France has long had a reputation for doing alcohol very well. Cognac? Legendary. Champagne? Peerless. Wine in general? A national obsession. But whiskey? Until recently, that was more of a side character in the French drinks universe—enjoyed, perhaps, but not often made.
That's changing. Thanks to a growing number of ambitious distillers and an audience eager for homegrown alternatives to Scotch or Irish whiskey, France is becoming a serious player in the global whiskey scene. And yes, the French are doing it their way—with regional ingredients, wine barrel finishes, and a deep respect for terroir.

The French have been drinking whiskey for over a century—largely imports from Scotland, Ireland, and the U.S. But the idea of making whiskey? That took time. For decades, French law and tradition centered around grape-based spirits like Cognac and Armagnac. It wasn't until the late 20th century that whiskey-making in France really took off, with distillers in Brittany and Alsace leading the way.
Why those regions? Because they already had a distilling culture, and—perhaps more importantly—they weren't part of the protected zones for Cognac or Armagnac, giving them more freedom to experiment. Fast forward to today, and France now has over 100 whiskey producers crafting everything from peated single malts to rye whiskeys aged in Sauternes barrels.

Armorik is basically the OG of French whiskey—produced by Warenghem, a family-run distillery that's been making spirits since the 1900s and whiskey since the 1980s. If France had a whiskey hall of fame, this would be the first inductee.
The Armorik Classic Single Malt is aged in French oak and sherry casks, offering notes of malted barley, apple tart, honey, and spice, with just enough oak to keep things grounded. It's warm, inviting, and wonderfully Breton.

Brenne is the whiskey your wine-loving friend will instantly understand. Founded by former ballerina-turned-spirits-entrepreneur Allison Parc, it's distilled in the Cognac region using organic barley, and aged in—wait for it—ex-Cognac barrels.
The result? A fruity, floral whiskey with flavors of banana bread, crème brûlée, dried fig, and baking spice, and a finish that feels like dessert in a glass. If you like your whiskey soft, approachable, and just a little bit flashy, Brenne is your move.

Rozelieures is one of the few French distilleries that grows its own barley, malts it, distills it, and ages it all on-site. Think of it as the farm-to-glass whiskey of France—with volcanic soil thrown in for good measure.
The Origine Collection is lightly peated and aged in ex-Cognac and sherry casks. Expect notes of smoky pear, black tea, citrus peel, and roasted nuts, all tied together by a delicate minerality. If you're into Highland-style Scotch but want to go off-script, this one's a no-brainer.

Bellevoye does things a little differently. Rather than distilling in one region, they source whiskey from three different distilleries in France and blend it—think of it as a curated tasting menu in a bottle. The Rouge expression is finished in ex-Bordeaux wine casks, which gives it a tannic edge and a lovely red fruit core.
You'll find notes of cherry compote, toasted oak, almond skin, and dark chocolate, with a plush, almost chewy finish. If you like whiskey with swagger and structure, this one's for you.

Crafted by a family with deep Cognac roots, Alfred Giraud takes a haute couture approach to whiskey. The Heritage release blends several malt distillates and is aged in a combination of new French oak and Cognac casks.
It's smooth but complex, with flavors of stewed plum, spice cake, roasted hazelnut, and orange peel, and just enough Cognac richness to make you say "Ooh la la." Yes, it's on the pricier side—but very much worth it if you're into layered, luxurious pours.
French whiskey may still be considered 'new,' but it's rooted in deep craft traditions and powered by a seriously creative distilling culture. These aren't Scotch clones—they're expressions of French terroir, barrel aging expertise, and yes, a little Gallic flair.

By Philip Blenkinsop BRUSSELS (Reuters) -European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday the EU had received the "latest U.S. document" for further negotiations on tariffs but did not reveal details of Washington's demands. "All options remain on the table," she told reporters following a EU summit in Brussels. "We are assessing it," von der Leyen said of the U.S. proposal. "Our message today is clear. We are ready for a deal. At the same time, we are preparing for the possibility that no satisfactory agreement is reached." She said that the EU would "defend the European interest as needed." The U.S. Trade Representative's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the latest U.S. proposal. The U.S. and EU have held a number of negotiating sessions in recent weeks, but the Trump administration's attention has shifted to the conflict over Iran's nuclear program and keeping a trade truce with China on track. A July 9 deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump for the EU and other countries to reach a tariff-reducing deal with the U.S. is fast approaching. Under Trump's "reciprocal" tariffs announced in April, the temporary 10% additional duty on EU imports would double to 20% if no deal is reached by the deadline. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said that negotiating deadlines on some countries negotiating in good faith could be extended. European officials are increasingly resigned to a 10% rate on "reciprocal" tariffs being the baseline in any trade deal between the United States and the European Union, sources familiar with the talks have told Reuters. But the EU also is saddled with Trump's 25% tariffs on autos, steel and aluminium and could face additional sectoral duties on semiconductors and pharmaceuticals. Separately, French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday told reporters that France wants a quick and pragmatic trade deal with the U.S., but that his country would not accept terms that were unbalanced. If the U.S. baseline tariff rate of 10% remained in place then Europe's response would have to have an equivalent impact, he added. American businesswoman Michele Kang has taken over as president of seven-time French champion Lyon after John Textor resigned following the club's relegation over financial irregularities. The South Korea-born Kang is also majority owner of the Lyon's women's team — OL Lyonnes — and has been on Lyon's board of directors since 2023. Advertisement Lyon said in a statement that Kang will play an 'active role' in leading the club's appeal against the relegation handed down last Tuesday by the French league's soccer watchdog, known as DNCG. The case is expected to be heard within the next week. That ruling could also decide whether Crystal Palace will be allowed to play in next season's Europa League, which Lyon also qualified for. Textor also held a 43% stake in Palace — which he has agreed to sell to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson — and UEFA has rules against clubs with the same owner playing the same competition. Lyon added that Textor has also resigned from the board of directors. He became Lyon president three years ago, taking over from longstanding incumbent Jean-Michel Aulas, who sold to Textor's Eagle Football Holdings. The 66-year-old Kang will be supported in her role by Michael Gerlinger, the general manager of Eagle Football Holdings. Why did Lyon get relegated? Lyon's run of Ligue 1 titles from 2001-08 made it the powerhouse of French soccer. Since Paris Saint-Germain took over at the top, fortunes have steadily dipped for Lyon. The decision to relegate the club followed an audit of its finances by the DNCG, with Lyon's current debt estimated at 175 million euros ($203 million). The DNCG had already provisionally relegated Lyon to Ligue 2 in November, with the club reporting at the time that it had more than 500 million euros ($581 million) of debt. A transfer ban was also imposed in the January transfer window. Advertisement News of Lyon's relegations was met by dismay from Lyon fans, with one historic supporters group — The Bad Gones — leading calls for Textor's immediate resignation. The club shop was tagged with a blunt message urging him to go. A Champions League finalist five years ago, Lyon narrowly lost to Manchester United in the Europa League quarterfinals this season and missed out on a cash windfall when it failed to qualify for next season's Champions League after finishing sixth in Ligue 1. Three weeks ago, Lyon received a much-needed cash injection by selling coveted playmaker Rayan Cherki to Manchester City for 36 million euros, while high earners like forward Alexandre Lacazette left the club. But it wasn't enough to convince the DNCG that Lyon's books were in order, a task which now falls to Kang. Kang assumed majority ownership of Lyon one year after taking over the Washington Spirit women's team in 2022 when average gates were around 3,000. They are now around 15,000. She also heads Kynisca Sports International, a women-led, multi-team global sports organization. Last November, she pledged $30 million to U.S. Soccer over five years for women and girls — the largest single investment specifically for women's and girl's programs in the federation's history. Advertisement As well as her donation to U.S. Soccer, in August 2024 her Kynisca Sports organization set up a $50-million (£39.2 million) global investment fund to help improve the health and performance of elite female athletes. Lyon's women's team — a record eight-time Champions League winner — will enjoy a new, female-specific training campus when it opens in July 2026. The women's team will also share the Groupama Stadium with the men's side.
