Art of deal: Trump cites conflicts round the globe to back Netanyahu's Nobel push; 'Stopped a lot of fights'
NEW DELHI: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday reiterated that he played a key role in brokering a peace deal between several countries, including India and Pakistan, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump claimed that his administration stopped "a lot of fights," including India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo, and Rwanda and Congo. "We did a job with India and Pakistan and Serbia, Kosovo, Rwanda and the Congo. And this was all over the last three weeks or so. And we stopped a lot of fights," Trump said. "I think a very big one, frankly, a very, very big one was India and Pakistan, and we stopped that over trade. We're dealing with India, we're dealing with Pakistan, and we said we're not going to be dealing with you at all if you are going to fight. And they were maybe at a nuclear stage. They're both nuclear powers. And I think stopping that was very important," he added. Trump also blamed his predecessor Joe Biden for the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and claimed that he would never have let the war start if he were the president. "We're trying to help out with a Biden-created monster. This whole thing that's happening with Russia and Ukraine, it's horrible, it's a horrible thing. This is a war that was never going to happen." This comes as Netanyahu presented Trump a letter he sent to the Prize Committee, nominating the US President for the Peace Prize. Netanyahu claimed that Trump played an important role in "forging peace in one after another." "I want to present to you, Mr. President, the letter I sent to the Nobel Prize Committee. It's nominating you for the Peace Prize, which is well deserved, and you should get it," Netanyahu said as Trump hosted him for talks at the White House. Trump has received multiple Nobel Peace Prize nominations from supporters and lawmakers over the years. He has openly expressed frustration about not receiving the prestigious award. He has also sought credit for helping maintain peace between Egypt and Ethiopia, and for brokering the Abraham Accords agreements aimed at normalizing relations between Israel and several Arab nations. Trump campaigned as a "peacemaker," promising to use his negotiating skills to quickly end wars in Ukraine and Gaza. However, both conflicts continue to rage even after five months of his presidency.

'Elon Musk should stay out of politics...': US Treasury chief warns after 'America Party' announcement
'Elon Musk should stay out of politics...': US Treasury chief warns after 'America Party' announcement In a dramatic escalation of tensions between two of the most prominent figures in American business and politics, Elon Musk has officially announced the formation of a new political organisation called the 'America Party.' The announcement came on Saturday, July 5, 2025, following weeks of growing disagreement between President Donald Trump and the administration over the recently passed tax-and-spending bill. The new legislation, which includes sweeping tax cuts and expanded defence spending, has drawn criticism from Musk and others who warn that it could significantly inflate the US budget deficit. Musk, once a vocal supporter of Trump and a key player in federal advisory roles, now appears poised to take on members of the Republican establishment during the upcoming midterm elections. According to a report by Reuters, Musk shared the news of the party's formation through his social media platform X, citing the results of a public poll showing strong support for an alternative to the traditional two-party system. The implications of Musk's political move are already reverberating across Wall Street, Washington, and Silicon Valley. Elon Musk rejects Donald Trump's tax bill, launches 'America Party' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Elon Musk's political shift marks a stark change from his earlier alignment with President Trump. During Trump's previous term, Musk served in a high-profile advisory position as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). He also provided financial support to Trump's 2024 re-election campaign. However, their relationship began to unravel over the content of Trump's latest tax bill. According to The Daily Beast, Musk strongly opposed the bill's elimination of green energy credits that had benefited Tesla's electric vehicle business. Trump, in turn, has accused Musk of acting out of self-interest and has threatened to revoke billions in federal contracts from both Tesla and SpaceX. Trump's reaction and the White House response President Trump responded publicly to Musk's announcement during a press interaction on July 6. Calling the move 'ridiculous,' Trump dismissed the formation of a third party as a distraction and warned that it could disrupt the nation's political balance. The White House has not issued an official statement, but Trump's Council of Economic Advisers Chair Stephen Miran defended the administration's policy on ABC's 'This Week,' claiming that the tax bill would 'turbocharge' economic growth. Miran also downplayed Musk's political influence, saying, 'The principles of DOGE were very popular, but if you looked at the polling, Elon was not.' Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent publicly urged Musk to prioritise his responsibilities as CEO of Tesla and SpaceX. In a CNN interview, Bessent remarked, 'I imagine that those boards of directors did not like this announcement yesterday and will be encouraging him to focus on his business activities, not his political activities.' Impact on business and financial markets The fallout from Musk's announcement was immediate. According to a Reuters report published on July 6, investment firm Azoria Partners delayed the launch of its Tesla-linked Convexity ETF due to uncertainties over Musk's political ambitions. Azoria CEO James Fishback publicly urged Tesla's board to review whether Musk's political commitments were compatible with his corporate duties. Tesla's stock price dropped nearly 7% following the news, extending a broader decline of about 35% since late 2024. Analysts cited rising political risk and leadership distraction as key concerns for investors. Fishback, writing on X, stated: 'I encourage the Board to meet immediately and ask Elon to clarify his political ambitions and evaluate whether they are compatible with his full-time obligations to Tesla as CEO.' He later added, 'Elon left us with no other choice.' Structure and goals of Elon Musk's 'America Party' Musk's newly formed America Party is designed to operate outside of traditional Republican and Democratic platforms. According to an overview shared on Musk's X profile and summarized in The New York Post, the party will focus on several core issues: Reducing the federal deficit Expanding AI-enabled national defence systems Promoting deregulation in the science and technology sectors Offering tax incentives for families and manufacturing Funding primary challengers to Republican incumbents who voted for the tax bill Rather than fielding a presidential candidate, Musk stated that the party's immediate focus is to win 'a couple of key congressional seats' in the 2026 midterms and reshape the legislative priorities of the Republican majority. Elon Musk's justification for the break Musk has framed his departure from the GOP as a necessary response to what he views as irresponsible fiscal policy. In a series of posts on X, he described Trump's bill as 'insanely expensive' and claimed that it would 'destroy the American balance sheet.' He emphasised that the America Party is intended to restore what he calls 'pragmatic conservatism,' centred on technological advancement and fiscal restraint. According to Reuters, Musk is also considering launching PACs to support like-minded candidates, although no official filings have been made yet with the Federal Election Commission. Punjab govt appoints Sanjeev Arora as new NRI minister, diaspora extends support for overseas outreach; but demands real action this time
AMRITSAR : With the recent replacement of Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal as Punjab's NRI minister by Sanjeev Arora, a wave of cautious optimism is sweeping through the diaspora. Past frustrations are giving way to hope, and some NRIs are even stepping forward with bold offers to fund overseas govt outreach offices, provided their voices are genuinely heard. 'Despite heartfelt appeals by NRIs and bold promises made by the Punjab govt, NRIs continue to face numerous unresolved issues, including property disputes such as fraudulent property transfers , illegal occupations of their properties, matrimonial conflicts, etc.," said Rajwant Singh from Switzerland following a Zoom meeting with members of the NRI community. He said there is no doubt that the Punjab govt has set up dedicated bodies — including the NRI department and NRI police stations — but they have largely failed to deliver real results. He added that poor leadership, lack of funds, too much paperwork, and political interference have left the majority of NRIs disappointed. 'Even when we file complaints with the NRI police, the cases get buried under influence and delay,' alleged Rajwinder. Shubhlatha Vishat from Germany said that when Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal — himself once an NRI — was appointed to the role of NRI minister in 2022, expectations were sky-high. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo His decision to give up American citizenship was seen as a gesture of deep commitment. Yet, as time went on, NRIs began to feel that his tenure did not live up to its promise. 'He had the right story, but no strategy. We didn't see any serious outreach. It felt like NRI issues were simply a portfolio, not a priority,' she said. Many NRIs still remember how their coordinated support helped sweep AAP to power in 2022. They say they are willing to do it again, but this time, only if their issues are addressed with sincerity and speed. Sonia Kumari from Finland said that most of the overseas Punjabis enthusiastically supported the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the 2022 elections by mobilising fundraising campaigns and social media drives in its favour. 'We expected that a people-first party would prioritise their voices. When this didn't happen, the sense of betrayal was palpable,' she said. Avtar Singh from Belgium said that with the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections on the horizon, the AAP has a golden opportunity . 'If the new NRI minister Sanjeev Arora shows genuine engagement and results within the next year, he will unlock a force of global goodwill,' he said, but cautioned that if the new NRI minister repeats the mistakes of the past, it will lose a generation of trust. With Sanjeev Arora, recently elected MLA from Ludhiana West, now at the helm of NRI affairs , the NRI community is extending a powerful offer. Rajwinder said the NRIs, during the Zoom meeting, have decided to extend a rare and unprecedented offer to fully bear the costs of establishing NRI-specific offices abroad — including rent, salaries, and daily operations — if the Punjab govt commits to genuinely resolving their concerns. 'These offices must not be ceremonial, but they should be staffed by trained legal, administrative, and consular experts — not political appointees — and must function as direct bridges between overseas Punjabis and the Punjab government ,' said Rajwinder. Echoing Rajwinder, an NRI from Norway, Jagtar Singh, said, 'If the govt is serious, we are ready to support not just financially, but strategically. We can help draft policy, identify priority cases, and ensure rapid coordination. But we need genuine political will.'
