Amin Lakhani conferred with Tamgha-e-Imtiaz
President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday conferred Tamgha-e-Imtiaz on Amin Lakhani, the honorary consul general of Singapore, in recognition of his meritorious services to Pakistan, and for strengthening the relations between the two countries.
Lakhani received the award from the president at the awards ceremony held at Aiwan Sadr on the occasion of Pakistan Day. For 35 years, Lakhani, as honorary consul general, has been playing important role in promoting relations between Pakistan and Singapore.
Besides, Lakhani has represented Pakistan in many fields, including economic, cultural and education. Because of his efforts, bilateral trade and business increased and visa issuance for the Pakistanis became easier. His efforts led to the issuance of Singaporean visa to 200,000 Pakistanis.

Shah mentioned that Sindh has always led from the front and will continue to do so. Commenting on potential cabinet changes, he added, 'When I decide to make changes, I will and everyone will know.' In support, Governor Sindh Kamran Khan Tessori met with a delegation of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), led by Senior Vice President Saquib Fayyaz Magoon, to discuss preparations for Independence Day. Tessori emphasized the importance of business community participation in the 'Marka-e-Haq' campaign and said it is a collective responsibility to celebrate the occasion in a dignified manner. The FPCCI delegation assured full support and active involvement in the planned events.

Virtual assets adoption: Govt holds key meeting with banks, exchange firms
KARACHI: The federal government has accelerated its efforts for virtual asset adoption, holding a high-level meeting in Islamabad on Tuesday to engage banks and exchange companies with the emerging regulatory framework. Sources told Business Recorder that a joint meeting of the exchange companies, bank's exchange companies and gem and jewellery representatives was conducted to brief the development related to crypto currency and virtual assets in Pakistan. The meeting was chaired by SBP Governor Jameel Ahmed and attended by CEO of the Pakistan Crypto Council (PCC) Bilal bin Saqib, who also serves as the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on blockchain and cryptocurrency. Aimed at embracing emerging digital currencies in alignment with global developments, in February, the Ministry of Finance announced the formation of a 'Pakistan Crypto Council' and Bilal bin Saqib was appointed CEO. Later, on July 9, 2025, the federal government announced the formal approval of the 'Virtual Assets Act, 2025,' following endorsements from the Federal Cabinet, the Prime Minister, and the President of Pakistan. Pakistan establishes Digital Assets Authority to regulate crypto, blockchain Virtual Assets Act, 2025 establishes the Pakistan Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority (PVARA), an autonomous federal body empowered to license, regulate, and supervise entities dealing in virtual assets. The Authority has been granted comprehensive powers to ensure transparency, compliance, financial integrity, and the prevention of illicit activities, in alignment with international standards including those of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). During the meeting, Bilal Bin Saqib delivered a detailed presentation on cryptocurrency legalization in Pakistan, highlighting that a significant number of Pakistanis are already investing in digital assets. He urged representatives of exchange companies, banks, and the jewellery sector to support this important initiative, stating that Pakistan, in consultation with all stakeholders, has all set for digital asset adoption and economic modernization in line with international best practices. He described it as a game-changing move for the country and emphasized the need to support the government, noting that it will ultimately benefit Pakistan. Industry sources revealed during the meeting, exchange companies and banks were informed that they would be granted licenses to operate in the cryptocurrency sector. It may be mentioned here that central banks around the world are actively exploring the potential use and implementation of digital currencies. SBP is also working on the same patron and SBP Governor Jameel Ahmad, earlier this month in an international conference revealed that the SBP is preparing to launch a pilot project for a digital currency and is finalizing legislation to regulate virtual assets. May 9 trials: PTI seeks SC review
ISLAMABAD: The opposition leader in National Assembly Omar Ayub called on the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Yahya Afridi on Tuesday to intervene in what he described as 'constitutional and procedural violations' surrounding the ongoing trials linked to the May 9, 2023 unrest. In a detailed letter addressed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Ayub, who is also a senior leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), framed his appeal both as a political leader and as an individual directly affected by the legal proceedings. He characterised the trials, which are taking place in multiple cities including Lahore, Faisalabad, and Sargodha, as 'rushed' and 'unfair,' warning that such processes undermine public trust in the country's judiciary. 'The integrity of the country's judicial process is under grave threat,' he wrote, alleging that Anti-Terrorism Courts (ATCs) were holding sessions late into the night, sometimes until 2 or 3 am. 'This is neither justice delayed nor justice served – this is justice crushed and buried under the weight of exhaustion, coercion, and haste,' he lamented. Ayub cited numerous Supreme Court verdicts underscoring the necessity of transparency, fairness, and due process. Quoting the landmark ruling in State vs Ziaul Haq (1975), he emphasised, 'Justice must not only be done, it must manifestly and undoubtedly be seen to be done.' The opposition leader expressed deep concern over what he described as a 'systematic' erosion of legal rights for PTI members, accusing authorities of prosecutorial overreach, filing fabricated complaints, and using coercive tactics. He also raised alarms about restrictions placed on defendants' access to legal counsel of their choice, citing Article 10A of the Constitution, and alleged that courts were frequently denying adjournments and appointing state lawyers without consent. Highlighting violations of constitutional protections, including Articles 4, 10A, 14, 19A, and 25, Ayub warned that such practices contravened not only national law but also international standards, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. He likened the secretive nature of the trials to the notorious 'Star Chambers' of 17th-century England, underscoring the opacity and lack of public scrutiny. He called on Justice Afridi to take urgent corrective action, including a comprehensive review of all May 9 trials to ensure adherence to fair trial norms and enforcing reasonable court hours. He also urged safeguarding the right to counsel, expanding media access, and investigating allegations of prosecutorial and police misconduct. He also urged reopening trials concluded under questionable conditions. Concluding his letter, Ayub invoked a famous quote from former US Chief Justice Earl Warren: 'The treatment a government gives its citizens when accused of crime reveals the very essence of justice in that society.' He reminded the Chief Justice Afridi of his constitutional duty as the 'guardian of the Constitution' to ensure that courts serve justice rather than political interests.
