Few video game adaptations have managed to break the curse, but The Last of Us did just that when its first season premiered in 2023. Rather than falling into the usual pitfalls of shallow storytelling and clumsy pacing, HBO's adaptation captured the hearts of critics, general viewers and fans alike.
The first season garnered 24 Emmy nominations and won eight awards, including Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for Nick Offerman. Now, the post-apocalyptic series is almost back for its highly anticipated second season, with Kaitlyn Dever joining the cast as Abby.
Premiering later this week, the seven-episode season will see Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey reprise their roles as Joel and Ellie, and will adapt at least a portion of The Last of Us Part II. Here's everything we know about The Last of Us season 2, including where and when you'll be able to watch it in the UK.
When does 'The Last of Us' season 2 come out?
It's official: The Last of Us season two will premiere on Sunday 13 April 2025 in the US. In the UK, it will debut on Monday 14 April. It's now been confirmed that the first episode will be broadcast simultaneously at 2am on Sky Atlantic and Now, in line with its HBO release.
If you're not keen on staying up late, don't worry – it'll be available to stream on catch-up shortly after, and a prime-time repeat will take place at 9pm on Sky Atlantic.
What is 'The Last of Us' season 2 about?
The Last of Us season 2 will follow the events of the second game in the franchise, but it won't cover all of it. In fact, the TV adaptation of The Last of Us: Part II will stretch out over multiple seasons – which makes sense given the game's scope. 'We don't think that we're going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we're taking our time and go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in season 1 too,' Craig Mazin told Deadline last year. 'We feel like it's almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require season 4'.
The official synopsis for The Last of Us season 2 states: 'After five years of peace following the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie's collective past catches up to them, drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind'. The teaser trailer doesn't reveal too much, but it looks like, as with season 1, it's sticking fairly close to the source material.
Mazin and Neil Druckmann, the game's creator, say they've found a natural ending point to break the game up into multiple seasons. While we won't go into detail (no game spoilers here), some fans speculate that season 2 will end at the theatre, with Ellie coming face to face with Abby.
In the full-length trailer for The Last of Us season 2, we get a proper look at some major new characters in action. Kaitlyn Dever's Abby is seen fighting off infected and standing among the Washington Liberation Front. Isabela Merced's Dina – Ellie's love interest – is introduced; Young Mazino's Jesse appears in some scenes and Jeffrey Wright's Isaac is shown leading the WLF. Catherine O'Hara also makes a brief appearance, but her role remains a mystery, though she's likely a new character made for the show.
How to catch up on 'The Last of Us' season 1 in the UK
The Last of Us is available to stream on Sky and Now TV here in the UK. If you're not already a Sky customer, you can get yourself a Sky Stream box (£15 per month, Sky.com), which comes with a Sky TV entertainment package and a free subscription to Netflix's standard plan with ads, as well as a free subscription to Discovery+ (the home of Eurosport).
If you don't want to buy the Sky Stream box, but still want to watch The Last of Us, you can stream it on the Sky-owned Now streaming service (formerly Now TV). You'll need an entertainment membership to watch the show (£9.99 per month, Nowtv.com).

How many episodes of 'The Last of Us' season 2 are there?
The Last of Us season 2 has seven episodes in total. That's slightly shorter than the length of season 1.
The first episode of The Last of Us, titled Future Days will be broadcast on Monday 14 April 2025 in the UK. That title is significant for anyone who's played the game, but we won't give any spoilers.

'Challenging' BBC drama featuring Adolescence star confirms release date
Unforgivable is a new drama from Time writer Jimmy McGovern and has a stellar cast including Anna Friel and Line of Duty's Anna Maxwell Martin The BBC has unveiled the release date for a chilling new drama featuring a young actor from Adolescence and a star from Line of Duty. Unforgivable is a gripping original drama penned by Time's scriptwriter Jimmy McGovern, and much like the Sean Bean and Stephen Graham led series Time, it's set within and revolves around the UK prison system. The plot centres on the fictional Mitchell family, who are left grappling with the devastating aftermath of an act of abuse committed by one of their own. After serving two years of his prison sentence, Joe (portrayed by Bobby Schofield) finds himself in an institution that provides him with a home and rehabilitation post-release. He embarks on therapy sessions in an attempt to comprehend what drove him to commit such a horrific crime, and to confront the repercussions of his actions, reports the Liverpool Echo. The recently released trailer by the BBC depicts Joe adjusting to life after prison, while his family continue to question the reasons behind his abusive behaviour. His sister Anne (played by Emmy-award winner Anna Friel) is coping with the impact his crime has had on her family, including her sons Tom (Adolescence actor Austin Haynes) and Peter (Fin McParland), whilst her father Brian (David Threlfall) is livid at the idea of her having been in contact with Joe. Meanwhile, Line of Duty actress Anna Maxwell Martin portrays a former nun who provides Joe with therapy at the institution as part of his rehabilitation. The upcoming drama Unforgivable has created quite a buzz with the BBC hinting that it's all about the widespread impact of abuse and the struggle to move beyond its devastation. "The drama examines the extensive ripple effect of abuse from multiple perspectives and how those involved can try to move forwards in the midst of the devastation," the corporation teased ahead of the show's anticipated release. It has now been confirmed that Unforgivable will debut in full on BBC iPlayer at 6am on Thursday 24th July, with the episode airing later that day on BBC Two. Reacting to the newly-published trailer, as it was shared by Marcella actress Anna on Instagram, one fan wrote: "Can't wait - looks so good." Another posted: "Ohhhhhhhh wow - I feel a binge watch coming up!!!!!!" "Gonna be seated to watch this religiously. Congrats on your new project," a third said. "It's McGovern so looks so gripping already, thanks for sharing," someone else wrote. Set against the backdrop of Liverpool, where it was filmed, the cast is further bolstered with Mark Womack, Paddy Rowan, and Phina Oruche taking up pivotal supporting roles. Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, previously shared an insight into what viewers can expect from the drama, saying: "Jimmy McGovern is one of our greatest dramatists, and a master at writing about today's world. "His new film sensitively examines the pain of abuse and how it affects not only the victim but ripples out across the whole family. To see it brought to the screen with such a high calibre cast and creative team is further testament to the quality of Jimmy's writing." Writer Jimmy McGovern also said: "I can't believe the cast and crew that have been assembled for this production. It's a challenging film, yes, but I can't wait for it to be shown." Colin McKeown, executive producer for LA Productions added: "This is a profoundly challenging and sensitive subject, tackled with intelligence and care by Jimmy McGovern. It's a privilege to be working with him again following the success of our previous collaborations on single dramas: Common, Care, Reg and Anthony." Superman cast salaries unveiled and highest earner not who fans think
Some of the stars' earning may be lower than fans expect The salaries for the cast of the new Superman film have apparently been revealed and the highest earner may not be the one who fans think. Its release becomes the first in the newly rebooted cinematic universe from DC Studios. Now under the stewardship of James Gunn, who serves as writer and director for the latest release. Gunn is known and celebrated on his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy for Marvel and it is hoped he can work similar magic for DC's library of characters. According to the film's synopsis, when Superman gets drawn into conflicts at home and abroad, his actions are questioned, giving tech billionaire Lex Luthor the opportunity to get the Man of Steel out of the way for good. Will intrepid reporter Lois Lane and Superman's four-legged companion, Krypto, be able to help him before it's too late? The cast sees a brand new actor take on the pressure of becoming not only Clark Kent but also the Man of Steel. Joining him are a whole host of new faces as the hero's allies and adversaries. That includes Marvelous Mrs Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan as Clark's colleague and love interest Lois Lane. There's also Nathan Fillion from Castle and star of The Rookie as well as The Last of Us breakout star Isabella Merced. as well as The Righteous Gemstones actor Skyler Gisondo. However, despite taking on the mantle as the titular hero now in cinemas, David Corenswet did not make the most out of his cast members. Instead, it is claimed that British actor Nicholas Hoult, who plays the villainous Lex Luthor took home the most for his part in the film. According to reports, this is because Hoult is already an experienced film star with some star power to his name. Hoult has starred in Mad Max: Fury Road, a number of X-Men movies for Fox, along with The Menu, Clint Eastwood's Juror No. 2, and the recent Nosferatu. Corenswet and Brosnahan are both currently more well known for their television work. While Corenswet had small roles in Twisters and Pearl, he has starred in The Politician and miniseries We Own This City. Brosnahan featured in the film The Amateur but was the lead role in the award winning The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. However, what the numbers are in relation to that kind of deal is not known. However, Deadline has claimed that the film has already earned more than $40 million. That figure was impressively from previews taking place ahead of the weekend around the world. That means it only accounts for screenings for the Wednesday and Thursday before the title's official release day. Projections have estimated this could mean a taking of around $115 million for the opening weekend.

The comedian and presenter, 39, joined Fearne Cotton on BBC Radio 2 this week, where he recalled his most memorable reveal on The Masked Singer UK, and naturally, it featured Macy Gray's infamous exit. Asked if he had a favourite unmasking, Joel didn't hesitate – but it wasn't just Macy Gray's name that made it special. 'It was so awkward,' he laughed, before calling the moment 'the best reveal for so many reasons' and admitting it was comedy gold from start to finish. What made it even funnier? The fact that Macy, disguised in an enormous toad costume, tried to storm off the stage in protest, and the producers cut Joel's best line from the episode. 'We did the reveal – Macy Gray – everyone's happy… apart from her,' Joel laughed during the radio chat. 'Might be the funniest I have ever been.' Apparently, even The Masked Singer has its limits when it comes to froggy wordplay. The incident unfolded during a previous season when Macy Gray competed in disguise as 'Toad in the Hole' – sporting a purple suit whilst wearing what can only be described as a Yorkshire pudding belt. Fans instantly suspected the Grammy-winning artist behind the mask thanks to her distinctive vocals – but producers chose to unmask a different contestant, a decision which did not go down well with the American singer. When she was finally eliminated and unmasked, Joel described her reaction as nothing short of TV history. 'One of the characters gets voted off, and they are really not happy about it. Like genuinely,' he said in a separate interview with Principle Magazine. 'You can't be vexed when you're dressed as a toad,' he laughed. And yet, that's exactly what happened. According to Joel, Macy refused to come back on stage for over an hour after her unmasking. What audiences saw on air was just a fraction of the tension backstage. Describing the visual, Joel has previously said watching a six-foot toad sulking off stage was the most hilarious thing he's ever witnessed on set. And it seems The Masked Singer team weren't quite sure how to handle it either. Despite the polished edit that eventually aired, production scrambled to coax her back on stage so the show could finish the segment. The Masked Singer is no stranger to bizarre TV moments. From dramatic walk-offs to wild guesses and tearful reveals, the show thrives on unpredictability – but Macy's exit might just top the list. The U.S. star isn't the first celebrity to take issue with their portrayal on the show, but according to Joel, her reaction set a new bar.
