PSX opens on a positive note, gains over 1,600 points

After declining in the previous session, positive sentiments returned to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), with the benchmark KSE-100 Index gaining nearly 1,600 points during trading on Tuesday.
At 12:45pm, the benchmark KSE-100 was hovering at 139,836.63 level, an increase of 1,619.05 points or 1.17%.
Buying was observed in key sectors including commercial banks, cement, oil and gas exploration companies, OMCs, power generation and refinery. Index-heavy stocks including MARI, OGDC, PPL, POL, PSO, SNGPL, HUBCO, MCB and MEBL traded in the green.
On Monday, PSX opened the new week on a volatile note. The downturn was largely attributed to investor profit-taking ahead of July's end and cautious sentiment following a record-breaking run.
The benchmark KSE-100 Index declined by 379.78 points, or 0.27%, to close at 138,217.58 points.
Internationally, Asian share markets held their ground near a four-year peak on Tuesday, buoyed by Wall Street's closing record high ahead of a slate of corporate earnings. At the same time, investors took stock of tariff negotiations between the US and its trading partners.
Japanese shares briefly jumped at the open before trading modestly higher, while bonds had a muted reaction as the election results were largely priced in and were not as bad as investors had feared. The yen rallied 1% on Monday, recouping some of the losses from past weeks and was last little changed at 147.46 per dollar on Tuesday.
MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan hit its highest level since October 2021 in early Asian hours but was last little changed. The index is up nearly 16% this year.
Overnight, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq notched record-high closes on Monday, lifted by Alphabet and other megacaps ahead of a burst of earnings reports this week.
Investor focus has been on tariff negotiations ahead of the August 1 deadline with the European Union exploring a broader set of possible countermeasures against the United States a

Haseeb Waqas Sugar Mills halts share buyback amid speculative price hike

Haseeb Waqas Sugar Mills Limited announced on Monday its decision not to go for buyback of shares and halt any further activity due to the price hike of shares. The mills in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) shared that a meeting of the board of directors was held on July 25. 'The Board was apprised that after dissemination of information to PSX, speculators used this information and artificially raised the price of shares to more than 200%. Whereas when intimation letter was sent on 26 June 2025, the price of each share was around Rs10 and weighted average price for the last 3 years was also around Rs10/ per share,' it wrote to the bourse. The company shared that the price hike in shares was purely speculative in the nature as the company is 'not in operations and there is no incentive of any return which purely shows that this abrupt rise in prices of shares is solely to benefit the speculators in the market to sell their shares at the artificially created higher prices back to the company'. The notice further said that the company secretary further informed the Board that after intimation to the PSX of buyback, none of the sponsors or officers of the company directly or indirectly participated in trading of the shares of the company to make this intended transaction transparent or did not get any benefit from speculation. 'The Board of Directors of the company deliberated on the matter at length and showed grave concern over the situation of speculation in the market after intimation to PSX. The Board is unanimously of the view and has decided not to go for buyback of shares in these circumstances for the time being and halt any further activity in this regard.'

Stocks surge, KSE-100 hovers around 140,000 level

Bullish momentum was observed at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) amid anticipation of a policy rate cut in the upcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting. The benchmark KSE-100 Index traded near the 140,000 level during the opening minutes of trading on Monday. At 9:35am, the benchmark index was at 139,988.07, an increase of 780.79 points or 0.56%. Buying was observed in key sectors including automobile assemblers, commercial banks, oil and gas exploration companies, OMCs and refinery traded in the green. Index-heavy stocks, including PRL, ARL, MARI, OGDC, PPL, POL, PSO, SSGC and SNGPL, traded in the green. During the previous week, the market remained range-bound yet closed the week on a positive note, as investors weighed macroeconomic signals, anticipated monetary easing, and corporate earnings. The KSE-100 Index added 610 points, or 0.44% week-on-week (WoW), to settle at 139,207 points. Internationally, global stocks rose and the euro firmed on Monday after a trade agreement between the United States and the EU lifted sentiment and provided some clarity in a week of key policy meetings by the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan. The US struck a framework trade agreement with the European Union, imposing a 15% import tariff on most EU goods, half the threatened rate, a week after agreeing to a trade deal with Japan that lowered proposed tariffs on auto imports. Countries are scrambling to finalise trade deals ahead of an August 1 deadline set by US President Donald Trump, with talks between the US and China set for Monday in Stockholm amid expectations of another 90-day extension to the truce between the world's top two economies. S&P 500 futures rose 0.4% and the Nasdaq futures gained 0.5% while the euro firmed across the board, rising against the dollar, sterling and yen. European futures surged nearly 1%. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.27%, just shy of the almost four-year high it touched last week. Japan's Nikkei fell 0.8% after hitting a one-year high last week. While the baseline 15% tariff will still be seen by many in Europe as too high, compared with Europe's initial hopes to secure a zero-for-zero tariff deal, it is better than the threatened 30% rate. Risk boost from US-EU trade deal of little help to Indian rupee as outflows persist

MUMBAI: The Indian rupee is expected to open little changed on Monday, with any support from improved risk sentiment after a trade deal between the European Union (EU) and the U.S. likely to be capped by persistent foreign portfolio outflows. The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated the rupee will open in the 86.48-86.51 range versus the U.S. dollar, compared with Friday's close of 86.5150. Global stocks rose and the euro firmed after the weekend deal between the EU and the U.S., which set the import tariff on most EU goods at 15% - half the rate initially threatened. Asian currencies traded mixed, while the dollar index was at 97.6. The U.S.-EU trade pact is expected to reduce trade-related uncertainty in a week dominated by central bank policy decisions and the U.S.'s August 1 deadline for trading partners to strike deals. Washington has already signed similar framework accords with Britain, Japan, Indonesia and Vietnam. Meanwhile, India's trade minister told Reuters last week that the country is also hopeful of reaching a deal with the U.S. that includes 'special and preferred treatment'. Alongside these, monetary policy meetings in the U.S., Japan and other economies will be in focus this week. While the Federal Reserve is widely expected to keep rates unchanged, ANZ said it will watch for 'tweaks to the language' in the Fed's statement and Chair Jerome Powell's comments for clues on possible rate cuts in September. Over the week, traders expect the rupee to hover between 86.20 and 86.80-86.90, with a slight depreciation bias given the persistent outflows from local stocks. Foreign investors have net sold Indian equities worth about $750 million so far in July, reversing three months of inflows.
