TN BJP slams MK Stalin govt over attack on journalist, demands immediate action

Hans India3 days ago
Chennai: Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad has strongly condemned the brutal attack on journalist Silambarasan in Salem district, alleging a complete administrative breakdown under the DMK government and rampant collusion between officials and the sand mafia.
Prasad said the incident exposes the growing impunity enjoyed by criminal networks involved in illegal sand mining across the state, and accused the ruling DMK regime of turning a blind eye to the ongoing plunder of Tamil Nadu's natural resources.
Journalist Silambarasan was attacked in Velliyampatti near Salem while reporting on red sand theft.
According to Prasad, over 30 members of the sand mafia brutally assaulted the reporter, issued death threats, seized his camera, and cut its cables in an attempt to destroy evidence.
'What's worse,' he alleged, 'is that there are credible reports suggesting that the local Tahsildar and the Village Administrative Officer (VAO) were complicit in this attack. This is not just a law-and-order failure—it's a collapse of governance.'
ANS Prasad demanded that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin take immediate steps to clamp down on illegal sand mining, which he said has reached unprecedented levels under the current regime.
'The Goondas Act must be invoked against these sand mafia criminals. Their properties and vehicles should be confiscated, and those aiding them within the government must be identified and punished,' he said.
He also urged the state to provide journalist Silambarasan with full police protection, stating that 'an honest reporter has risked his life to expose corruption. The government has a duty to ensure his safety.'
Prasad accused officials in the Water Resources Department and various district administrations of aiding and abetting the illegal mining racket.
The BJP spokesperson demanded a comprehensive intelligence-led investigation to identify and dismiss corrupt government personnel involved in the racket.
Quoting Enforcement Directorate reports, Prasad claimed that illegal financial transactions worth Rs 4,730 crore have been linked to the sand mafia in Tamil Nadu.
He also pointed out that the Supreme Court, in response to a 2018 petition by Alagarsamy, had ordered Tamil Nadu and four other states to submit reports on illegal sand mining by January 2025.
Demanding justice, Prasad called for the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a retired Supreme Court judge to thoroughly investigate the sand mining network and administrative collusion.
'This attack on journalist Silambarasan is not an isolated case. It reflects the growing threat to free speech and the safety of whistleblowers under the DMK government,' Prasad said.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath assures fee waiver to Class 7 girl, RSS-run school refuses: ‘No such provision'

After a Class 7 student appealed to Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath for a fee waiver, he assured her support — paving the way for her dream of becoming an IAS officer. UP CM Adityanath had assured the girl that she would not face obstacles in her education.(PTI) 'Either your fees will be waived, or we will arrange the amount,' Adityanath told the student, news agency PTI reported. However, despite the chief minister's assurance that the girl would face no obstacles in her education, the school management refused to pardon her fees, according to an NDTV report. The school is run by RSS's education wing Vidya Bharati, and charges a monthly fee of ₹1,650 for Class 7, reported NDTV. Pankhuri has outstanding dues of about ₹18,000. The student, Pankhuri Tripathi, said the school told her that there was no such provision. "I had gone to the chief minister with a fee pardon request. He gave me a chocolate and assured me that it would be done. But when I went to school with my father, they misbehaved with us," Pankhuri said. She added that the school management had told them that if more people asked for such waivers, the institution would not be able to function. 'They said they have to pay teachers,' Pankuri said, as per NDTV. Pankhuri's father, Rajiv Kumar Tripathi, had suffered a leg injury, following which he lost his job. 'When I was at home during the pandemic, I slipped off the terrace and suffered a leg injury. I lost my job,' Rajiv said. He said both his children study in English-medium schools, with his son currently in Class 12. Pankhuri was not able to attend school after February given the family's difficulty in paying the fees. 'It is my son's last year in school, so I did not want to disrupt his education. I thought of taking my daughter out of school for a year,' NDTV quoted Rajiv as saying. However, Rajiv then had the idea of attending the CM's Janata Durbar on July 1, during which Adityanath directed officials to ensure that Pankhuri's education is not affected. However, when Rajiv took his daughter to the school, the management 'misbehaved' with them, saying there was no such provision for a pardon. 'Truth behind BJP's slogan': Akhilesh Yadav's jibe at UP CM Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav took a jibe at the BJP and CM Adityanath, saying this was the 'truth behind BJP's slogan'. 'Those who are busy hoarding, how will they waive or pay someone's fees?,' Yadav said in a post on X. The SP chief also promised that Pankhuri's education would not stop. 'This is the truth of the BJP's fake slogans of 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao'. We urge the BJP not to lie to children,' he said. However, Pankhuri's family has rested their hopes on the UP CM, with Rajiv Tripathi saying, '…We are associated with the Math and Maharaj ji (Yogi Adityanath) and we believe he will ensure my daughter's education.'

Tejashwi's RJD moves Supreme Court challenging EC's Bihar electoral roll revision

Tejashwi Yadav's party Rashtriya Janata Dal, which is in opposition in Bihar, has approached the Supreme Court to challenge the election commission move of implementing 'Special Intensive Revision' (SIR) of voters in the state. The poll body's move came just months ahead of Bihar assembly polls, which scheduled for later this year. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav(File/ANI) On behalf of RJD, its Member of Parliament Manoj Jha has challenged Election Commission of India's (ECI) move in the Supreme Court, reported ANI. Earlier today, the election commission had asserted that there is 'no change' in instructions about the implementation of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. It added that the exercise is being done 'smoothly at the ground level'. Almost two weeks back, on June 24, the election body had issued the instructions of carrying out an SIR in Bihar, in a bid to weed out ineligible voters from the electoral roll. The exercise aims to cover as many as eight crore voters by July 25. However, it has become a major flashpoint between the opposition parties and the election commission in the state. Tejshwai Yadav, who is the leaders of the opposition in Bihar state assembly, questioned why the exercise was being carried out only in Bihar, while the previous such revision happened in 2003 across the entire country. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge also criticised the move and said it was a 'conspiracy by BJP-RSS to snatch away the voting rights of Dalits and other deprived sections'. What Bihar's Chief Electoral Officer said Amid the controversy sparked by the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, Bihar's Chief Electoral Officer said in a post on X that the exercise was progressing in state as per the ECI's order. 'SIR in Bihar is progressing as per ECI's order dated 24 June 2025. As per that order, the draft electoral rolls that will be issued on 1 August 2025 will contain the names of the existing electors whose enumeration forms are received,' the officer said in a post on X. "All measures are being taken to facilitate the existing electors to complete the documentation. These existing voters will have time to submit the documents even after first submitting their Enumeration Forms. All activities are exactly as per ECI's order dated 24.06.2025," read a follow-up post.

Not only Hindus, need nationalist Muslims as well, says new Bengal BJP chief

Kolkata: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s new West Bengal president Samik Bhattacharya on Sunday urged the 'open-minded, progressive, nationalist Muslims' to join hands with the party in the upcoming state polls to counter radicalisation and the 'silent war to change the demographic character of India'— a statement that invited sharp reaction from the ruling Trinamool Congress. BJP West Bengal President Samik Bhattacharya garlands a bust of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on his birth anniversary in Kolkata on Sunday. (ANI) 'Radicalisation has spread everywhere but nobody can split Bengal again. A silent war is on since the 80's to change the demographic character of India. To counter this, we need not only Hindus but nationalist Muslims as well. The coming election is a test for Bengal's open-minded, progressive, nationalist Muslims,' Bhattacharya said, paying tribute to party ideologue Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, whose contribution in creation of West Bengal during Partition is hailed by the saffron camp, on his birth anniversary. Earlier on July 3, minutes after being declared president of the state unit, Bhattacharya had said: 'We need to protect and nurture the pluralistic character of West Bengal. Let Muharram and Durga puja immersion processions take place together. Muslims need to understand that BJP is not against them. We are only against those who have picked up stones and swords. We want to put books and pens in their hands instead.' 'Don't vote for the BJP if you think it is untouchable but face the mirror. At least 90 % of the people killed in clashes in recent years in Bengal were Muslims,' he had added. TMC spokesperson Jay Prakash Majumdar on Sunday hit out at Bhattacharya. 'Bhattacharya has come up with a new recipe. He is trying to reach out to not only the Muslims but to the Left and Congress as well. One of his party leaders has taken the opposite line. The elections will be over by the time BJP clears its confusion. It will be left with no seats,' he said. He was referring to BJP's Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the assembly, who has been prescribing since January that his party should ignore Muslims and focus entirely on Hindu votes for the 2026 polls– a view that has not been endorsed by the BJP national leadership. The Congress also slammed Bhattacharya over his remark. Former state Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, 'BJP's appeal to the Muslims is a tactical move. Their real target is to form a Hindu rashtra (nation) where Muslims will be treated as secondary citizens.' The BJP has been alleging for years that TMC chairperson and chief minister Mamata Banerjee allows illegal Bangladeshi migrants to settle down only to secure their votes. The party has focused on this narrative ever since crackdown on alleged illegal migrants began in BJP-ruled states a few months ago. According to surveys done by all parties, Muslim, who comprise around 30% of the state's population and are widely seen as the TMC's vote bank, play a decisive role in at least 120 of Bengal's 294 assembly seats, of which BJP could win only 75 in 2021. BJP fielded nine Muslim candidates but none could win. TMC, on the other hand, has 42 Muslim MLAs. Described as BJP's 'official party line' by state leaders, including former state president Sukanta Majumdar, Bhattacharya's strategy is being seen as a move to encourage Muslims to vote against TMC rather than for BJP. 'Not all Muslims are happy with the TMC regime. Lack of local employment forces millions of them to look for work in other states. Bhattarcharya's appeal may create a split in Muslim votes. Even if these votes go to the Left or Congress, BJP will be the ultimate beneficiary,' a senior state BJP leader said, requesting anonymity. He cited examples such as Murshidabad district, where Muslims comprise 66.28 % of the population, the state's highest, Congress won the Sagardighi assembly bypoll in 2023. TMC had to make the winner switch camps months later. In 2021, Muslims helped Nawsad Siddiqui's Indian Secular Front win the Bhangar seat in North 24 Parganas. 'In the recent assembly bypoll at Nadia district's Kaliganj, Muslim families that voted for CPI(M) were targeted by TMC workers. A 10-year-old child died in a bomb attack. TMC is wary about the minority community,' the leader added. Accusing the BJP of selectively targeting Bengali-speaking Muslims from her state, chief minister Mamata Banerjee has countered the allegations of partisan politics saying she treats people from all faiths equally. On Sunday, she also paid tributes to Mookerjee in a social media post, drawing flak from the Congress. Taking a jibe at her, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said: 'It is not surprising that Banerjee has paid tributes to Mookerjee. She always says good things about the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Have you ever seen her criticising its chief Mohan Bhagwat?'
