‘There's still a fight to fight': Marking four years since the Afzaal family attack

CTV News06-06-2025
It has been four years since the Afzaal family was killed. CTV London's Lauren Stallone reports.
June 6, 2021, was a wake-up call for Esa Islam when his cousin and her family were killed in a targeted attack.
The victims were Alman Afzaal, his wife Madiha, their 15-year-old daughter Yumna and 74-year-old grandmother Talat, along with a surviving nine-year-old boy.
He said he knew he had to do something to help put an end to Islamophobia.
'The terrorist that killed my cousin and her family was someone not that far out of high school himself and it shows that radicalization happens when the people are young,' he said. 'In order to actually combat that, we have to start at the same age.'

Now nearly four years later, Islam is working with other youth advocates, through the Youth Coalition Combating Islamophobia (YCCI), to prevent similar attacks from happening in the future.
'We don't have to see another family walking down the street and then killed by hate ever again,' said Islam.
The YCCI is made up of individuals actively fighting Islamophobia through education, community engagement, and advocacy.
'We are canvassing around the neighborhoods around London with postcards about what is June 6, a quick paragraph that tells people what happened, why, and what we need to do as next steps,' said Islam.
Islam said he hopes this is just the beginning of radical change he can be a part of.
'The unfortunate thing is that there's still a fight to fight, it's not over yet,' he said.
The YCCI will be hosting an evening prayer on Friday to commemorate four years since the tragedy.
'This is something that will stay in our history forever, so we have to move past it, not by forgetting it, but by using it to fuel ourselves to make sure that it never happens again,' said Islam.

Calgary police arrest 11-year-old for allegedly robbing bus driver

Calgary police say an 11-year-old boy has been arrested after he allegedly held up a bus driver with a knife. Police say a bus driver parked at Erlton Station was approached by a youth at 11:45 p.m. on July 29. The suspect was allegedly armed with a knife and demanded the driver's phone. Police said the driver was able to 'de-escalate the situation' and the suspect left a short time later with an undisclosed amount of money. The youth joined a group of teens waiting outside the bus, who all left the scene. The driver called police, who located the group at 25 Street S.W. and Macleod Trail South. The youths were arrested without incident. Police say the group is believed to be involved in a liquor store robbery earlier that evening in the 500 block of 11 Avenue S.W. In that incident, police said a group of teens ran into the store and stole multiple bottles of liquor valued at more than $200. Three youths were arrested, including the 11-year-old believed to be responsible for the incident with the bus driver. A 14-year-old girl was charged with shoplifting and three counts of failing to comply with a release order. Charges are pending against a 16-year-old girl in connection with the liquor store theft. All of the youth suspects are not being named due to the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Petition to keep Alberta in Canada can start rolling out, says electoral officer

Alberta's chief electoral officer says a proposed referendum question on separation will go before a judge, despite calls from the premier to stop the process. EDMONTON — A former deputy premier's petition to have Alberta declare that its official policy is to remain in Canada can start rolling out across the province. Chief electoral officer Gordon McClure says canvassers with the Alberta Forever Canada citizen initiative can begin gathering signatures. Submitted by Thomas Lukaszuk, a former Progressive Conservative cabinet minister, the petition is for a policy proposal asking people: 'Do you agree that Alberta should remain in Canada?' Canvassers have three months to gather around 294,000 signatures on the petition. McClure has also referred a competing pro-separation referendum question by the Alberta Prosperity Project to a judge to decide if it contravenes the Constitution. That question seeks a yes or no answer to: 'Do you agree that the Province of Alberta shall become a sovereign country and cease to be a province in Canada?' If approved, the Alberta Prosperity Project would need to collect 177,000 signatures in four months to put the question on a ballot due to new provincial rules. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 30, 2025.
