Australian Survivor host Jonathan La Paglia 'blindsided' after Channel Ten abruptly axed him from reality series ahead of 14th season

Sky News AU8 hours ago

Australian Survivor host Jonathan La Paglia has said he was "blindsided" after Network 10 axed him from the reality series ahead of its 14th season.
A 10 spokesperson on Monday confirmed the upcoming season of Survivor: Australia V The World will be the last series hosted by La Paglia, who already filmed the show before its premiere in the coming months.
'JLP has brought a unique blend of authority, intelligence and empathy to his role as host of Australian Survivor over the last 10 years," the spokesperson told SkyNews.com.au in a statement.
"Acting as a referee and managing the intense pressure of the game while also acknowledging the human drama unfolding, JLP has been a compelling and memorable figure in the world of Survivor."
'We look forward to JLP hosting the next epic instalment of Survivor: Australia V World coming soon to 10."
The spokesperson on behalf of the network thanked La Paglia for his "outstanding contribution" to hosting the game show since 2016 and wished him "continued success in his acting and presenting career".
'We will be making an announcement shortly about who will take over hosting duties for the 2026 season of Australian Survivor.'
Despite no apparent signs of animosity between the network and La Paglia amid his sudden axing, the TV host appeared to suggest otherwise in a lengthy statement addressing his departure on Instagram.
"Australian Survivor has seen some of the most epic blindsides over the last 10 years, but this one might just be the craziest of them all…because it happened to me," the 55-year-old wrote on Monday.
He further doubled down on his claim 10 brutally surprised him by stripping him of his arguably most recognisable TV role.
"Whoever said a blindside is the most humane way to put someone down is an idiot. It hurts like a bitch!" La Paglia said.
He continued by saying he recently received a "call from the Network thanking me for all my hard work and dedication to the show."
"But for next season, they are 'going in a different direction'," the TV host said of the conversation.
"Ratings had dipped a bit recently, and they wanted to do something drastic to shake things up.
"So, for the first time ever, this is not a tribe swap but a host swap. Yes, you read that right."
Survivor features a group of contestants known as "castaways" living in an isolated outdoor location in Samoa.
Its there they must provide for themselves by gathering food, water, fire, and shelter while competing in challenges for awards and immunity.
The castaways are progressively eliminated by their peers, with the last member crowned Sole Survivor and awarded the grand prize of $500,000.
Former model and Australian Survivor: All-Stars champion David Genant is tipped to replace La Paglia as host, according to Daily Mail Australia on Sunday.
Genant recently won $8.7 million on the US TV game show Deal or No Deal Island and is set to compete in Survivor: Australia V The World.
The new season will mark the TV star's third time on the series, and he has previously hosted popular travel shows Rush and Getaway.
Despite Genant's impressive TV record, a production insider told Daily Mail Australia not everyone is convinced he's La Paglia best replacement.
"He doesn't fit the brief," the insider said.
"He's charismatic, sure - but Survivor needs someone with gravitas.
"David is not Jonathan, and viewers will notice that."
The massive shakeup at 10 comes as Australian Survivor struggles with a rating slump.
The last season, Brains vs. Brawn II, saw viewership dip to 486,000 total overnight viewers, a far cry from the many millions it attracted in its prime.

BBC regrets not stopping Glastonbury live stream

The BBC says it regrets not pulling the live stream of Bob Vylan's Glastonbury performance, and the group's comments were "anti-Semitic" and "utterly unacceptable". "The team were dealing with a live situation but with hindsight we should have pulled the stream during the performance," the BBC said in a statement. "We regret this did not happen." Rapper Bobby Vylan on Saturday UK time led crowds on the festival's West Holts Stage in chants of "Free, free Palestine" and "Death, death to the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)". Following the performance, Prime Minister Keir Starmer criticised the chants as "appalling hate speech" and broadcasting regulator Ofcom said it is "very concerned" about the live stream. The BBC, which issued a warning on screen during the live stream, called Bobby Vylan's comments "deeply offensive". "The BBC respects freedom of expression but stands firmly against incitement to violence," its statement said, adding that it would look at its guidance around live events. Ofcom said in its statement that the BBC "clearly has questions to answer", adding: "We have been speaking to the BBC over the weekend and we are obtaining further information as a matter of urgency, including what procedures were in place to ensure compliance with its own editorial guidelines." The UK rap punk duo has released four albums addressing issues to do with racism, masculinity and class. Bobby Vylan's real name is Pascal Robinson-Foster, 34, according to reports. "Teaching our children to speak up for the change they want and need is the only way that we make this world a better place," he said in a statement posted to Instagram. "As we grow older and our fire starts to possibly dim under the suffocation of adult life and all its responsibilities, it is incredibly important that we encourage and inspire future generations to pick up the torch that was passed to us." ‘Temu ACA': 10 News+ roasted by viewers

Don't miss out on the headlines from TV. Followed categories will be added to My News. Channel 10's replacement for The Project has been roasted by viewers during its debut episode on Monday. Despite Network 10 bagging an interview with the Prime Minister in a bid to win viewers over, it seems the new show has fallen flat with those watching at home. As it aired on Monday night, many took to X to share their views on The Project's replacement, and sadly for Network 10, most opinions appeared overwhelmingly negative, with some labelling 10 News+ a knockoff of rival network shows like A Current Affair. 'Anyone else bored so far? #10newsplus,' tweeted one viewer, with another agreeing: 'Same. Disappointing.' Television journalist Denham Hitchcock and his former Seven Network colleague Amelia Brace interviewed the Prime Minister on Monday. Picture: 10 'You replaced the project with a Temu ACA not seeing @theprojecttv is incredibly depressing. 10news+ sucks!' remarked a third viewer. Another complained about the format of the new show, tweeting: 'Please no more long investigation reports it's 6pm!' 'This is proper @Channel7 style commercial JUNK. It's like watching a cross between Fox News and Anchorman. Why the silly news voices!? questioned another disgruntled viewer. 'This is like ACA. Going to peoples houses to talk & them avoiding the cameras. Lots of nodding,' commented another viewer. One however, praised the show's lead story on convicted drug smuggler Debbie Voulgaris, who gave an exclusive interview from a Taiwan prison. 'Loving 10 news +, strong launch story. Is this the new Schapelle Corby story we all need to know about. 10 news should be very proud,' they wrote. The show's interview with the Prime Minister also sparked some viewer backlash, with journalists Denham Hitchcock and Amelia Brace being called out for their interviewing techniques, which saw the PM interrupted multiple times. Viewers complained that the hosts interrupted the PM during the brief interview. Picture: 10 'Some ridiculous questions and hectoring tone from both hosts in this very disappointing interview with the PM,' ranted one. 'You replaced #theprojecttv for this tabloid junk??I'm turning this off!' complained another. 'This is trash, so dry and bland. Time for the project 2.0 and a game show in a prime time slot up against Home and Away. Good luck!' tweeted a third unimpressed viewer. While a fourth added: Oh dear. I thought I would give 10 News Plus a go. I feel like we have regressed 20 years! An inauthentic painfully choreographed attempt at current affairs!' Meanwhile, it was an emotional final episode of The Project on Channel 10 on Friday after over 16 years on-screen with surprise appearances from Carrie Bickmore and Lisa Wilkinson. Regular hosts Waleed Aly, Sarah Harris, Sam Taunton and Georgie Tunny bid farewell to viewers during an emotional final episode. 'I can't actually look at you all, I'm so sorry, because you've just been an absolute dream to work with,' said Tunny as she broke down. 'There can be a lot said about the media industry and it's cat fights and all of this, but this has been a family from the beginning and I know that you'll still in my life.'
