TN BJP slams MK Stalin govt over attack on journalist, demands immediate action
Prasad said the incident exposes the growing impunity enjoyed by criminal networks involved in illegal sand mining across the state, and accused the ruling DMK regime of turning a blind eye to the ongoing plunder of Tamil Nadu's natural resources.
Journalist Silambarasan was attacked in Velliyampatti near Salem while reporting on red sand theft.
According to Prasad, over 30 members of the sand mafia brutally assaulted the reporter, issued death threats, seized his camera, and cut its cables in an attempt to destroy evidence.
'What's worse,' he alleged, 'is that there are credible reports suggesting that the local Tahsildar and the Village Administrative Officer (VAO) were complicit in this attack. This is not just a law-and-order failure—it's a collapse of governance.'
ANS Prasad demanded that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin take immediate steps to clamp down on illegal sand mining, which he said has reached unprecedented levels under the current regime.
'The Goondas Act must be invoked against these sand mafia criminals. Their properties and vehicles should be confiscated, and those aiding them within the government must be identified and punished,' he said.
He also urged the state to provide journalist Silambarasan with full police protection, stating that 'an honest reporter has risked his life to expose corruption. The government has a duty to ensure his safety.'
Prasad accused officials in the Water Resources Department and various district administrations of aiding and abetting the illegal mining racket.
The BJP spokesperson demanded a comprehensive intelligence-led investigation to identify and dismiss corrupt government personnel involved in the racket.
Quoting Enforcement Directorate reports, Prasad claimed that illegal financial transactions worth Rs 4,730 crore have been linked to the sand mafia in Tamil Nadu.
He also pointed out that the Supreme Court, in response to a 2018 petition by Alagarsamy, had ordered Tamil Nadu and four other states to submit reports on illegal sand mining by January 2025.
Demanding justice, Prasad called for the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a retired Supreme Court judge to thoroughly investigate the sand mining network and administrative collusion.
'This attack on journalist Silambarasan is not an isolated case. It reflects the growing threat to free speech and the safety of whistleblowers under the DMK government,' Prasad said.

After a Class 7 student appealed to Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath for a fee waiver, he assured her support — paving the way for her dream of becoming an IAS officer. The school is run by RSS's education wing Vidya Bharati, and charges a monthly fee of ₹1,650 for Class 7, reported NDTV. Pankhuri has outstanding dues of about ₹18,000. The student, Pankhuri Tripathi, said the school told her that there was no such provision. "I had gone to the chief minister with a fee pardon request. He gave me a chocolate and assured me that it would be done. But when I went to school with my father, they misbehaved with us," Pankhuri said. She added that the school management had told them that if more people asked for such waivers, the institution would not be able to function. 'They said they have to pay teachers,' Pankuri said, as per NDTV. Pankhuri's father, Rajiv Kumar Tripathi, had suffered a leg injury, following which he lost his job. 'When I was at home during the pandemic, I slipped off the terrace and suffered a leg injury. I lost my job,' Rajiv said. He said both his children study in English-medium schools, with his son currently in Class 12. Pankhuri was not able to attend school after February given the family's difficulty in paying the fees. 'It is my son's last year in school, so I did not want to disrupt his education. I thought of taking my daughter out of school for a year,' NDTV quoted Rajiv as saying. However, Rajiv then had the idea of attending the CM's Janata Durbar on July 1, during which Adityanath directed officials to ensure that Pankhuri's education is not affected. However, when Rajiv took his daughter to the school, the management 'misbehaved' with them, saying there was no such provision for a pardon. Tejashwi's RJD moves Supreme Court challenging EC's Bihar electoral roll revision

The poll body's move came just months ahead of Bihar assembly polls, which scheduled for later this year. Earlier today, the election commission had asserted that there is 'no change' in instructions about the implementation of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. It added that the exercise is being done 'smoothly at the ground level'. Almost two weeks back, on June 24, the election body had issued the instructions of carrying out an SIR in Bihar, in a bid to weed out ineligible voters from the electoral roll. The exercise aims to cover as many as eight crore voters by July 25. However, it has become a major flashpoint between the opposition parties and the election commission in the state. Tejshwai Yadav, who is the leaders of the opposition in Bihar state assembly, questioned why the exercise was being carried out only in Bihar, while the previous such revision happened in 2003 across the entire country. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge also criticised the move and said it was a 'conspiracy by BJP-RSS to snatch away the voting rights of Dalits and other deprived sections'. What Bihar's Chief Electoral Officer said Amid the controversy sparked by the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, Bihar's Chief Electoral Officer said in a post on X that the exercise was progressing in state as per the ECI's order. 'SIR in Bihar is progressing as per ECI's order dated 24 June 2025. As per that order, the draft electoral rolls that will be issued on 1 August 2025 will contain the names of the existing electors whose enumeration forms are received,' the officer said in a post on X. "All measures are being taken to facilitate the existing electors to complete the documentation. These existing voters will have time to submit the documents even after first submitting their Enumeration Forms. All activities are exactly as per ECI's order dated 24.06.2025," read a follow-up post.

Kolkata: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s new West Bengal president Samik Bhattacharya on Sunday urged the 'open-minded, progressive, nationalist Muslims' to join hands with the party in the upcoming state polls to counter radicalisation and the 'silent war to change the demographic character of India'— a statement that invited sharp reaction from the ruling Trinamool Congress.
