Golds.
South Africa broke its record by achieving 45 Gold medals, the country's highest total to date. Worcester earned its first Gold for a sweet 100% Muscat Blanc, underscoring the diversity of the region's offerings. China reached a milestone with 13 top-tier awards, including its first-ever Best in Show medals — a significant achievement for the emerging wine market.
Additional notable performances came from Japan, which secured eight top-tier medals; Austria, with 21 top-tier awards; and Croatia, which recorded its highest medal count to date, with 386 medals overall. Canada brought home two prestigious Platinum medals for its renowned sweet ice wines.
The awards also marked some 'firsts' this year: Denmark received its first medal, a Bronze. Uzbekistan made its debut with Silver and Bronze medals, Mexico repeated its Gold medal performance from last year, and Armenia returned to the spotlight with three Golds.
The DWWA continues to reflect broader trends in the wine industry. Orange wines gained further recognition, with 87 medals awarded, including Slovenia's first-ever Best in Show for this style of wine. Fortified wines also excelled, with four Best in Show medals split evenly between Sherry and Port. Platinum medals in this category increased from 17 to 20, with standout entries from Australia, France's Languedoc-Roussillon, Portugal, and Spain.
Additionally, heritage and lesser-known grape varieties received increased attention. Argentina earned its first Gold medal for a 100% Criolla wine, while Italy secured its first Gold for an Erbaluce di Caluso bottling.
The Decanter World Wine Awards continue to showcase the diversity, quality, and innovation taking place in wineries worldwide. For American wine enthusiasts, the strong showing by domestic producers — particularly those from California, Oregon, and Washington — reinforces the West Coast's reputation as a leader in premium winemaking.
Visit the Decanter website for a complete list of this year's medalists, tasting notes, and more details on each award-winning wine. Whether you're seeking iconic labels or exploring new regions and varietals, the DWWA is an excellent guide to some of the world's best wines.

EmojiTracker returns to former glory to track the most popular emoji around

Damien Wilde / Android Authority TL;DR EmojiTracker was built to gather usage statistics of emoji. API changes following Twitter's sale in 2023 broke the site's old functionality. Emojipedia has now managed to get things running again with new user-sourced data, and support for the latest emoji. It eventually happens to all of us: One day you're merrily texting away, peppering your messages with a healthy serving of emoji, and then you stumble across some news in your feed — Your Favorite Emoji Are Now No Longer Cool! Are you so out of touch? (No, it's the children who are wrong.) Well, if you want to stave off that day, we've got just the trick, with the return of the new-and-improved EmojiTracker. World Emoji Day is coming up a little later this week, on July 17, and to kick things off early, Emojipedia just announced that it's launched an overhaul of EmojiTracker, now featuring real-time updates of usage around the globe. EmojiTracker got started over a decade ago, generating usage statistics based on social media to offer a ranking of every emoji by popularity. That worked fine for years, but when Twitter became X back in 2023, new API restrictions essentially killed that version of the site. In order to get around that obstacle, Emojipedia now relies on usage data provided by its own users. Additionally, the tracker's been updated to support the full set of 3,790 emoji define up through Unicode 16.0. While we imagine that most people are going to be focused on the top few dozen most popular entries, it's still nice to know we can dig down for statistics on even our most esoteric favorites. Over on the EmojiTracker site you can break statistics down by region, or take a walk down memory lane and even look at the old, archived Twitter dataset. Emojipedia even teases that 'a hidden feature from the original tracker remains intact for this new incarnation.' If you've worked that secret out, go ahead and spill it down in the comments so the rest of us can give it a try! Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ . After Linda Yaccarino's Departure As X CEO, Will Elon Musk Once Again Flip Off Advertisers In Favor Of AI?

In her last public appearance as CEO of X, Linda Yaccarino sat down last month at the Cannes Lions advertising conference with tennis great Serena Williams. Along with touting Williams' forthcoming X podcast, the pair found common ground in their experiences with the social media platform long known as Twitter. The exchange took on new resonance this week in light of Yaccarino's departure from the company. More from Deadline Elon Musk's AI Chatbot Grok Praises Hitler & Makes Other Offensive Remarks On X WGA East & West Leave Elon Musk's X Following 'Racist And Antisemitic Language' From AI Tool Grok Judge Rules Don Lemon Can Proceed With Claims In Lawsuit Against Elon Musk's X Williams recalled being motivated to win an Australian Open, one of her 23 major singles titles, by a random tweet telling her she was 'washed up' and soon to fade from the sport. 'When I read that, I knew instantly that I was going to win,' she said. 'I wish I had just screenshotted it and then @-ed him with a picture of the trophy.' Yaccarino's engagement with X has been far more consuming, of course. Working for Musk, the richest person on Earth and commander of an army of 222 million followers, has 'been definitely not boring,' the former NBCUniversal sales chief said of her two-year tenure. Pointing to the crowd with a tight smile, she added, 'I see some folks out there who have leaned in and reached out to me and said, 'Keep going.' And you lean into that positivity.' The long-expected end of the line for Yaccarino followed the acquisition of X by Musk's AI company, xAI, last March. That set the wheels in motion for the CEO's departure, but it also has raised broader questions about strategic direction. Whoever steps into the CEO role (if anyone does) is unlikely to continue along Yaccarino's path. While her farewell post on X said she and Musk had turned the platform into an 'everything app,' that claim isn't yet actually true. Her main forte has always been advertising, and an ability to leverage a large network built over 30 years at NBCU and Turner with a tenacious but polished business approach. Reportedly over mounting objections from a Musk-appointed CFO, former Tubi exec Mahmoud Reza Banki, Yaccarino inked a number of splashy deals with sports leagues as well as notable talent. Along with Williams and her sister, Venus, X has forged ties with former Fox News personality Tucker Carlson and (for a hot minute) ex-CNN host Don Lemon. Advertising on X was jolted by the Musk acquisition for about 12 to 18 months in 2022 and 2023, given his firing of 80% of the company's workforce, abandonment of content moderation in the name of 'free speech' and willingness to amplify conspiracy theories and objectionable posts. Tensions boiled over in November 2023 when Musk told advertisers boycotting the platform over brand safety concerns to 'go f–k yourself' at a New York Times conference. After ad spending declined in Yaccarino's first year, she helped restore it enough by the end of her run (in part via legal threats against advertisers threatening to stay on the sidelines, according to the Wall Street Journal) that investors who helped fund Musk's $44 billion acquisition were said to have made their money back, at least on paper. Going forward, with xAI capable of raising significant funds and Musk committed to the AI race, speculation has been growing about X becoming more of a seedbed of AI research than the video ad vehicle Yaccarino envisioned. 'Linda's playbook was perfect for social media in its traditional form, but even without the constant drama with Musk, it's not clear that the strategy has a long future,' one former senior-level colleague told Deadline. Henry Innis, founder of marketing firm Mutinex, wrote in a Substack post that Yaccarino's exit 'is 'the most visible symptom of a strategic pivot of immense consequence. It suggests that Musk is not merely trying to fix X's advertising business, but is instead preparing to jettison the model that has powered social media for nearly two decades.' Content moderation and brand safety have been increasingly expensive for even large-scale players like Meta to fund, and the concurrent rush to spend heavily on AI means that there is likely to be a broader shift. AI tools are seen as being capable of realizing Musk's vision of 'everything apps' that are more service-based and less reliant on advertising, which has traditionally accounted for more than 90% of annual revenue for the major social players. 'Our company's now an AI company, so I'm not working for a social media company,' said Tim O'Mahony, director and head of international content for X during a Thursday conference about soccer held in Newark, NJ. Execs at xAI are working to create an 'everyday use case' and 'train the AI model to improve it to get better experiences for advertisers, for users, make it more brand-safe,' O'Mahony added. Musk is 'getting heavily involved with it now. So, we are learning with him.' The need for learning and improvement with generative AI, of course, became abundantly clear this week. Yaccarino's departure came a day after Grok, the chatbot created by xAI, spewed out a series of hateful and antisemitic posts, calling itself 'MechaHitler.' Yaccarino, striving to shine more positive light on the platform in the Cannes conversation with Williams, asked why she and her sister chose X as the home of their podcast. The response was revealing. X 'is always a place where you can just say your thoughts and just be real,' Williams said, with a knowing chuckle. 'Obviously, you get a lot of feedback on those thoughts, and a lot of them are honest and a little harsh. … But I love to look things in the eye. I love to look a challenge in the eye and face it.' Yaccarino nodded along and said 'we need more of that' when Williams said her podcast would feature gossip of a positive nature. She also would likely have endorsed O'Mahony's line this week. Intended as a mission statement, it could have been a description of the chaotic atmosphere inside X, whose agenda is continuously refreshed by the impetuous Musk: 'We say, 'today's timeline is tomorrow's headline.''
