Chef apologises after influencer clash shuts down San Francisco restaurant

Express Tribune5 days ago
San Francisco chef Luke Sung has issued a public apology following a viral incident that led to the closure of Kis Cafe. The controversy erupted after a TikTok influencer, known as @ItsKarlaBB, accused Sung of insulting her during a visit to the restaurant for a planned promotional dinner.
In her emotional video, which has now amassed more than 20 million views, the influencer claimed Sung dismissed her content and mocked her follower count, which stood at 15,000 at the time. She said the chef told her that her audience wasn't the kind of clientele he wanted at his restaurant and suggested they wouldn't be able to afford the food. Since the incident, her follower count has skyrocketed to over 350,000.

its a long video and not something i would normally upload but i feel like i had to talk about this experience. i basically ran out of there but i wish i would've stood up for myself. if you are a micro influencer i know it's easy to feel discouraged at times but don't let anyone make you feel small or unimportant!!

The influencer also said Sung scrolled briefly through her page before declaring that her videos weren't good enough to represent Kis Cafe. He allegedly boasted about his own accolades, mentioning a James Beard award, and brought up his daughter's social media following, saying she had 600,000 followers, far more than Karla. 'He basically told me I wasn't on her level,' she said in the video.
Sung's apology, posted on Kis Cafe's Instagram, admitted that he had been 'condescending, hurtful, and intimidating.' He added that he had apologised privately to Karla before stepping away from the restaurant completely. 'There are no excuses. I've decided to step away from Kis Cafe permanently,' he wrote.
Kis Cafe, which opened just a few months ago, confirmed Sung was no longer associated with the restaurant. On Saturday, it announced its permanent closure, thanking the local community for its support.
Yelp and Google have since been flooded with one-star reviews for both Kis Cafe and Sung's previous restaurant, Isa.

Doechii declares ‘Free Palestine' during Osheaga set, sparking viral reaction

American rapper and singer Doechii made headlines during her performance at the Osheaga Music and Arts Festival in Montréal after voicing support for Palestine onstage. The moment occurred mid-set when she paused to address the crowd, saying, 'Y'all can't be scared to stand up for what you believe in. You can't be scared to say what matters. Free Palestine.' A 19-second clip of the statement quickly circulated across social media platforms, including Reddit, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter), where it drew significant attention. Many commenters expressed support for her message, while others debated the broader implications of entertainers addressing geopolitical issues during performances. This marks one of the first major political statements from Doechii during a live event. Although she has not posted further comments on her own social media channels, the clip has been widely reshared by fan pages and political accounts alike. As of now, no public reaction has been issued by Osheaga organisers or Doechii's representatives. Her remarks come amid heightened global attention on the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Over the past year, artists and public figures have faced growing calls to take positions on the Israel-Palestine conflict, with responses ranging from full-throated support to public neutrality. Reactions have often led to online fallout, professional consequences, or, in some cases, further public discourse. At the time of reporting, Doechii's festival performance has not been removed or altered on any official platforms. Her comment remains available through fan-recorded clips, which continue to generate discussion across music, political, and pop culture communities online.

Reboot without warning? Nancy Meyers blindsided by ‘The Holiday' remake

In a twist as icy as a Christmas heartbreak, writer-director Nancy Meyers was completely blindsided by Apple TV+'s new limited series reboot of The Holiday. The romantic comedy, a fan-favourite since its 2006 release, is reportedly being reimagined as a series but the woman behind its charm and enduring legacy was left out of the loop entirely. 'News to me. Imagine my surprise when I opened Instagram and this was the first post I saw,' Meyers commented on social media, complete with a telling side-eye emoji. Her reaction, which has since gone viral, ignited instant backlash across Reddit, Instagram, and X, where fans expressed disbelief that the original creator was not even consulted. Fans and industry watchers alike are calling out Apple TV+ for what many see as a blatant cash grab. 'No Nancy? So, the set design is going to be hideous at minimum,' one user wrote. Others noted how the absence of Meyers could strip the project of its distinct warmth and charm. Adding fuel to the fire, many are questioning the legality and ethics of such a move. Although studios typically own the rights, the optics of erasing a beloved filmmaker from her own legacy have not gone down well. 'She wrote it too!' one Redditor pointed out, while another joked, 'Nancy, get your lawyer girl.' There's no official word from Apple yet, but online sentiment is leaning harshly negative. Meyers, known for her meticulously styled interiors and feel-good scripts, has remained composed, but her subtle jab has left the internet fuming on her behalf. The original cast, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Jack Black, and Kate Winslet, have not commented, but unless the creator's course-correct quickly, this reboot may be dead on arrival.

American Eagle defends Sydney Sweeney campaign amid eugenics accusations

American Eagle has addressed the controversy surrounding its fall 2025 campaign featuring Sydney Sweeney, following widespread online backlash and confusion over the tagline 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.' The viral campaign sparked debate after a clip showed Sweeney saying, 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring… My jeans are blue.' The wordplay between 'genes' and 'jeans' ignited accusations online that the ad promoted a subtle racial message or even eugenics. Critics, particularly on TikTok, claimed the combination of Sweeney's blue eyes, blonde hair, and scripted dialogue made the campaign a 'racialized dog whistle.' In response, American Eagle issued a statement on Instagram: 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way.' While some condemned the campaign as tone-deaf, others defended Sweeney and the brand, dismissing the outrage as overblown. 'Y'all are mad at Sydney Sweeney because she's white, she's blonde, she's blue-eyed and she looks good,' said one TikTok user, capturing the divide in public sentiment. Sweeney has not commented publicly. She continues to dominate Hollywood with roles in Euphoria, The White Lotus, and the upcoming Christy, while also expanding her business ventures. Recent endorsements include Armani Beauty, Miu Miu, and a reported lingerie brand backed by Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez. Baskin-Robbins, one of her brand partners, has since disabled comments on TikTok videos featuring the actress amid the controversy.
