Meet Khandwa girl who shot gold at KVS Nat'l Sports Meet

Indore: Ashwini Chauhan, a 13-year-old student from Barkhedi village in Khandwa, brought laurels to Madhya Pradesh by clinching gold medal in 10-metre peep sight rifle shooting (under-14 category) at the 54th KVS National Sports Meet 2025. The event was organised by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan in Phagwara of Punjab from July 15 to 19 Currently studying in Class 8 at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Khandwa, Ashwini trains at Victory Shooting Club in the town and has also qualified for pre-nationals of the NRAI national championship scheduled for Dec. Despite her initial success, Ashwini's journey was not without challenges. She currently practises with a club-owned rifle, as purchasing a personal professional kit — costing Rs 2-3 lakh — remains out of reach for her family. Yet, this limitation was never a deterrent. She continues to sharpen her skills, making the most of the limited equipment available to her. "The club rifle is shared among several shooters and is frequently adjusted to suit each one, which makes it even more challenging for Ashwini to train consistently. Being a middle-class family with three children, it's difficult for us to afford a professional shooting kit for her at the moment," Ashwini's mother Ranu Chauhan told TOI. Despite the financial hurdles, Ashwini's determination never wavered. Her father, a govt clerk posted in Bhikangaon, lives away from home. Her mother, Ranu, a homemaker and a former state-level shot put player whose own sports dreams were left unfulfilled due to early marriage, takes on the responsibility of nurturing Ashwini's dreams. Every day, she travels 8 km on a scooter, carrying Ashwini and her younger sister Anshika, who is also training in shooting, to the academy. "We may not have a lot of resources, but I didn't want my daughters to give up on sports the way I had to. They are living the dream I once saw for myself," added Ranu. Back home, Ashwini was welcomed like a hero after her return from Punjab. Locals gathered with garlands, sweets, and drums, and she was taken on a celebratory rally in an open jeep — marking her moment of pride for the entire district. Ashwini's sporting journey began at the age of nine with karate in 2020, in which she even won a silver medal at an international tournament in Kathmandu. But, her mother explored the future prospects of karate for Ashwini, and realised that it might not offer sustainable opportunities in the long run. Some well-wishers at the ground where Ashwini went for her morning fitness routine suggested to her mother that she should consider enrolling Ashwini in shooting. Since then, she has been under the mentorship of coach Kashif Khan at the shooting club. "Ashwini has the focus, balance, and patience of a natural shooter. She never misses a session and puts in the hard work day after day," said coach Kashif. With a rigorous routine that begins at 5am, Ashwini divides her time between physical training and shooting practice. Ashwini now has her sights set on national and international competitions, with her ultimate dream of winning Olympic gold for India firmly in view.

MLA Powar threatens hunger strike

Nirmal: Mudhole MLA war Ramarao Patel criticised both the previous and current governments for neglecting the development of Basara temple. He demanded the immediate release of Rs 42 crore in funds and declared that there would be no rest until the temple reconstruction begins. Speaking at the Tahsildar's office on Saturday during the distribution of Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak cheques to 36 beneficiaries, he warned that if reconstruction doesn't begin, he would go on a hunger strike during the upcoming Dussehra and Diwali festivals. He reminded that the Godavari Pushkaralu will be held in June 2027, drawing millions of devotees, and urged the government to take proactive steps. He emphasized that the Rs 42 crore previously allocated must be re-sanctioned immediately. He blamed past rulers for Basara's underdevelopment, contrasting it with the 50 crore temple construction completed in Adelli. On the agriculture front, he highlighted that repairs to motors and canals under the Basara Lift Irrigation scheme have enabled irrigation for 1,600 acres. He announced that Rs 1.12 crore would soon be sanctioned for further irrigation works, with tenders to be floated shortly. He also mentioned multiple meetings with Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar on this matter. Regarding healthcare, he disclosed plans to construct a 30-bed hospital at the temple site with Rs 4 crore. He also noted that the Basara Railway Station has been modernised with Central government funds and that the double railway line will be completed by next year. A proposal has been submitted to the central government to extend the Vande Mataram Express to Basara. He assured that a Kendriya Vidyalaya (Central School) will be launched next year. With the upcoming completion of a 100-room guesthouse in Basara, Ministers Konda Surekha and Jupalli Krishna Rao will be invited to discuss various temple related issues.

Metro rail alignment at Koyambedu gets straightened now

Chennai: CMRL's revised alignment near Koyambedu, finalised a year ago, is now taking shape on the ground. Originally, Corridor 5 (Madhavaram–Sholinganallur) of CMRL's Phase II curved after VR Mall to connect Kendriya Vidyalaya , cross the DMDK party office, and then proceed to Koyambedu. However, with long-distance bus services shifting from Chennai Moffusil Bus Terminus (CMBT) to Kilambakkam, ridership projections for this section dropped. As a result, CMRL opted for a more direct alignment between Kendriya Vidyalaya and Koyambedu, eliminating the curve and dropping the proposed Kaliamman Koil Street station from the plan. To streamline operations and reduce land acquisition, the alignment now bypasses 100 Feet Road, and the new station has been shifted to a location directly above the existing Koyambedu station, consolidating both corridors under a single hub. This realignment brings the new viaduct closer to Corridor 2, prompting substation modifications. The double-decker viaduct design for the Koyambedu segment remains intact, with completion aimed for June 2026. "This stretch is already congested, and adding another station between Kendriya Vidyalaya and Koyambedu would have worsened traffic and pedestrian movement," said R Kumaran, a resident of Natesan Nagar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "A straighter route makes better sense." The change has also paved the way for the state highways department to fast-track construction of a long-pending 18 crore pedestrian skywalk. Planned at the intersection of Jawaharlal Nehru Road and Poonamallee High Road, the skywalk will connect the DMDK office area — where the dropped station was planned — with MTC bus stop across the road. Further north, progress on the same corridor is affected by delays in the underground stretch between Nadamuni and Madhavaram, which crosses under the Coovum River. This was among six cancelled JICA-funded tenders. Although fresh bids were awarded last year, permission for riverbed works was granted only last month by the Water Resources Department. Meanwhile, at Thirumangalam, the metro station originally planned over a bridge has been shifted to the side, requiring the acquisition of four residential apartments. Trains will now pass directly through these buildings. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Doctor's Day 2025 , messages and quotes!
