Jay Slater sent chilling text to friend just hours before vanishing in Tenerife
Jay Slater sent a cryptic text to a friend while he was "buzzing" and seemingly experiencing "paranoia", according to an investigator.
The 19-year-old teen, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, was holidaying in Tenerife and attended the NRG music festival with friends at the Papagayo nightclub in the resort of Playa de las Americas on June 16 last year. He is believed to have gone to a holiday rental apartment in the early hours of the next morning before vanishing.
He was reported missing on June 18 and his body was found in a ravine by a mountain rescue team from the Spanish Civil Guard near the village of Masca on July 15. A post-mortem found Jay had consumed alcohol and drugs in the hours before he fell down the ravine.
According to former detective Mark Williams-Thomas, Jay wanted to carry on partying even though his friends left, which led him to make the decision to travel far away from his accommodation. An inquest today heard that when the teen said he was going to an Airbnb with new friends Ayub Qassim and Steven Roccas, his friend Brad Hargreaves, who was visiting the Spanish island with Jay and is also known as Bradley Geoghegan, "didn't think anything of it" as the pair were with them "for three days".
Previously, Detective Williams-Thomas said in a podcast: "Jay was still buzzing at 6am from the alcohol and drugs but his friends wanted to go home, so when Qassim told Jay that he could go back to theirs and continue partying he jumped at the chance." He added that at 2.35am, Jay sent a cryptic text to a friend, saying: "They've got a marker on me."
His friend replied to the text at 3am, saying: "You need to go home lad you're off your barnet." Jay then replied by writing: "You think I'm going home you must be disabled." At this stage, the investigator said, Jay "was very heavily under the influence of drink and drugs."
According to Mr Williams-Thomas, it is possible that "some paranoia" was present "because his friends were saying he was not making much sense and being argumentative which was very unlike Jay." He added: "Jay had no official marker on him, and yes he was around people selling drugs and he could have upset people that morning because of his state."
The investigator's comments have resurfaced after Mr Qassim gave evidence to the inquiry today, saying he met Jay and his friends out in Tenerife. He said he had been in a different venue then later met Jay and his friend Bradley getting something to eat after the clubs closed.
Mr Qassim described Jay as: "On a buzz. Chilled, happy. Mingling in'it." He said Jay then asked if he could come back to his and Mr Roccas' apartment. Giving evidence via videolink, Mr Qassim told the hearing: "I did say, 'Bro, oh mate, it's so far away from the strip.' There's nothing happening there other than scenery. I said I would drop him off in the morning. He rolled with us."
The coroner then asked the witness about messages Jay had sent about a watch possibly being stolen. Mr Qassim said while still on the strip before leaving for their apartment he saw what he described as a Romanian "lucky-lucky" man take a watch from another person before trying to sell it to him and Jay. He added: "Jay did not steal no watch. I can say one hundred per cent."
While on the drive to the Airbnb, Jay then posted a message to friends on social media, saying: "Just took a 12k Rolly (Rolex) off some c*** with this Maili (Somalian) kid. Off to get 10 quid (thousand) for it. Off my undies ha, ha, ha." Coroner Dr Adeley asked the witness: "You were not involved in taking a watch?" Mr Qassim replied: "No. And neither was he."
Asked to explain the social media post by Jay, the witness said: "He could be boasting to his friends. He's on a buzz, so maybe it could be that. Sometimes people do exaggerate." The coroner continued: "But so far as you are concerned, none of that is true?"
Mr Qassim said: "No. One hundred per cent. I didn't see a watch. At this point he's just firing off messages." He said when they got to his Airbnb he gave Jay a blanket and pillow and told him he could sleep on the sofa downstairs before going off to his own bed.
He said that from upstairs he could hear Jay moving around and heard the door open. He fell asleep and then was woken by the door buzzing because someone wanted him to move his car, the inquest heard.
Mr Qassim said when he returned to the house, Jay was leaving and told him: "I'm going to catch a bus." He said: "I went 'bro, there ain't no buses coming here any time soon'."
He said Jay said he had been told there were buses every 10 minutes. He told him that was wrong but Jay left anyway, he said. He added: "At that point I presumed he'd sit at that bus stop and that's it. He's waiting till the first bus comes and he's out of there."

Man Utd transfer suddenly collapsed after negotiations descended into farce
A bizarre sequence of events saw Manchester United miss out on one sought-after transfer target after 'impostors' attempted to hijack the deal with farcical demands The Ander Herrera transfer saga of 2013 was a unique situation that saw Manchester United miss their target for the strangest of reasons. The Red Devils were known to be in pursuit of the former Spain midfielder when three agents sought to hijack the transfer. David Moyes, who was United manager at the time, said the deal collapsed due to Athletic Bilbao 's extortionate demands over the fee. However, fans could hardly believe their eyes when reports emerged suggesting the move was actually off because 'impostors' claiming to act on United's behalf had arrived at Athletic's offices offering to pay his buyout clause on deadline day. The details were like something out of a Hollywood script rather than transfer negotiations. So many will have been even more shocked to hear Herrera himself confirm that truly was the reason his move to Old Trafford never materialised 12 years ago. "I didn't even know them," the 35-year-old said on the UTD Podcast in 2022. "I know my lawyers and I know my agent. It is the same agent as when I was 18. They [hoaxers] were trying to make easy money – I don't know how. "I think they wanted to be there if the negotiation was successful, they wanted everyone to think that they were the ones who did it and, maybe after that, they can have more players or more negotiations. "But I didn't even know them, honestly. It was funny because some of my friends say, 'Your lawyers are in La Liga and they are going to pay the money,' and I said, 'No, they are not my lawyers. I do not know them.'" La Liga sources appeared eager to downplay the 'impostor' aspect of the storyline at the time, insisting the three lawyers, Rodrigo Garcia Lucas, Alvaro Reig Gurrea and Guillermo Gutierrez, were indeed working for United. Moyes added more intrigue when the Scot admitted that the collapse was due to the club feeling "the buyout was the wrong valuation." After missing out on Herrera, United instead rushed through a £27.5m deadline-day deal for Marouane Fellaini from Everton. The Herrera debacle went down as one of the more obscure transfer failures witnessed in modern times as United endured a slow summer of business under Moyes. There was a sentiment United were under-prepared in navigating the complexities of Spanish football's transfer system at such a late juncture in the window. Lucas, Gurrea and Gutierrez were the same three lawyers responsible for orchestrating Javi Martinez's blockbuster move to Bayern Munich in 2012. However, while that deal had been drawn up over the course of a month, they were attempting to execute Herrera's 2013 transfer in a matter of days (at most). Herrera, now playing for Argentinian giants Boca Juniors, moved to Manchester the following year after Louis van Gaal replaced Moyes at the helm. And United facilitated the move by transferring funds so the midfielder could trigger his own buyout clause. The Basque icon made 189 appearances for United, the same number of outings he managed for Athletic across two separate stints. He won the Europa League, an FA Cup and one League Cup during his time in England before joining Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2019.

Thomas Partey set to join new club two days before appearing in court over rape charges
Thomas Partey is due to pen a two-year deal with Villarreal after seeing his Arsenal contract expire as the Ghanaian also prepares to appear in court after being hit with several charges Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is due to join Villarreal this summer after his contract at the Emirates expired, leaving him free to seek pastures new. The 32-year-old Ghanaian has undergone a medical and is expected to sign a two-year deal with the Spanish club, which will see him play with the Yellow Submarine until 2027. It will mark his return to La Liga having played there during his Atletico Madrid days. Partey was keen to remain in the Champions League and that was a major factor in him choosing Villarreal, who finished fifth in Spain last term. The midfielder had been linked with moves to clubs in Europe and the Middle East throughout the season. The Athletic reported that the ex-Atletico man was in talks over staying at the Emirates but an agreement could not be reached on the terms of a deal despite the two parties trying until late in the day. Partey joined the club from Atletico for £45million back in 2020 and has been part of their rise to title challengers under Mikel Arteta. All in all he made 167 appearances for Arsenal, scoring nine goals, including one in a north London derby win. Shortly after the Ghanaian's Arsenal exit was confirmed he was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. He denies all charges. He had been the subject of an investigation that began in February 2022. He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday August 5. Arteta was asked for his reaction to the news of Partey's charges and said: "The club was very clear in its statement. There are a lot of legal matters that are very complicated so I cannot comment on any of that. Quizzed further on whether he was confident the club has followed the right process he replied: "100%." Arsenal have made several additions in the middle of the pitch with Martin Zubimendi among their key signings. The Spanish midfielder joins from Real Sociedad after being on the club's radar 12 months ago and will assist the likes of Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard. Christian Norgaard has also joined from Brentford with the Dane adding more depth to the team's midfield options. Arteta has also captured more firepower in Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon and Noni Madueke from Chelsea. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. He is also accused of sexually assaulting a third woman. Partey – who denies all the charges – was first arrested in July 2022 but not named while continuing to play for the club as investigations were ongoing. The 23-year-old is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday, August 5. And now the ex-Premier League star is reportedly on the verge of joining Villarreal, according to The Athletic. He has undergone a medical and is expected to sign a two-year deal with the Spanish club until 2027. Partey is a free agent after his Arsenal deal ended on June 30 and was not renewed. The former Atletico Madrid star was in talks over possibly extending his career in North London but an agreement could not be reached. Boss Mikel Arteta said he was '100 per cent' confident that Arsenal followed the correct processes regarding the club's handling of Partey. Defence Lawyer Jenny Wiltshire said: 'Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. "He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation. He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name. "Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, my client is unable to comment further' 2 A probe into the defensive midfielder was launched in February 2022 after officers first received a report of rape. The Crown Prosecution Service said the charge came after it "carefully reviewed a comprehensive file of evidence". Partey remained an important part of Arteta's side during 2024-25, accumulating 52 appearances in all competitions. As well as his usual defensive midfield role, Partey started at right-back during the Gunners' defensive woes last season. He scored nine goals and provided seven assists in 167 appearances since joining in 2020.
