TunM challenges PMX to hold GE to prove his mandate but instead told to spend his twilight years in peace

Focus Malaysia3 days ago
THE nation's chief gauntlet thrower is at it again – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has openly challenged his once protégé and current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to dissolve parliament and to hold snap elections.
Posting on his Facebook page, the centurion sarcastically applauded PMX for his bravery in challenging the opposition to table a motion of 'no confidence' in the Dewan Rakyat.
The twice former premier stated the reason for PMX's boldness was that the latter knew the motion would not succeed. This is simply because many parliamentarians feared reprisals if they did not back Anwar and the Madani government.
The longest serving PM in the world also claimed that there were those who would end up behind bars if they withheld support for PMX, clearly referring to UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who was controversially granted a discharge not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) for his 47 graft-linked charges.
The removal of budgetary provisions was also used as a weapon to intimidate MPs, hence the support within the Dewan Rakyat was based on fear.
'Retire for good, TunM'
To further illustrate this climate of intimidation, Dr Mahathir also claimed that UMNO members were warned against joining the Turun Anwar rally on July 26.
The elderly statesman who lost his deposit in the 2022 national polls went on to argue that PMX needs to seek legitimacy by dissolving parliament and seek a fresh mandate from the electorate.
After all, his once-disciple-turned-nemesis is only in Putrajaya because he interfered with the trial of certain political figures to garner their party's support in Parliament. Moreover, it was argued that PMX has nothing to fear as his sycophants had reported a low turnout for the Turun Anwar protest.
As expected, there were plenty of reactions to the post with it having already generated 14K likes, 1K shares and 7.3K comments at the time of writing.
One commenter pleaded with Dr Mahathir who had administered Malaysia for '22 years and 22 months' to use his influence in nation-building instead by focusing on 'economy, peace and growth'.
Others were less diplomatic, pointing out that Tun M would never be happy even if PMX won the 16th General Election (GE16) for a second term. It would then be an endless cycle of demands for national polls followed by calls for a no confidence ad nauseum, claimed one commenter.
Another called for patience as polls were just two years away. Dr Mahathir could then set a new record in Langkawi by being the oldest electoral candidate ever. He also chided the former Bersatu and Pejuang founder that he could be the first ex-premier to lose a deposit twice!
It was also pointed out that the electorate had already rejected both Dr Mahathir and his progeny in the last election when they both lost their deposits. But the centenarian's ultra-thick hide prevents him from acknowledging this.
One commenter advised Dr Mahathir to let PMX carry forward the nation in a fast-changing digital world, believing the country is on good hands. He also contended that the wealth of the latter's offspring will be untouched so long as investigations show they are not ill-gotten.
One netizen perhaps offered the best advice to the elder statesman – 'Tun's era has past, be aware that the country needs change'. – Aug 1, 2025

Parliament: Tempers flare as opposition MP issues May 13 'warning'over 13MP

KUALA LUMPUR: Tempers flared in the Dewan Rakyat today after Datuk Awang Solahuddin Hashim (PN-Pendang) warned the government about a possible repeat of the May 13, 1969 race riots. He alleged this could happen because the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) "sidelined Bumiputera interests". The uproar began when Awang interjected during opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin's debate speech on the 13MP, claiming the plan lacked development for Bumiputera while discussing on Chinese new villages. "We agree that funding for Chinese new villages is not an issue. However, the 13MP clearly lacks specific development for Bumiputera. "We know that one element leading to the May 13 incident was economic pressure on the Bumiputera community. "So, the 1MP to 12MP were created to rebalance income and the economy among these races. The 13MP has nothing (specific for Bumiputeras). "Is the government trying to revert to the May 13 incident?" Awang's remarks prompted objections from RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong), who urged Deputy Speaker Alice Lau to order a retraction. "I refer to Standing Order 36(9)(c), which prohibits words likely to incite ill-will between different races in Malaysia, or violating any conditions in the constitution or the Sedition Act, should not be used. "I heard Pendang debating and interjecting, suggesting that the 13MP is biased and does not prioritise Bumiputeras, giving priority to the Chinese community instead and making statements that will cause ill-will," Rayer said. He requested that Awang's statement be retracted, and that he apologise. Awang, however, dismissed the allegation as slander, arguing that Rayer misrepresented his words. "This is slander. You did not quote what I said. That is why even DAP members do not accept you, (and that) you lost the CEC (central executive committee) selection," he said. Awang insisted that his remarks were based on statements made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of the 13MP. Lau then intervened, asking both MPs to sit. She said a minister would address the matter and advised Rayer to file a motion if he wished to pursue it further.

Opposition moots cross-party committee to draw up effective 13MP strategies

KUALA LUMPUR: The Opposition has proposed setting up a cross-party committee to examine the targets not achieved in the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP). Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut) said the proposed committee would also look into more effective implementation strategies for the success of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) and beyond. ALSO READ: Time for a great reset with 13th Malaysia Plan "In the spirit of transparency and accountability, Tambun (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) and the Cabinet must 'walk the talk' to clarify to the public what truly happened with the unachieved targets,' he said during the debate on 13MP in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Aug 4). "There is nothing wrong with... taking a step back to reflect, assess the achievements of 12MP, and ensure we all remain grounded before new figures are presented in 13MP. "The 13MP is a national effort to shape the future of the country. It is a five-year development plan meant for all Malaysians, not just one side or another. "Whoever governs in Putrajaya must accept the reality that this plan is not the exclusive domain of any single political party; it belongs to all of us," he added. ALSO READ: 13MP must be a shared national commitment Hamzah also called on the government to clarify any compromises reached in reciprocal tariff negotiations with the United States. He said Perikatan Nasional maintains its stance that Malaysia must trade with dignity, defending its interests and sovereignty under any pressure. The 13MP targets GDP growth of between 4.5% and 5.5%, the creation of 1.2 million new jobs, and a gross national income (GNI) per capita of RM77,200, according to official government projections. ALSO READ: All 13MP projects will be monitored regularly to avoid delays However, concerns remain over the plan's viability, with questions raised about the government's fiscal capacity to fund the RM611bil allocation without placing additional strain on the public. Hamzah also asked if there was sufficient political will to implement meaningful institutional reforms, the effectiveness of proposed strategies in delivering social justice, and if the plan's indicators and targets are robust enough to guide Malaysia's progress over the next five years.

Reward whistleblowers in civil service, says deputy speaker

Published on: Monday, August 04, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 04, 2025 By: Elill Easwaran, FMT Text Size: Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Ramli Nor said without incentives, it would be difficult for the government to be informed of corruption in the public sector. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Ramli Nor has proposed that the government reward civil servants who expose corruption within their ranks. He suggested in Parliament today that incentives be provided to encourage whistleblowing within the public sector, arguing that it would be difficult otherwise for the government to be informed of corruption. 'Maybe through the government's administrative regulations or laws, we can reward civil servants who whistleblow on internal affairs,' he said. 'Reward them RM1,000 or RM2,000 – something, but covertly,' he said. Earlier, home minister Saifuddin Nasution said his ministry was taking steps to address misconduct at the country's main points of entry, including KLIA. KLIA has recently been plagued by allegations of syndicates colluding with enforcement officers to facilitate the illegal entry of travellers. Saifuddin said his ministry's steps included the implementation of an advance passenger screening system by the end of the year. He also said that 26 enforcement officers at KLIA were dismissed last year for involvement in a counter-setting syndicate, where selected individuals were allowed to pass through immigration inspection counters without undergoing proper procedures. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
