Harshal Patel completes 150 IPL wickets, surpasses Malinga, Bumrah

The Hindu20-05-2025
Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer Harshal Patel completed 150 IPL wickets after returning with a solitary scalp against Lucknow Super Giants on Monday at the Ekana Stadium in the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Like most of the Hyderabad bowlers, Harshal turned out to be expensive. Still, he managed to scythe a scalp to reach the milestone in the fewest deliveries in the cash-rich league's history. Harshal had to wait till the 16th over to get his solitary scalp of the game. On the fourth delivery, he cleaned up Aiden Markram by executing a flawless yorker deprived of pace and ended his swashbuckling exploits at the crease on 61 (38) and returned with figures of 1/49 after bowling a full quota of four overs.
Harshal celebrated his 150th IPL wicket and achieved the feat in 2381 deliveries, the fastest by a player in the tournament's history. The crafty pacer bettered Lasith Malinga's tally of 2444 and surpassed Yuzvendra Chahal (2543), Dwayne Bravo (2656) and Jasprit Bumrah (2832) to script the elusive milestone to his name.
However, the 2021 and 2024 Purple Cap winners' landmark moment was overshadowed by Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram, who went all guns blazing with their swashbuckling display. Marsh drew the first blood and opened his account with a boundary on the first ball of the match by pulling off a flashy upper cut. The hard-hitting opening duo ensured Lucknow remained unscathed as they unleashed a barrage of boundaries to end the powerplay with 69/0. The 115-run opening stand concluded with Harsh Dubey's maiden IPL scalp. The slow left-arm orthodox spinner found the much-needed breakthrough by luring Marsh (65) to slice it straight into the hands of Eshan Malinga.
Nicholas Pooran took the mantle of taking Lucknow past the 200-plus target with his rollicking display. He flaunted his brute force and tormented Hyderabad bowlers at one end. Pooran invited Nitish Kumar Reddy in the final over by smashing the ball into the stands for a towering maximum. But Pooran bit the bullet after Kishan had him run out on 45(26). Akash Deep came in for a one-ball cameo and made the most of it by dispatching the ball past the boundary rope to lift Lucknow to a daunting 205/7.

Were Rohit Sharma And Virat Kohli Forced To Retire From Test Cricket? BCCI Finally Responds

Indian cricket fans were left stunned when two of its modern-day legends — Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli — announced their retirement from Test cricket within a span of five days. With the crucial five-match Test series against England underway, and India still chasing that elusive series win in the UK since 2007, the timing of the announcements raised more than just eyebrows. Social media buzzed with speculation: Were they nudged out? The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has now addressed the swirling controversy head-on. In an exclusive statement to ANI in London, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla categorically denied any allegations that the board or selectors had influenced Rohit or Virat's decision to retire from the longest format. 'We are all feeling the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The decision to retire was made by them. It is BCCI policy to never ask a player to retire. It was entirely their call,' Shukla clarified. This statement comes as a much-needed balm for millions of fans who believed the iconic duo deserved a proper farewell series — perhaps a final tour of England, a place where they both had unfinished business. A Look at the Legends' Final Stretch in Whites Rohit Sharma, 38, signed off from Test cricket with 4301 runs in 67 matches at an average of 40.57. His form in the recent New Zealand home series and the challenging away tour of Australia was far from his best, with mounting pressure and dwindling scores. Ultimately, he made the surprising call to opt out of the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Sydney, signalling the end. Virat Kohli, 36, hung up his red-ball boots after a heartfelt Instagram post. With 9230 runs in 123 Tests, including 30 centuries, Kohli's legacy is secure. His final Test century came in Perth against Australia, but his vulnerabilities outside the off-stump crept back during the Sydney Test, leading to frustration and a symbolic pad-smashing exit. While fans were hoping for one last roar in England, both decided to step aside — a move Shukla insists came from within, not above. Speculation Grows Amid IPL Timing and Selection Rumours The fact that both players announced their retirements during the IPL 2025 season, just before the squad for the England Tests was named, only added fuel to the speculation. Many believed that the newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar may have hinted at a generational shift. Shukla's statement now aims to dispel those theories, reiterating that both legends remain available for ODIs — a format where they are still expected to contribute significantly. India's Young Guns Step Up in England With Kohli, Rohit, and even Ashwin missing from the lineup, few gave Shubman Gill's youthful Indian side a fighting chance in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Yet, the team has defied expectations. Despite trailing 1-2, India has outplayed England in several sessions, including a heart-pounding contest at Lord's where they fell short by just 22 runs. Contributions from Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj have kept India in the hunt, with the fourth Test in Manchester starting July 23. King Charles III even praised the team's resilience during his meeting with the Indian squad at Clarence House. What's Next for Rohit and Kohli? With the Bangladesh tour postponed, the next confirmed international outing for both Rohit and Kohli is the ODI against Australia on October 19. However, Sri Lanka Cricket is reportedly in talks for a white-ball series next month, potentially advancing their return.

R Ashwin Reveals Why Ravindra Jadeja Shouldve Taken More Risk In India's Lord's Test Defeat

In what turned out to be one of the most nail-biting contests of the ongoing India vs England Test series, the Shubman Gill-led Indian side fell heartbreakingly short by 22 runs in the 3rd Test at Lord's. Chasing a modest 193, India's hopes were pinned on a resolute Ravindra Jadeja, who stood tall with an unbeaten 61 off 181 balls, even as wickets crumbled around him. The innings, hailed for its patience and poise, also triggered debate over intent and strategy. Adding fuel to the post-match conversation, Ravichandran Ashwin revealed a behind-the-scenes discussion with a 'big cricketer,' both of whom believed Jadeja could have taken 'slightly more risk' to push India over the line. Ashwin's Revelation: The Risk That Wasn't Taken On his YouTube show Ash ki Baat, Ashwin shed light on the tension-filled final day at Lord's. 'I was messaging a big cricketer throughout the match. I won't name him, but both of us felt that Jadeja should have taken a bit more risk, though not recklessly. Hats off to the way he played, showing Gen Z that Test cricket still demands patience,' Ashwin said. With India reeling at 81/6, Jadeja's knock alongside the tail – Nitish Reddy, Bumrah, and Siraj – almost pulled off the improbable. But according to Ashwin, the approach against young England spinner Shoaib Bashir could have been tweaked. 'He [Jadeja] could have picked one moment with Siraj and asked him to attack Bashir. Siraj can hit a spinner to the leg side with the slope. That might have changed things.' Kumble Draws Parallels to 1999 Chennai Test Legendary India captain Anil Kumble, speaking on JioHotstar, echoed Ashwin's sentiments. He recalled India's narrow 12-run loss to Pakistan in 1999 at Chennai – another agonizing defeat where the finish line was in sight but just out of reach. 'It reminded me of that Test in Chennai. Jadeja was left stranded. He took India so close. But full credit to England – they just didn't let go,' Kumble said. Ben Stokes' Tactical Masterclass One of the most pivotal aspects of the match was Ben Stokes' captaincy. By keeping his fielders spread out and not offering easy singles, he forced Jadeja and the tail to take risks, which they hesitated to do. Ashwin lauded the move, noting, 'Stokes essentially said – 'If you want to chase this with one run an over, go ahead.' That's high-level mind games.' The result? India, despite having the technical edge and player depth, succumbed to pressure – a factor Ashwin believes continues to plague the team in crunch moments. The Bigger Picture: Patience vs. Pressure While many critics pointed fingers at Jadeja's 'slow' knock, others – including Ashwin – defended it, highlighting the unpredictable bounce, disciplined English bowling, and challenging pitch. 'People say he lacked intent. But how many batters have tried to go aerial and walked back? You can't trust the bounce or pace here. All the fielders were deep. What were his options?' Ashwin asked. In the age of T20 muscle and IPL flash, Jadeja's methodical approach reminded purists of the beauty of old-school Test cricket — calculated, calm, and character-driven. What's Next for India in the Series? With England now leading the five-match Test series 2-1, India finds itself at a crossroads. The Lord's loss has exposed familiar scars – middle-order collapses, tail-end indecision, and the inability to close out tight games despite superior skill. But the takeaway remains: this Indian side still fights till the last ball, and players like Jadeja continue to exemplify the heart of Test cricket.
