With global sales slumping, Tesla tries to break into a new market

CNN17 hours ago
Tesla has started selling cars in India, the world's most populous country – but at a hefty price tag.
Tesla, which is facing slumping sales and complications from CEO Elon Musk's political entanglements, opened its first showroom in Mumbai on Tuesday. The company needs to boost its sales, and pushing into a new market with untapped buyers could help.
The Tesla web site shows the price of a Model Y at 61,07,190 rupees, or about $71,000. However, the same car is listed on the company's site for US buyers at about $45,000 before applying a $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles (EV), which would lower the cost to $37,500. (That tax credit is due to expire at the end of September.)
Tesla has had a long-stated desire to sell in India, but Indian tariffs on foreign autos, which can more than double the cost of a vehicle there, have been the barrier, according to the World Trade Organization and Tesla executives.
'We've been working on getting into India. India is a very hot market,' said Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja in a call with investors in April. 'It will be a great market to enter because India has a big middle class.'
But he said the tariffs 'create a little bit of tension, which we're trying to work around.'
India is the third largest market for auto sales behind China and the United States. The absence in India has hurt Tesla's global sales, which are suffering the largest sales decline in the company's history in the face of increased competition, and a backlash in some markets to CEO Elon Musk's political activities.
Nearly half of Tesla's sales revenue comes from the United States, while just over 20% comes from China. The other 30% comes from other countries.
The United States and India are involved in trade talks, and President Donald Trump announced two months ago that India had offered to eliminate tariffs on US imports as part of a deal to avoid the administration placing steep tariffs on all Indian exports to the United States. But Indian officials said at that time that there was no preliminary deal in place.
Tesla is not only losing sales to legacy automakers that have increased their EV offerings, but it faces growing competition from Chinese EV makers. In fact, Tesla is poised to lose its title of the world's largest EV maker to Chinese automaker BYD, even though BYD is not able to sell in United States.
The company has been losing some of its sales executives, with the Wall Street Journal reporting Tuesday that Troy Jones, Tesla's vice president of sales and service, has left the company. The report was attributed to people familiar with the matter. Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.
Tesla executives have spoken of a desire to build a plant in India, but at the moment its existing plants in the United States, China and Germany have more capacity than there is demand for its vehicles. Its plans for another plant in Mexico are currently on hold.

Asian stocks firm as investors look to tariff negotiations, earnings

By Ankur Banerjee SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Asian share markets held their ground near a four-year peak on Tuesday, buoyed by Wall Street's closing record high ahead of a slate of corporate earnings while investors took stock of tariff negotiations between the U.S. and its trading partners. The Japanese markets returned to action after a holiday in the previous session following the weekend's election where the ruling coalition suffered a defeat in upper house elections, although Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba vowed to remain in his post. Japanese shares briefly jumped at the open before trading modestly higher, while bonds had a muted reaction as the election results were largely priced in and were not as bad as investors had feared. The yen rallied 1% on Monday, recouping some of the losses from past weeks and was last little changed at 147.46 per dollar on Tuesday. Kristina Clifton, an economist at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, said the weakening of Ishiba's leadership will open the door to more fiscal expansion which is negative for Japanese assets, including the yen. "The bottom line is longer term Japanese government bond yields and JPY can fall if concerns about Japan's fiscal spending deepen." MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan hit its highest level since October 2021 in early Asian hours but was last little changed. The index is up nearly 16% this year. Overnight, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq notched record-high closes on Monday, lifted by Alphabet and other megacaps ahead of a burst of earnings reports this week. Investor focus has been on tariff negotiations ahead of the August 1 deadline with the European Union exploring a broader set of possible countermeasures against the United States as prospects for an acceptable agreement with Washington fade. The most important deals for the global outlook are with the EU and Japan, CBA's Clifton said. "The USD reaction to the announcement of trade deals with these countries would depend on the details of the deals in our view," Clifton said, noting the dollar could turn down again against the euro and the British pound. The euro was steady at $1.1689, after rising 0.5% in the previous session but still away from the near four-year high it touched at the start of the month. The single currency is up 13% this year as investors look for alternatives to U.S. assets bruised by tariff uncertainties. The dollar index measure against six other key currencies was at 97.905. [FRX/] The rumblings around the Federal Reserve's independence and whether U.S. President Donald Trump will fire Fed Chair Jerome Powell have kept investors on tenterhooks in recent weeks. Trump appeared near the point of trying to fire Powell last week, but backed off with a nod to the market disruption that would likely follow. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday said the entire Federal Reserve needed to be examined as an institution and whether it had been successful, further exacerbating worries about the independence of the U.S. central bank. The Fed is widely expected to hold rates steady in its July meeting but might lower rates later in the year. Market focus will be squarely on Powell's speech later on Tuesday for clues about when the Fed might ease policy. Goldman Sachs strategists expect the Fed to deliver three consecutive 25-basis-point cuts starting in September, "provided inflation expectations remain in check amidst worries about Fed independence." In commodities, oil prices edged lower on concerns that the brewing trade war between major crude consumers the U.S. and the European Union will curb fuel demand. Brent crude futures fell 0.35%, to $68.97 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude eased 0.31% to $66.99 per barrel. [O/R] Sign in to access your portfolio

Returns On Capital Signal Difficult Times Ahead For ComfortDelGro (SGX:C52)

What financial metrics can indicate to us that a company is maturing or even in decline? When we see a declining return on capital employed (ROCE) in conjunction with a declining base of capital employed, that's often how a mature business shows signs of aging. Trends like this ultimately mean the business is reducing its investments and also earning less on what it has invested. And from a first read, things don't look too good at ComfortDelGro (SGX:C52), so let's see why. AI is about to change healthcare. These 20 stocks are working on everything from early diagnostics to drug discovery. The best part - they are all under $10bn in marketcap - there is still time to get in early. Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It? Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for ComfortDelGro, this is the formula: Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities) 0.081 = S$318m ÷ (S$5.7b - S$1.8b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024). So, ComfortDelGro has an ROCE of 8.1%. On its own, that's a low figure but it's around the 6.8% average generated by the Transportation industry. See our latest analysis for ComfortDelGro In the above chart we have measured ComfortDelGro's prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you're interested, you can view the analysts predictions in our free analyst report for ComfortDelGro . What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us There is reason to be cautious about ComfortDelGro, given the returns are trending downwards. To be more specific, the ROCE was 10% five years ago, but since then it has dropped noticeably. And on the capital employed front, the business is utilizing roughly the same amount of capital as it was back then. Since returns are falling and the business has the same amount of assets employed, this can suggest it's a mature business that hasn't had much growth in the last five years. If these trends continue, we wouldn't expect ComfortDelGro to turn into a multi-bagger. While on the subject, we noticed that the ratio of current liabilities to total assets has risen to 31%, which has impacted the ROCE. Without this increase, it's likely that ROCE would be even lower than 8.1%. While the ratio isn't currently too high, it's worth keeping an eye on this because if it gets particularly high, the business could then face some new elements of risk. The Bottom Line In the end, the trend of lower returns on the same amount of capital isn't typically an indication that we're looking at a growth stock. Despite the concerning underlying trends, the stock has actually gained 29% over the last five years, so it might be that the investors are expecting the trends to reverse. Either way, we aren't huge fans of the current trends and so with that we think you might find better investments elsewhere. On a final note, we've found 1 warning sign for ComfortDelGro that we think you should be aware of. Kenichiro Tsukuda On ‘Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion' And ‘Astro Boy'

'Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion' is released this September. With Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion out in a few months, I was lucky enough to catch up with the game's producer, Kenichiro Tsukuda, about what we can look forward to. Tsukuda also has a long history with mecha games, having worked on the older Armored Core games and Frame Gride at FromSoftware, also as a producer. I also interviewed Tsukuda for a UK games magazine around the time of Armored Core 3 back in 2002, so it's nice to be able to talk to him again. Considering it's been over two decades since we last talked, I wondered what he'd been up to. 'I moved to a development company called Feelplus, which later merged with Marvelous. During that time, I was involved in the development of various games, including the Fate/Extella series, Bakumatsu Rock, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, the Daemon X Machina series, and other various titles.' 'Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion' is set 300 years after the first game. FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder The mecha in Titanic Scion are also closer in scale to power armor this time around, and Tsukuda was kind enough to explain why. 'As technology advanced, mecha became smaller. Although this is science fiction and a mecha title set in a fictional world, incorporating elements of reality adds depth to that world. Our goal is also to enhance the player's feeling of directly making a difference in the world as the main character. 'With the anime-style mecha that appeared in the previous game, game design can be relatively straightforward because the mecha are only used for battle. However, by scaling down the size of the mecha and making the game open world, we were forced to rethink exploration, missions, and various other elements. And while I'm proud of the unique way our game allows players to move freely between the air and the ground, this increased freedom also required us to design the world with a greater focus on three-dimensionality and spatial awareness than we otherwise would have needed. We encountered various challenges along the way, such as players accidentally accessing areas they shouldn't be able to reach, but the team persevered and successfully resolved these issues. 'As for the bigger mecha seen in the trailers, yes, they will be playable with special controls. In this game, you can summon and use Heavy Armor, which are the previous game's Arsenals, by building up your energy gauge during battle. 'Regarding the controls, we've made it possible to fly more freely in the air by having your Arsenal respond to joystick inputs. Additionally, we've revised the controls to accommodate new mechanics. The basic control scheme hasn't changed significantly, and you can fully customize the key configuration, so players should be able to find a setup that suits them. This change was inspired by a letter we received from a single player. We also enhanced accessibility options in Daemon X Machina to make the game more inclusive.' You now pilot power armor in 'Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion', although bigger mecha are also ... More available. The story for the first Daemon X Machina was certainly one of its weaker points, but it seems things will be different this time around. 'Titanic Scion is set about 300 years after the events of the first game, so similar to how the mecha have gotten smaller over time, we wanted to express how the change in time period would affect clothing and the appearance of people's faces and bodies. I worked together previously with character designer Kimihiko Fujisaka on Bakumatsu Rock. He is well-known for his fantasy work, but his style always incorporates sci-fi elements. I consulted with him about depicting a world that has changed over time, and he agreed to take on the project. While we made many changes from the previous title, I believe Fujisaka's characters have helped bring everything together. 'This time, we set out to make a more accessible story by maintaining the same depth but narrowing the scope. We hold great respect for various works of science fiction, manga, movies, and anime, and I believe our story will resonate with fans of these genres, giving them a lot to think about. Take the robot character Toby, for example, who references the robot Astro Boy. Astro Boy was created by Dr. Tenma after his son died. However, Dr. Tenma's son's name was actually Tobio, and the name Toby was chosen as a tribute to him. Finishing up, I wanted to know what Tsukuda hoped players would enjoy most about the game. 'I would like players to enjoy everything. We designed the gameplay so that players can experience everything. I also want players to jump into online play. Other players can revive you if you fall in battle while playing co-op, so there's nothing to fear.' Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion will be released on September 5 for Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, via Steam. Follow me on X, Facebook and YouTube. I also manage Mecha Damashii and am currently featured in the Giant Robots exhibition currently touring Japan.
