Mysterious radio pulses coming from below the Antarctic ice

Scientists have detected a series of unusual signals from beneath the ice in Antarctica.
Researchers from the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) were baffled to find the signals coming from the ground at seemingly impossible angles.
The study used a range of instruments mounted on air balloons flown above the ice-packed continent
Publishing their findings in Physical Review Letters, scientists believe the discovery suggests the existence of unknown types of particles or interactions.
The steep angles, at around 30 degrees below the ice, cannot be explained by the current understanding of particles.
Stephanie Wissel, associate professor of physics, astronomy and astrophysics, said researchers were struggling to explain how the signals reached the detectors through thousands of kilometres of rock.
She said: 'It's an interesting problem because we still don't actually have an explanation for what those anomalies are, but what we do know is that they're most likely not representing neutrinos.
Neutrinos are tiny particles found everywhere in the universe but are notoriously difficult to detect. They are often emitted by high-energy sources such as the Sun or major cosmic events like supernovas.
Wissel added: 'You have a billion neutrinos passing through your thumbnail at any moment, but neutrinos don't really interact.
'But it's a double-edged sword problem. If we detect them, it means they have travelled all this way without interacting with anything else. We could be detecting a neutrino coming from the edge of the observable universe.'
ANITA, one of the few detectors designed to spot tiny particles, was set up in Antarctica, where few objects can interfere with signals.
But analysis found the pulses discovered under the ice in Antarctica are 'anomalous' meaning they did not match standard particle physics. More Trending
The Pennsylvania State University is now developing a more powerful detector called PUEO, which could shed more light on what the signals detected are.
Wissel said the new technology would be able to pick up both neutrinos but also more anomalies, but until then, the unknown signals were 'one of these long-standing mysteries'.
She said: 'My guess is that some interesting radio propagation effect occurs near ice and also near the horizon that I don't fully understand, but we certainly explored several of those, and we haven't been able to find any of those yet either.'

A vast stone temple built 1,000 years ago by one of South America's most powerful civilizations has been uncovered in the Andes. Archaeologists discovered the temple, known as Palaspata, atop a ridge in the remote highlands southeast of Lake Titicaca, near the small community of Ocotavi in western Bolivia. The large structure was the craftsmanship of the Tiwanaku civilization, which left a mark on the world with impressive stone structures, advanced irrigation systems, and unique art and pottery before vanishing around 1000AD. Covering an area roughly the size of a city block, the site measures approximately 410 feet long by 476 feet wide. It features 15 rectangular enclosures arranged around a central courtyard, which appears to align with the solar equinox, a time when the sun rises directly over the equator and is often marked by key ritual dates in ancient cultures. The team believes more than 20,000 people may have lived here, as some buildings were constructed with stones weighing over 100 tons, showing highly organized labor and planning. 'This was not just a temple, it was a strategic hub, an entry point between the highlands and lowland trade routes,' said Dr José Capriles, lead archaeologist from Pennsylvania State University and co-author of the study. 'This was a place where people, goods, and gods all crossed paths.'. The newly discovered complex is located about 130 miles south of Tiwanaku's established historical site, on top of a hill known to local Indigenous farmers but was never explored in depth by researchers due to its unassuming location. Carbon dating revealed the site was most active between AD 630 and 950, during the period when the Tiwanaku civilization expanded its influence into the eastern valleys. 'Their society collapsed sometime around 1000 CE and was a ruin by the time the Incas conquered the Andes in the 15th century,' Dr Capriles said. 'It boasted a highly organized societal structure, leaving behind remnants of architectural monuments like pyramids, terraced temples and monoliths, most of which are distributed in sites around Lake Titicaca.' The ancient temple once featured tall, red sandstone and white quartzite stones that marked its perimeter. Though much of the original structure has collapsed, its rectangular design and astronomical alignment are still visible as its pieces still litter the ground. The central courtyard may have once held a sunken ceremonial plaza, a hallmark of Tiwanaku temples. The temple's surface was scattered with fragments of keru cups, used for drinking chicha, a traditional maize beer, during agricultural feasts and celebrations, indicating its role as a key trade hub, according to Capriles. Since maize was not grown locally but in the Cochabamba valleys, unlike the high-altitude temple site, this highlights the temple's significance in enabling access to diverse goods, including food, and linking different culinary traditions, he added. 'The archaeological findings at Palaspata are significant because they highlight a crucial aspect of our local heritage that had been completely overlooked,' said Justo Ventura Guarayo, mayor of the municipality of Caracollo, where the site is located. 'This discovery is vital for our community.' The Palaspata complex had remained undetected by archaeologists until recently, when they spotted unusual geometric shapes in satellite photos. Researchers then used an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, and 3D imaging techniques to confirm the presence of a man-made structure. 'Because the features are very faint, we blended various satellite images,' said Dr Capriles. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, (named after an astronomer who studied galaxies), has this week released the first images to the public from the ground-breaking camera which is attached to an 8.4-metre telescope. One such galactic snapshot includes this staggering image of galaxies in the constellation of Virgo. In a truly remarkable picture, we can see an estimated 10 million galaxies, some of them very much like our own Milky Way. In just 10 hours of observations, the camera has also sighted 2,104 previously undetected asteroids in our solar system, thankfully, none of them a threat to Earth. The 3,200 megapixel camera measures 5.4 ft x 9.8 ft and has the capability of capturing an area approximately three times that of the Moon. As a comparison, the resolution of the camera is 67 times more than that of an iPhone 16 Pro. When viewing the night sky, it's always best to try and achieve good views of all horizons away from artificial light such as street lights. Equally important is gaining height to view the sky, such as from the top of a mountain. The advantages for observatories at such high elevation are manyfold, including firstly being above the clouds; away from light pollution, and observing through a thinner layer of atmosphere. As we know, the stars themselves don't actually twinkle. The light generated by the stars has to pass through the Earth's atmosphere which distorts it, making the stars appear to shimmer. The higher up you are, the less distortion occurs. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is soon to start a decade-long vigil of observing the heavens, with the camera capable of snapping an image of the night sky once every 40 seconds for eight to 12 hour periods every night. One of its main tasks will be to study the formation of our own galaxy in which we live. Some of the data collected will be sent to scientists in the UK. On the evening of Sunday, June 29, there's an opportunity to spot a lovely trio of celestial objects. First of all seek out the Moon, which will be low above the western horizon after sunset. To the left of the Moon, you'll find the planet Mars, and to the right, the bright star Regulus in the constellation of Leo. On the evening of Thursday, July 3 at 8.55pm, the Earth will be at its furthest point from the Sun. Known as 'aphelion', the Earth will 94,502,714 miles away from the Sun. In the morning sky on Friday, July 4, the Pleiades star cluster, (Seven Sisters), will be positioned above and to the left of Venus. Lying almost in a line between the two is the planet Uranus which can be seen using binoculars or a small telescope. It may take some finding, but use the Pleiades and Venus as a guide. Health experts are singing praises for "golden milk", a concoction made by adding a spoonful of turmeric to a glass of milk. The health-boosting properties of golden milk can be attributed largely to curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric. This powerful compound has such potent anti-inflammatory effects that some research equates it to pharmaceutical drugs. ‌ In addition to its anti-inflammatory prowess, as underscored in this research paper in the medical journal Foods, curcumin also enhances the body's antioxidant capacity. It effectively combats oxidative damage and free radicals, which can accelerate ageing and contribute to chronic diseases. ‌ Curcumin plays a pivotal role in mitigating oxidative stress and harmonising various bodily functions. It can decrease intracellular lipid peroxidation and bolster the body's antioxidant capabilities, potentially leading to increased longevity. Research even suggests that curcumin could aid in treating Alzheimer's disease (AD) as it helps shield the hippocampus, the brain region responsible for learning and memory functions. A study by Brazilian scientists, published in the journal Current Neuropharmacology, concluded: "The administration of curcumin demonstrates to be effective for the treatment of AD. These studies help to elucidate the mechanism of action of curcumin, where they suggest that it partially reverses the neurotoxic and behavioural damages in animals with AD and other cell lines." Golden milk recipes often incorporate curcumin, cinnamon and ginger, all of which are known for their potent antioxidant properties. Research has shown that ginger can enhance brain function by improving reaction time and memory, while animal studies have suggested that it may protect against age-related decline in brain function. Both ginger and cinnamon have been linked to lower blood sugar levels. A scientific study proposed that a small daily intake of ginger could potentially reduce haemoglobin A1C levels (a long-term measure of blood sugar control) by up to 10 per cent. Research also suggests that the spices found in golden milk may have anti-cancer properties. One study, published in the journal Mini-Reviews in Medicinal Chemistry, discovered that 6-gingerol, a compound abundant in raw ginger, exhibits anti-cancer characteristics. ‌ Another study, conducted by scientists in the US, posited that curcumin has the capacity to kill isolated cancer cells in laboratory tests. It might also inhibit the growth of new blood vessels in tumours, thereby limiting their proliferation, according to Gloucestershire Live. Golden milk could also be beneficial for brain health. Research from Iran indicated that curcumin might boost levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a substance that aids in the formation of new brain connections and promotes the growth of brain cells. ‌ There is also some evidence suggesting that curcumin, a compound found in turmeric, could help ease symptoms of depression, as per a study published in the Scientific World Journal. However, further research is required. For those who aren't fans of strong spices, fear not – the taste of this drink has been likened to chai tea or a chai latte. Its main purpose is to provide comfort rather than stimulation, making it a perfect evening beverage. The basic recipe of turmeric and milk can be customised with various additions to suit your palate and nutritional needs. Consider enhancing your drink with other spices like nutmeg, which is rich in magnesium, or sweeten it with a dash of maple syrup or honey. ‌ Adding a few grinds of black pepper can unlock additional health benefits. This common table spice contains piperine, a natural compound that boosts the absorption of curcumin by 2,000 per cent, according to this report. There are numerous recipes available online for this naturally sweet beverage. Traditionally, turmeric milk is made with cow's milk, but you can substitute with alternatives such as oat, soy, or almond milk. Once you've gathered the base ingredients, you can start experimenting to find your perfect blend of golden milk. Here's a simple method to try at home: Pour 250ml of your preferred milk into a saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat Add in 1tsp of ground turmeric, a pinch of black pepper and any other spices and sweeteners you fancy Add to the mixture and let it simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavours to blend and fully mature Pour into a mug, let it cool slightly, then drink To turn your warm turmeric milk into a latte, gently whisk it with a hand whisk or a milk frother over low heat to 'froth' the milk once it's in the saucepan. Some people enjoy the drink chilled, similar to an iced coffee, as there is no evidence that serving it over ice diminishes any health benefits.
