Sabah, Sarawak tapped for large-scale pineapple production
KOTA KINABALU (Aug 2): Sabah and Sarawak have the potential to become major pineapple producers in the future, said Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.
He said efforts are underway to bring both states in line with Johor — currently the top pineapple-producing state in Peninsular Malaysia — through a large-scale commercial initiative.
'In Sabah, a pilot project with the Sabah Land Development Board (SLDB) will begin on a 300-hectare site in Sinua, Sook,' he said, adding that other potential areas include Kota Marudu, Beaufort and several locations along the main road alignment.
'This is just the beginning. There is huge potential to expand, and we've identified thousands of hectares that can be developed,' he said.
The minister also highlighted that the initiative aims to tap not only the domestic market but also the export market, which would boost the added value of agricultural products from both Sabah and Sarawak.
He was speaking to reporters after officiating the soft launch of the 4th World Irrigation Forum at the Sabah International Convention Centre here Saturday.

After concluding his programme in Moscow, His Majesty will travel to Kazan in the Republic of Tatarstan on Aug 8. Tatarstan is one of Russia's autonomous republics, with a Muslim-majority population. In Kazan, Istana Negara said His Majesty will be granted an audience with the Rais (Head) of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, and will tour a helicopter manufacturing and assembly facility.

Proposed EPF policy undermines contributors' right to their retirement funds, says SUPP man

In a statement issued yesterday, the branch's publicity secretary Fang Toung Shyuan acknowledged the government's intent of preventing retirees from misusing their EPF savings and potentially falling into financial hardships. However, he also stressed about the retirement funds rightfully belonging to the contributors. 'EPF savings are the result of a member's lifelong hard work. 'Once they reach retirement age, the funds belong to them, not the EPF. 'Imposing mandatory restrictions on how these savings can be accessed is unjustified,' he said in the statement. Fang called upon the government to respect the voices and feedback of EPF contributors, whose funds had been accumulated over many years of employment. He argued that retirees should not be subjected to a rigid, one-size-fits-all policy, especially when many already had personal retirement plans in place. 'At the very least, members must be free to choose their preferred method of withdrawal,' he said. Fang also expressed concern over recent declines in EPF investment returns, which he warned could lead to public suspicion that the proposed policy served as a means for the government to shift financial risk to the people. He noted that some contributors planned to use their EPF savings to start small businesses, invest, support their children's ventures, or to make home purchases. Furthermore, he cited EPF's data reporting that around 50 per cent of members had less than RM10,000 in their accounts at retirement funds. 'If a monthly disbursement system is enforced, it could mean receiving only a few hundred ringgit per month, which may last just two to three years.' Its vice-president, CS Lim, said the theme park has always prioritised the promotion of local culture through its seasonal celebrations and thematic events. 'Although Legoland Malaysia is an international theme park, we always prioritise celebrating local culture and festivals, through Lego-themed decorations and construction, cultural performances and activities that highlight Malaysian heritage. 'Therefore, ahead of TMJ 2026, we will continue to enrich this cultural touch through seasonal campaigns, special events and strategic collaborations to ensure visitors enjoy a unique experience with Malaysian identity,' he told Bernama.
