Manjrekar's Big Comparison For Jasprit Bumrah: 'One Bowler That Comes To Mind...'

Sanjay Manjrekar compared Jasprit Bumrah to Richard Hadlee for their common 'mastery' in their art.
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar praised Jasprit Bumrah for his ability to consistently take wickets whenever he comes into the attack, comparing the Indian pace ace to New Zealand legend Richard Hadlee, the first player to reach 400 Test wickets.
After India was bowled out for 471 in 113 overs, thanks to Shubman Gill's career-best 147 and Rishabh Pant's remarkable 134 – his seventh century in the format – England had to face a threatening Bumrah, who picked up 3-45. However, Ollie Pope and Ben Duckett added 122 runs for the second wicket, bringing some stability to England's innings as they ended the day at 209/3, trailing India by 262 runs.
'We've seen four centuries in the match so far — three from India and one from England — but which bowler has been truly special? For me, it's just Bumrah. The ability to manufacture a wicket every time he came into the attack is what stands out. The one bowler that comes to mind with that kind of impact is Sir Richard Hadlee.
'Hadlee played for a New Zealand team with a relatively weaker attack, but every time he bowled, you felt a wicket was imminent. The common thread between the two is mastery — when I watched Hadlee closely, he seemed like a true master of his trade. I get that same impression with Bumrah," Manjrekar said on JioHotstar.
While Duckett was dismissed for 62, Pope overcame his usual nervous start to score his ninth Test century, featuring 13 fours. Pope had a reprieve on 60 when he tried to steer off Bumrah in the final session, but the Indian ace succeeded when Duckett chopped onto his stumps and fell for 62 off 94 balls.
'With Ollie Pope's hundred, for me, it was also Bumrah in the final over. Just look at this guy — the kind of wicket he took on a pitch like this. We saw during the 2023 Cricket World Cup how he distinguished himself from other fast bowlers, and here he is doing it again. The dismissal came with such ease, and that's something only Bumrah can produce. Ben Stokes does it for England to some degree, but this guy does it consistently," said Manjrekar.
Just before stumps, Bumrah had Harry Brook give a top edge on a pull to mid-wicket but didn't get the wicket as replays showed he had overstepped for the third time in the over. He ended the day with an absolute ripper to surprise Brook with his length and angle.
'In that final over, with Harry Brook trying to survive, what happened was pure drama. We witnessed Bumrah's genius when he got Brook to pull a short ball he hadn't used at all throughout the innings. The setup was brilliant — delivery after delivery outside the off stump — and then came that surprise bouncer. Nowhere in Brook's mind would he have expected it. It came, and he instinctively played the shot," he added.

Shubman Gill, Gautam Gambhir Sent Selection Message For 4th Test: 'Runs Haven't Come...'

Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan gave his take on the team combination conundrum that India has found itself in, courtesy of injuries and lack of form of certain players ahead of the fourth Test against England in Manchester, scheduled to begin on Wednesday. India, trailing 1-2 in the five-match series, is walking through a must-win territory after surrendering a 22-run defeat in the third Test. Karun Nair's place in the XI has been up for debate after his torrid run continued at Lord's. Nair has managed 131 runs at 21.83, while his compatriots have made the art of scoring a walk in the park. Just like Ravichandran Ashwin, Pathan acknowledged Nair hasn't "struggled"; he has batted well, but runs haven't come along for him. Pathan believes if Sai Sudharsan, who was dropped after the series opener, returns to the number three spot, India will benefit from a tactical advantage. He feels England's bowling unit, bereft of experience, has struggled against left-handed batters, which could come in handy for India. While he feels India would benefit from Sai's return, Pathan admitted that persisting with Nair wouldn't be a bad call. "Should India persist with Nair? He has batted well. Runs have not come; the highest has been 40. But he hasn't struggled. But I think Sai should play. The logic behind it is that he has a left-handed batter. I think England haven't bowled well to left-handers. If the team persists with Nair, it wouldn't be a bad call," Pathan said on his YouTube channel. Pathan went on to focus on the third seamer conundrum, which rose from injuries to Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh. Uncapped Anshul Kamboj joined the Indian team in Manchester to add cover in the speedsters department. Discussions and debates have sparked the question of whether India should line up with Kamboj or recall Prasidh Krishna, who sat out in the third Test at Lord's. Prasidh struggled to scalp wickets in the first two Tests, managing six in four innings. Kamboj has thrived in India's domestic circuit with his teasing lines and threatening lengths. He was one of the potential talents who emerged in last season's Ranji Trophy season, scything 34 scalps in six appearances at a staggering average of 13.79. Pathan weighed in on the best option that would perfectly accommodate mainstays Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj and said, "I think Prasidh Krishna should play. When there is an important match, you go for experience." "This is an important match. When Anshul Kamboj plays for India, I have no doubt that he will do well. I like his action and seam position. I think it is better to go for experience," he added. India's squad for the fourth Test: Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC & WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Yadav, Anshul Kamboj.

WCL 2025: Pakistan Champions refuse to share points with Yuvraj Singh's side, says 'India backed out'

World Championship of Legends on Monday informed the England and Wales Cricket Board that they were unable to conduct the match between India and Pakistan and that the Indian team was not at fault, according to an ANI report. Reports suggest players including Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, and Yusuf Pathan decided to pull out following public backlash over the Pahalgam attacks and heightened hostilities in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. While these players did not officially confirm their withdrawal, former India batter Shikhar Dhawan posted a statement on social media sharing an email he had sent to the organisers, informing them of his decision not to participate in the clash against Pakistan. Ahead of the clash on Sunday, WCL released a statement confirming that the IND-PAK fixture had been scrapped and apologised to the Indian public and legends. The ANI report, citing WCL sources, noted that the Pakistan Champions are not willing to share points with their arch-rivals given that the match was called off due to Indian players' unwillingness to participate. 'WCL have conveyed to the England and Wales Cricket Board that they, as organisers, were not able to conduct this match. The India Champions team are not at fault. The Pakistan Champions team are not willing to share points because they are saying that it is India who backed out, not them,' a WCL source was quoted by the agency as saying. Meanwhile, Pakistan Champions owner Kamil Khan recently stated that his team deserves the two points for the clash. 'All the remaining matches are taking place. The tournament is going on as per schedule, and there are no changes. As for the semifinals and final, we're currently saying that if we make it to the semifinals, there will be four teams, and we will avoid matches between the two teams,' he told the media. 'If we reach the final, then the decisions regarding that will be made then. And as for this match, the two points will be awarded to us, and we deserve those points as per the rules,' Khan added.

Banned For Spot-Fixing, Brendan Taylor Set To Make International Comeback

Brendan Taylor was banned for three-and-a-half-years for breaching ICC anti-corruption code. Brendan Taylor is reportedly set to make his competitive return during the upcoming Test series between Zimbabwe and New Zealand. Taylor had announced his retirement abruptly in 2021 before being banned for breaching ICC anti-corruption code but was convinced to make a U-turn by Zimbabwe Cricket's MD Givemore Makoni. According to ESPNcricinfo, Taylor is expected to be included in Zimbabwe's Test squad despite not being name initially. 'I still want to play and I believe I could make an impact as a player," Taylor was quoted as saying ESPNcricinfo earlier this year. 'I look at where I'm at physically and mentally and if I didn't feel I could do it, I wouldn't bother. Givemore has really supported me on this. He sort of shut down the coaching role for now and said, 'Can you play and try to push yourself up until the 2027 World Cup?' Granted I'll be 41 then but with sobriety, I'm living my truest form." Why Was Brendan Taylor Banned? In January 2022, the 39-year-old had admitted to drug and alcohol addiction while also revealing he was approached for spot-fixing by an Indian businessman. Taylor had claimed he travelled to India in October 2019 on the invitation of the said businessman on the pretext of sponsorships and the launch of a new T20 competition. 'The following morning, the same men stormed into my hotel room and showed me a video taken of me the night before doing cocaine and told me that if I did not spot fix at international matches for them, the video would be released to the public," Taylor had said in a statement. 'I was cornered. And with 6 of these individuals in my hotel room, I was scared for my own safety. I'd fallen for it. I'd willingly walked into a situation that has changed my life forever. 'I was handed the USD 15,000 but was told this was now a 'deposit' for spot fixing and that an additional USD 20,000 would be paid once the 'job' was complete. I took the money so I could get on a plane and leave India. I felt I had no choice at the time because saying no was clearly not an option. All I knew was I had to get out of there," he added. Taylor also checked into a rehabilitation clinic. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
