US Justice fires several more employees from Trump investigation team, sources say
US Attorney-General Pam Bondi has reportedly fired more Justice Department employees who worked for Special Counsel Jack Smith to investigate President Donald Trump.
WASHINGTON - US Attorney-General Pam Bondi has fired several more Justice Department employees who worked for Special Counsel Jack Smith to investigate President Donald Trump's retention of classified records and efforts to overturn the 2020 election, according to five people familiar with the matter.
About 20 lawyers, support staff and US Marshals who worked on Mr Smith's probe were terminated on July 11, according to one of the sources.
At least two of the people fired were prosecutors who most recently worked in other US Attorneys' offices in Florida and North Carolina, three of the sources told Reuters.
The Justice Department since January has been dismissing employees who worked on
matters involving Mr Trump or his supporters, citing Mr Trump's executive powers under the US Constitution.
A spokesperson for Mr Smith did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Fourteen attorneys who worked on Smith's team were fired on Jan 27 because of work on cases against Mr Trump, becoming some of the department's earliest employees who were dismissed. Department leadership told those attorneys in termination letters that they could not be trusted to carry out Mr Trump's agenda because of their work on Mr Smith's probe.
Including the people fired on July 11, at least 37 people who worked on Mr Smith's team have been terminated since Mr Trump took office on Jan 20.
The Justice Department in recent months has also fired people who handled casework involving defendants who
stormed the US Capitol on Jan 6, 2021, in an attempt to block Congress from certifying President Joe Biden's 2020 election win.
In late June, three prosecutors, one of whom had worked on cases involving the Proud Boys, were fired. Earlier this month, Ms Bondi also fired a career veteran of the department who served as a spokesperson for the US Attorney's Office in Washington.
In late January, the Justice Department also fired probationary prosecutors who had worked on Jan 6 cases.
Mr Smith brought two criminal cases against Mr Trump in 2023, accusing him of illegally retaining national security documents and plotting to overturn his 2020 election defeat.
Both were dropped before Mr Trump returned to office. REUTERS

US appeals court temporarily blocks ending Afghans' protected status
WASHINGTON - A U.S. appeals court has for now blocked the Trump administration from removing the temporary protective status of thousands of Afghans in the United States, court documents showed on Monday. An administrative stay on the termination of temporary protected status for Afghans will remain until July 21, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit said in an order granting a request from immigration advocacy organization CASA. The group had filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to challenge the terminations of the temporary protected status for Afghans and Cameroonians announced by the Trump administration in April. CASA had filed for an emergency motion for a stay on Monday, when the protected status for Afghans was scheduled to be terminated. The protected status for Cameroonians is set to end on August 4, according to the court document. The DHS did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In April when the Trump administration terminated temporary deportation protections for thousands of Afghans and Cameroonians, the department had said conditions in Afghanistan and Cameroon no longer merited the protected status. The Trump administration has until 11:59 p.m. ET on Wednesday (0359 GMT, Thursday) to respond. The U.S. evacuated more than 82,000 Afghans from Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover in 2021, including more than 70,000 who entered the U.S. with temporary "parole," which allowed legal entry for a period of two years. Texas flood death toll rises to 131 as new storms loom

AUSTIN, Texas - The official tally of storm-related deaths across Texas rose to 131 on July 14 as authorities warned of yet another round of heavy rains 10 days after a Hill Country flash flood that transformed the Guadalupe River into a killer torrent. A National Weather Service flood watch forecasting heavy downpours of up to half a foot of rain was posted until July 15 morning for a wide swath of central Texas extending from the Rio Grande east to San Antonio and Austin. The advisory included Kerr County and other parts of Texas Hill Country along the Guadalupe still recovering from the July 4 flood disaster, which ravaged the county seat of Kerrville and a riverside Christian summer camp for girls in the nearby town of Hunt. Riverfront residents as well as search teams still combing the banks of the waterway were advised to seek higher ground until the latest danger had passed. The search for additional victims along the Guadalupe was likewise suspended due to flood concerns on July 13. Texas Governor Greg Abbott on July 14 said storms had claimed at least 131 lives in Texas since July 4, the bulk of those deaths in and around Kerrville, up from 120 reported on July 11. He said 97 people were still listed as missing in the greater Kerrville area, down from the 160-plus who authorities said were unaccounted for last week.
