
2025 Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Motor Electric Ultimate review
The Swedish firm has captured an impressive 50% share of the premium electric SUV market. Granted, that may only be 406 units, but there are plenty of premium marques vying for those few seats. Nevertheless, South Africa's EV mobility landscape continues to be hindered by infrastructural limitations, lack of government incentivisation, sporadic load-shedding and high import duties.
As a result, South Africa's journey toward widescale electric mobility has been cautious at best. Which is why manufacturers themselves have seen fit to improve the value proposition of EVs. For example, with every Volvo C40 Recharge sold, the firm offers a free charging wall box installed free of charge at your home. Nevertheless, when you drive the Volvo C40 Recharge, you still get the sense it's a bridge in Volvo's lineup. It is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The firm has already launched the big-volume EX30 and flagship EX90, both of which we've sampled.
That said, the C40 does little to dissuade you from some impressive performance metrics. The dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain produces 300 kW and 660 Nm of torque. Which is totally nutty in a safe-as-houses Volvo. With characteristic smoothness and silence, the EV propels from zero to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds.
The 78-kWh lithium-ion battery pack offers a claimed range of 510 km (on the WLTP cycle). However, in real-world conditions, you can expect closer to 400 km per charge. And if you struggle to tame stabs with your right foot, expect to see even less. Of course, the Volvo C40 Recharge setup supports DC fast charging (up to 150 kW). But finding such a powerful charger will be difficult in South Africa. Using a standard 11 kW AC wall-box takes about eight hours, which is convenient for overnight charging. Aesthetically, the Volvo C40 Recharge represents a mixed bag of influences. A sloping roofline sacrifices practicality for visual drama. While 'Thor's Hammer' LED headlights look great alongside the smooth, grille-less front facia. And distinctive 20-inch diamond-cut alloys come smeared with low-profile Pirelli tyres.
Inside, the Volvo C40 Recharge focuses on Scandinavian minimalism and recycled textiles. The panoramic glass roof brightens the cabin and offsets any potential claustrophobia from the sloping roof and tall beltline. Rear visibility is certainly compromised by the pinched rear and small rear window. However, this is a common criticism of most coupe-SUVs. Nevertheless, standard cargo capacity is adequate at 413/1 205 litres respectively with the rear seats in place and folded.
By the standards of newer models, the Volvo C40 Recharge has a modest 9-inch portrait touchscreen. And, while comprehensive (it's powered by Google Assistant), the interface feels a little old fashioned. Also, the reliance on the touchscreen for even the most basic of functions might frustrate certain users. However, once on the move, the Volvo C40 Recharge demonstrates all the best attributes of the Volvo driving experience. It's quiet, comfortable and always controlled. The instant torque delivery provides effortless acceleration. And this is wonderful to experience in a vehicle with virtually zero sporting pretensions. There are no drive modes or variable brake regeneration programmes. Just your right foot delivering instant torque as and when you choose.
Of course, safety remains a cornerstone of the Volvo C40 Recharge experience. As a result, the vehicle includes advanced driver aids such as collision avoidance with pedestrian/cyclist detection. As well as lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert with automatic braking. No surprises the Volvo C40 Recharge earns a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating, with particularly impressive scores in adult and child occupant protection.
Priced at R1 324 000, the Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Motor Electric Ultimate positions itself firmly in the premium segment. This may sound like a lot, but don't forget you'll never have to visit a fuel station forecourt ever again. Not to mention the reduced maintenance requirements of an EV with significantly less moving parts.
It's no wonder the 2025 Volvo C40 Recharge emerges as a compelling, if somewhat transitional, product in Volvo's local lineup. Its performance, safety features, and novel design make a strong case for itself in South Africa. However, it does feel something like a bridge between Volvo's ICE past and EX-series future. While excellent in many respects, it lacks the holistic integration and efficiency of the purpose-built EXs. Therefore, we can conclude it succeeds as a logical steppingstone in Volvo's EV evolution – and a practical daily EV – even if you can't help but feeling the next instalment is just over the horizon … Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Motor Electric Ultimate

US economy returns to growth in second quarter on tariff turbulence
The US economy returned to growth in the second quarter, government data showed Wednesday, but analysts flagged distortions from swings in trade flows over President Donald Trump's tariffs. The world's biggest economy expanded by an annual rate of 3.0 percent in the April to June period, beating economists' expectations and reversing a 0.5 percent decline in the first three months of the year, said the Department of Commerce. This swiftly prompted Trump to ramp up pressure for an interest rate cut, saying on social media that Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell "must now lower the rate." Trump's comments come hours before the Fed announces its latest interest rate decision. A consensus forecast by had expected a 2.5 percent GDP growth rate. Second quarter growth "was bolstered by a sharp reversal in trade flows skewed by the tariffs," said Nationwide chief economist Kathy Bostjancic. An underlying GDP measure slowed to "slowed to a sluggish 1.2 percent from 1.9 percent in the first quarter," painting a more accurate picture of economic activity, she added. Real consumer and business spending advanced only moderately, after households brought forward purchases, she said. Businesses meanwhile held off spending on heightened policy uncertainty. At the start of the year, companies rushed to stock up on products to avoid the worst of Trump's threatened tariff hikes -- but the build-up has been unwinding. "The increase in real GDP in the second quarter primarily reflected a decrease in imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP," said the Commerce Department. The uptick also reflected an increase in consumer spending, the report said. The imports surge in the first quarter led to the largest drag on GDP growth from net exports on record, analysts at Goldman Sachs noted recently. Analysts anticipated a bounce back as imports cooled but said this might not be sustainable. Economists have also warned that Trump's tariff hikes could cause an inflation uptick, which in turn stands to erode households' spending power and influence consumption patterns. Since returning to the presidency, Trump has rolled out wave after wave of fresh duties. These included a 10 percent levy on almost all US partners, higher duties on steel, aluminum and auto imports, alongside separate actions against Canada and Mexico, blaming them for illegal immigration and illicit fentanyl flows. Washington separately took aim at the world's number two economy, China, as Beijing pushed back on US tariffs. Both countries ended up imposing tit-for-tat duties on each other's products, reaching triple-digit levels and snarling trade flows before they agreed to temporarily lower levies. After talks in the Swedish capital of Stockholm this week, negotiators signaled there could be an extension of the truce -- although the final call depends on Trump. - Shifting to lower gear - "Beneath the topline figure, the economy is switching to a lower gear but not going in reverse," said Oxford Economics' lead US economist Bernard Yaros. The economy's resilience will allow the Fed to "hold still and assess the unfolding tariff impact on consumer prices before pivoting to interest rates cuts in December," he added. For now, he said that "consumers are slowing their spending but not heading for the bunkers outright." Analysts are monitoring the impact of Trump's tariffs on inflation, with economists expecting to learn more from data in the summer months. All eyes are also on official employment data due Friday, after figures from payroll firm ADP showed Wednesday that private sector hiring beat expectations, increasing by 104,000 jobs in July and indicating a healthy economy. "The consumer is hanging in there, but still on edge until the trade deals are done," said Heather Long, chief economist at the Navy Federal Credit Union. "Meanwhile, business investment tanked in the second quarter. Companies do not want to invest in equipment, buildings or hiring with this much uncertainty," she added. This applies to all variants, including the mild-hybrid B5 and the plug-in hybrid T8 Recharge. This new seven-year/140 000 km maintenance plan replaces the current three-year/60 000 km. This is available nationwide until the end of September 2025, subject to vehicle availability. 'Extending the maintenance plan of the XC60 reflects Volvo Car South Africa's focus on long-term vehicle care and customer value,' Grant Locke, Managing Director at Volvo Car South Africa says. 'It forms part of our broader commitment to delivering an ownership experience that matches the quality of our vehicles and the needs of today's drivers.' Volvo confirms four new models for the South African market, and they're not all electric

Image: Supplied Volvo Car South Africa (VCSA) is set to launch four key new models in the coming year, with the company confirming recently that the new ES90 Sedan was on the radar for local introduction, along with the EX30 Cross Country and updated versions of the XC60 and XC90 SUVs. VCSA was at the centre of controversy earlier this year after the importer closed around half of its dealerships, essentially only leaving sales representation in the three major centres, and service outlets in more remote regions such as the Eastern Cape. This, it said, was due to the company shifting its focus to an all-electric future. However, while the new Volvo ES90 and EX30 Cross Country are fully electric, the updated XC60 and XC90 vehicles will offer a choice between mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid petrol power. 'Our focus is clear: we are committed to offering South African motorists more choice as they make the transition to electric driving,' said VCSA's new managing director Grant Locke. 'These new vehicles, paired with our ongoing investment in our local operations and services, underline the fact that we are here to stay and grow.' What can customers expect? Image: Supplied Volvo says the twin-motor flagship version, fitted with a 106kWh battery, can cover up to 700km on the WLTP testing cycle. Equally impressive is that 300km of range can be added in just 10 minutes when the car is plugged into a 350kW fast charger. Like the new EX90 SUV, the Volvo ES90 is crafted around the SPA2 vehicle architecture and features the company's new Superset tech stack, consisting of a single set of hardware and software modules that will underpin all upcoming EV models. The cabin features Volvo's new-generation 14.5-inch infotainment system, with built-in Google and a 5G-capable operating system powered by Snapdragon and Qualcomm Technologies. The vehicle's advanced safety features are powered by an advanced array of sensors, including five radars, seven cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors and one lidar device. 'This sensor set enables vision beyond human range to help avoid collisions and hazards on the road,' Volvo said. "Together with its powerful core computers, the ES90 continues our new era of safety we established with the EX90.' Volvo EX30 Cross Country Although the EX30 is already classified as a crossover vehicle, the CC treatment adds a few rugged touches to the mix, while simultaneously ushering in new adventure experience packages for customers. Local pricing and specifications for the EX30 Cross Country will be announced closer to the South African launch later this year. Image: Supplied The new model features a twin-motor all-wheel drive system and its ride height has reportedly been raised by 18mm. It also rolls on unique black wheels, which can be optionally fitted with 18-inch all terrain tyres. The full powertrain line-up for the EX30 Cross Country has yet to be announced but, depending on the model, it will cover up to 427km between charges, and charge from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 26 minutes. Volvo XC60 and XC90 facelifts While the all-electric EX90 flagship SUV and upcoming EX60 were expected to replace the petrol-powered XC90 and XC60 models, Volvo has now announced facelifted versions of the latter without any indication of when the ICE model will be discontinued. The ICE-powered Volvo XC90 has been given a new lease on life. Inside, they feature Volvo's latest 11.2-inch free-standing touchscreen, boasting 21% sharper pixel density and enhanced functionality.
