
Mega-colonies of 'SUPER ANTS' are storming through Europe, wiping out power supplies and even roads - and experts warn they're headed for the UK
The species, called Tapinoma magnum, is native to the Mediterranean region – but has swiftly moved further north into France, Germany and Switzerland.
The pest tunnels under roads and bites through electric cables, causing power cuts, internet outages, and thousands of pounds in damage.
Anyone who squashes a T. magnum ant is greeted by the stench of rancid butter, the Sun reports.
So far, there have been no verified records of T. magnum in the UK – but experts say the species could potentially cross the English channel.
'There's always some risk with species like this,' Niall Gallagher, technical manager at British Pest Control Association (BPCA), told MailOnline.
'Like any invasive species, if T. magnum were to establish here, it could become a nuisance.
'They form vast supercolonies, displace native species and can even cause structural issues by excavating under paving.'
T. magnum is native to north African and Mediterranean countries, including Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Spain and Italy.
But in the last few years the species has reached further northwards into France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
According to Mr Gallagher at the BPCA, the ants spread north mainly through horticultural imports – especially potted plants and trees from the Mediterranean.
They have 'remarkable cold tolerance', surviving harsh German winters, and can thrive in disturbed, urban environments – such as patios, pavements and garden centres.
Worryingly, T. magnum forms 'supercolonies' of 20 million ants across 60 acres due to a 'tireless determination to expand', the Sun reports.
When two colonies encounter one another, they merge together 'in alliance' rather than attacking – gradually forming one massive colony with multiple queens.
They build their nests in the ground and as a result displace the earth beneath tarmac – causing roads and pavements to sink.
In the German city of Kehl, the supercolonies led to disruptions to power and internet connections as the insects bit through electric cables.
How to spot Tapinoma magnum
T. magnum look similar to the black garden ant (Lasius niger) but the invasive species is identified by its distinctive procession behaviour.
These ants form conspicuous trails across pavements and up buildings, often in large, coordinated lines.
To the untrained eye, this may look like a very active colony of common ants - but the sheer volume and organised movement can be a telltale sign of T. magnum.
A Kehl playground had to close last summer because the Tapinoma ants had completely tunneled under the entire area, SRF reports.
Meanwhile, in Switzerland, where the species was first discovered in 2018, T. magnum has caused a 'plague' of the beasts in Zurich.
In the nearby Oetwil an der Limmat region, one supercolony infested a potato field the size of about seven football pitches.
A local, Agnes Wirth, told SRF: 'There were so many ants, you couldn't see the floor anymore.'
T. magnum are black in colour, measure an average of 3 mm (0.1-inch), and look very similar to the black garden ant (Lasius niger), according to the BPCA.
Although even experts may struggle to tell the two species apart on appearance alone, T. magnum can be discerned by a distinctive 'procession' behaviour.
A colony of the invasive ants forms conspicuous trails across pavements and up buildings, often in large, coordinated lines.
To the untrained eye, this may look like a very active colony of black garden ant, but the sheer volume and organised movement can be a telltale sign of T. magnum.
If the species were to establish in the UK, pest professionals would likely rely on a combination of bait gels (such as indoxacarb or imidacloprid) and surface treatments, as successfully done in Zurich.
'Individual efforts by homeowners and gardeners can't control an infestation,' said Mr Gallagher.
'Specifically tailored pest control solutions are needed to eradicate a colony.'
Although spread mainly through imported plants, climate change may also be playing a role in helping the ants survive further north than previously possible.
Warmer winters and longer summers in the UK could make colonisation here more likely, just like with several 'alien' species.
'Tapinoma magnum has profound impacts on local communities,' said Ricardo Pereira, biologist at the Natural History Museum Stuttgart.
'With progressive global warming and a warmer spring, more alien species will follow.'

Earthquake strikes one of UK's most popular hiking spots
The UK has been hit by an earthquake amid a wave of seismic activity across the country over recent weeks. A 3.1 magnitude earthquake hit Inchlaggan in the Scottish Highlands on Friday afternoon, the British Geological Survey (BGS) has said. The earthquake struck a depth of 8 kilometres and its impact spanned 24 kilometres, the survey's website shows. There have been more than 100 earthquakes recorded in the UK so far this year with at least nine detected in just one week in July. The past month has seen 18 small earthquakes in and around the British isles, ranging in magnitude from 0.2 to 3.2 on the Richter scale. In one week between 21 July and 27 July, nine earthquakes were recorded by the BGS. This included two 3.2-magnitude earthquakes in the southern North Sea. On 2 July a 2.5-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Knuckles, a small village in Powys, Wales, with a population of around 350. The quake struck 13 kilometres under the ground. Shortly after midnight on Thursday 24 July, two earthquakes struck within just nine minutes of each other in Argyll and Bute, western Scotland. These were recorded at 1.3 and 0.8 respectively. The UK is hit by hundreds of earthquakes every year, experts revealed to The Independent in 2023, as they say the country is 'riddled' with fault lines. The BGS said that as many as 300 earthquakes impact the UK each year, with around a tenth of those being large enough to be felt by people near the epicentre, while the others are detected by sensitive instruments. Sergei Lebedev, Professor of Geophysics at the University of Cambridge, said that a tremor of a magnitude over three is 'fairly common'. He said: 'Above three is not a microearthquake - which are very common - and is felt and can cause minor damage so, of course, is a concern. In fact, earthquakes, in general, are not extraordinary events in this country, Mr Hawthorn added, explaining: 'The fault map of the UK looks insane - we're just riddled with plains of weakness. Geologically speaking, the UK has four or five different land masses, all of which have been squeezed together over many years - so there are faults between the land masses and then there are multiple faults on the land masses themselves.'

We must lead AI revolution or be damned, says Muslim leader
Muslims must take charge of artificial intelligence or 'be damned' as a marginalised community, the head of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) has said in a leaked video. Dr Wajid Akhter, the general secretary of the MCB, said Muslims and their children risked missing the AI revolution in the same way as they had been left behind in the computer and social media revolutions. He added that while Muslims had historically been at the forefront of civilisation and were credited with some of the greatest scientific advances, they had ended up as the butt' of jokes in the modern world after failing to play a part in the latest technological revolutions. 'We already missed the industrial revolution. We missed the computer revolution. We missed the social media revolution. We will be damned and our children will damn us if we miss the AI revolution. We must take a lead,' said Dr Akther. Speaking at the MCB's AI and the Muslim Community conference on July 19, he added: 'AI needs Islam, it needs Muslims to step up.' Scientists 'made fun of' faith at computer launch Dr Akther recalled how at the launch of one of the world's earliest computers, the Mark II , US scientists brought out a prayer mat aligned towards Mecca. 'They were making fun of all religions because they felt that they had now achieved the age of reason and science and technology and we don't need that superstition any more,' he said. 'And so to show that they had achieved mastery over religion, they decided to make fun and they chose our faith. 'How did we go from a people who gave the world the most beautiful buildings, science, technology, medicine, arts to being a joke? 'I'll tell you one thing – the next time that the world is going through a revolution, the next time they go to flip that switch, they will also pull out a prayer mat and they will also line it towards the Qibla [the direction towards Mecca] and they will also pray, but this time, not to make fun of us, they will do so because they are us.' Government eases stance on MCB Dr Akther also told his audience: 'We lost each other. And ever since we lost each other, we've been falling. We've been falling ever since. We are people now who are forced, we are forced by Allah to watch the genocide of our brothers and sisters in Gaza. 'This is a punishment for us if we know it. We are people who are forced to beg the ones who are doing the killing to stop it. We are people who are two billion strong but cannot even get one bottle of water into Gaza.' Dr Akhter said Gaza had 'woken' Muslims up and showed they needed to unite. 'We will continue to fall until the day we realise that only when we are united will we be able to reverse this. Until the day we realise that we need to sacrifice for this unity,' he added. British governments have maintained a policy of 'non-engagement' with the MCB since 2009 based on claims, disputed by the council, that some of its officials have previously made extremist comments. However, Angela Rayner, the Deputy Prime Minister, is drawing up a new official definition of Islamophobia, and last week it emerged the consultation has been thrown open to all groups including the MCB. Earlier this year, Sir Stephen Timms, a minister in the Department for Work and Pensions, was one of four Labour MPs to attend an MCB event.

Shroud of Turin mystery deepens as burial cloth was NEVER laid on Jesus' body but a sculpture, scientists claim
THE mystery surrounding one of the world's most famous religious relics may finally be solved, according to new research. The Shroud of Turin, a length of linen believed to have been used to wrap Jesus after his death on the cross, draws thousands of faithful visitors every year. 4 4 4 The cloth bears the image of a man after Crucifixion, leading believers to claim it was the very shroud that bore Christ's body. Yet it has been the centre of controversy and debate for centuries. Sceptics suggest the shroud is nothing more than a hoax dating to the Middle Ages. But a new study published in the journal Archaeometry seems to have put the debate to rest. Brazilian 3D digital designer Cicero Moraes used digital modelling software to reach his final conclusion. He believes the shroud was never wrapped around Jesus' body, based on a study using 3D imaging tech. "The Shroud's image is more consistent with an artistic low-relief representation than with the direct imprint of a real human body," he wrote. Moraes argues that the imprints on the linen could only have been made by a sculpture, not an actual person's body. For his research, Moraes compared two different digital 3D bodies. One was that of a human body, and the other was a low-relief sculpture. He then used 3D simulation tools to digitally drape a shroud over each of them. Moraes compared both to pictures of the Shroud of Turin. He found that the low-relief sculpture was a worthy match for the centuries-old relic, while the one based on a human was more distorted. This is down to a phenomenon called the Agammemnon Mask Effect - named after a wide death mask found in Greece. The effect sets out that if someone pressed their face against a paper towel, it would be wide and distorted - and would not accurately reflect the individual's features. Moraes told Live Science: "The image on the Shroud of Turin is more consistent with a low-relief matrix. "Such a matrix could have been made of wood, stone or metal and pigmented - or even heated - only in the areas of contact, producing the observed pattern." Accusations that the Turin Shroud is a fake have been around since its first recorded mentions in the 14th century. More recently, carbon dating analysis has placed its likely time of creation somewhere between 1260 and 1390 AD. Moraes thinks it is likely the shroud was made in a funerary context, and is a "masterpiece of Christian art". He wrote that it is "plausible to consider that artists or sculptors with sufficient knowledge could have created such a piece, either through painting or low relief". However, it's unlikely that Moraes' work will being an end to speculation over the shroud's veracity. University of Padua professor Giulio Fanti has claimed in a study that the blood stain patterns offer evidence that the shroud is the real deal, according to the New York Post. 4
