Inside the redesign that will make you actually want to use Nextdoor

Of all the social media platforms chasing users and flooding the internet with content, Nextdoor has always been a bit of an oddball. Rather than offering Instagram-style influence or Twitter-style followers or even Facebook-style endless engagement, Nextdoor has been focused on the earnest goal of connecting neighbors with each other.
Since its founding in 2011, Nextdoor's purpose has been to be the digital window through which people can better interact with their own neighbors and neighborhoods, online and in real life.
Today, Nextdoor is relaunching and unveiling a comprehensive redesign that positions it to actually make that possible.
The new Nextdoor is moving away from its message-board past toward a more informative offering of geographically relevant real-time alerts, local news from vetted publishers, and a more accessible pool of neighborhood knowledge undergirded by artificial intelligence. The type of stuff you may have seen on Nextdoor over the past 14 years—notices about lost or found pets, questions about whether or not anyone else's power is out, that cranky neighbor who posts a bit too often—will largely be replaced by a feed of information that prioritizes relevance and utility.
It's the first major update to the platform since its founding. Internally, Nextdoor executives are calling this a relaunch of both the product and the company as a whole.
Founder returns
The relaunch of Nextdoor has been in the works since last fall, a few months after founder Nirav Tolia returned to the role of CEO after five years away from the day-to-day operations of the company. Tolia tells Fast Company that he came back to Nextdoor with a renewed enthusiasm for its mission of connecting neighbors, but also a clearer view of how the platform had struggled to meet its main goal.
'The potential of the Nextdoor idea had not been realized by the existing product,' Tolia says. 'And the reason for that is that it's a very hard problem. Local word of mouth, which is really what Nextdoor is all about, is one of the last things remaining to be digitized.'
That challenge hasn't stopped Nextdoor from continuing to grow, however. According to the company's end-of-2024 report, weekly active users of the platform grew 10% year over year, to 46.1 million in the fourth quarter, and the company made $247.3 million in revenue in 2024, up 13% from 2023. Despite these positive numbers, Tolia sees room for improvement. Others see the relaunch as a defining moment for the company . . . and a gamble.
'Our biggest challenge with the existing Nextdoor is that the content is not high-quality enough, it's not timely enough, and it's not comprehensive enough,' Tolia says. That's led the company to move away from solely user-generated content to more of a user-augmented content approach, supported by geotargeted news and alert feeds from credible outside sources. For the relaunch, Nextdoor has partnered with 3,500 news outlets to provide feeds of local news, and the platform will also automatically load real-time alerts from more than 5,000 local public safety, emergency, and utility agencies.
It's also integrating AI into one of the more quintessential parts of the Nextdoor experience, which is neighbors seeking or providing information about local services, businesses, and events. The new AI-backed search feature draws from 14 years' worth of posts to answer user questions on things like restaurant recommendations, contractors, and family-friendly activities. Rather than just asking a question in the form of a post and hoping for a useful response, users can ask their question in the search field and get instant results.
Speeding up this feedback loop is a key part of making Nextdoor more useful to people, Tolia says. Combining neighborhood knowledge and word-of-mouth recommendations with vetted information about news and local events could make Nextdoor into what Tolia calls a 'first-screen app.'
New user experience, new user behavior
A change this big requires users to shift how they interact with Nextdoor. Ahead of the relaunch project getting started, Tolia hired Georg Petschnigg as Nextdoor's chief design officer. A seasoned user experience designer, Petschnigg is best known for his time as head of product design at The New York Times, where he led a comprehensive redesign of the newspaper's app. For Nextdoor, he's bringing a news-centric sensibility and a focus on getting people the information they want as quickly as possible.
Given Nextdoor's focus on neighborhoods, the main entry point for content on the platform is the user's location, which gets prominent placement in the top-left corner of the new Nextdoor app. 'The most important thing we want to signal is that this is about your neighborhood,' Petschnigg says.
A tap in that upper-left corner takes users to a neighborhood map, which displays real-time alerts in the area, including extreme weather, fires, power outages, and police activity. If something important is happening that directly affects a user or their location, like a public safety emergency or a power outage, that information will be displayed automatically on a user's home screen.
Other times, the home screen will be a mix of local news and posts from neighbors, all geotargeted for specific relevance in a given location. 'Up until now, neighbors had to report on what's happening, and they will do that,' Petschnigg says. 'But being able to bring in these verified information sources really supercharges the dynamic on the platform.'
To spur active engagement, users can comment on the news items in this main feed. To try to avoid the cesspool that user comments sections can become, Nextdoor is using AI to create prompt questions that direct users to add their own reactions or information about the news shown in the feed. 'We want to encourage the habit to discuss the news or advance the news,' Petschnigg says.
It's unusual for a design to put news and user commentary all on the same level, Petschnigg says, but he's hoping the focus on new stories that are relevant to a given neighborhood will become a starting point for deeper information sharing. 'We're hearing people saying they are interested in the news, but also that the conversation around the news is important,' he adds. 'Framing news as information that exists to serve a community is really, really important, and we want to do that right off the bat.'
The other parts of the relaunched Nextdoor platform can be accessed by a simple floating navigation area at the bottom of the screen—an approach that's the basis of Apple's recently announced Liquid Glass user interface. Petschnigg says Nextdoor's UX was in the works long before Apple made this reveal, but the similarities are validating. 'We started understanding that if you want to have a user interface that lets the content breathe, you need to pare back the footprint of your navigational elements,' he says.
The floating navigation bar makes the home screen and its news feed, the search function, and local recommendations (or 'faves') the three most important parts of the new Nextdoor. This user interface, and the platform's emphasis on bringing in reliable and vetted information sources, will redirect Nextdoor from being a free-for-all message board into something more deliberately informative.
Focusing on the local—through alerts, geotargeted news, and an AI-assisted knowledge bank—is the way Tolia thinks Nextdoor can stand out from other social media platforms. 'There are only about a dozen apps that we rely on every single day. The fact that none of those dozen apps is related to our local life is just kind of mind-boggling to me,' Tolia says. 'Given that 30% of Americans are now working from home, where we live is more important than it's ever been. So I think our opportunity is bigger than it's ever been as well.'

Shares of Intel jumped roughly 3.8% in extended trading. The Santa Clara, California-based chipmaker disclosed the layoff goals as it forecast steeper third-quarter losses than Wall Street estimates on Thursday, despite anticipating higher sales than analysts expected while new CEO Lip-Bu Tan steers the company through a historic turnaround. The outlook comes as investors pushed Intel's shares up 14% this year, in the hopes of Tan undoing years of strategic mistakes that have exempted the company from the AI boom dominated by Nvidia. The company said it expects a third-quarter loss of 24 cents per share, steeper than estimates of losses of 18 cents per share, according to data from LSEG. Intel expects revenue of $12.6 billion to $13.6 billion for the September quarter, with a midpoint of $13.1 billion that was higher than analysts' average estimate of $12.65 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Growth in the PC market is uncertain after customers pulled shipments forward to the first half of the year amid ongoing trade negotiations, analysts have said. Shipments of PCs rose 6.5% in the June quarter according to data from International Data Corporation. While semiconductors are currently exempt from U.S. President Donald Trump's sweeping global tariffs, Intel and its fellow chipmakers are facing customers who are reluctant about spending commitments amid widespread macroeconomic uncertainty. Intel's second-quarter revenue for the period ended June 28 was flat at $12.9 billion, snapping a four-quarter streak of sales declines. The result beat estimates of $11.92 billion, according to LSEG data. CEO Tan has been focusing on a next-generation chipmaking process called 14A to win big external customers, shifting away from 18A, a technology that his predecessor Pat Gelsinger had spent billions of dollars to develop, Reuters has reported. Tan has also focused on streamlining the organization and reducing its workforce. In April, Intel agreed to sell a 51% stake in its Altera programmable chip business for $4.46 billion. Intel said job cuts contributed to restructuring costs of $1.9 billion in the second quarter. It recorded June quarter adjusted losses of 10 cents per share, compared with estimates of a profit of 1 cent per share. Dive Brief: San Francisco Federal Credit Union has agreed to acquire Oakland, California-based Summit Bank in an all-cash transaction, the companies said Tuesday. The transaction will add three Summit branches in Oakland, Emeryville and Walnut Creek to the $1.3 billion-asset credit union's seven-branch footprint across San Francisco and San Mateo counties. The deal — expected to close in the first quarter of 2026 — awaits regulatory and shareholder approvals. Dive Insight: The transaction would be the seventh whole-bank purchase by a credit union this year and the second such announcement in California in 2025. In January, Oceanside-based Frontwave Credit Union agreed to buy El Centro-based Community Valley Bank in an all-cash transaction valued at $56.4 million. San Francisco FCU's latest move would bolster the credit union's financial solutions for its customers with enhanced digital tools and offer broader commercial services for member businesses while scaling its operations in the Bay Area with a total of 10 branches, according to the press release. 'Community is central to our mission, and as we grow, we look forward to continuing to contribute to the economic vitality of Bay Area communities,' said Ray Shams, president and CEO of San Francisco FCU, in a statement. 'We are committed to helping our members achieve their financial goals while fostering strong local partnerships.' San Francisco FCU, established in 1964, is a not-for-profit organization serving nearly 47,000 members. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. The California credit union plans to retain the bank employees, to offer their knowledge of the East Bay and to ensure a smooth transition, according to the frequently asked questions section of San Francisco FCU. Founded in 1982, Summit Bank, the oldest woman-founded bank in California, has roughly $4.5 million in assets and caters to medium-sized businesses, professionals, and individuals, according to the press release. 'As we combine Summit Bank with San Francisco Federal Credit Union I am convinced that our customers will continue to see the can-do philosophy as our staff will continue into this larger financial institution that has the same values of Summit Bank,' Shirley Nelson, chairman and CEO of Summit Bank, said in a statement Tuesday. 'While it has been difficult to let go of something that I started over 43 years ago, I still plan to be involved supporting Summit Foundation.' In 2024, credit union-bank deals reached a record of 22 whole-bank acquisition announcements. Although this year's number is off pace compared to last year, Michael Bell, a partner at the law firm Honigman, said there are more deals in the works. 'The pace will pick up now,' Bell said in an email, adding this year's deal announcements might break or get close to that of last year's. In May, Idaho Falls-based Frontier Credit Union's proposal to buy First Citizens Bank of Butte marked its expansion into Montana. Credit union-bank deals irk trade groups like the Independent Community Bankers of America, which argues that credit unions' tax exemption allows them to offer a higher purchase price for small or struggling banks than bank competitors. San Francisco FCU's deal drew the attention of ICBA President and CEO Rebeca Romero Rainey, who noted that since 2010, credit unions with more than $1 billion in assets have been involved in more than 80% of acquisitions. She voiced similar concerns when the first California credit union-bank deal was announced in January. 'Credit unions have a mandate from Congress to serve people of modest means, though we repeatedly see growth-obsessed credit unions exploit their federal tax exemption to acquire taxpaying community banks and widen their already-massive footprints,' Romero Rainey said in a statement Tuesday. 'Policymakers must uphold market choice for small businesses and consumers alike by addressing taxpayer-subsidized consolidation of the financial services landscape by billion-dollar credit unions,' she added. Startup Claims Its Fusion Reactor Concept Can Turn Cheap Mercury Into Gold

Keep checking those gold prices—scientists have more news about the coveted metal. An energy startup claims it has the recipe for modern-day alchemy: turning mercury into gold inside a nuclear fusion reactor. Last week, Marathon Fusion, a San Francisco-based energy startup, submitted a preprint detailing an action plan for synthesizing gold particles via nuclear transmutation—essentially the process of turning one element into another by tweaking its nucleus. The paper, which has yet to undergo peer review, argues that the proposed system would offer a new revenue stream from all the new gold being produced, in addition to other economic and technological benefits. Specifically, the proposed method involves introducing mercury-198 into a fusion reactor and bombarding it with neutrons until it transforms into mercury-197, a much more unstable isotope of mercury. Because of its instability, mercury-197 decays into gold-197, the only stable isotope of gold. This process takes about 64 hours and relies on the steady release of high-energy neutrons popping out of the fusion of the hydrogen isotopes deuterium and tritium. A special 'blanket configuration' in the tokamak—a donut-shaped machine that uses magnetic fields to confine plasma—would separate gold production from the fusion plant's energy generation, according to the study authors. As a result, gold production wouldn't impinge on the plant's primary function to generate nuclear energy. This setup would allow the plant to 'simultaneously meet the fuel cycle requirements of [deuterium and tritium] fusion and achieve economically valuable production of gold,' the authors wrote in the paper. Assuming this is all feasible—and this remains a big theoretical assumption—reactors using this approach could produce around 11,000 pounds (5,000 kilograms) of gold every year per gigawatt of electricity generated, according to Marathon Fusion's chief executive, Kyle Schiller, and chief technology officer, Adam Rutkowski. To put this into perspective, around 3,000 metric tons of gold are mined each year. In an interview with the Financial Times, the two representatives stated that this 'byproduct' could double the revenue of the plant. But it's worth noting that the same process would likely result in the production of unstable and potentially radioactive isotopes of gold. As such, Rutkowski admitted, the gold would have to be stored for 14 to 18 years before it could be labeled radiation-safe. Experts who have (unofficially) reviewed the study claim the proposal presents thought-provoking points that warrant further discussion. 'On paper it looks great, and everyone so far that I talk to remains intrigued and excited,' Ahmed Diallo, a plasma physicist at the U.S. Department of Energy's national laboratory at Princeton who wasn't involved in the study, told the Financial Times. But all that shines is not gold—especially given the fact that, again, the paper has yet to be peer reviewed and does not offer any empirical demonstrations of the proposed setup. If this company is successful, however, perhaps we'll finally have achieved modern alchemy without giant particle accelerators. Although, in my opinion, effectively achieving alchemy through the use of giant accelerators is still pretty cool.
