Enforcement agencies alarmed by rising drugs seizure from students in Kerala
According to data from the Education Department, eight such cases were reported in Ernakulam in 2024–25, involving substances such as drugs, liquor, cigarettes and chewing tobacco. In comparison, the district reported only four such cases in 2023–24. Across the state, a total of 16 drug-related cases involving students were recorded last academic year. After Ernakulam, Kottayam reported four cases, Alappuzha two, and Idukki and Thrissur one each.
The Excise Department is working closely with schools to prevent drug use and trafficking within educational institutions. 'Schools have been instructed to report any such incidents immediately. If drugs or tobacco products are found in a student's possession, we launch a detailed investigation to trace the source,' an Excise officer said. 'It is illegal to sell tobacco products to minors. We consult with parents and teachers before offering counselling to students under the Vimukthi programme. A large number of students in the district receive de-addiction counselling through this initiative.'

Karnataka anti-corruption body confirms own officials involved in bribery
In a major embarrassment for Karnataka's anti-corruption watchdog, the state Lokayukta has confirmed that two of its own personnel were involved in a bribery and money-laundering racket targeting government officials.A press note issued by the Lokayukta revealed that Srinath Joshi and police constable Ningappa allegedly extorted money from officials in the Excise Department and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the capital city's primary civic authority. The illegal collections were reportedly referred to using the codeword 'KG' to mask the investigation found that Srinath Joshi attempted to convert the bribe money into white money by routing it through cryptocurrency. He allegedly opened 24 crypto accounts, with transactions totalling over Rs 4 crore already traced in 13 of them. The Lokayukta confirmed that the probe is incident reignited concerns about internal corruption within the Lokayukta itself. Earlier, the Lokayukta had formally requested the formation of a dedicated 24-member vigilance unit to monitor its own staff. However, the state government rejected this request at the response to the revelations, the government has now stated it will take steps to reconstitute an internal surveillance mechanism, using staff transferred earlier from the Anti-Corruption Bureau to the Lokayukta.- Ends

Illicit liquor valued at over Rs 12L destroyed in Indore
Indore: Indore Excise Department on Thursday destroyed bulk liquor valued at Rs 12.82 lakh, which was deemed unfit for consumption. "The action to destroy the illicit liquor was taken on the orders of Indore Collector Asheesh Singh and under the supervision of assistant excise commissioner Abhishek Tiwari and sub-divisional officer Abhijeet Srivastava," the excise officials said. They added that at Mount Brewery Limited in Simrol, 317 cartons of seized liquor, including those involved in ongoing court cases, were systematically destroyed. The total volume of destroyed liquor amounted to 2,853 bulk litres, with an estimated market value of approximately Rs 12.82 lakh. The destruction process involved crushing the bottles under a road roller. Senior officials said that the liquor found "unfit for human consumption" posed severe and often fatal health risks. This category typically includes contaminated or adulterated alcohol, illicitly brewed alcohol and expired alcohol. Consuming alcohol that is unfit for human consumption can pose the risk of methanol poisoning and even lead to organ damage and deaths. "The destruction of the unsuitable liquor by the Excise Department is a critical measure to prevent these dangerous substances from reaching the market and posing a grave threat to public health," Tiwari said, adding that action against illicit liquor production, sale and transportation will continue in days to come.

Four arrested, nearly 190 kg of ganja seized during crackdown in A.P.
The Andhra Pradesh Prohibition and Excise Department arrested four individuals and seized nearly 190 kg of dry ganja in two major operations over the past two days. These raids are part of an intensified, intelligence-driven enforcement campaign led by Excise Secretary Mukesh Kumar Meena, with close coordination from Commissioner Nishant Kumar and Enforcement Director Rahul Dev Sharma. Mr. Nishant Kumar on Wednesday (July 2) said that in Alluri Sitarama Raju district, the Excise Task Force intercepted a smuggling attempt near Indukurupeta village in Devipatnam mandal. The officials seized 180 kg of dry ganja from an autorickshaw and arrested two suspects—Galla Raviteja and Chella Narasimha Rao alias Chinna—believed to be part of a larger interState network. Mobile phones linked to the operation were also confiscated. In a separate bust in Guntur town, Excise officials apprehended two Telangana natives, Guguloth Yakanna and Bhukya Bharathi, near the Government General Hospital. They were found in possession of 8.76 kg of ganja, allegedly supplied by a Khammam-based dealer named Siva.
