Metro rail alignment at Koyambedu gets straightened now

Time of India01-07-2025
Chennai: CMRL's revised alignment near Koyambedu, finalised a year ago, is now taking shape on the ground. Originally, Corridor 5 (Madhavaram–Sholinganallur) of CMRL's Phase II curved after VR Mall to connect
Kendriya Vidyalaya
, cross the DMDK party office, and then proceed to Koyambedu.
However, with long-distance bus services shifting from Chennai Moffusil Bus Terminus (CMBT) to Kilambakkam, ridership projections for this section dropped. As a result, CMRL opted for a more direct alignment between Kendriya Vidyalaya and Koyambedu, eliminating the curve and dropping the proposed Kaliamman Koil Street station from the plan.
To streamline operations and reduce land acquisition, the alignment now bypasses 100 Feet Road, and the new station has been shifted to a location directly above the existing Koyambedu station, consolidating both corridors under a single hub.
This realignment brings the new viaduct closer to Corridor 2, prompting substation modifications. The double-decker viaduct design for the Koyambedu segment remains intact, with completion aimed for June 2026.

Residents in the area have largely welcomed the change. "This stretch is already congested, and adding another station between Kendriya Vidyalaya and Koyambedu would have worsened traffic and pedestrian movement," said R Kumaran, a resident of Natesan Nagar.

"A straighter route makes better sense."
The change has also paved the way for the state highways department to fast-track construction of a long-pending 18 crore pedestrian skywalk. Planned at the intersection of Jawaharlal Nehru Road and Poonamallee High Road, the skywalk will connect the DMDK office area — where the dropped station was planned — with MTC bus stop across the road. Further north, progress on the same corridor is affected by delays in the underground stretch between Nadamuni and Madhavaram, which crosses under the Coovum River.
This was among six cancelled JICA-funded tenders. Although fresh bids were awarded last year, permission for riverbed works was granted only last month by the Water Resources Department.
Meanwhile, at Thirumangalam, the metro station originally planned over a bridge has been shifted to the side, requiring the acquisition of four residential apartments. Trains will now pass directly through these buildings.

Jalgaon ZP to monitor midday meals in schools using geo-based photo verification

Nashik: Meenal Karanwal, Jalgaon zilla parishad's chief executive officer, has planned a direct monitoring system for the midday meals provided to students. Karanwal has decided to experiment by requesting school headmasters to submit photographs of the meals, along with geo-tagging used by authorities for other purposes. "To ensure the students get good food on time and also see what is being served to them through the midday meals, we have decided to form groups on social media on which only geo-tagged photographs of the food served to the children will be shared," said CEO Meenal Karanwal. A senior officer of the zilla parishad said the objective is to monitor the food provided to students on specific dates and verify compliance with state govt menu for midday meals. The scheme offers free lunches to students enrolled in govt or govt-aided schools across the state, aiming to increase school attendance and ensure a nutritious diet is consumed to prevent malnutrition. The officer said there have been complaints about missing food components or the provision of stale food, among other issues. With over 1,800 schools, they have been organised into clusters and further grouped into talukas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "The headmasters will provide the photograph with a caption of the ingredients in meals and the number of students served the food, which will be considered on record, and surprise visits will also be conducted to ensure the photographs tally with the ground reality," the officer added. Veterans, war widows seek legal help amid property disputes and pension delays

Hyderabad: They once stood tall on the front lines but today, in their twilight years, many of India's war heroes and their families find themselves abandoned, within the walls of their own homes. In a heart-wrenching case, a 76-year-old widow of a Veer Chakra awardee—once the proud wife of a 1971 war hero—is today pleading for a right that should never have been taken from her: The right to live peacefully in her own home. The tenant of a flat she inherited from her parents refuses to vacate, despite the lease expiring in Nov 2024. Her repeated requests have been ignored. Once celebrated for her husband's sacrifice, she now waits in silence. Not far away, an 81-year-old retired lieutenant colonel—decorated for his valour in the 1965 and 1971 wars—faces indignity of another kind. In a cruel twist, the resident welfare association of his neighbourhood, comprised of fellow veterans, allegedly cut off his water connection. For two decades now, this soldier who once faced enemy fire survives on borewell and packaged water. Among them was a 65-year-old woman from Alwal, second wife of a late lance naik. For 14 years she has been denied her widow's pension, even though the soldier's first wife had remarried and started another family. 'She got the pension until her death. I got nothing,' she said. A retired havildar from Vikarabad fights land grabbers who forged documents to seize his land, despite his lawful ownership and support from government schemes. In Tellapur, on Hyderabad's outskirts, two Navy veterans watch helplessly as a real estate company repeatedly demolishes boundary walls around their plots. 'We can't even access our land anymore,' one of them said. Regional sainik welfare officer N Sreenesh Kumar, panel advocate K Murali Mohan, and placement officer Captain R Srinivasulu attended to the grievances, offering legal guidance and hope. 'They were informed of their rights and the steps needed for swift redressal,' said Mohan. To ensure veterans and their families need not travel long distances for justice, officials announced plans to set up similar legal aid desks at all district-level sainik welfare offices across the state.
