Murdered sheep farmer remembered as loving relative and proud Kerry man
Mourners packed Holy Cross Church in the town on Saturday morning to pay their final respects to the 56-year-old and support his family.
His remains were brought into the church in a wood box topped with sheep's wool.
Speaking on behalf of the family ahead of the funeral service, Mr Gaine's cousin Eoghan Clarke remembered him as a 'proud Kerry man and an even prouder Kenmare man'.
He said he will be missed terribly to applause from those gathered.
In his homily, parish priest George Hayes described Kenmare as a place of enchanting beauty, but said into their 'peaceful, idyllic, sylvan existence' recently came something terrible.
'Over these weeks, since Michael went missing, we've asked so many questions – and, in life, sometimes, there are no answers,' he told mourners.
'But in the best tradition of Irish funerals, today is a day for recovering the dignity of Michael Gaine.
'Today we recover Michael's dignity because, today, we speak Michael's name with love … we gather to acknowledge Michael as someone who loved much and was much loved.'
He urged: 'Let's not give in to hatred and bitterness … let's strive for justice and fairness.
'Winter will pass. Spring will come again. There will be better days, we will continue to honour Mike and speak Mike's name with love, and may Mike now rest in God's eternal care and God's eternal peace.'
Earlier, Mr Clarke said his cousin was known for his incredible work ethic, personality and humour, and was a loving son, sibling and uncle.
He recalled his passion for rallying, farming, current affairs, holidays and music.
'As we all know, Michael was generous. Incredibly generous. He had time for everyone and would chip in to help any time and any place,' he said.
'Michael seemed to always find the time to do the work of three men on his own farm, help out friends, family and neighbours, keep up to speed on current affairs and enjoy himself.
'He loved life, he always made the most of it and he truly lived every single moment. Whether you met him during lambing or while on a trip away to a car show or rally event, he always had the iconic twinkle in his eye – the 'I'm delighted to see you', 'I'm in great form', 'let's go and enjoy ourselves' glint in his eye.'
He also said that Mr Gaine's wife Janice and sisters knew his soft caring side.
'Caring and affectionate. Kind and considerate. He was not afraid to show his emotions. He was also brave, fearless and strong,' he said.
'We will all miss Michael terribly. I know I'll miss our phone calls the most, as well as that happy feeling that Michael gave you when you were with him.
'He was always the glue that held the Rally of the Lakes weekend together and I will always look back very fondly on our adventures to the best spectating spots in Kerry.'
Mr Gaine was initially reported missing having been last seen in Kenmare on March 20.
Extensive searches were carried out with assistance at one stage from the Irish Defence Forces.
On April 29, gardai announced the missing person probe had been upgraded to a homicide investigation.
Partial human remains were found on Mr Gaine's land on May 17 which were identified as belonging to the missing farmer.
A man aged in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of Mr Gaine's murder on May 19.
He was held for questioning for one day before being released without charge from Killarney garda station.

Fox News slams Keir Starmer's leadership in UK as they issue urgent 'Big Brother is watching' alert
A Fox News correspondent compared the UK to George Orwell's novel 1984 as they said "Big Brother is Watching" Fox News has aired an urgent alert in a mortifying dig at Keir Starmer's leadership. The American news channel caused some controversy when they declared "Big Brother is Watching" on Sunday night's Fox Business show, The Bottom Line. This is a reference to George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984, where the Ministry of Truth is a government agency responsible for propaganda, historical revisionism, and manipulating information to align with the Party's narrative. The Fox News anchor declared: "1984 called and it wants its Ministry of Truth back. "The UK has created an elite police unit known as The National Intelligence Investigations Team dedicated to monitoring anti-migrant social media posts. Leaders claim its purpose is to detect early signs of potential unrest." The channel then showed images of ongoing protests in Epping as tensions rise over migrants being housed in hotels within the area, the Express reports. The report comes amid increased worries surrounding free speech and growing disorder in the UK. An elite team of police officers are set to watch over social media for anti-migrant sentiment amid fears of summer riots. Detectives will be taken from forces across the country to team up in a new investigation that will identify early signs of potential civil unrest. During Donald Trump's visit to the UK last week, Keir Starmer assured the press that we have had "free speech here for a very long time and we're very proud of that". The Fox News correspondents were joined by Public News Founder Michael Shellenberger. Host Guy Benson said: "Michael, it's true that the UK and the West has a fairly robust tradition when it comes to free speech but i'm not so sure that's true anymore. "There is story after story about people being thrown behind bars in the UK - even for tweets they have deleted with longer prison sentences than people who have committed actual physical violent crimes." Michael replied: "It's an incredible story. There is a woman that has been in prison for 31 months which is four months longer than a child rapist. All she did was have a tweet up for four hours that she ended up taking down. "This is a sweeping crackdown on free speech in Great Britain. We have not seen anything like this for hundreds of years. Keep in mind they were arresting 30 people a day for wrong speech in Britain before this. "Now, they have a special police task force to constantly monitor social media including X formerly Twitter and they can stop content based on age verification." He added: "They are not going to allow people to criticise mass immigration. They're going to call it Islamphobia. A hate crime and prevent it. George Orwell perfectly predicted this in 1984 when he wrote his book in the mid 40s." Michael went on to explain that as the UK continues to increase social media surveillance it is effectively taking place worldwide including within the EU and the US. He explained: "It's happening everywhere and has accelerated since Trump was elected. So it's the EU, it's Britain, it's Ireland - they want to read your private text messages. Canada, Brazil - the strategy here is to make it so the social media companies will censor this content for everybody." Michael also alleged the heavy censorship that has been politicised due to the growing support of right-wing parties. Further protests have erupted across the UK as migrants are relocated to more affluent London areas. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! A spate of demonstrations has occurred close to the Britannia Hotel in Canary Wharf amid proposals for it to accommodate migrants. Men, thought to be asylum seekers, were captured on film entering the hotel from a bus in the early hours of Saturday, clutching what appeared to be brown envelopes and dressed in similar attire. A representative for Tower Hamlets Council has earlier verified that the Britannia Hotel is set to "provide temporary accommodation for asylum seekers".

Former councillor is killed in horror crash on road he campaigned to be made safer - as lorry driver, 42, is arrested in connection with his death
A road safety campaigner has been killed in a crash on the very stretch of highway he called to be made safer. John Michael Duggan, 81, died in hospital following a crash on the A19 near Riccall, North Yorkshire, at around 10.30am on Friday morning. The driver of a white DAF skip lorry, a 42-year-old man from York, who collided with Mr Duggan's black Nissan Juke as the former councillor joined the A19 from York Road, has been arrested. Mr Duggan was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by air ambulance with serious injuries, but was tragically pronounced dead a short while later. The A19, which runs from York in the north to Selby in the south, has national speed limit restrictions at the junction with York Road, where drivers join at a 'give way' junction. Selby MP Keir Mather said Mr Duggan, a former Selby District Council and North Yorkshire County Council councillor, had campaigned for better road safety in Riccall. In 2019, Mr Duggan campaigned for a roundabout on the A19 to help prevent crashes after a collision which saw two people taken to hospital. An £850,000 road safety scheme to install the roundabout was scheduled to be built in 2007, but was subsequently axed with funds reallocated. In 2019, Mr Duggan said: 'The road is a lot busier than it was then, and accidents show people are trying to get out there but can't. 'It's quite common between Selby and York, the morning rush hour is car after car in both directions and you have to wait sometimes more than five minutes before you can get space and get out, it's such a busy road.' Speaking after Mr Duggan's death, Keir Mather MP said: 'This tragedy makes awfully clear the need for road safety improvements at both A19 junctions in Riccall. 'When I've canvassed or held drop-in events in Riccall this has always been what's come up. 'Anyone who uses either of the Riccall/A19 junctions knows that they feel unsafe, and that's what I've tried to impress on North Yorkshire Council previously that we need a new roundabout or at the very least a speed reduction. 'I will redouble my efforts to make North Yorkshire Council think again about the necessity of road safety improvements in Riccall. 'I've heard from so many people who agree and I've made contact with the parish council to discuss next steps - we'll only achieve this by working together. 'The most important thing in the next few days is that John's family are given the time to grieve and reflect on his memory, both as a family man and as a proud local campaigner for the village he called home. 'We owe it to his memory to see action taken, and people in Riccall can be certain of my full and unwavering support. 'Rest in peace John.' North Yorkshire Council leader Carl Les, said: 'John was a hard-working and well-respected councillor and this is incredibly sad news. 'He proved himself to be a dedicated public servant during his time with the former North Yorkshire County Council and Selby District Council, giving up his time to try to improve his local community. 'On behalf of everyone at North Yorkshire Council, I would like to express my deepest sympathy and condolences to his family, friends, former colleagues and all those affected by his death.' North Yorkshire Council's executive member for highways and transportation, Councillor Malcolm Taylor, said: 'While it would be inappropriate to speculate about the exact circumstances surrounding this particular collision with a formal investigation to take place, we are committed to ensuring our roads are as safe as possible for all users. 'We will continue to work closely with all our road safety partners to reduce the number of serious and fatal road collisions across North Yorkshire.'

Costa Blanca gang war fears as crime boss shot dead in tourist hotspot in broad daylight
Gangster Caner Kocer is said to have made threats online before he was shot by two gunmen in the popular Spanish resort of Torrevieja in front of a terrified mum with her baby British tourists are on alert after a Turkish crime boss was murdered in a popular Spanish resort amid fears the shooting could spark a gang war. The victim, named as Caner Kocer, 30, was gunned down on Sunday evening in the centre of Torrevieja, south of Alicante on the Costa Blanca. Two hitmen fired six shots from close range before fleeing in a getaway car waiting nearby which was driven by a third suspect. Witnesses to the 7pm attack, in the old town area near the seafront which is popular with tourists, included a mother with a baby in a pushchair. Turkish media reported Kocer is one of the leaders of an organised crime gang known as the "Daltons" who have been in dispute with rivals the Caspers group. It comes after a man brutally killed a woman on a first date and left her body parts around town. Three Turkish men have reportedly been arrested. The Daltons gang are said to be part of a new generation of Turkish criminal who target young people through social media platforms like TikTok, ensnaring them into carrying out extortion and robbery. Turkish media has reported that Kocer's gang are now preparing to retaliate raising fears of further bloodshed in Spain. A member of the Daltons gang was extradited from Georgia to Turkey last month suspected of a string of shootings in Istanbul. And the gang are also suspected of carrying out a string of shootings in Greece in recent years including in May when gunmen opened fire at undercover police officers. Bullets were fired at the cops as they followed Daltons members who were suspected of being in the process of planning another hit. Kocer had been making threats on social media before his killing and was pictured pointing a gun at the camera alongside words in Turkish which translate as: "Spain's greatest duck hunter cannot miss the target. He knows the ducks very well. You will swear allegiance." He was shot as he walked by a town centre restaurant. Pictures from the scene showed police and paramedics treating him as lay by the restaurant terrace. Nearby streets were cordoned off until late Sunday as forensic officers carried out a finger-tip search of the scene. Six bullet casings from an automatic firearm are said to have been removed. Three suspects are understood to have been held around 40 minutes after the murder. Turkish media reports said the Daltons Gang are a violent criminal organisation which started out in Istanbul and have been in the news in recent years for assassinations abroad. The Costa Blanca has seen a number of violent incidents involving British and Irish nationals in recent months. The body of Belfast man John George was found hidden in an orchard in Rojales near Torrevieja on January 7. He had been shot. Alleged killer Jonny Smyth, also from Northern Ireland, was extradited to Spain in April after being arrested in Braga in northern Portugal on March 25 and remains on remand in prison. On May 13 an Irishman was left critically injured after being shot in the head near a shopping centre in Orihuela Costa just north of Torrevieja. Belfast man Dan McMeekin was stabbed nearby in June. He was knifed in the neck and rushed to Torrevieja Hospital for a life-saving emergency operation.
