MQM-P slams 16 years of PPP rule in Sindh, pledges to issue white paper
Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) Pakistan has pledged to release a white paper against the Sindh government, while calling the 16-year-long rule of the Pakistan People's Party in the province the worst and most corrupt.
In a press conference, senior MQM-P leaders including Farooq Sattar and Nasreen Jalil accused the provincial government of gross mismanagement and corruption, claiming that they had brought yet another lament for Karachi.
The white paper will include details the state of governance under the PPP, pointing out that 25 billion rupees in dues remain unpaid to government employees residing in Karachi and working in local government bodies.
Farooq Sattar remarked that these employees had their monthly gratuity contributions deducted over 30 to 40 years of service, but those dues have not been paid to retirees since 2017. He questioned, "What could be a bigger economic crime than this?"
He further explained that all these Karachi-based institutions, led by the Mayor of Karachi or the Provincial Minister for Local Government, have been under the control of Sindh's feudal lords since 2017, when MQM-P was removed from overseeing them.
Farooq Sattar stated that Rs 25 billion of dues for Karachi's retired employees remain unpaid since 2017, with similar issues affecting Hyderabad. He emphasized that after the 18th amendment, the Sindh government is responsible for paying these dues.
The MQM leaders revealed that Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) owes Rs 15 billion to 10,000 employees, while Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) owes Rs 6 billion to 5,000 employees. Similarly, the Karachi Development Authority (KDA) owes Rs 5 billion to over 1,000 retired employees. Other bodies, such as WASA, HMC, and HDA in Hyderabad, owe another Rs 4-5 billion.
A further part of the white paper on Sindh government's mismanagement will be released after Ramzan. Farooq Sattar accused the Sindh government of depriving Karachi's 25 towns of their rights, with retired employees being treated unfairly.
He also accused the provincial government of hiring individuals with fake domicile certificates for new recruitments, especially in Karachi and Hyderabad, and in medical colleges. The MQM leaders stated that the Sindh government is perpetrating both an economic and educational massacre against the people of Karachi.
Farooq Sattar raised questions about where the Rs 25 billion had gone, stressing that these funds were Karachi's taxpayers' money, not anyone's personal wealth. He demanded an inquiry into the missing funds.
He also pointed out that the salaries and benefits of provincial ministers, including the Chief Minister, are paid from Karachi's taxes. Farooq Sattar demanded that the government investigate where the tax money is being allocated.
In his press conference, Farooq Sattar urged the political figures in Islamabad and Rawalpindi to pay attention to Karachi's plight, stressing that this situation was harmful to Pakistan's stability and strength.
He reassured the retired employees that they were not alone, adding that MQM Pakistan had returned with renewed strength and unity. He warned that post-Ramzan, the rising costs of essential goods would be highlighted. "This is a warning to those who underestimated our strength during our organizational restructuring," he said.
On the question of collaboration with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi (MQM-H) leader, Afaq Ahmed, Farooq Sattar expressed hope that old agreements would be revived, though he acknowledged that Afaq Ahmed had rejected his appeal for unity in the past.
Earlier, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced plans to release a white paper evaluating the performance of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government in Punjab during its first year in office.
Addressing a press conference at the Lahore Press Club on Wednesday, Leader of the Opposition in Punjab, Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar, sharply criticised the provincial government, alleging that public funds were being misused for self-promotion.
Without directly naming Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, he accused the administration of diverting state resources toward promoting her and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

This marked the first formal meeting at the foreign minister level between Pakistan and the United States in several years, as the previous administration under president Joe Biden had largely ignored Islamabad. The meeting between Dar and Rubio came against the backdrop of a renewed push by both sides to reset their ties, which have often been marred by mistrust. Contrary to expectations, under President Trump's second term, relations between the two countries took a positive turn. It was Pakistan's assistance in arresting and extraditing one of the masterminds of the Kabul Airport attack in August 2021 that led to the reset in ties with the US. President Trump publicly praised Pakistan's efforts in his first address to the US Congress. Then, amid the Iran-Israel war, President Trump hosted Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at the White House in an unprecedented move that raised eyebrows in New Delhi. Following the army chief's meeting at the White House, there have been increased contacts between the two countries. The meeting in Washington on Friday was seen as Pakistan's push to revive the structured mechanism between the two countries.

Heated debate on Ajrak number plates in Sindh Assembly
Listen to article The opposition and treasury benches, during the Sindh Assembly session on Friday, traded verbal barbs over the issue of Ajrak-themed number plates for vehicles. The opposition asserted they were not against the cultural and heritage status of Ajrak, but forcing people to pay exorbitant penalties for not installing the said number plates was unjustified. Moreover, the drive to implement the Ajrak number plates was limited to Karachi only, while in the rest of the province. Several MPAs expressed serious concerns over public issues and criticised harassing citizens over new number plates. They also expressed strong reactions over the notices issued to residents of derelict buildings in Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Hyderabad. MQM member Shabbir Qureshi raised objections to traffic police unjustly issuing fines and harassing citizens over Ajrak number plates. Also Read: Parking fee abolished across Karachi In response, Provincial Minister Saeed Ghani clarified that Ajrak number plates have been in vogue for the last two to three years and include security features. He stated that motorcycles are often used in thefts and crimes, hence having registered and identifiable number plates is essential. These number plates are readable by the Safe City Cameras and have helped in apprehending persons illegally using official vehicles and government number plates. Excise Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla said that since 2022, new number plates have been installed on one million motorcycles, and it is a reflection of the culture of Sindh. He added that the Punjab government adopted the Ajrak design on its flyovers, but it has been made controversial in Sindh, which is unfortunate. MQM member Najm Mirza said that Ajrak is not the issue, but people are being troubled under its guise, with traffic police issuing fines amounting to thousands of rupees. He recommended forming of a special parliamentary committee on this issue, which should also include the opposition. He further said that he accepts full responsibility for the recent building accident in Lyari in which 27 people lost their lives. He said that the affected building was constructed illegally in 1980s. Following the accident, the DG of the Sindh Building Control Authority was removed and cases were registered against 11 officers, many of whom have been arrested. He said that assistance was delayed due to the victims not having identity cards, but now Rs90,000 per family is being given as three-month rent. A total of 45 families were living in the affected building in Lyari, most of whom were tenants. He added that 66 dangerous buildings in Karachi and 87 across Sindh have been vacated, and further action is being taken under the new committee. Meanwhile, Home Minister Sindh Ziaul Hassan Lanjar said regarding police recruitment that 50,000 youth passed the written examination under the advertisement given during the caretaker government, out of which 11,000 were recruited on merit and all the details are available on the website. The Sindh Assembly also unanimously passed a resolution condemning the double murder incident in Balochistan, demanding the strictest punishment for the accused involved in the murder. Clock ticking on TikTok with US shutdown looming over sale deal
TikTok could be forced to cease operations in the United States if China does not approve a proposed sale of the platform, according to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Speaking on CNBC, Lutnick emphasized the urgency of reaching a deal and asserted that control of TikTok's algorithm and technology must rest with Americans. 'China can have a little piece or ByteDance, the current owner, can keep a little piece. But basically, Americans will have control,' Lutnick said. 'If [China doesn't] approve it, then TikTok is going to go dark, and those decisions are coming very soon.' The short-form video app, owned by Beijing-based ByteDance, is used by approximately 170 million Americans. A law passed in 2024 required ByteDance to either divest TikTok's U.S. assets or face a shutdown by January 19, unless substantial progress was made. Although President Donald Trump extended the deadline by 90 days to September 17, legal and political challenges have stalled negotiations. A plan had been in development earlier this year to spin off TikTok's U.S. business into a separate, American-owned company. However, progress halted after China signaled it would not approve the sale, especially following Trump's announcement of new tariffs on Chinese imports. Attorney General Pam Bondi recently sent letters to tech companies like Apple and Google, indicating that the Justice Department would not pursue enforcement actions against them for continuing to host TikTok. The letters cite Trump's conclusion that an immediate shutdown could hinder his ability to manage national security and foreign affairs. Some Democratic lawmakers have questioned Trump's authority to extend the deadline and argue that any deal reached must fully comply with U.S. law. TikTok has not issued a public comment on the situation as of yet.
