Mullins plots plan for King and Queen's horse after one-year wait pays off

Willie Mullins is set to plot a route back to Royal Ascot for Reaching High, who is owned by King Charles and Queen Camilla, after his luckless run in the Ascot Stakes.
The four-year-old, sent off the 11/4 favourite for the 2m4f contest on day one of the meeting, was denied a clear run under Ryan Moore and ended up finishing ninth as the Henry de Bromhead-trained Ascending (20/1) won under Billy Lee.
However, Mullins was celebrating in the winners enclosure on Friday as Ethical Diamond won the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes in the hands of Moore.
The Closutton trainer and his wife Jackie had taken part in the royal procession before racing and his dual-purpose performer had no trouble in justifying 3-1 favouritism.
Fourth last year, he was 2lb higher having also finished fourth in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham – but the result barely looked in doubt and he came home two lengths clear of Mutaawid and Naqeeb, with the trainer admitting the race had been the plan for the past year.
Mullins said: 'Last year he just ran too free and things didn't work out for him, but he still ran a cracker to be fourth so I thought if we get things right this year he had a real live chance and it worked out that way.
'We will give him a little break, bring him home; we will look at York next, a race like the Ebor.'
He added: 'These are just fantastic days, Jackie was just saying to me coming in here today 'just enjoy it', and then to have a winner on top that is the cherry on the cake."
Mullins stated that he is already plotting a route back to Royal Ascot next year for Reaching High, revealing: 'Tuesday was a little disappointing, but we live to fight another day and hopefully Reaching High will be back for the same race next year. Ryan had nowhere to go, he was just locked in on the inside and that was that."

Brighton exit confirmed for one Ireland international, but not who you think

Wycombe Wanderers have snapped up Ireland Under-21 midfielder Jamie Mullins on a permanent transfer from Brighton. Mullins, who played for the Seagulls last weekend in a 6-1 friendly win against his new club, has been at Brighton since his January 2023 move from Bohemians. The 20-year-old made 46 Premier League 2 appearances and could feature in Tuesday evening's friendly for Wycombe against Sutton United. Mullins followed the same path as Evan Ferguson by moving from League of Ireland side Bohs, where he made over 30 first-team appearances, to Brighton. Wycombe head coach Mike Dodds said: 'Jamie's got a really bright future ahead of him in the game and we're excited to bring him to Wycombe to develop his career and add another option for us in midfield. 'He was playing senior football as a teenager over in Ireland and has kicked on again in Brighton's academy, so he's well placed to come here and challenge for first-team football.' Brighton's technical director David Weir paid tribute to the midfielder, saying: 'Jamie has been an excellent professional during his time in our academy, which reflects in the fact he was captain of the under-21s last season. 'We wish him the best of luck for the future.' Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email .

Alpha can capture opening day glory at Killarney

Irish previews Alpha Capture has a style of running which always demands a little luck in running and while the Willie Mullins-trained five-year-old is running at a track with similar demands, he makes plenty of appeal in the TXODDS Handicap, the fourth race on the opening day of Killarney's five-day July festival. An ex-Willie Haggas-trained gelding, he made a promising start for Mullins, winning once for new connections, at this venue, from just four outings, and being a shade unlucky on another. Early last month, he made his first start in ten 10 months and once again he could be counted as unlucky as he ran into a cul-de-sac before getting out and flying home to finish a close second to Tachos. That run ought to have brought him forward quite a bit and, given his style of running, with no great concern about the high draw, he can take this en route to a likely run or two at Galway's summer festival. In recent seasons, we've come to expect the quality of the juvenile maidens at this track to be very high and the festival opener, the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden, looks certain to live up to expectation. Aidan O'Brien's Benevuto Cellini has got to be the pick, though Ipanema Beach has decent form in the book and there are also some interesting newcomers in the field. The selection was quite well touted prior to his debut and while he gave best to another well-regarded stablemate, Dorset, it could be argued he emerged as the brightest prospect in the race. Prominent from quite an early stage, he was the only one to make a race of it with the winner, who had the benefit of previous experience. With the experience and the benefit of a decent draw, he should be in the van from the outset and can see off his seven rivals. Debutants Bond, Limestone, Hardy Warrior and his own stablemate, Endorsement, are worth noting in the betting, but Ipanema Beach has run to a good level on all three starts and ought to present the greatest danger. Joseph O'Brien's Defiantly ran a race full of promise when a fast-finishing third to two experienced sorts and he can build on that with victory in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Maiden, Sigliosa and Edge Of Seventeen can fill the frame. Defiantly's stablemate, Beautiful Affair, was unlucky in running last time out, at Tipperary, can make amends in the SIS Supporting Irish Racing Handicap. Downpatrick hosts the first of two days of action, and Willie Mullins can take the second race with Full Confession, while Edward O'Grady's Betty Dutton can earn reward for her consistency by taking the C. Russell Auto Sales Beginners' Chase.

I'm a BBC TV Wimbledon commentator who covered Carlos Alcaraz epic – I somehow held my pee for five-and-a-half hours

COMMENTATOR Nick Mullins joked not going to the toilet during Carlos Alcaraz's epic five-and-a-half-hour thriller was a bigger achievement than the Spaniard's French Open final win. Alcaraz came from two sets down and saved three Championship points at Roland Garros to beat Jannik Sinner in a record-breaking final last month. 12 Carlos Alcaraz beat Jannik Sinner in a thrilling French Open final Credit: Alamy 12 Nick Mullins managed to commentate on the five-hour-29-minute blockbuster without a loo break Credit: SunSport 12 Mullins covered the match next to Jim Courier for TNT Sports Credit: Instagram @andnickmullins Mullins called every point alongside Jim Courier for UK tennis fans watching on TV - with the tournament broadcast by TNT Sports for the first time. And for a man who has covered some of the grandest sporting events, he reckons Speaking to SunSport from the 'Roland Garros is special in a different way from Wimbledon. The duration. The quality of the play. READ MORE ON WIMBLEDON 'Jim and I realised we were seeing something special, we knew this was one of the great all-time finals. 'By the time we got to the fifth-set Championship tie-break, we had been yabbering away for five-and-a-half hours. 'We said nothing pretty much for the entire tie-break. 'It's a little bit depressing as a commentator because you think you're delivering little nuggets of gold with all the words that you use but actually I've never had more praise for saying nothing which is a double-edged sword!' Most read in Sport CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS But as well as commentating on one of the most gripping and dramatic tennis matches ever, Mullins somehow managed to do so without a single comfort break. He quipped: 'It's the height of my athletic achievement. Emma Raducanu OUT of Wimbledon despite brave effort against world No1 Aryna Sabalenka 'We were supplied with Haribos. 'But for a man of my age to go five hours and 29 minutes without needing to go for a pee, that is almost one of the proudest things I've ever achieved. 'Forget what Alcaraz did, I don't think I get the credit for going five-and-a-half hours without a pee!' Mullins is best known for his rugby union coverage, where matches are done and dusted within a third of the time of that Roland Garros masterpiece. So how does he find new ways to describe Alcaraz's ever-growing collection of outrageous winners? Well, sometimes the secret is not to even try. The experienced broadcaster - who first covered Wimbledon for BBC radio in 1993 - explained: 'There are two things. React naturally, try to imagine how you would react if you were at home. 'And sometimes again say nothing. The most powerful thing when he's done an extraordinary shot is for the audience to know that it's an extraordinary shot without me having to tell them. 12 WIMBLEDON 2025 LIVE - FOLLOW ALL THE LATEST SCORES AND UPDATES FROM A THRILLING FORTNIGHT AT SW19 'The key to television commentary is actually knowing when to shut up. We just drop little bits of perfume or paint in every now and again, just to add to the picture. 'I need to give my ears a rest. The art of television commentary is knowing not really what to say but when to say and when just to let you ride along with the natural sounds. 'TV commentators are almost like the conductors because there are several voices and sounds that you want to hear as the viewer: the umpire, the natural sounds… even if that is silence. 'Sometimes Centre Court is the most silent of silent places when they're waiting to serve on match point, so don't spoil that sound by talking over it.' TV commentary is a different art form from radio, where listeners are reliant on those on the microphones to paint the full picture they cannot see. But the power of silence was made abundantly clear to Mullins when he first started doing BBC TV duties at Wimbledon 15 years ago. Mullins - who is ironically more recognised by his voice rather than his face - said: 'There was an editor who used to say we never get letters from anyone complaining that the commentators don't talk enough. 12 Mullins commentates at Wimbledon from the Centre Court box Credit: SunSport 12 It has the perfect view of the famous grass court Credit: SunSport 12 Most commentary boxes are far higher in the stands Credit: Instagram @andnickmullins 12 Alcaraz saved three match points before storming back to win at Roland Garros Credit: Reuters 12 Mullins joked his achievement was just as impressive as Alcaraz's Credit: AFP 12 Mullins covers rugby most of the time but provides expert commentary on tennis, too Credit: Instagram / @craigdoyletv 'Every word I use, I'm aware that there's a chance I'm going to upset somebody. 'The fewer words I use, the less I'm going to get in the way and get between you and the players and the match. 'The editor used to say, 'If you can go a whole game without saying a word, I'll buy you a bag of doughnuts as a prize.' 'When 'I'm thinking, 'What do people at home want to hear now? Do they want to hear 15,000 people celebrating Emma doing extraordinary things against the world No1 or do they want to hear me talking about second serve percentages?' I don't have to think about it for long.' 12 Emma Raducanu had Centre Court on its feet at times against Aryna Sabalenka Credit: EPA 12 Mullins prepares handwritten notes for all matches including these for Raducanu vs Sabalenka Credit: SunSport
