'I Know What You Did Last Summer' stars talk cameos, ending and possible sequel
Spoiler alert! We're discussing the surprise cameos and end-credits scene of the new "I Know What You Did Last Summer." If you haven't seen the film and don't want to be spoiled, stop reading now. Welcome back, Helen Shivers and Karla Wilson. The new "I Know What You Did Last Summer" (in theaters now) is full of big swings and huge surprises, including major cameos from two fan-favorite characters: Sarah Michelle Gellar returns as Helen from the original film, and Brandy returns as Karla from the 1998 sequel. Gellar's appearance comes first, during a creepy dream sequence. While in police custody, Madelyn Cline's Danica Richards has a vision of Helen, who was memorably killed by the Fisherman in the 1997 movie, as a manifestation of her guilt. In the dream, Helen holds a hook and tells Danica that the death of her fiancé Wyatt (Joshua Orpin), the killer's first victim, was her fault. Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox "There was no way that Sarah was going to get out of doing this," director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson quips, and stresses that she and Gellar were telling the truth when they previously declared that Helen is really dead. "None of us lied! Nobody lied!" But for Robinson, bringing Gellar back made sense, given the spiritual link between Helen and Danica. "Danica is kind of the Helen Shivers of this film. So it was very exciting for me and for Sarah to be able to bring those two characters together in this kind of David Lynchian dream sequence, where Sarah could chew scenery and be her most iconic Helen Shivers self," Robinson says. Cline "screamed internally" in excitement when she learned she'd share a scene with Gellar, who was "hilarious" and "kind." She also remembers the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" alum being "so involved" during shooting. "She was there with her kids, and it was a really special experience because you can tell she also deeply cares," Cline adds. "She wanted to be there just as much as we did." The cameo is another big surprise that Freddie Prinze Jr. has been keeping under wraps, the other being his character Ray's heel turn. He says he and Gellar, whom he married in 2002 after they met on the original "I Know What You Did Last Summer," have known she would appear in the film since before the script was completed. "The even cooler secret than Ray being the killer was knowing that the fans were going to get something (with Helen)," he says. What happens in the 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' end-credits scene? The second surprise cameo comes during an end-credits scene, in which Karla (Brandy), Julie James' (Jennifer Love Hewitt) roommate in 1998's "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer," watches a news report about the events of the film in shock. Julie then stops by to reveal that she has received a new threatening note along with a photo of Julie and Karla that has Karla's face crossed out. Julie says she needs help, and Karla says she's in, setting up a sequel that would seemingly involve the two of them teaming up. Hewitt says it was "so special" getting to work with Brandy again for the first time in nearly 30 years. "She and I just kept looking at each other going, 'Is that you? Oh, my God, what are we doing here?' " "Karla, for Julie, is probably the most special person in her life, because she's the one person who is still here (and) knows everything that she's been through, but is also her ride or die," Hewitt adds. "She's not scared of anything. She's probably the one character that matches Julie's gumption." Robinson says she didn't want to bring Karla back just for the sake of a cameo, but she thought it was appropriate that the Fisherman's return would lead the characters to reunite. Julie "has moved through and past her trauma in a way where she doesn't really want to be reminded of it," the director explains. "She is solitary, is a loner, doesn't want to bring anyone into her mess, and that is the life and the world that she's created for herself. So for me, something needed to bring Julie back to Karla, and I really liked that the events of this film push those two friends back together." Will there be an 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' sequel? Despite the end-credits scene directly leading into a sequel, another "I Know What You Did Last Summer" movie hasn't been confirmed. Whether a sequel happens will depend on how well the new film performs. But Robinson says she has a "clear" idea of what that next movie would be and is ready to make it happen, should she be given the opportunity. "Hopefully, that is something that people want," she says. Hewitt, too, confirms she'd like another go as Julie James. "I'm definitely down for it," she says. "That would be so fun, everything working out as it should."

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer' post-credits scene revealed — with a familiar face
Spoilers below. A word that makes 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' fans shudder? 'Still.' The 1998 sequel 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,' starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Brandy Norwood, was ripped by critics and moviegoers at the time for being a low-quality follow-up. 3 A former franchise star makes a surprise appearance during the end credits of the new 'I Know What You Did Last Summer) AP To this day, it's considered several notches below the original. But, in the post-credits sequence of the new 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' in theaters now, one of the stars of 'Still' nonetheless returns to the freaky fold: Brandy's Karla Wilson. The shocker scene begins in a house as a TV shows a news report about the latest round of Fisherman murders in seaside Southport, North Carolina. Then a man appears. 'Isn't that your old college roommate?' he asks as Jennifer Love Hewitt's Julie James pops up onscreen. Dramatically, Brandy enters. 'Yes,' says Karla. 'People are always trying to kill that woman. I hope she's in therapy.' 3 Jennifer Love Hewitt and Brandy Norwood both survived the carnage of 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.' ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection Then the doorbell rings, and Hewitt, who stars in the film alongside Freddie Prinze Jr. as Ray, is standing at the door. 'Julie! Oh my God, it's been years!' Karla says. 'I was watching the news, and you can't catch a damn break!' A stone-faced Julie replies, 'I need your help.' 'Who are we f–king up this time?' asks Brandy, setting up a possible sequel. In 'Still,' Julie and Karla win a radio contest that gets them a free trip to the Bahamas. But the prize is a setup. Ben Willis — aka the Fisherman serial killer — is waiting for them on the island, hook in hand. 3 One of the new stars of 'I Know What You Did Last Sumer' is Chase Sui Wonders. AP In the end, Julie and Karla both survive the Caribbean carnage. 'That was in the contract,' Brandy, 46, told Entertainment Tonight in June. 'Black people don't last in horror films, so I had to put that in the contract.' The new refresh of 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' actually mocks the spotty reputation of 'Still.' When college kid Teddy (Tyriq Withers) suggests his frightened friends just 'f–k off to the Bahamas' to avoid the wrath of the Fisherman, Prinze Jr.'s bar owner Ray glares at him. 'For reasons I cannot get into, I wouldn't do that,' he says.

Duck tale a quacker
The home-made "ducks crossing" sign outside the Newell family home warns neighbours to look out for a visiting mother duck and her seven ducklings. PHOTO: SUPPLIED A wild mother duck and her seven ducklings have become regular visitors to the Newell family home in Sunnyvale, much to the amusement of the neighbourhood and radio listeners across the city. For the past couple of months, The Breeze Dunedin morning radio show co-host Damian Newell has been entertaining locals by regularly sharing photos and videos of the growing duck family online. "We've been having a bit of fun with it by giving our listeners 'duck tales' updates," Mr Newell said. The saga began two years ago, when Damian and Debra Newell's daughter Molly started feeding a pair of wild mallards, dubbed Karla and Valerio, alongside the family's flock of pet Indian Runner ducks. After disappearing for a time, Karla returned about eight weeks ago, waddling up the drive with eight ducklings in tow. Sadly, one duckling was lost early on, but the mother has been able to keep her seven remaining ducklings growing strong — with a little help from the Newells. PHOTO: SUPPLIED Describing the family's tall, flightless Indian Runner ducks as "agents of chaos", Mr Newell said Karla and her brood fitted in with them well, and were making the most of the supplementary food source and a safe back yard to spend time in. "They hang out in our garden for most of the day, before we escort them back to the creek at night," he said. A home-made "ducks crossing" sign helps with safety. While Karla and her ducklings get on well with the Indian Runner ducks, they get bossed around a bit by the family's chooks. However, Mr Newell said everyone seemed reasonably happy with the arrangements, apart from the family dog Bustop, who had found himself at the bottom of the pecking order. "Poor old Bustop, they all pick on him."

Disabled man with able-bodied girlfriend hits out at critics who 'don't understand' their relationship
A disabled man dating an able-bodied woman has hit back at critics who say they 'don't understand' how someone 'like him' got a girlfriend. Angel Martinez, 18, from Kansas City, was born with a condition called arthrogryposis, which causes joint stiffness. The disease has left him wheelchair-bound and unable to do 'basic day-to-day things' like 'using the bathroom, eating, getting dressed, or even getting into bed' without help. He connected with Karla on social media in 2022, and when they met in person for the first time, it was love at first sight. But the couple - who are preparing to get married - has faced scrutiny over their relationship, with critics accusing her of cheating or alleging that his parents 'pay' her to be with him. Now, Angel has spoken exclusively with about the unfair backlash they have received. He said: 'People don't understand how someone like Karla could be with someone like me. At first, that used to bother us. It was tough, especially for Karla. 'It's hard to understand why people judge without knowing us. But over time, we learned to ignore it. 'We realized it says more about them than about us, so we don't let it affect our relationship or how we see ourselves.' Angel admitted that in addition to the online hate, the couple often get 'stares' from people in public when they're out together. He explained that the 'realization' that he will 'always need someone to help take care of him' was hard at first, but he's come to accept it. The teenager said: 'Basically, my condition makes some parts of my body harder to move because my joints are stiff. 'It makes it hard to do basic day to day things that most people don't think twice about like using the bathroom by myself, feeding myself, getting dressed, driving, or even getting into bed. 'It's not easy knowing that level of independence may never fully be there.' He insisted that Karla loves him for his bubbly 'personality' and has never looked at him differently because of his disability. He said: 'Even though I'm in a wheelchair, I've always shown people who I really am. 'I'm outgoing, I joke around, I like making people laugh. My personality plays a big part in how I connect with others. 'Karla actually told me that's why she started liking me in the first place because of how funny and confident I was, and how I didn't let being in a wheelchair stop me from being myself. 'By the time we started getting to know each other, she already knew about my condition but she never made it a big deal. She saw the fun, confident person I am first.' He recalled falling 'in love' with her the moment he laid eyes on her. Angel said: 'There was just something about her energy and the way she carried herself. It felt real from the beginning.' He admitted that he was 'a little nervous' at first to ask Karla to help him with day-to-day activities, but added that she immediately stepped up. The teen said: 'She never hesitated. She never made it feel weird or uncomfortable for me to ask for help. That meant a lot.' Karla told 'I think the only hard part is wishing I could do more for him sometimes. 'But I love Angel for who he is, and I've never made his disability the main focus in our relationship.' In the end, Angel said he hopes that others can learn from their unconventional romance. He said: 'To the haters, or anyone who doesn't understand how someone like me can have a girlfriend while they don't, I want to tell them to use me as an example that anything is possible. 'Instead of being negative or mad that I have a girlfriend, use it as motivation to work on yourself and find your own love.' He continued: 'Know that there is love out there, and there will be someone who loves you for who you are. 'What's been beautiful is how much support we've also gotten especially after sharing our relationship online. 'Now, strangers will come up to us just to say they love how we love each other. That kind of support always outweighs the stares.'
