Mullins plots plan for King and Queen's horse after one-year wait pays off
Willie Mullins is set to plot a route back to Royal Ascot for Reaching High, who is owned by King Charles and Queen Camilla, after his luckless run in the Ascot Stakes. The four-year-old, sent off the 11/4 favourite for the 2m4f contest on day one of the meeting, was denied a clear run under Ryan Moore and ended up finishing ninth as the Henry de Bromhead-trained Ascending (20/1) won under Billy Lee. However, Mullins was celebrating in the winners enclosure on Friday as Ethical Diamond won the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes in the hands of Moore. The Closutton trainer and his wife Jackie had taken part in the royal procession before racing and his dual-purpose performer had no trouble in justifying 3-1 favouritism. Fourth last year, he was 2lb higher having also finished fourth in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham – but the result barely looked in doubt and he came home two lengths clear of Mutaawid and Naqeeb, with the trainer admitting the race had been the plan for the past year. Mullins said: 'Last year he just ran too free and things didn't work out for him, but he still ran a cracker to be fourth so I thought if we get things right this year he had a real live chance and it worked out that way. 'We will give him a little break, bring him home; we will look at York next, a race like the Ebor.' He added: 'These are just fantastic days, Jackie was just saying to me coming in here today 'just enjoy it', and then to have a winner on top that is the cherry on the cake." Mullins stated that he is already plotting a route back to Royal Ascot next year for Reaching High, revealing: 'Tuesday was a little disappointing, but we live to fight another day and hopefully Reaching High will be back for the same race next year. Ryan had nowhere to go, he was just locked in on the inside and that was that."

No win for King Charles III and Queen Camilla on their return to Royal Ascot
ASCOT, England (AP) — King Charles III and Queen Camilla endured disappointment on the opening day of Royal Ascot as their horse, Reaching High, failed to back up his status as favorite in one of the big races. Going off at odds of 3-1, Reaching High got stuck near the rail and was never in contention to win the Ascot Stakes, finishing in ninth place under jockey Ryan Moore.

With the well-fancied Reaching High unable to land a blow when the 11-4 favourite for Tuesday's Ascot Stakes, attentions turned to the next runner to carry the royal silks in the penultimate race on Wednesday's card and Rainbows Edge was the 3-1 market leader come the off. The four-year-old had won three of her four starts for the the in-form training team of John and Thady Gosden, but while she travelled strongly for the first half of this straight mile contest under William Buick, she was a spent force with two furlongs to run and faded out of contention. John Gosden said: 'The ground was too quick for her, it dried out too much for her and she wants stepping up to a mile and a quarter. 'She's actually run well for a filly who wasn't in love with the ground, so we will just now go a mile and a quarter with a bit of ease in the ground and hopefully win a Listed race with her.' At the business end of proceedings it was Andrew Balding's Miss Information (11-1) and the Gavin Cromwell-trained Snellen who came to the fore, with the former coming out on top by a length in the hands of Oisin Murphy. Balding said: 'She's been a star, this filly. She had no luck last time at Epsom, she got shuffled back and just didn't seem to enjoy herself. 'Fast ground is what she wants, she just about got the mile. 'It's so nice for her owner, they really get a lot of enjoyment out of it and I'm so pleased for them. 'She's in the Bunbury Cup, we will try to get some black type at some stage and she'll make a lovely broodmare.'
