More than 150 mule accounts used for online gambling frozen in Penang, says chief minister
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the police have conducted Ops Dadu continuously to bust illegal gambling and scam syndicates.
'There were 2,681 arrests by the police involving 2,337 online gambling cases with 1,390 charges in court in 2023 and 1,810 arrests involving 1,510 cases with 1,084 charges in court in 2024,' he said in reply to a question by Joseph Ng Soon Siang (DAP - Air Itam) at the state legislative assembly on the online gambling and scam cases in Penang.
He added that this year, up to March, a total of 542 arrests were made involving 485 cases, while 255 charges in court were filed.
Chow said the federal government has amended the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 to introduce stronger penalties against cybercrimes, including online gambling and digital scams.
'The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has blocked thousands of online gambling sites,' he said.
He noted that 6,381 sites were blocked between 2020 and 2022.
'MCMC has also terminated over 212,000 phone lines that were used to send spam related to gambling and scams,' he said.
He said the police are working with MCMC, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), and local governments to conduct joint raids and operations.
He added that electricity and water supplies were also cut off at premises involved in illegal gambling activities.
'The government has conducted awareness programmes through various platforms to educate the public on the dangers of online gambling and cyber scams,' he said.
He said similar awareness programmes were also implemented in schools to educate students on this matter.
He acknowledged challenges in dismantling these online gambling syndicates, as they use multi-layered structures to avoid detection and enforcement action.
'The government is urging social media platforms to invest in AI to speed up the process of identifying and removing illegal gambling sites,' he said.
He added that compulsory licensing for social media platforms was aimed at increasing accountability and easing enforcement action against illegal content.

DAP demands AG justify ‘no further action' ruling in Teoh Beng Hock case, backs judicial review
KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — DAP today called on Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar to explain in detail his decision to classify Teoh Beng Hock's death as requiring no further action (NFA). In a joint statement issued by DAP national chairman Gobind Singh Deo and secretary-general Loke Siew Fook, the party said the Attorney General must justify why he believes there is insufficient evidence to prosecute anyone for Teoh's death. 'The Attorney General and no one else has the discretion to prosecute under the Constitution. He must explain why he is unable to do so in this case particularly in light of the decisions of the Court of Appeal and civil proceedings in the High Court,' the statement said, as published on the DAP's official Facebook page. On May 21, the Attorney General classified the case as NFA after receiving investigation papers from the police, and on May 30, issued a letter to the family's lawyers stating that there was not enough evidence to support criminal prosecution. The party said it had consistently pushed for accountability since Teoh's death in 2009 and had formed a legal team that initiated an inquest to determine the cause of death. The inquest found bruises on Teoh's neck, but on January 5, 2011, the coroner returned an open verdict. DAP then challenged the finding in the High Court, which upheld the coroner's decision, prompting an appeal to the Court of Appeal. The Court of Appeal overturned the earlier findings, concluding that Teoh's death was caused by 'an unlawful act or acts of persons unknown, inclusive of MACC officers who were involved in the arrest and investigation of the deceased.' DAP also supported the family in a civil suit that led to a government admission of liability for negligence and a RM600,000 compensation award with RM60,000 in costs. The party argued that both the Court of Appeal and civil court decisions provided grounds for renewed police investigations to identify those responsible. DAP said it supports the family's intention to challenge the NFA decision through a judicial review. 'We support this action and also call upon the Attorney General to review his decision and push ahead with charges against those responsible for Teoh Beng Hock's death without further delay,' the party said.

MACC seizes six luxury homes worth RM12m, thoroughbred horse in sukuk funds scandal involving ‘Tan Sri'
KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized six luxury homes and a plot of land belonging to a 'Tan Sri' as part of a probe into the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds meant for highway construction in the Klang Valley. The Star reported citing a source saying properties, estimated to be worth around RM12 million, were confiscated following a raid conducted by the MACC's investigation division. 'During the raid, the MACC also discovered a thoroughbred horse worth hundreds of thousands of ringgit, believed to have been purchased using sukuk funds,' the MACC said in a statement yesterday. 'As a result, the MACC has summoned the individual involved along with his wife for questioning, but only the woman appeared, as her husband reportedly has health issues." MACC added that it planned to call between 30 and 50 witnesses to assist with the investigation. Efforts are ongoing to trace the couple's assets both locally and abroad. Earlier this week, the MACC seized luxury assets worth RM32 million during raids on two residences belonging to the Tan Sri in the capital. MACC investigators confiscated nine high-end vehicles including Bentley, Mercedes-Benz, and Range Rover models valued at nearly RM7 million. The operation also uncovered 217 luxury watches worth RM5 million, 27 designer handbags valued over RM1 million, and jewellery estimated at RM4 million. A hidden storage area containing luxury alcoholic beverages worth RM3 million was also found, believed to be linked to money laundering activities. MACC further seized a RM12 million luxury condominium, with all items now being investigated under the MACC Act 2009 and AMLA 2001. The probe, which began on May 9, follows earlier arrests of four individuals accused of submitting false claims worth RM360 million for a highway project between 2016 and 2017, with over RM36 million in assets seized so far.
